Leslie's version is so vulnerable , I'm not quite sure why so many people don't like it. She sounds unsure and young like someone who is disappointed with herself for letting down her community. Personally loved her version. Na Ha-na version was absolute beautiful as well.
I watched the movie first before getting into the stage musical, let me tell you that i vastly prefer leslie's version. Mandy is super talented no denying that, but i feel like leslie's voice better captured the essence of a college student.
I prefer Leslie’s version. Mandy just seems too old for the role too. Leslie looks and sounds more like a fresh college student having a difficult time.
I agree but i think there’s a huge difference between performing for a concert and for a broadway show. At a concert you can focus solely on singing whereas in a show you have to focus on character and acting too
Agree and disagree. I think that Leslie was good for the movie overall. But I think that the style of music requires a more open throated voice. She’s very pop. But still. A good singer!
Leslie was cute and all but I felt like there was something deeper missing. Idk maybe it was the changed up script (where tf was everything I know!!!) or how things don’t always translate well from stage to film, but… i just felt like Ninas character was more of a secondary character if that makes sense ?? LOL idk I’m rambling now lol
People have different opinions on this but I thought leslie’s version made sense. It’s depressing and melancholic and lost and sad and angry but mostly fear. This is an 18/19 year old girl seeing the world for the first time from her community. She’s disappointed by what she finds and rejects it to come back home but home had so much pressure on her that she’s now just scared of disappointing everyone especially her father. It’s a good belting song on broadway but in the movie, I felt like someone understood what dropping out of college felt like. It’s a terrifying decision and coming home to explain that. I’d be depressed, lost and scared too.
Exactly. She emoted so we'll for a movie setting. I could feel how disappointed she was and how sad she was that she was possibly disappointing her community.
I get what you mean but I honestly didn't feel anything from Leslies version, in Mandys her stronger voice has a lot of pent up emotion that you'd expect from someone who has to come to face with her reality
@@kika-pon6128 true, everybody has their own interpretation. For me, As a Broadway song, Mandy’s voice is better. As a movie where you are trying to put yourself in such a vulnerable position, I preferred Leslie. I had anxiety watching her scene because I’ve been there as well. It’s not really about pent up emotions, it’s more like everything else is overwhelming and you don’t know how to deal with it cause you don’t even know how it happened in the first place. How did you end up dropping out of a college you got a scholarship for? You don’t feel brave, you feel judged cause so many would kill to be you. What do you say in your defence? Anyway my point it that mandy’s voice made me cry and Leslie’s version made me understand... it isn’t really passionate, it’s defeat.
The movie version is different. They focused on a more tender approach, which is fine, sentimental, etc. I however prefer Mandy version a lot, in comparison I did find the movie version somewhat weak, but in the movie concept it definitely works.
The movie soundtrack seemed to be geared a lot more toward radio where you dont get a lot of full voices, even if they do have range like Ariana Grande
Damn, I love the self-anger in Eva's performance. She performs with the same vocal power as Mandy Gonzalez but with her own different interpretation and I love it. When covid subsides completely in the future, I would love to see her as Nina in a revival for the musical.
In my opinion I think Leslie gives us that sweet freshman collage student vibe. As much as I love all the other talented woman , I think Leslie gives off that young girl. Witch I really liked 🤩( they all were amazing tho)
honestly all these women have something that makes their version special and it's great. I absolutely agree Leslie was great for the movie, it made me almost cry when i saw it for the first time it was so vulnerable this poor girl just wanted to make everyone proud
The issue I have with Leslie's voice is it sounds too soft and pop. There is no contrast between Nina's and Vanessa's voice. Their voices are too simular. The same color. The contrast of Nina's belting and power vs Vanessa's softness. It works to distinguish their two colors and to separate their characters. They sounded too similar in the movie.
