If Paravision International hadn't sold the library to Hallmark Entertainment it would be owned by StudioCanal. StudioCanal is a great company, because they actually care about preserving their film negatives.

So filmation managed to beat Disney in having a sequel with the original main villain having a random never before seen or mentioned equally evil sibling.

Nimona is my favorite animated movie. It’s so underrated and I nearly cried during the ending.
If I had a nickel for every time the ghost of a company that died years ago released a new movie, I’d have two nickels.
Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Metal. 🤟
ironic, isnt it?
In addition to sounding obviously evil, Malus is also a type of apple tree, so make of that what you will.
And a combo of male and phallus.
Watch Phelan's Wicker Man review. My joke makes sense in context.
Possibly, but that seems a bit too clever for Filmation. It's spelled Maliss on Wikipedia anyhow, which makes absolutely zero sense.
@@chemistryguy ... are you aware that the word Malice exists?

Very aware. Filmation spelled it differently from either definition.

I absolutely loved this movie as a kid. I loved all the different female dwarfs, the hippie Mother Nature, the outrageously evil brother of the evil queen, and how kind and strong Snow White was. The owl scenes were annoying though lol
OMG I loved this too! Also that Thumbelina movie that I later found out was actually an anime series that had been condensed into a film.
I really related to Thunderella
Yeah, if I had seen it back then I woulda probably be hype for the many female characters with very different designs. It's pretty neat.

There is a film print selling for $250 on Ebay. Been there for a while strangely.
Sadly, the original film prints were discarded when the Filmation library was sold to Hallmark Entertainment. The only existing copies are digitized 16mm prints that were released on PAL videotape. So it would be upscaled and probably not have a good picture quality.
@@Father_of_Death The print on eBay is 35mm, unless the original source was 16mm
@@eugeneketaminekrebs3403maybe an exec at Universal could buy it.
I think that the main strength of the Filmation movies were how invested most of the actors were and how they at least sound like they are enjoying their roles. A few could have been better but they aren’t as unbearable to listen to as Dingo or a majority of Good Times/Jetlag/Bevenfield voices tend to be. And the music is pretty decent to listen to even if the lyrics are mostly forgettable.
Isn't it ironic how the only "unofficial Disney sequels" Filmation made were not only based on Walt Disney's first two animated movies but also how Disney *NEVER* made official sequels to them despite their Direct-to-Video craze in the 90s and 2000s?
I guess Filmation got lucky that their "sequels" ended up being the only "sequels" we got to those movies.
Disney didn't want Filmation's sloppy seconds? xD
Disney did make some short animations with the Dwarves and that show the Seven D.
Even though it didn’t live up to the original
I think Disney didn’t want to mess with or take any risks with the companies very first movie.. Snow White has never had any follow up to her story. Yet even Aurora has had one (it was awful tho)
Closest was her appearance in Ralph breaks the internet or cameos in Disney games I guess
They’ve always been pretty protective over Snow White, I mean they even made her original voice actress sign a contract that said she could never use her “Snow White” voice for anything else
@@MrXemnas1992 Not even Filmation would want Filmation's sloppy seconds if it lived long enough to consider it.

I loved Irene Cara’s voice acting in this. It was so soothing to me as a boy.
It’s pretty sad that all these Animation studios that were peak in the 80s met a pretty anti-climactic demise.
Rankin Bass last project is Santa Baby! A pretty mid Christmas movie that isn’t well known.
Filmation last project is a Snow White “sequel” movie that is a huge mess.
And Sunbow Entertainment last project….is the Cramp Twin.
Filmation used to make the most faithful of all onscreen Tarzan adaptations. Though it’s lighter and softer than the comics books by Burne Hogarth which inspired it.
...I kinda wish we'd gotten The Challenge of Cinderella, ngl. I'm sure it would've been terrible, but I feel like I _need_ to know what it would've been about at least.

while not subtle in the slightest, there IS a bit of genius to calling the villain "Lord Maliss": the whole idea that the Fruit of Knowledge from the story of Adam and Eve is an apple when, iirc, apples wouldn't have been known in that region at that time is actually a Latin pun from when they were translating the Bible into that language, since the Latin for "evil" is identical to the Latin for "apple", "mal", and of course that's where "malice" comes from, too
(if you're curious, there's really no description of the Fruit of Knowledge beyond it being exactly that. i've heard that a more likely candidate for what it could really look like would be a pomegranate, or that it could've actually been _wheat_ and the whole story is a metaphor for the Neolithic agricultural revolution)
It's also genius because, well, what caused Snow White to enter her slumber?
I think Maliss as a Snow White villain had a lot of potential, it's just a shame the movie wasn't that good.
Fruit is clearly a metaphor for knowledge, like if people KNOW about evil, they cannot resist doing it due to our own nature, and it also brings knowing mortality with it, as instead of living carefree in the Garden like magical forest critters, men get depressed about death... I'd call the villain "dude Applebottom" instead though.
I actually really like the idea of all the henchman having a party after the main baddie is dead.
"WOOOO! DAY OFF!!!"
"Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the dumbest henchmen of them all?"
Magic mirror: "That cigar chomping owl and his batty friend."
The owl was pretty annoying with the badly written joke, unlike his adorable bat friend
have to admit, Scowl's body rotating around to match his head while he's yelling at Batso is pretty funny ;)
I remember loving this movie as a kid. I had it on a disk and every character (even female ones) was voiced by the same nasal man.

