We met up with the legendary Charlie Sexton at 4Sound in Malmö and had a little talk about his life and career as a musician, and what it's like working with the icon that is Bob Dylan.
I'll never forget the first time I heard "Beat's So Lonely." I was standing in my driveway and my neighbor went by in a car blaring the song. I actually ran after him and stopped him at the corner to ask him what the song was. It's one of my all-time faves to this day.
I'm starting to see things in interviews that old Bob may be a control freak. It's his way or the highway in most cases whether you're playing with him or recording. The best example I can give is the Infidels album with Knopfler producing. And of course, no one is going to say anything bad about Bob (or anyone else until he/they die). Charlie's being kind here, and I'm sure he's sincere, but there's probably some things he'd like to say, but can't or won't.
He just seemed to pursue his love, talent, passion with music and with focus, clear headedness, stayed humble, healthy, and working at it, which give so many people joy. Glad he's still around healthy doing his thing. You are wonderful musician, artist and person. Thank you Charlie.
The first time I ever saw him was with David Bowie's Glass Spider tour. That riff he lay's down in White Heat has stayed with me all these years. I have hit repeat a thousand times.
It's amazing how he never fell into drugs and alcohol, he still sounds great and looks good for his age. What an amazing guitarist and performer. I was lucky to see him in the late 90's in a small club.
+Stella Apple why do you think Arc Angels broke up? Met them coming out of rehab and that did not last either sorry but he's no angel and should look good he's not that old... what do you consider old?
Gary Kinmond Had no idea about his drug and/or alcohol abuse, but there's no reason to be sorry to me. You sound so fucking bitter about it. Did he kick your dog on his way out?Where did I call him old? Before you come at me with your bullshit, please don't put words in my mouth. I said he looks good for his AGE, not he's old. wtf?
***** It was and I could find nothing on Charlie having an addiction problem but if Gary states he saw him coming out of rehab, first you're not supposed to tell those things, second maybe he was visiting Doyle and lastly if he did, he's doing great now and he looks good.
Been chasing Dylan since mid 70"s..I've seen over 60 live shows. Charlie is clearly one of his best guitarist's in his best and toured with. This guy is incredible...I only wish, that Bob would "loosen" the grip on him a bit and let Charlie go off on occasion. I'm 100% certain it would be well received! Love Charlie and thank you for all the great music!~
Charlie Sexton was a "teen idol" at 16 and didn't get much credit for being as talented as he is. When I heard the Arc Angels album I realized this guy is totally talented and a great musician. Now he's been with Dylan for a long time and Bob knows good players who can roll with whatever he throws their way. Love to see a rebirth of Arc Angels. Excellent album, Double Trouble the rhythm section.
Arc Angels get together every now and then and will do a pop up show where ever they are. I've seen them a couple of time at The Continental Club in Houston and Austin. I always keep a look out.
Write more songs and do more solo albums man! A lot of people from all over the world are waiting for it. We mostly remember the The Pictures for Pleasure album....Would be nice to hear new stuff for this generation. Full blown albums from Charlie. To be honest in The Arc Angels and Bob's band I always had my eyes on Charlie and him only. He still has quite a following to this day.
great example of someone doing what he loves...he is so genuine. playing with the big names and helping them shine without needing the focus to be on him. love you, Charlie
Incredible musician and talent !! Fascinating that through this interview there were some challenges being the interviewee... felt the need to play guitar towards the end... I have the feels that's how Charlie likes to talk best and he excels at that indeed... bring on more Charlie original music - no matter what style/genre !!! Thank you Charlie for the gift you have -you make a difference :-)
Got to see him perform with Arc Angels, after having been a fan of Charlies' since I was 16 and he broke out with Beat So Lonely. Truly amazing to see him perform live at the Bayou many moons ago and yeah, he is one of the greats when it comes to guitar playing. Was fortunate enough to meet him and Doyle after the show. Charlie is just a really cool, down to earth kind of guy. Love to hear more from him, hope he keeps creating and sharing with the world until the end. Another great collab, David Bowie & Charlie "White Heat", awesome.
