    One of the first REAL Northern Soul songs that was loved by so many (and still is).

    • @tollyt7465

      I don't dispute this was earlyish, but not as early as you think mate.. Even the Torch had been playing genuine NS a year or two before this was released, and the Twisted Wheel for at least 4 years prior.. This wasn't considered rare in NS circles, pretty mainstream in fact, but liked by many..

      @@tollyt7465 Unique in the fact Frankie Valley was in with the in-crowd I would say! prior to black artist US imports!

      I don't think they were dancing to Frankie. That song came out in 1970 and the Beatles had split up by then.

    • @drwhatson
      @drwhatson 2 роки тому

      Nope, they're dancing to something else. But the record was originally released in 1966. The 1970 UK chart hit was a reissue due to massive club demand.

    ~ This record should have been a hit in 1966, thank you Wall Street Journal & The Angels. (First posted 7 years ago in 2011.) Thank goodness I have assiduously maintained a comprehensive Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons library. This song like them all is magnifique, and please check “Beggin’” as well. A HOUSE record before the term was even thought of! Cheers, DAVEDJ ~

      I think the music has been dubbed over a different film. The dancing keeps going out of sync, and also the Beatles look more like the image from around '64, rather than '66. But I could be wrong.

      @rearly62 2 роки тому

      I am pretty sure the "first Northern soul song" has been attributed to several 45s released in the mid-sixties; Leon Haywood "Baby Reconsider" and Four Tops "I Can't Help Myself" are just two.

      Wow!!! I never knew that.

    • @anthonycolatrella2438
      @anthonycolatrella2438 2 роки тому

      That is a popular belief but it is incorrect--those are NOT the "ANGELS" doing backup---the 3 singers are Peggy Santiglia, Denise Ferri and Bernadette Carroll---at the time they were known as Jessica James and The Outlaws---the confusion arises because Peggy Santiglia did sing lead as a member of the "Angels" on "My Boyfriend's Back'. but she then temporarily left that group to join with the other two ---the true "ANGELS" consisted of Peggy and the 2 Albutt sisters--but that trio never backed up Frankie

    was that George Harrison dancing?. I Love this song. I plan to buy an old Dansette record player, like we had when I was a child.. The one's where you could pile up the singles in order to be played. so I can hear these classics as they were intended. don't like Cd's. also, I want a red and cream Lambrette like my Dad bless him had.n Maybe then I could relieve some of my childhood at least. Northern soul is in my blood, and in my heart forever, or until I get my wooden suit.that is. thanks.

    • @drwhatson
      @drwhatson 2 роки тому

      Bullshit. I was in London in 1971 and it was all Tamla Motown and Reggae (confirmed in Blues & Soul mag). The Southern funk obsession came later. The South missed 1,000s of great Soul records just because you were so arrogant as to think you couldn't possibly have missed anything significant.
      It was the same in 1977 when old big head Chris Hill and Robbie Vincent came to the Ritz in Manchester. Colin Curtis and the other DJs humiliated them by playing the hottest new imports and the crowd already knew them. :-D

    • @MickfromHooe
      @MickfromHooe 2 роки тому

      @@drwhatson By 1971 you'd missed, it but just re-categorised it as some sort of Northern ownership of our funk souls. Your very own 'new genre' Absolute twaddle! Mick from Hooe (Ujnabbed to live longer.

    • @drwhatson
      @drwhatson 2 роки тому

      @@MickfromHooe Rubbish. Most of the records played in the North after c.1971 were incredibly obscure imports, which I know for a FACT were never played in London. How? Because there were often only a couple of those 45s even in the country.
      I also knew quite a few Londoners who were '60s Mods and had travelled up to the Wheel and continued at later clubs. What "funk" was played in the '60s until JB came along? None. It barely existed until JB.
