It Shouldn't Of Been This Hard! - Ls Swapping A Tri Five Chevy Wagon
Вставка

- We're building a space ship!...
Well, it's actually just a run of the mill fuel injected truck motor in a tri 5 Chevy. But to me it's some space age stuff! So today we wrangle in the 6 liter/over drive transmission between the rails of the 56 Chevy.
There are a few tips and tricks for mating an older transmission to the LS platform. The slider mounts and proper oil pan made for a nice "easy" install. There where a few bumps along the way but we got the drive line bolted in place.
Take note of the custom transmission crossmember.....

One of the things I love the most about your channel, is that you work in the kind of shop, use the kind of tools, and do the kind of work that most of us "Blue Colar" guys use. You're videos are easy to relate to and more useful than a lot of the other channels that show you how to do it with expensive tools, expensive upgrades, and so on. Thanks for what you do. Keep up the good work.
Laying in freezing oil puddles is a blue collar pastime, good chunk a my life spent spitting greasy rust, ducking blood dripping from one hand & cursing some Godforsaken part or another, all worth it in the end knowing the right fluid is in the right place & the vast majority of bolts went back where they belong..... more or less
I spent decades sliding around on creepers, laying in fluids, bench pressing transmissions, and feeling my blood pressure try to burst my ears and eyes.. So when I built my shop in 2015, I bought a damn lift. One of the best things I ever invested in. I am too old to crawl around under cars, too heavy for most creepers, and too thick to fit with normal jackstands. If you have the floor to support it and the ceiling to fit one, a lift is VERY worth the expense for us building stuff ourselves types.
I have been a shade tree mechanic for years ,I know your pain of making things go as planned, or not . Keep at it , good stuff
Yeah unlike the fake shows on how ya build a completely restored car in 7 days. Blue collar workers like us might not have the best but we take pride in what we do!
I've been in a wheelchair for about 12 years, which has restricted my ability to work on cars like I used to. Watching you work like I used to makes me smile. Thanks for providing the kind of content that speaks to me.
There was a channel called Godspeed garage if I remember correctly. The young man was wheelchair bound but did some very nice work. I suggest look him up.
There is also a welder/fabricator called Chairslayer on UA-cam, he's more into desert running and drifting though.
Thanks!
@@jamesmooney6413 what cars really get you going? Dodge Ford Chevy wats your cup of tea
@@dylanbarnes9191 I'm a Dodge/Plymouth guy from way back. My dream would be to marry a Plymouth Super bird body to a modern SRT8 chassis.
Okay I'm officially a fan. All my UA-cam friends talk about you. Now I see why. I came looking for info about how to do the LS swap and really only found just what I needed to know here with you and it was fun to watch.... Thank you for doing what you do.
Have I mentioned the incredible benefits of removing the wheels from your Cherry Picker and lubricating the wheel shafts? It is utterly amazing how easily Cherry Pickers and Engine Stands roll around the shop with lubricated wheels. Floor Jacks also. When you are as old as I am stuff like that make all the difference on a long days work.
I love the way youre not affraid to think outside the box and get it done dispite the debbie downers and trolls. Good stuff. Just make sure of your converter to pump spacing. You dont want it jammed into the pump. A 1/8" (3mm) space is needed. Too much is also bad. Space in or out with washers. Measure washers to make sure theyre al the same thickness. Keep hammering. Watch Precision transmissions vids on utube to learn a bunch. Keep hammering. 🤙
"Shouldn't have," ya got-damn throwback!
I really enjoy the content you provide as I see myself in a lot of this. I've been on hiatus from wrenching on cars (bikes crowding every inch of garage space) but am slowly returning in my old age. This reminds me so much of my own struggles, tight work space, uneven garage floors, doing everything solo and making do with what you have. I'm getting ready to take the plunge and motor swap my 70 Elky, but am hesitant to get into until I get relocated as I've moved enough "projects" and it's not fun. I like your attitude and you are an inspiration for us average guys wrenching at home.
I really like what you've done with this car, and where it's going.
Nice fab work on the transmission crossmember. Triangulating the bottoms of the cutouts will make it plenty strong. I also got a kick out of seeing the leftover leg pieces of the jack stands making yet another appearance in your projects.
Hey Dan and Danni,I think maybe the reason you had the problem with the hoist on the 56 and not the 57, is because the 56 bumper sticks outward in the middle.I recently installed a sbc engine in my 1955 chevy belair with a cheap harbor freight hoist, and it hit the bumper long before the engine mounts lined up.Had to swing it in using a hoist leveler.Really enjoy watching all your youtube videos.-Bob
HAY DAN THAT WAS THE COOLEST VID. WITH THE 57 PLOWING SNOW. YOU AND THE MISSES ARE THE COOLEST!!! GARY C
You are so informative. I always get new ideas watching your channel.