So grounded, polite, and gracious. A pleasure to see him so many years after his breakout hit at age 16. Time's been good to Charlie. He must have had good parents.
I've been a fan of Charlie's ever since I first saw him on The Tube tv show. It's good to see that he's aged really well and long may it continue for him. An amazing musician.
Hi Charlie- Tou and your band used to sleep on my living room in Dallas when you played at Nick's Uptown. I still love ya! I cherish our beers and hamburger days! Keep Rocking' Cathy McCall Marquis
Love Charlie Sexton and His Brother Will. I have been a life long fan. Charlie has never stopped: he is either writing, playing, or playing music with friends in the business like Bob Dylan. I am a Dylan fan; but even more so because of Charlie. I would have love to see Charlie work with Prince. I hoped that would happen one day; but they are bot such amazing talents.
This Bloke definitely has the 'Rick Springfield' Gene. Wow. Still looks great. 'distinguished'. seasoned'. handsome'. and well spoken. I remember seeing him come thru Sacramento at the 'Oasis Ballroom, on that first tour of his. would have been '84 or 85. I was 25 that year. This little interview was delightful.
This cat is amazing all these guys from Austin. Just incredible players and humble. Just saying something like when I was a kid Jimmie Vaughan and Stevie I was just a kid! Incredible!
In 1985 I was 15 years old living in Taylor, Tx. More like living in Austin. Charlie and his brother Will were very prominent on the music scene there. It was a great time to be young.
Mr. Sexton has an depth of styles in his music across all genre's...Rock, Pop, Gospel, Blues and etc...One of my favorites is Cruel and Gentle Thing's...I.M.H.O. all of his work is great...
What kind of style - Charlie style !!! You are the legend and icon !! Love your music and your work !! This should have been more of an interview about you !! Look forward to your next chapters/stories and albums !! Still my fav all time artist !!!
Omg I so love Charlie Sexton lost my first cassette/CD but just over four months ago a great shop in Southport Qld found you come down under some time xx you so happy
What a nice man .. His watch is nice for him a man.. Where else do you tour Charlie Sexton on the road? I didn't know until today you played religious music too.. Isn't it all in my book?? Thanks for the coping by your words and music of guitar etc. And helping me with enotions and having them inside and out... That too is for all music.. Prace and keep playin it get ne through when needed......+ and smiles too!
Good interview! Charlie has been around the block several times & has played & recorded with some of the Greatest Musicians on the planet. I hope he has continued success & look forward to seeing him when he Gigs in Austin✌
"I am not impressed." Great lyric from a great song. He's my age. I was in high school when that tune was released. I loved that song and those lyrics. Fabulous musician.
It obliviously doesn't mean much to him but this guy is an absolute LEGEND and one day ,I hope, that he gets the recognition from the general public that other legends give him. People who don't court fame and fortune when it's laying at your feet is rare. Like unicorn rare. I have loved this cat's music for almost 35 yrs. Thanks Charlie!!!! WOW should be your middle name
I only ever knew him from the video for "Beat So Lonely" and never heard another song or interview.. I was shocked that he's American.. lol.. assumed he was British 😊
It really comes full circle. Mick Ronson toured with Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Review Tour and said the Songs & Set changed sometimes nightly. Saw a Picture from 1984 with Ronson & Sexton in the Studio and years later Charlie tours with Dylan. Charlie just played some gigs with Ian Hunter’s Rant Band with Alejandro Escovedo on Vocals. Charlie got to play Guitar on some Ronson/Hunter Songs. Full Circle
I know a young man struggling so hard on his guts. Can't believe he looks exactly like charley sexton, he's an amazing musician has no idea. He loves Bob Dillon.
David Carpenter GE Smith did 88-92 with Dylan and said he was offered a " very generous" amount to join Dylan's band but Lorne Michaels convinced him to keep the SNL gig to teach a bigger audience. Seemed like GE didn't regret the decision.
I've been following Charlie since 86/87 ? went through a real depressed time & his music and lyrics helped me through it.. moved to New Jersey and 1990 read in the Village Voice that he he formed a band called arc angel bought a ticket met his girlfriend best show ever and I've gone to a lot of shows.. thank you Charlie..