I actually had the opposite thought! I've never seen the show, only listened to the original cast soundtrack, and I found it pretty hard to know what was going on because I couldn't clearly hear the difference between Vanessa and Nina on the first few listens. To me, Nina in the movie has so much emotion and you can hear it coming through in Leslie's performance (it made me cry in the cinema!), whereas Vanessa's songs were more active/determined, so I could instantly tell the difference between these two characters and what they were like.
I personally didn’t like the movie version of Nina and Vanessa. Their voices were too babyish and pop like. I also felt like Vanessa’s character in the movie was bland and she didn’t carry that confidence that the Vanessa in the play did. Maybe I’m being too critical but I really tried to like the movie but I felt some roles were miscast.

Because it wasn't. She sounded like she was rushing too much. The song is literally about someone trying to calm themselves and find the strength to face those that she feels she haset down. Eva's version didn't give me any of that. Mandy is the gold standard. Voice and acting together.

Y’all the determination in Mandy’s voice tho chills. And the Highschool ones like damm the talent in this video the fact they can sing such a difficult song in Highschool.
Honestly I was very disappointed by the movie version, not just Nina but in general. She felt sidelined as a character, and as a singer I felt she didn't have the weight in her voice to give this song have the impact it deserves. I feel like in the original, the leads were usnavi and Nina, and each had a love interest, whereas in the movie, it felt like usnavi was the lead, Vanessa was the love interest, and Nina and benny were supporting characters.
Same, Usnavi was more a narrator, kind of like a ringmaster for the whole story, a connecting thread, but Nina I always felt was the MC, and in the movie, not so much. She was barely a secondary character. I thought she was definitely ingénue(d) in the movie, a fluffy character. Instead of being a warrior like she was in the musical.
As someone who’s only seen the movie I agree about Nina and Benny portrayed as supporting characters. Based on the description before watching the movie I also thought she would be more main
sameeee, i felt like in the movie benny and nina's love development, also nina and her dad's story felt more like just a filler and i was sooo disappointed, but nonetheless i still enjoyed the movie
I preferred Leslie's acting but Mandy's singing (but then again Mandy kind of is too dramatic? I feel? If that makes sense?) So basically all hail Eva Noblezada
My favorite would have to be leslie, she seems the right age and brings a lot of emotion you can see it in her eyes and facial expressions, It was hard to decide between her and Mandy but after re watching both of them I had to choose Leslie. Not just because of singing but she just seems like Nina to me, and I love the change we’re it isn’t abula who calls her but it’s her dad, because you kinda see how scared she is to tell him.
Mandy and Anna Villafañe are my favorites. There are so many emotions in both of their versions that it feels real. The pressure, anger, awkwardness, and shame of the situation are all shown and it takes me on a trip of her life. The movie version is much more vulnerable but it doesn’t do it for me because it lacks all of the other emotions.
Ok but na ha-na was so good!! I didn't know they had done a korean version. Eva Noblezda is always amazing, but I think she took too many liberties in her version and I found it kinda distracting
Leslie’s is the most heartfelt and relatable.. Mandy’s is just full force throughout, there’s no dynamic.. Definitely works on stage but Leslie’s is more triggering.. Jordin was EFFORTLESS vocally!
This is one of the few times where I like both the original and the movie singers equally 😲 To be fair, I haven't seen In The Heights yet so there's no nostalgia or anything for me. But both deliver a different kind of emotion and performance that I really relate to.
Jordin Sparks,Mandy,Leslie and Eva were absolutely fantastic, but who surprised me the most was Rebecca Curci! Can’t believe she was in high school! I loved her singing voice!
I was fortunate to see Mandy sing this. She's my utter favorite, but these other ladies were fantastic. This song has such personal resonance for me as it echoes my own story.
the microphone/recording didnt do it justice but annas was so good! also so cool hearing the korean version, the singer had a register and tone really close to mandys!
I might be biased considering Leslie's music has been in my childhood haha. But whenever i hear Leslie's voice its hard to separate the cinematography because the people around her following her around and seeing Ninas childhood really made the song all the more impactful.