5:04 Katzenberg, the King of Petty said that? That’s odd considering he made Dreamworks to directly compete with Disney and was one of the producers of Shrek.

@@MrXemnas1992 Personally I prefer Madagascar over The Wild. And AntZ other then the setting involving ants is a completely different movie from a Bugs Life.

That bit where she's hitting Malice and he's not phased, giving me Castlevania flashbacks XD
I still have a HUGE soft spot for HAPPILY EVER AFTER as something I used to watch on VHS as a preschooler. It's not a great film but it has a lot of little fun elements to it. Like as an autistic kid who had a lot of trouble in a school environment I related quite a bit to Thunderella having trouble with her powers while wishing I was as cool as Critterina.
I revisited this movie in college watching it with my roommates who had never heard of it, & we all LOVED Lord Malice in his evil giggling ways. Very Vincent Price-ian.
Personally I still love that regardless of her effectiveness, Snow White was willing to fight back & she's technically the one who killed him with him own magic cape. (I always found it so unsettling that it's implied he killed his own goofy minions with that cape.)
Rest in power, Irene Cara. "Flashdance (What A Feeling)" is one of my favorite songs, & I still love the ending theme she sang for this movie.
Clearly Loréal didn't think Filmation was worth it

Hilarious, but also fascinating and informative about how Filmation went down. Love their list of planned but unproduced films. Filmation also did "JOURNEY BACK TO OZ", with Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland's daughter, as the voice of Dorothy. Voice actors were recorded in 1962, with the film not released until 1974.

Kinda want to see Snow White and the Emperor of the Night
Edit: have every Disney protag fight Emperor of the Night
No lie, it has potential, provided that the emperor of the night has more elaborate agency beyond just getting souls. To be an iconic villain, he has to shed out the now cliched Faustian shell and be his own thing.

Snow White In The Land Of Doom is honest such a metal sounding title. I genuinely wish they'd kept that title.
I think out of all the proposed pseudo-sequels, I'd would've liked to see what The Son of Sleeping Beauty was about.
I really enjoy this series of Pseudo Sequels to Disney's classics. If they did their own thing I feel they'd be a lot better. Like the titular Emperor of the Night was actually pretty cool.
It would’ve fun if they later tried to do a “sequel” to The Little Mermaid, which would be awkward to justify it as a sequel to the original fairy tale considering what happens to the original little mermaid in her fairly tale.
Even if they did their own things, Don Bluth would still blow them out of the water as he was Disney's true main competitor. Filmation was never really that great in terms of animation expertise or creative. Even the emperor of the night seems like a poor man's Chernabog.