I'm a 80's kid. I heard it, and started crying. 😂😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎶🤘
ya,had to tun to the record store & get the cassette 85'

I heard it on Some Kind of Wonderful & it fits the scene so brilliantly, I often just watch the scene just to hear the song & the riff 👍👍👍👍
Phenomenal song! A timeless classic and featured during the best part of Some Kind Of Wonderful. The song itself is gold.
We need more role models like Charlie. No ego, no drugs, no alcohol...just passionate focus and still going. I applaud you Charlie. 🤘😎
He has aged well!
This guy has been working non stop since he was 16.
Since 12, apparently, as he says here. Wow!!!
He grew up so very nicely. What a gentleman.
He just seemed to pursue his love, talent, passion with music and with focus, clear headedness, stayed humble, healthy, and working at it, which give so many people joy. Glad he's still around healthy doing his thing. You are wonderful musician, artist and person. Thank you Charlie.

Absolutely, post 84 tour with mick taylor, can't remember anyone letting loose to much, as far as lead guitarist
Charlie Sexton was a "teen idol" at 16 and didn't get much credit for being as

His Charlie Sexton album from the late 80's was excellent. So under-rated.
ua-cam.com/video/Nmi67QbYdTA/v-deo.html that hair!
Absolutely!!! He is insane Talent!!!
I still have my album. He was a youngster living it up back then and it shows in that album.
Still routinely on my play list. Used to blast the cassette in my first car. Still sing the songs around the house at random moments. Part of my life.
Charlie is the BEST. ❤❤❤. HOLD ME.
Got to see him perform with Arc Angels, after having been a fan of Charlies' since I was 16 and he broke out with Beat So Lonely.

I had the biggest crush on Charlie when beat so lonely came out he still has that sexy raspy voice
He's a great guitar player. Have been lucky enough to see him live quite a few times.
I've been a fan of Charlie's ever since I first saw him on The Tube tv show. It's good to see that he's aged really well and long may it continue for him. An amazing musician.
I first knew his name from his cameo in Thelma & Louise. Awesome soundtrack & amazing performance with his cameo 💛

Reminds me of John Taylor from Duran Duran
Agree. For me a cross btwn John Taylor and Matt Dillon, when Charlie (and I) was younger!
I totally agree! I remember being a teenager and totally in love with Taylor, Dillon, Sexton and Morten Harket from Aha. They all looked alike.
tall guys with a prominent jawline
Åsa Elmroth haha agree 👌
Ha ha! Me too - John Taylor, Charlie Sexton and Matt Dillon!
What kind of style - Charlie style !!! You are the legend and icon !! Love your music and your work !! This should have been more of an interview about you !! Look forward to your next chapters/stories and albums !! Still my fav all time artist !!!

Still have his first LP.
"Beats So Lonely"
Glad to see him doing so well.
"I am not impressed."
Great lyric from a great song.
He's my age. I was in high school when that tune was released. I loved that song and those lyrics. Fabulous musician.
Rome and Juliet Louis and Mademoiselle Antoinette...
Me 2..
Just saw the ending of Some Kind of Wonderful again and love Beats So Lonely.
Me too, that scene (with Charlie’s music) is all kinds of awesome!
Kool interview . Thanks
Because he was so adorable in the 80s and other musicians were jealous!
He's still good looking!! I always thought he was British for some reason!
i guess you could say there is the picture of natural genius and talent; really appreciate the interview and getting to know charlie a bit; nice job;
Under the Wishing Tree is one of my favorite albums of its era.
It's 2023 when I'm watching this and he's STILL a hottie. I was 14 when I heard his first album.
Fantastic guitarist.
Very nice guy i mett him austin tx at 6 sth 1998 very natural cool person
It obliviously doesn't mean much to him but this guy is an absolute LEGEND and one day ,I hope, that he gets the recognition from the general public that other legends give him. I love his song from the movie Telma and Louise very cool.
Love his music
I want to hear Charlie's 'little concept' now!
It really comes full circle. Mick Ronson toured with Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Review Tour and said the Songs & Set changed sometimes nightly. He was born in San Antonio,TX
I remember him jamming with David Bowie , I wanna be your dog!!
White Light White Heat!
Looking forward to hearing Charlie play this week with Elvis Costello in Vancouver BC.
Such a great guitarist. Watched him play with some of my favorites, including Lucinda Williams, Chuck Prophet et al.
you are still hot!! I had your tshirt and used to sleep in it== loved your album- still listen to it today!
Charlie & John Taylor were my biggest crushes!! Especially Charlie after the song & video for IMPRESSED. He’s still looking MIGHTY FINE peeps!!!! Xo
Beautiful man and well-spoken, too.
Being a side man for Dylan is probably pretty challenging at times, but it's a good gig. Hope he has been paid well.
David Carpenter GE Smith did 88-92 with Dylan and said he was offered a " very generous" amount to join Dylan's band but Lorne Michaels convinced him to keep the SNL gig to teach a bigger audience. Seemed like GE didn't regret the decision.
Bob booked only weekday gigs so the guys in the band could still do SNL - there's a great interview with G.E. where he tells the story.
As a kid I LOVED "Beats So Lonely" and I remember his "Archangels" band project...so this interview is Dope
I love youuu Charlie Sexton
😍😍😍😍😍
I only knew that one song, which is excellent. Seems like a good dude.
You’ve got a lot of catching up to do.
Damn, son. You still look great! "Impressed" was my favorite song in 1985.
He's still so handsome 🥰
That Arc Angels album is amazing
no one talks about bob…ever. charlie knows who butters his bread.
yeah, the cagey thing is pretty cringeworthy.
oh still got a crush alllllll the way back from 1985
or maybe 86?
I love Charlie ❤️❤️❤️
What an ace!
Such as a class act, anyone know if the Arc Angels has new recordings in the works? They were such a great group.