Myra is such a great singer/actor, seeing her live as Elphaba was incredible, but whoever did the mixing on her video really did her dirty, we can barely hear her. Also, Eva Noblezada was incredible, but I wasn't able to connect with her because the whole time I felt that she was rushing and it was really throwing me off.
Loved Evas interpretation of this! I know some people thinks she sounded like its rushing, but as someone who has been through this kind of situation I think its perfect. You know that feeling when you go home to a town wherein people expected you'd go to higher places only to feel like youve disappointed them, when you go out you feel like everyone's eyes are on you and you keep thinking anx telling yourself "its fine just smile and breathe" but at the same time you're walking fast because you're ashamed of yourself? Thats exactly what I got from her version. Brilliant!
I've never heard any of these before, coming in without knowing the show is fascinating. Giselle stole it for my, by minute 6 she's still the best so far. I get the fanbase for Mandy, as the original, but she's not objectively the best imo. Also, Na Ha-na is incredible, she has a unique vocal quality to the rest - almost more 'disney princess' but she carries it SO well. I know Myra isn't a studio recording by WOW the balance is so bad for this recording. It looks like an official one, too - you can't even hear her for the first few seconds. She's fighting to be heard and gets more 'shrill' to fight with the orchestra, that had to hurt. I started wondering if recording equipment just got *that* much better from 2008 to now, but nope - 2018 in DC, Anna is incredible and that recording is potato quality. Hm. It's actually not fair to the rest about Leslie, because her recording is obviously by far the best, due to the nature of filming. I want to hear them all sing in that quality recording. Eva, Giselle, Na, and Leslie were the best for me, and a few definitely sunk to the bottom but no need for that negativity here, and it could have been recording quality anyway :)
Myra's was from a press event for the show, I believe. So the recording itself was done by some journalist or musical theater website, without access to the soundboard, just a few cameras on the audience
i was very disappointed and confused why they didn’t cast someone with the range to sing for nina in the movie. dont get me wrong leslie is talented and amazing but i just didn’t think she was right for nina. like breathe in the film just did not do it for me, its a powerful song and Leslie just didn’t deliver it. i felt like the changes they made to the song were so unnecessary. i also think that some of the songs that nina was apart of in the film didn’t hit as strongly as they could’ve because of leslies range. again i don’t think leslies a bad vocalist or actor AT ALL and i did enjoy her in the film, but i do think there was stronger casting options for nina vocal wise that they could’ve went with.
Just a guess, but probably because musical theater translates differently on the screen rather than on stage. Screen acting is more subtle because we can see the scene and the emotions more clearly than on stage. I remember this part of the scene (well, the whole movie) being really visually appealing so they probably let the that do more of the talking. She probably sang with a screen in mind rather than a theater!
Yes I agree - I just don’t think her songs felt right emotionally or vocally - not to say at all that she’s a bad actress or singer but she didn’t feel like Nina to me
@@dumblebee9167 Yeah I didn’t like the approach they took to her character, it didn’t even feel like Nina. Changing her character for the “screen” made no sense to me because she is already so perfect for the screen how she was.
Finally watched ITH and wow. I fell into a rabbit hole of watching every past and present vidoe for it and I love and I mean LOVE the OG but something about Leslie and how soft spoken she sang hit me different. Mandy is a QUEEN tho
ngl the visuals of the movie had me in tears. It is far too relatable to fear disappointing your dad who has dedicated his entire life to sending you to college only fro you to feel like you've disappointed him
Mandy/Eva/Leslie all incredible but holy crap Eva is on a different level 🤯🤯 she has so much power and so much control, her acting is on point, and holy crap wow….just wow 👏👏👏👏
I notice a lot of people complimenting Eva Noblezada and after hearing her, I'm just like "Why are you rushing?" It seemed like she was rushing a lot during her performance, like she couldn't find the beat. No offense to any of her fans. I'm just stating my opinion.
honestly Mandy and Leslie are my favorites, when the movie came out breathe and Black out were the only ones I haven't heard so Leslie's just felt emotional when I watched it but everyone was amazing!
