    You demonstrated perfectly why I don't like Stihl's all in one start controls. It is easy to tell when the choke is out on the husqy.

    what it really comes down to is preference. "tougher" is subjective and hard to quantify, and prices are comparable. between the two saws shown here, the husky is heavier. performance wise i'd use either saw, but if i had to take one apart to fix it i'd take a Stihl any day of the week.

    i got my stihl about 6 years ago and it came stock with the 14". and at the time of filming, the throttle/choke linkage was binding up and not working correctly. it's unfortunate, because the stihl is an amazingly easy starter otherwise. thanks for watching.

    When you compare two titans of the chainsaw world, you are going to have arguments split both ways. Just like comparing Ford and Chevy. Both have features and benefits that will split and divide the fans of each. Personally, I have a Stihl, but I'd be just as happy with a Husky.
    Stihl tends to have more broadband power and low end torque for power to get through the toughest wood. I've heard professionals praise this, and I've heard them say that the lower revs cut back on production and efficiency.
    Husky tends to have faster revs to enable you to fell a tree, some say, more safely as you can power through the final cut faster and get out of the way. I've heard professionals say this is a must-have feature, and I've heard professionals say the saw, chain and bar wear faster because of the extra wear from higher revs.
    If it were me and I didn't have either, I'd flip a coin. I don't think you will be disappointed with either saw, unless you are a professional Arborist and have a specific need that one saw fulfills better than the other. Otherwise, it's a close race when you put all considerations on the line like the dealership network, quality of the build, dependability to start and run when you need it, reliability to stay running on the job on-going, and operator reviews that use both.

    I used to think that too until everything changed. High prices smaller bars, Husqvarna is good man. I don't dislike Stihl I use both. Its an 042av. I'm not trying to argue or anything.

    When i bought a new saw the first two things i did, is take the dogs off and take the spark arrester screen out of the muffler. The chain should self feed its self, it should never have to be levered though. The first thing you did with the Stihl is try to feed it to much wood, causing the saw to lose rpm and chain speed. When these little saws are tuned and sharpened right they cut darn good.

      agreed...I have the ms180c but with a 16" bar and it melts through everything I dip it into. cut 10 cords of firewood in the last week with little effort. run a file through the chain Everytime you fuel up and no need for levering the saw at all...I can run the throttle one handed and it falls rite through maple, oak, Willow, pine.....yada yada.....but hey, huskys are nice too, kinda like how fat girls need lovin too.....rite

      Same here in central Pa. !! But there are stihl dealers every where , compared to husky ! But the main lodgers Use husky's, It is kind of one is for home owner market and the other is more geared for professionals. Wish Husky would have kept it exclusive that way . And price bears that out !

    I just (04/2013) bought an MS 180 C, and it came stock with a 16" bar. Don't know when they went from the 14" to the 16" bar... The reason the Stihl didn't start is because the trigger has to be pulled while setting the choke! They aren't fussy if you follow the starting instructions. ;-) Also - realize that the 32cc Stihl engine is only 80% the size of the 40cc Husky. That's a big difference! Wonder if Husky makes a 32cc saw? Great comparison video though.

    Husky old 51 mod screens out slightly larger primary holes, polished intake, & exahust, looking into preformance piston,rod from Japan. and Redmax 5300 out dealers shop, most power per Lb. untouched, same demensipons of an Echo 310, another fineas saw.

    if you don't over tighten the caps on the huskie , there not hard to turn hence the reason for the rubber gasket

  • @junyangli8882
    @junyangli8882 11 років тому +1

    I think the guide bar made a difference, 14 inch clearly isn't long enough, so you have to cut around to clear the log, which is not as easy as 16 inch just go straight through, at least that's my theory. And I did a little research, the 40cc husky isn't 20% more powerful than the stihl, its more like 10% more, its 2HP vs 2.2HP, so stihl have the better engine. Which also confirms my guide bar theory.

  • @johnclarke6647
    @johnclarke6647 6 років тому +1

    I do not cut anything much over 12 inches with my 180c. If I need to cut something bigger than that I grab my 271 or 391. It is not that I could not cut a 20 inch piece of wood with the 180, I could, but it is not good for the 180 to put it through that much of a load. The 180 is a one tank a day saw, very similar to it smaller cousin, the 170. Treat them gently and they will last you a lifetime. Treat them like a 271 and you will be replacing, jugs, bearings and seals annually.

    Just used my MS180 and 231 for the last 3 days solid, the 180 has a 14" bar and has been cutting timber up to 20" in diameter without complaint, never had to sharpen the chain once and only had to tighten it the once, took my Husky 435 (16" bar) to the 24" main trunk of the tree and it bogged down and refused to cut through it at which point my MS231/16" bar took over and blew the Husky clean into the weeds, I find Husky's to be over vibey, over weight and over rated, that 180/231 combination blasted its way through about 15/20 tonnes of Scott's pine and deadwooded a further 5 Scott's using less than a gallon of fuel, never had any issues with any of my Stihls in 20yrs of using them, Husky on the other hand are a nightmare in my experience...

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  6 років тому +1

      right on! I think husky's are OK, i have one (used to have two - traded the husky 455 for a stihl 029!) and think it's a fine saw, but definitely heavier and more vibey like you say. I'll definitely pick up a Stihl before a husky! and i agree with the little saw/big log combo - with a little extra time you can cut big logs with small saws, and save your back and keep you from getting tired too quickly.

  • @mstilson7355

    husqvarna is lighter, cheaper and much tougher than stihl. I own stihl and love them too but just experience will tell you. I cut maple faster with my husky than my stihl both 20 inch bars and equivilent cc's..