As you get older my boy--everything is harder to do! 😆
Like how on this video you showed the pain and how those engine just do not drop in like magic. You have installed LS1 engines before and yet every one of those installed had there own problems. Great video
Motor swap is looking good. It’s about time to give that shop floor a good cleaning it looks like it is getting oil soaked 👍
thats what cat litter or spilled gas is for
Hey Dan, Seeing you have those new motor mounts there, you should trace them out and make them the next time you need them. I'm sure you can and it will be a lot cheaper for you. Just a thought. Love your videos. Take care and be safe.
A home-builder could fabricate mounts like that but it would be difficult and time-consuming--it won't make your life any easier--just buy em--way easier.
@@gymshoe8862 Then your a buyer not a builder !!!
@@gymshoe8862 If you heard Dan, he said they cost $200. For $200 I would make them. It doesn't look hard at all.
There’s no chance I would pay $200 for engine mounts. They are easy to fab.
thanks for drinking that brand of soda, for i have worked for them for 41 years now. love the chevys as well. peace
"It doesn't look that awful...heh..heh...ehhhh."
Your confidence is inspiring. 😂😂
I was swappin' engines in my 57 when I was 17 yrs old. All of boys were in auto shop doing this to our cars. I wen from a perfect running 283/Powerglide to a shitty 327 smoker and a Borg Warner T-10 with a blown 2nd gear synchro .... what fun ..... :0
You gotta love that engine hoist shuffle hay!😅
Nice Dan. I always like watching you do your thang.. Hey Dannie..
I added a 2 foot extension on my cherry picker .the steel shop in Tupelo Mississippi hooked me up with a free piece of oddball.
It's looking good, Dan. Dani is such a cutie pie. Reminds me of one of my Granddaughters.
So Happy to see THE WAG getting back together! Hope to see you guys driving the crap out of it..And have fun in it.. THE FAMILY WAGster! Love it!
Dan at least your choice of soda is right on as seen on the 56
Hey Dan love the channel! Rockauto has and adjustable throttle valve cable for like $20, like it said it’s goes from 28 inches to 48, part number Y752 company name is ATP. When I looked it up it was for my 88 camaro 5.7 so if you wanna look it up that way it’s under the listing of Detent cable in the auto trans section! Take it easy!
Never under estimate the power of flat black paint. That is one good looking custom transmission support.
DD Speed Shop, Hot Rods galore and expert metal fabrication, while you watch!! Looking great Dan!! Cheers!!
Dan it’s like the old saying goes if it was easy anybody could do it you never give up just improvise your a true old school hot rodder that why I love watching you keep up great work great filming Danny
Dan is so good natured fun to watch.
Sweet! Glad to see the 56 wagon again, I love that thing! Can't wait to here the LS run.
Hey Dan
Thank you for sharing
Take care
The fabbed trans crossmember turned out nice. Looks like those cutoffs from you tall jack stands are the gift that keeps giving.
8:32 told you all it was the squirrels

🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾!
Or those Trash Pandas.🦝
Always a great time
Great project!
I had a bellhousing break using solid motor mounts with a rubber tranny mount, ended up going with a solid tranny mount with the new transmission with no issues and driving the car the exact same
When has a hot rod build Ever gone as planned??!!!????. Great job.👍👍
My buddy put one in a old Chevy panel truck. Fuel injected and all. Lots of power
I had to put the chain on end of the hoist out the front end of the hoist gained about 2in had to do this for 90s trans am and have never changed it
Like One Car Guy and others say, you're doing it just like I have to. I will once in a while watch an Eastwood vid, everything's clean, all the right, expensive tools and I know they have a crew to clean and do most of the crap work. My shop I get it done with what tools I have mostly HF shit, it doesn't get cleaned until all my tools are spread all over or it's to messy to walk and then it's me that has to clean it all myself, great job Dan, keep these vids coming.
Vary awesome indeed. Doing a great job on that beautiful car. Keep up the great work. Okay
Well,…..
I hope you are happy.
Finally the 20ith time I’ve talked to you while watching your GLORIOUS channel my better half caught me.
I hope you are happy because she ain’t.
Love ya bro!
Hey Dan, awesome job!
Love the swaps, but I think everyone agrees, the LS looks better with the hood shut.
I found "dress up kits'...but they're expensive. They look like big block valve covers and hide the coils.
If you have some old stock big block covers, I wonder if you could modify them and make your own "dress up kit"?
Have Dani do some hotrod artwork on them.
Hey Dan 👋 double ck the flex plate and converter depth!!! U don't wanna start it and take out the front pump.
