  • Today, I'm telling you all about the best chainsaw for homeowners, the #Stihl MS180 C chainsaw. This is the very first chainsaw I ever owned! Let me tell you why I think this is a great first chainsaw, a great homeowner's chainsaw, or a great saw for a gift. It's hard to beat the value on this Stihl chainsaw.
    Chainsaws can get pretty pricey, especially if you are wanting to buy a quality brand. Many people would love to own a nice saw, but they may feel that it costs too much or that they simply don't have a need for a big saw. This homeowner's grade saw may be the answer. Check out today's episode for my full review.

    Saw arrived yesterday ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and today I cut about 3/4 cord of wood with it. Make sure you get an extension chord that is at least 12 gauge wire, minimum. This is my first electric in about 10 years, and things sure have improved. The self-sharpener works great, and it just kept cutting through some pretty decent logs. Wear your eye protection, and ear protection. Excellent saw.

    I am a homeowner with 5 acres and have had a 180C for over 10 years. It has never failed to start. It's light weight and a joy to use. It cuts amazing as long as you keep the chain sharp. It's a very capable saw - excellent for brush, vines, small trees, etc. Mine has a 16" bar and I have used it to cut larger stuff and it was very effective.

    I was looking for a first chainsaw and the salesman recommended this one, I’ve only used chain saw here and there but quickly realized how is user friendly, I couldn’t even think in upgrading, quick start and quick chain adjustments + being lightweight = just perfect

    I bought my dad an MS 180C as a gift back in 2012. He used it here and there around the house and when he moved Arizona he gave it back to me. I use this saw like crazy because I have a lot of trees where I live. It works well for quick storm cleanup, I've used it to fell many trees, I've used it to cut up tons and tons of firewood. I built a case to carry it in and the case also carries spare parts, gasoline, oil mix, rags and tools to service the chainsaw. I absolutely love this chainsaw but there have been some times I wish I had a longer bar and chain to cut through larger trees. This saw has never let me down or left my stranded. I highly recommended this saw to anyone looking for a chainsaw.

    Thanks for the review ! I Upgraded yesterday to the MS180c from my 30 year old Stihl 028. This a perfect saw for limbing, small trees, etc. I wouldn't go into the firewood business with it but for light duty work it's perfect ! Love the easy start and the easy chain tensioning system. Perfect saw and features for what I do.

    I have a 180C and recently upgraded to the 261 just because of the lack of power. I have hardwood trees on the homestead and grew up with powerful saws. I just couldn’t stand the lack of power with the stock 16” bar anymore even for smaller jobs, I guess I was just ruined growing up with pro chainsaws (my dad had us in the woods every summer….).
    I upgraded the 180C with a 12” bar and 0.50 gauge full chisel chain…..this feels like firing up the turbo boost mode. It’s now my favorite saw for small jobs and a perfect combination with the 261 which I use 90% of the time with a 16” bar. Every once in a while I have to put on the 20” but remove it as soon as possible…. 16” cuts way faster and feels more powerful.

    • @OldSchoolMillennial

      That's great that you found a setup you are happy with on the 180. And I agree about pairing it with the 261. I use those saws together sometimes, too. It's cool that you have those memories of working with your dad in the woods and that you are still enjoying using chainsaws. More power!

    Thank you for the video. I only use a saw about 2-3 times a year. Value wise...yes...the 180C is great. I live in Canada and they're currently on sale for $350 Canadian. I wonder about the power and longevity of this saw. The emissions sticker rates the engine for only 50 hours. I've been using outdoor power equipment for 30 years. From my experience, the lower the emissions durability, the lower the longevity and power, and the more issues you have. So, you might save money at the beginning but that can quickly disappear if you need to repair a saw. There are other choices....The MS250 goes for $460, the MS291 goes for $550 on sale, and of course the amazing MS261 goes for $720. You can even get a Husky 450 for $569 and its motor is rated for 300 hours of emissions durability. So, do you feel it's worth the extra cost and it's better to spend more upfront and get something that you know can handle anything you might encounter or just get a 180? Thanks

  • @andrewjtphotography380
    @andrewjtphotography380 2 роки тому +1

    I have that saw. It's crazy how much that little saw does. I think I only paid $199 at the time. Though it's a smaller engine it turns a faster rpm than I'd thought. So as long as its not bogged down it lops off branches pretty quick. In typical Still fashion though one time it starts in 3 pulls, the next in 10. Their trimmers are the same way.

    You can get the same results by purchasing the Oregon .043 16inch chain from Lowe’s. It will say stihl on the package. The Oregon is regular size not picco so it cuts the same as the .050. Big difference from the low profile picco I highly recommend it. The picco 16 bar that comes with the saw is low profile and perfect for the min boss.