  • @johnclarke6647
    @johnclarke6647 5 років тому +1

    The 180 is about 30 cc not 82 cc. I have a 92 cc Stihl saw and it makes the 180 look like a toy. I own a 180C, too, and it it is an excellent saw for small stuff. A Husky 141 or 142. Is nothing but a Poulan, painted orange but the 180 is a real Stihl saw. Just remember a 30 cc saw is a one tank a day saw and if you use it more than that you will shorten it's life.

      It does, but this husky is also heavier than my stihl. When you come down to it they're both good saws. The stihl is still my go-to saw for anything. it's light, maneuverable, and totally reliable. thanks for the comment!

      True pros in the woods choose Stihl over Husky 75% of the time even though they cost more.
      Rarely see a Husky in the woods out here in the big timber.

  • @johnclarke6647
    @johnclarke6647 6 років тому +1

    The me 180 is a 31.5 c.f. saw not 82 c.f.. Some of the stickers may have said 32 c.f., which is why you misread it. The difference between it and the husky is the Stihl is a Stihl saw and not a Poulan wrapped in Orange clothes. The MS 180 will also still be cutting wood when that Poulans clone has died an early death, like all Poulan saws of this era. The me 180 also comes standard with a 16 inch bar and not a 14 inch, as you stated. Cutting big cedar is not a job for a 180, either. Like all Stihl saws, you pull it in cold start until it rolls over and then bump it up to warm start and pull it until it cranks. My 180c usually rolls over in two pulls and cranks in three pulls. No one needs the E feature on a 180. I am 72 and I crank my 180 with ease from the standing position. Now, my bigger saws, I do put on the ground to start them. The 180 is a one tank a day saw and is designed for stuff around limb size, although it will cut down trees, as long as they are of the small variety.

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  6 років тому

      You are correct. I misspoke in the video but added an overlaid note in the video that it is actually 32cc. My Stihl has a 14 inch bar and it does a great job of cutting everything from twigs to 20" logs. As long as you're not in it for business, a smaller saw in my opinion is always better because it won't tire you out. You can still cut big stuff with a little saw, you just need to cut into it from both sides.

  • @junyangli8882
    @junyangli8882 11 років тому +1

    Also, a husky 142 could cost about $270 where a STIHL 180 would cost around $230, and as his display, STIHL's design have user friendly writing all over it and not so much for the husky. BTW, if you do some more research, the MS211(STIHL) have a 35cc engine and have 2.3HP, and only cost $30 more. So in my book STIHL is a better chainsaw in every way.

    There are so many variables in your demonstration it means virtually nothing.
    The saws would need to be both brand new.
    The chains would need to be identical in type, grind and sharpness
    They would both need a factory tune
    \

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  10 років тому +3

      Thanks for your comment. Both of these saws are roughly the same age and both are in good condition. they both have the same style anti-kickback low-profile chain that i have sharpened myself (so the chains are not new, but treated more or less equally). they both are also factory tuned because the stihl has a non-adjustable carburetor and the husky hasn't been adjusted from stock. that being said. is it a 100% similar variable-free test? no. does it demonstrate that both saws function well? yes. it is what it is. this is my back yard, not a lab.

  • @popesnoopy
    @popesnoopy 6 років тому +1

    I run both.
    I maintain both.
    I repair both.
    Replacement parts & tech services r not only way more available for husqvarna but also way more affordable.
    I say screw stihl & all their little dealers & private fiefdoms.
    Larger Stihl saws may b metal but I guarantee they crush just as easily should a 4K Lb tree fall on it, but they also a lot heavier (which I can’t c as an advantage) + the fuel economy in my husqvarna (my daily driver) is unparalleled.
    Stihl clutch bearing far more accessible for regular maintenance needs - but (IMO) that’s like the only prop I can give 2 Stihl.

    ok the husky was 8ccs bigger BUT also 2" longer bar..there is hundreds of videos on youtube husky VS stihl comparable CC and chain.... the huskys ALWAYS start better and ALWAYS cut faster... how can anyone in their right mind say stihl is better. I have husky saws that have cut 100s of thousands of board feet of timber and hundreds of cords of wood and are over 30 yrs old..NEVER fail to start AND this video just proved it the husky took 6 pulls to start and the stihl took 10...stihls are an over rated POS

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  10 років тому

      yes, but my stihl ALWAYS starts, freezing cold, hot, or after having sat for months with old gas. The stihl is also lighter, more user friendly, and ergonomic. (in MY opinion!!) it's fun to see how strongly we feel about our saws and trucks. this is one of my most commented-on videos!

    • @446hemi
      @446hemi 10 років тому +1

      NO shihls are NOT lighter Compare and 028 to a husky 266 the 266 is more CCs and lighter then the 028. the Husky dont viberate near as much as a stihl. The new huskys are lighter better balamced and after a day of cutting with the husky you dont feel like you have gone 15 rounds with mike tyson like you do with a stihl...I knew with in the 1st 30 seconds of your video you were all about stihl...and how can you say stihl is more user friendly> you had to crank on that POS stihl 10 times...TEN. the husky only six. I have NEVER had any of my huskys NOT start due to hot or cold

    • @scrapmanindustries
      @scrapmanindustries 9 років тому

      446hemi incase you didn't know you can get a faster cut from a stihl saw by putting the aggressive bar and chain on it. a video doesn't prove anything. and of course its gonna take the saw thats least broken in longer to start. i have 5 stihls and all start within 3 pulls after the first start of the day. I've never used a husky but i can say that stihl is way better than the craftsman's my friends all use. mine blew up after a month which is why i now have stihl. from what I've seen huskys tend to be harder to work on on the spot where as stihl makes mostly everything as simple as possible for the user.
