One advice I can recommend is Get your Scuba diving license. the Reefs out their are amazing. you will not see anything like that back in the US. also on your downtime check out the Churaumi aquarium really nice place for the whole family to visit. and its free for active marines.

I used to live in Okinawa, Yomitan, Nakagami District around 2010-2014. We lived off base, outside of Tori Station. When I was there the building behind ours caught on fire towards the 9th or 8th floor. Since I lived on the 8th and the fire was on the floor straight across. When I would look down in front of the building (before fire) there was a farming field to the right, more apartments that were way smaller than our building, some above ground family sites, and a path. One of my favorite things to do was to sit outside and watch the planes land on my left. The area wasn't built up too much and I liked it like that. I would enter the Tori Station Gate where the Class Six is to drive to Kadena and Foster. I truly miss it and am planning on retiring there!

I'm dying over your "I don't even know what this is" vibe. I love it! Reminds me of my first few months living in Japan, great feeling. (Been here over a decade now) Oh, and by the way, that sign on the wall is not your street name, it says "Christ is resurrected. He beats death." Pretty random, but that's actually what it says.

Our home was on a hill where we overlooked the China sea. I will always remember those sunsets. The locals I meet where the nicest people. Became good friends with one, Sayoko, who came to the states and visited us. I often wish I could go back and visit there again.

Thanks for the quick tour. Brings back memories. Okinawa was my first duty station way back in the 90s. Futenma. I remember I almost died trying to get acclimatized to the humidity when I got off the plane, lol. I don't really remember anyone being able to stay "out in town" back then? Single Marines and those on accompanied tours with families that I can remember, stayed on base in base housing. But I could be remembering that wrong because hey, I was single and young so life was all about going to the seawall, beaches, clubs, FOOD, "Gate 2 Street" Naha and Kadena, lol. And the arcades. We didn't have any restrictions on travel/libo when I was there but that was years ago. I do remember most all cars being white back then and LOTS of rust. Miss "My House" right down the hill from Futenma, the Taco Rice and just hanging out. 90s was a great time to be young on "the rock". Semper Fi

My mom worked at Video Shack just off base. I remember watching sooo many movies in there while she worked. The ladies next door at Casa Taco would occasionally feed us in exchange for getting to touch my sister’s blonde hair (that wasn’t as weird as it sounds lol, blonde hair and blue eyes were considered good luck).

Stationed at Kadena from 88-91 lived off base the entire time. We had to live off base until we made E4 we had no curfews. My first house had no phone we moved eventually to a house that had a phone. There were no cell phones no GPS no cable tv. We had one tv station and one radio station. (AFRTS) . I loved my time there. Went back again in 2012 with my wife for 3 months and I’ve lived in mainland Japan for 4 years. Been back a few times to visit the other islands. There are 150 islands that make up the Okinawa prefecture I’d encourage everyone to visit them!

Keep doing what you're doing and use key polite phrases in Okinawan. Learn to bow like they do and the whole Island will open up to you in ways few ever see. Don't compare where you are to anywhere you've been. See it with a fresh perspective like they do and I promise you won't want leave. I know where you live! My daughter and her husband live in Yomitan, when I was visiting them I probably walked right past your house on my way to Toguchi beach. They live close to the high school NE of you by where the road that Starbucks is on T's at the top of the hill left to Tori station right to their neighborhood, : Oki , loved Yomitan, and Toguchi, hope your deployment is a good one and you get to experience all the cool things Okinawa has to offer, if you haven't been Okuma is a great place to spend a weekend. Enjoy!

Okinawa was basically our second home port since we loaded marines all the time there from Sasebo. It was a blast

I was in mainland Japan in the early 90s. Yes the people are honest and friendly and while there is a lot of traffic the drivers are very courteous .

I'd rather be back in Oki then here in Texas, any day. Was stationed out there from 03-05, loved it.

You should see the vending machines in places like Tokyo. Japanese love their vending machines. They sell just about anything you can think of. I'm not sure if they have anything like the Carvana vending machines for cars; but if anyone else the world would, it would be them.

I always tell people about how nice it was to get hot drinks from the vending machines. Those cans get HOT, though. 😊

I was in from 2005-2010. I was stationed in Camp Hansen from 2006-2008. I miss everything about it.
I especially miss the food right outside Camp Hansen, the beef yakisoba from White Kitchen and the Taco rice and cheese.😅
If it's not too much to ask can you please make some videos about the food there at those places?
I hope to one day take my wife and kids to Japan.