    I just got the MS180 C MiniBoss from an older relative who hasn't used it in years. The chain is quite rusted so I'm going to replace it. Do you recommend that I stick with the small mini boss or should I upgrade the bar since I'm buying a new chain anyway? I'll be using it for limbing as well as cutting firewood rounds that are too long for my stove. I currently use a Ryobi c4618 (my first homeowner chainsaw) which sometimes feels like it lacks power to cut the oak wood. Thanks for any input.

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  3 роки тому +1

      Have you got it running? If you've heard the motor and it sounds good, then yes, I would buy a new bar and chain for it. When I received my saw, it came with a 16 inch bar with a picco chain. I have since upgraded it to a 14 inch bar and larger chain. With that upgrade, this chainsaw came alive in a whole new way. Check out this guy's video to see the upgrade I'm talking about (ua-cam.com/video/DrFM-8C-qV0/v-deo.html). Thanks for watching, man.

    I watched your 261 video - excellent - but you could have gone into exactly how to change the chaion on this saw. How to line up the splines - how to make sure the bar is on correctly (with close ups) etc etc. Your other video showed how to clean the 261 (I have 2 of them and learned a lot from that video) do the same with this one.

    Three additional questions for you. I have rheumatoid arthritis in my joints and I have a small garden tiller that really kills me whenever I pull on it to crank it up. Is this chainsaw easy to pull and crank? I thought I had seen that you have to hold in one button as you crank with the other hand. Is that correct? Also, what is the correct mixture or gas used for this chainsaw? Thanks.

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  3 роки тому +1

      These saws come with a spring assisted starting mechanism. The regular MS180 doesn't come with this feature. Honestly, I am more used to the saws that don't come with this so I sometimes forget and yank the cord instinctively. That being said it is a little bit easier to pull if you remember. I would suggest you go to a dealer and give one a try before buying. I am sure any good dealer would be fine with that. Also the correct fuel ratio is 50:1.

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, the MS180 and the 025 would make a great duo. Also, regarding flipping your bar, this should be done each time you sharpen your saw. This will help your bar to wear evenly and it will last longer.

  • @a1930ford
    @a1930ford 3 роки тому +3

    I am fixing to go shopping for this particular saw at my local hardware shop that sell Stihl products there. Is the bar and chain easy to replace on this machine, for a person who is somewhat fumblefingered these days? I have to small electric chainsaws, but both need new blades and I have cut down probably 45 holly's and shrubs around my home, which varied in size. I want to level the stumps to the ground and then add some root killer to kill them off so I can plant flowers or plants instead of having shrubs that always require trimming. I am thinking that I should go immediately to the mod with the 14" bar and new chain. The MS180-C is not listed specifically on their manuals at Stihl, but they do have the MS180. Are they the same chainsaw? Thanks for the video.

    • @OldSchoolMillennial
      @OldSchoolMillennial  3 роки тому +1

      Hi James, the MS180c means it has the easy 2 start function (spring system) Honestly I have found that either one is a good choice and sometimes I prefer the regular function as that is what I'm used to on my other saws. The 14" bar mod works great and it's an easy upgrade. There is a guy here on UA-cam called donyboy that has a good video on making this bar swap.

    • @a1930ford

      @@OldSchoolMillennial LOL! I went to all the various places listed in my home town that sells this particular brand of chainsaw. Not a one had them in stock, but my local TSC store says they will call around and can probably find a store that can ship it in right away. I went to the local Atwoods Farm store here and the guy took me to the back of the shop and showed me that he looked through maybe 100 different chainsaws they have there from Stihl, but none were this particular model. He told me he sold one just last night. going to follow through and get one though. Am I correct that any chain for it will work okay if it is not a Stihl brand? I found the 14" bar and a 53 tooth chain, but didn't pick them up tonight, as I want to get everything at once when I finally find this model. I am persistent, so we shall see. For storing chainsaws I have had the best luck running non ethanol gas. This keeps your carburetor from gumming up especially if you leave it setting for a time. In addition to running non ethanol gas if I know I won't be running a saw for a time I empty out the gas tank as well. By running a saw dry and using non ethanol gas ethanol gas I never have issues when storing saws. Thanks for watching!

    I have a 180 c saw. Great saw but you need a larger saw for larger logs

      You'll have to check your dealer, but a google search shows the price hovering a little above or below $200.

    Good saw? Sure.

    Lol these are bread cutters no good for anyone that cuts any amount of big wood ok for Lemming but even lemming I’d rather use a bigger saw with a longer bar and stand save on my back