Cheap old carb engine lift plate with a little die grinder action bolts to the valley cover plate bolt holes perfect and gives 4 different positions back to front on lsx engines helps alot when hoists don't reach.
i used a 700r4 in my ls swap all i did was cut the cruise control arm off of another throttle body and 180 it and weld it on... it shifts great and makes plenty of line pressure
Nice work on that cross member! Great video, thanks for sharing! 🙂👍
Your always fighting the good fight, Makin the mistakes so I don't have to, I appreciate your efforts the only one not making mistakes is the ones not doing anything!
I would have done it the very same way. It's going to be a blast I'm sure.
My LOS sway was a night mare it is not easy you. Really have to be a wiring genius
Yep
I enjoy these videos so much !! Just keep doing what you do !!
I never had a clue when I started watching these channels how dang hard the keyboard orangutans are on you or others. Glad to see it go together. I do believe since the dirty dingo mounts sold well, someone could come up with a new steering box that would mount pretty much the same yet take a third of the space, even just a half of it so exhaust and other stuff has the room it needs. All after market stuff is so high in price but whats keeping it high is the thousands of cars at car shows showing off nothing but gold. The "Tony Lang" paint that looks like a pool of water that you can reach down into must be a fifty thousand dollar paint job. Thats crazy and then your afraid to drive for a fear of scratching it. Least you can get in your rigs and do a burnout or drive on a gravel road. Unless your a stupid rich politician, there is no reason that your car should cost more than your home and then can't use it.... nice job and video. You are not a idiot, they are
That motor mount setup is Saweeeet!, always struggle with those!
Coming together nicely. Cannot wait for vacation time when you break out the luggage rack , mirrors, spare tire holder lol
Doing A Awesome Job on The 56 Wagon! Like Your UA-cam Channel! Keep Up The Great Work My Friend ❗
Take those motor mounts to Brents and make a few "spares".
A Grinder and Flat Black , = Pristine Part,s 👍👍😎🇦🇺
Lots of hard work Dan but you got it man. Keep on jamming man this is going to be a very cool build for power tour. See ya on next one ✌️😎👍
I have done a th350 kick down, welded flat plate to cable cam.
After paying 250 dollars for those mounts,I would definitely make templates and make my own in the future
Great shows keep up the good work works of art as always
You're going to make me end up buying another car. I miss my 67 Fairlane wagon. Had an Aspen wagon too, but you're getting me stuck on tri5 wagons
As old zippy would say you're stunned lol
It’s called a flex plate. The ring gear is part of it. The ring gear can also be part of the flywheel. Or even the torque converter.
I love the Dr Pepper & hot dogs @21:00
I seen VGG mount TV cable thru fire wall and add a mounting bracket to gas pedal. That video was hemihalf. You might watch that one.
Omg was thinking you said Rain Deer 😅
Grasias
Great job your awesome man
Good man..love the content. Merry Christmas to you both...too soon?
Dani, @26:16 that look my dear was "GOLDEN" I laughed so hard my sides were hurting. Love Y'all.....
I'm wondering how much swearing was done when the camera was shut off on install lol. I'm glad I time lapsed the 318 install on my 86 pickup earlier in the year, lots of swearing going on but it wasnt heard lol. I try not to swear on camera but sometimes it hard when things arent going your way lol. - Jamie.
How’s that front grille work bench working out for you. Good job, Dan. Thanks for sharing. Gonna be one fine ride. 👊😎👍
Personally. I . Blame squirrels
Damn squirrels !

Ya I’m a real stabl...... SQUIRREL!!!!
An extra hand would make a big difference .
A 700r4 is a 4l60 the late model like '93 up is called 4l60E because of the electronic shift solenoids
Love the video
You get better and better pretty soon you will be able to get it in no problems and it will be like changing a tire lol keep on keeping on
Cool project.
We not laughing at you .We laughing with. Because we feel your pain. 😁😁😁😙😇😇
Just when you think you’ve seen all the pain and suffering, Dan just keeps on Given’r
Wassup is that Dan from DD speed shop
We're not laughing at you Dan We're laughing with you
Hit the shower champ!....grab some grub.....tomorrow’s another day!! 👍😎
Be careful Dan don't scratch the paint
As many motors as you pull in and out have you looked into air hose assisted engine hoist? It would make it easier since you are always a one man show
.
Can you show how you do the kick down cable? I’d like to know what parts to use because I have a turbo 350 behind an LS that needs a cable setup. Thanks
A "franken-bracket". Hey, whatever works. Good solution to a problem.
Awesome
Wow I'm not sure I can learn anything but how not to do it. LOL
LS swap everything.
Good job Dan and Daniel
Man any tips on hooking up trans lines catching hell on our 56 wagon
Come with me and you'll be in a world of osha engine picker violations 😆
Lol Danny will get it on tri 5 or 56!!! 🤣
fucking love you guys