Mandy is the real MVP. Her voice and performance sounds real. Leslie's didn't really cut it for me. Breathe was just bad in the film version except for the visuals that accompanied it.
Some I could not hear well, so I am just going on the best ones I could hear. Mandy Gonzalez. The reunion and the original. She is AMAZING. I also loved Jordan’s interpretation of Nina. It is quite different than Mandy’s, but different doesn’t make it bad :). I also liked Rebecca’s!! They were only in high school at the time of the recording!! They were amazing. Also Eva did a breathtaking job covering the song.

Everything Eva Noblezada does is just absolute absolute gold 🥺💖
Myra Ruiz also played Elphaba and Maureen in the Brazilian versions.
And dubbed Queen Iduna.
Eva is amazing, I remember my brother working with her as tam for miss Saigon, and she’s literally amazing
Pls I just love Jordin too much
Also I'm kinda sad that there is nothing of the West End production
I couldn't find any WE audios! Sorry!
Why is Eva Noblezada just the best at everything?
Jordin Sparks,Mandy,Leslie and Eva were absolutely fantastic, but who surprised me the most was Rebecca Curci! Can’t believe she was in high school! I loved her singing voice!
Actually crying seeing the Leslie scene
I was fortunate to see Mandy sing this. She's my utter favorite, but these other ladies were fantastic. This song has such personal resonance for me as it echoes my own story.
Myra Ruiz our insanely talented Elphaba from Brazilian production🥰🥰
So no one’s gonna talk about the Rebecca curci girl. She did amazing!
She was amazing
Myra Ruiz is so talented, she was also the original Elphaba in Wicked Brazil, I watched it 3 times, she was amazing.
Socorro que eu não conhecia essa versão brasileira!!! Arrasou demais
the microphone/recording didnt do it justice but annas was so good! also so cool hearing the korean version, the singer had a register and tone really close to mandys!
Mandy's vocals are very powerful, but I also like Leslie's gentleness to the song. They're both amazing in their own right
I might be biased considering Leslie's music has been in my childhood haha. But whenever i hear Leslie's voice its hard to separate the cinematography because the people around her following her around and seeing Ninas childhood really made the song all the more impactful.
Why is no one talking about how Rebecca Curci went to Hamilton High School 😂
Just you wait
The amount of chills I got during this video
They are all talented women!!
I actually really like it in korean haha
As a Korean American, same! Korean casts of musicals deserve more recognition!
Same! And the singer was amazing
Yeah they all did a great job and I love Eva’s vocals and acting but it was definitely rushed
@@karene3154 Major Idina Menzel Ocars' performance flashbacks. Hahah.
@@wellysonbrito 😅😅
Loved Evas interpretation of this! I know some people thinks she sounded like its rushing, but as someone who has been through this kind of situation I think its perfect. You know that feeling when you go home to a town wherein people expected you'd go to higher places only to feel like youve disappointed them, when you go out you feel like everyone's eyes are on you and you keep thinking anx telling yourself "its fine just smile and breathe" but at the same time you're walking fast because you're ashamed of yourself? Thats exactly what I got from her version. Brilliant!
I got to see Eva Noblezada at this concert at my university 2019. She was sooooo good
leslie’s voice gives me chills, she’s really something else
I really love Anna’s interpretation of Nina. It’s a bit different but in the best way possible
when i watch this, i cry the whole time. if you have daughters in their 20's you know the feeling
Chris looking so proud at Mandy tho... 😭😭🥰
So the recording itself was done by some journalist or musical theater website, without access to the soundboard, just a few cameras on the audience
you dont know the show? you should really check it out! its a classic
i was very disappointed and confused why they didn’t cast someone with the range to sing for nina in the movie. dont get me wrong leslie is talented and amazing but i just didn’t think she was right for nina. like breathe in the film just did not do it for me, its a powerful song and Leslie just didn’t deliver it. i felt like the changes they made to the song were so unnecessary. i also think that some of the songs that nina was apart of in the film didn’t hit as strongly as they could’ve because of leslies range. again i don’t think leslies a bad vocalist or actor AT ALL and i did enjoy her in the film, but i do think there was stronger casting options for nina vocal wise that they could’ve went with.
