  • Figured that this weekend would be a good time to start assembling the LI. For the most part everything went together smoothly except for the valve covers which I should have held up when the jug went down. See the rest of the rebuild in part 2 which will be up tomorrow.

looking good. it is good to see our services going to good use. for your valve cover gasket there are gaskets that go on both sides of that top washer that goes on the jug. if i remember right their should have been a gasket for the bottom of the valve cover in your gasket kit as well. with no gasket on the top of the valve cover you may get a small leak there.

Thanks for this helpful video. I got my 1959 gravely running only to blow the head gasket while trying it out on a brush patch in the garden. It ran great but it was puffing smoke out of its forehead where the one of the bolt goes through the gasket. You could see bits of gasket missing there. Then suddenly it began shooting sparks--like when you hold some steel to a grinding wheel--but the motor still sounded fine. I figured it was just exhaust escaping through the hole in the gasket. Then it slowed, stopped and I couldn't start it. I hope it was only the head gasket. I expect I am gonna be sending the jug out.
