  • The Ducky Outlaw 65 is one of the best custom keyboards in a very unique way. You get to build it from the ground up with mechanical switches, dampening and lubing if necessary. In this case we're using the new Cherry MX2A switches which are....interesting.

For $299, I would rather buy a mode keyboard.
The draw might be to "build it yourself" but I think paneling just invites more user error.
People can also just build a QK or Zoom keyboard just as well for like $200ish shipped.
Ducky might want to take a better look at their competitors and reevaluate this.
Especially when we have something like the Cycle 7.

The misalignment was exactly why I ultimately didn't preorder it. It is simply unacceptable for its price. They should have just went with the standard top-bottom 2-piece assembly found in most custom keyboards these days and that would have completely eliminated even the possibility of misalignment. Also there is no doubt that they are going to run into problems color matching the different pieces when they want to release other colors, because that's just how aluminium anodization works. If anything, I suspect they have already ran into the problem, and that's why they're only releasing a silver and a black one for preorder.
The sharp bottom edge is also a weird mistake for Ducky to make. Overall the build quality of that chassis makes it look more like a start-up job than a company that's had over a decade experience in producing keyboards.
Their price is at around the same range as the Mode Envoy (or not, since they include the switches and keycaps), but they are simply not there yet. I wish they had not tried to outdo everyone with their first attempt with such an elaborate design and end up messing it up this badly; they should have rather just followed suit with a more common design and get some know-how under their belt first. As it stands, the Outlaw 65 isn't a question of being overpriced, it's straight out a bad quality product that simply isn't worth buying.
Okay maybe if it costed $100 I'd buy it. But honestly I don't think it's worth anything over $150.

Don’t know why it humored me so much, but hearing Dmitry describe the cherry switches as scratchy really got me! Welcome to cherry switches, haha! Many enthusiasts really like this.
Wheww, $400 would get you such a nice custom though, please folks, don’t buy this without at least exploring some custom options (e.g. the Mode Envoy, which is in stock)!

The assembly method seems very ambitious to not have any QC issues. That price is steep but I guess it's in line with established manufacturer pricing, hope they'll release more affordable options in the future. The bonus of this board is the adjustable feet compared to many others.

I gotta ask you, because I always see comments like yours on keebs where keycaps colors and case color have wildly differing colors and no semblance of uniformity, does that not matter to you? Or is it a case of you loving the different colors themselves so therefor uniformity doesn't really play a factor? To me, uniformity is king, but I really wish I could be a bit more chill about it, because it has, and will, ruin possible buys for me :)

great job on the stabs! glad to see y'all exploring more of the custom and enthusiast keeb space.
for future keeb videos, it's HIGHLY recommended to hold/brace each of the PCB's hotswap sockets when placing each switch. it's cumbersome but generally a good idea. sadly, hotswap sockets aren't the most secure and can snap off from constant removal & placement or switches or coming from poor yields. and it's not an easy fix.

In comparison to where custom keyboards are going, I am not even sure that this keyboard is competitive in the market when there is much better for cheaper. As other mentioned before there are other keyboards such as the Mode, Melatrix and QK series which are at the top of the game right now. Ducky must do better especially in regards to their experience

    • @sgarridojr

Indeed, this sits in a limbo zone. Too expensive for what it offers. Why would anyone pay 400 bucks for this where there are so many options. This would be maybe appealing at 150 usd but still lots of competition at that price range

  • @Walkdthock

Neo65’s gonna blow this out of the water lool! It’s gonna be an in stock 65% board too. Trimode, full cnc alu, multiple color options, multiple plate option, multiple mount style, multiple weight option that only costs $115 for all those specs config lol!
Heck, even mode envoy is considered expensive as an entry board because of neo65 and cycle7 but still way cheaper than this ducky and it’ll shit on it too loool!
They late to the party and still wanna be relevant but took the wrong approach. This board’s gonna be the next drop sense75 lol

I think Ducky tried to make a "premium" keeb, but mis understood what made a premium keyboard premium. They thought it was unnecessary machining with an overly complicated case that adds functionally nothing for the user. All those extra parts that need to be screwed on do is give it an extra surface for ping to resonate off of.
Plus the lines aren't even hidden, its like a Tesla with all those panel gaps. My KBD67 back in 2019 had a smaller line around its sides.

  • @MarbsMusic

That's quite a bit for those inconsistencies in the frame, definitely interesting in building my own eventually but can't decide on what to start with. We picked up another Azoth for your family, this time with the brown switches which are nice but not my preferred so plan to install some Glorious Raptors later this week for some extreme clicks. I may take the NX browns, which are very nice, and use them in a build.

300 USD is way too much when you're not given at least an option to use another layout rather than the normie one, even the Neo65 costs like half the price and let's you pick many different options regarding not just the layout, but the overall build. Probably the only advantage from this one: at least it's not a crappy "Glorious" board, but still a mediocre option due to the misalignments present in the case's construction.

others have already said this, but I'll add to it. prebuilts are becoming more and more expensive (atleast mainstream brands) while DIY kits are getting lower and lower in price. This design does nothing but artificially inflate the price with no actual use for the consumer. When we have things like the Neo65 starting at $89 DIY, these name brand keebs from the likes of Razer, Corsair, Ducky, and GMMK, are simply not worth it anymore. Atleast the Razer and Corsair kits include switches and keycaps. For $299 you could get some incredible sets that likely wont have QC issues, will look and feel much better too. Look at the mode Envoy.
Hell, look at the Neo65, even the highest tier, E coating, chroma weight, tri-mode pcb starts at

Most of the boards look pretty much the same and they all lack things like media control keys, macro keys and even a proper wrist rest most of the time. Yet they cost so much more. Sure the typing experience is great no denying that but I just don't really get why all these boards look dull as hell and lack any comforts a modern premium keyboard should have. Ducky is out of touch. 65 is old news. 75 and 96 percent kits are all the rage. Also 300 dollars for even an excellent keyboard is insane these days. Market is insanely competitive right now with all of these same features. GMMK Pro, Nuphy, Ketron, and etc. Also plenty of bulk buys and boutique keyboards that are cheaper. Why bother? They're 4 years late and 200 dollars over priced.

The keyboard is barely over 1kg, this is as much of a scam as Hyte's SR65, as a Taiwanese I will never recommend these to anyone. Such a shameful money grab from these Taiwanese companies.

God there is no reason to buy this at the price. It looks like nothing more than $220 tbh. Too many better options this is a massive flop.

No numpad version? Then I cant even consider it as I use a numpad daily. I really wish there were more decent full size custom options

It's cool for sure but the main reason I buy Ducky products is to avoid having to build it myself. I'm at the point where I enjoy high-end keyboards for gaming but don't want to 1) build it myself or 2) take out a second mortgage to pay for my keyboard - Ducky always filled that gap perfectly for me. If I have to build this one, I'd have to consider other options too and I'm not sure my free time can handle another hobby 😅

Uh yeah my 10 year old Ducky Mini looks and sounds better than this at $100. You should get a discount for assembling it yourself, not pay extra