I think Leslie's rendition suits the vulnerability and the nervousness/anxiety that Nina feels in this song
@@hannahbanana6149 completly agree. They took a more tender approach in the movie and it suits screen acting perfectly!
I think Jordan Sparks is pretty underrated when it comes to her playing Nina.
Why is no one talking about Anna Villafañe
Sorry, I don't know who Eva Noblezada is, so all I can really say is RIP her pianist trying to keep up.
I’m glad somebody else said it! I’m sitting here like “damn, does she need to be somewhere?”
@@VcShore151 you’re killing me lmao
Is the comparison judging the video quality & camera work? Lol, I kid I kid, this is so phenomenal!! Such a good, underrated song too.
Also, JORDIN SPARKS WAS IN IN THE HEIGHTS SAY WHAT!?? WE LOVE!
Finally watched ITH and wow. I fell into a rabbit hole of watching every past and present vidoe for it and I love and I mean LOVE the OG but something about Leslie and how soft spoken she sang hit me different. Mandy is a QUEEN tho
Mandy is definitely the best but man I love Na Ha-Na! She really did great
ngl the visuals of the movie had me in tears. It is far too relatable to fear disappointing your dad who has dedicated his entire life to sending you to college only fro you to feel like you've disappointed him
ok but na ha-na was angelic i need to hear the full album
There isn't a full album of the Korean production available but here is her in Benny's Dispatch: ua-cam.com/video/LRerQ5PF6c0/v-deo.html

here is the full album!
how beautiful it sounds in Korean ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Mandy/Eva/Leslie all incredible but holy crap Eva is on a different level 🤯🤯 she has so much power and so much control, her acting is on point, and holy crap wow….just wow 👏👏👏👏
I notice a lot of people complimenting Eva Noblezada and after hearing her, I'm just like "Why are you rushing?" It seemed like she was rushing a lot during her performance, like she couldn't find the beat. No offense to any of her fans. I'm just stating my opinion.
I loved all of their voices!!!
Thank you for including Myra ❤️🇧🇷
honestly Mandy and Leslie are my favorites, when the movie came out breathe and Black out were the only ones I haven't heard so Leslie's just felt emotional when I watched it but everyone was amazing!
jordin and leslie are by fAR my favourites for nina, it’s the softer emotional approach that i love
Leslie and Jordan actually made me wanna cry
Me too
Na-Ha-na was amazing I want to see that version live or proshot
oh my goodness Na Ha-na has a GORGEOUS voice - i don't speak her language but WOW she did great
mandy will always be the best but damn did leslie come close
Mandy is the real MVP. Her voice and performance sounds real. Leslie's didn't really cut it for me. Breathe was just bad in the film version except for the visuals that accompanied it.
Mandy's gave me goosebumps my god
All of them have beautiful voices 🥰
I had no idea Jordin Sparks did Nina on Broadway!! She killed it
Some I could not hear well, so I am just going on the best ones I could hear.
The only thing that annoys me abt the movie version is that it’s a lower key
The original key is a bit harder to sing in and it might have been lowered to suit Leslie's range
The lowered key doesn't offend me. And I think it gives a laid back feel to the song
@@sorrynotsorry6 I’m not saying I don’t enjoy it. I think it’s wonderful and that the movie actress is super talented. It’s just not a fair comparison because everyone else is singing the og key and she’s singing lower then them. But that doesn’t take away from how good she is
@@katelyna4048 Ahhh I get what you mean, thanks for clarifying
I know right