Can't be much worse than when Disney uses direct-to-video or TV series to spin their own pseudo-prequels to their classics!
The flimation Snow White is a guilty pleasure of mine. I prefer the long hair and soft blue colour scheme to Disney's design.
Still can’t believe that Irene Cara died two years ago, I didn’t even know until last year.
In addition to the celebrities, you mentioned, you forgot Carol Channing, who voiced Muddy. Then, there was Linda Gary, who voiced a couple of the dwarfelles; she was probably best known for voicing, Peter Parker‘s aunt May in the 1990s Spider-Man.
I never saw the movie as a kid, but it blows my mind on why it took so long for the film to be released to the public. And, of course, it had to be trigger-happy - or in this case, lawsuit happy - Disney.
Which relates to why the NES game was canceled. This Atlus-developed game was set to be released in 1991, but an indefinite delay of the film’s North American release resulted in the game’s cancellation.
I remember renting this movie as a kid. I'm surprised you didn't mention the weird anti-smoking thing with Scowl at the end, where someone takes his cigar away and suddenly the cough he's had throughout the movie is gone and he can instantly breathe better.
Next, we'll get Winnie the Pooh's unofficial sequel...
Oh wait
AKA the CCP.
“Thunderella’s Song” still slaps.
All of the songs are pretty good or at least the instrumentals are.
Honestly I like the idea of the Princess being the one to save the Prince for once. It flips the cliche of fairytales on its head and is always a nice change of pace. This is why I’ve always liked the games where Princess Peach is one of the hero’s and fights the main villain. The change I would have made is give Snow White Thunderella’s arc of not being confident with herself and abilities and the Dwarfelles all encouraging Snow White to overcome her fears. She is unsure of herself and doesn’t think she has what it takes to be a hero because she’s a Princess and that Princesses can’t be brave and fight evil. This way we have a more compelling reason for the Dwarfelles to be there and also promote some girl power without it being too sexist or in your face.
Filmation: (titles movie Happily Ever After)
Intern: why would you call it that?
Filmation: I call it covering my tracks.
And then the studio went down in flames
A whimpering out end to one of the most forgettable animation studio ever. I can't think of a single true classic associated to them. Anything they do, another studio can do it better than them. Even the He-Man of Mike Young Productions topped their version. Maybe Fat Albert is their most memorable flagship show and even then, I am not certain it is widely remembered by others than by its devoted fanbase. I have heard positive things of Mighty Mouse and their take on Star Trek as well, but that's really about it.
The only commendable thing I can say about them, is that they did their best to keep jobs localized in USA. But when others can do it cheaper and better, they don't really stand a fighting chance in hell.
@@PolemodromeTo be honest, they dealt mainly in volume, as in the late 60's up through the 70's Filmation and Hanna-Barbera were getting quite a lot of gigs from the three networks Saturday Mornings. That's why Filmation was known for factory producing their shows, and the limited, constantly reused animation. I'd say they had some decent sci-fi fare, they had a pretty good Batman series in the late 60's that came off like an animated version of the Adam West show, but a TERRIBLE 70's Batman cartoon that actually had Adam West and Burt Ward in there. Even they couldn't save it, and it was also the reason why The Joker wasn't in the Legion of Doom in HB's Challenge of the Super Friends. But for every The Archies or He-Man the studio produced, we got crap like "Will the Real Jerry Lewis Please Sit Down" or "Sports Billy."
@@mightyfilm Sport Billy is actually a German-French-American coproduction, even though it was still a Filmation product based on a German comic book series.

@@mightyfilm
I get what you're saying. It's a perfectly sound argument. Back in the days, the demand was such, the difficulty to offer forced them to wear the quality of their productions dangerously thin. It's basically how Ruby and Spears came to create their own studio from Hannah Barbera.
At the very least, Filmation didn't crap out an obnoxious amount of formula clones like HB did with Scoobydoo, I give them that.
I always forget how many 80s cartoons used Star Wars sound effects, like the light saber clashing sound when the Prince gets zapped in this, and Transformers G1 used a LOT of stock Star Wars SFX, as did the other Sunbow shows at the time. I tried looking up if Lucasfilm had a licensed sound library at the time but couldn't find anything conclusive, they have one now but apparently not back then?
Just something I noticed, those OT Star Wars sound effects are indelibly burned into my brain so they always stand out when they're in something else.
16:14 - 16:17 I strangely appreciate how they synced the thud sound with Malice bending his knees

No joke, I've been wanting to see you review this movie since 2016 and yeah the wait was worth it!
It's over 30 minutes, it's well-researched, it dedicates a good bit of it to the movie's backstory (including some details I didn't know from Lou Scheimer's book!) and, y'know, it's funny and entertaining like always!
Also, it's funny how you mentioned Grumblebee making a cameo alongside Igor because the Sunflower is voiced by the same actor, Jonathan Harris... yeah, he was kind of a Filmation regular at the time, the more you know!
The dwarfelles seem like a cross between the Chippettes and the students from Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School.
32:00 I'm surprised none of the He-man villains have done that
This traumatized me as a child. Like, full-on running away from the VHS cover in Blockbuster level fear.
Also, what's with animated villains and having evil siblings who only show up to revenge their deaths? Along with Maliss, you also have Nasira (Jafar's sister), Clayton's sister, Morgana (Ursula's sister), Cooler (Frieza's brother), and even Zira, though she was more Scar's mate than a relative of his.
Nostalgia of the previous villain + easy new motivation.
Well Morgana just wanted the Triton and rule the sea’s like her sister, she could give less of a damn about Ursula and hated and envied her.
It's just an easy fix for a sequel villain, one who wants revenge for the heroes killing their relative.
That and it's just easier to cash-in with a villain's popularity without using said villain since they're dead.
there was a sequel where Clayton had a sister??

11:52 Bats are associated with vampires and are a common visual motif in horror.
If a bat had to be the comic relief, I'd parody the hell out of the vampire motif. It has potential, provided that there is a comical contrast between the creepiness of the bat's demeanor and the end actions. Imagine a twist where the horrific tension of a scene is cancelled as the bat is just sinks fangs into a juicy fruit instead of an actual person's neck.

My grandmother that passed away last year had this tape. I know we're all dissing it right now but it brings me very fond memories. I remember it being epic. Then again, I haven't seen it since I was a child so who knows really, haha. I still find it cool that they gave them powers though 😊
I feel the same way. My dad bought it for me in the early 90’s on vhs and it is still one of my fondest memories ❤
I have to say, I really thought Phyllis Diller was gonna say "I love the retirement".
