I remember buying this album when I was in third grade. I would go to my friends and talk about how awesome it was and they would just give me a blank stare and tell me my taste in music sucked. I can't believe that was 21 years ago.
This would be such a perfect setting to see this band. A slight chill in the air, a light rain which is probably giving the air a crisp scent, doubled with the atmosphere provided by cynic which is just amazing. I saw them live in an old theater though, which was pretty cool as well.
My Focus' favourite track. Too bad the growlings are pre-recorded, but the live show is instrumentally perfect. Thanks for this! Top class Paul and Sein.
Masvidal is so relaxed...it's like he's on tranqs or something. And then he blasts out a solo and you're like O_O HOLY HELL. This band is amazing, I can't wait to see them live.
Got to see them in Washington D.C. on Sunday the 8th of Aug. Had never seen them before and they were great. Very small place and they hung out after the show with the fans. Really, really cool guys!!! My buddies can die now. HAHAHA
I'm so glad they're back! Saw them with BtBaM in Florida. I was mesmerized the entire time they played that I snapped out of this trance I was in as soon as the last chord was hit. I don't remember much but a few riffs from them that show, but I know it must have been awesome to have put me in a trance like that lol
@misanthrope8811 I think you nailed it. I was there for that show. I was smiling the whole time and couldn't get enough of "staring" at them. Incredible live! I'm anxious to see them perform again.
I really wish Paul all the best with the current version of Cynic, and I'm sure the new drummer is a beast -- but without Sean I don't know if I'll ever be able to bring myself to listen to them...
I'll miss Malone's creamy and staccato fretless bass lines. I cannot believe both Sean's are gone. It's awful. But personally, I'll hear them out, the new line-up. Paul is a great composer.
Although, I'm not sure Cynic should still be a band name they use. To me that makes zero sense..it's like if Rush hired a new drummer and still called themselves Rush. No can do.
Even though they did it after John Rutsey...lol..will I ever stop commenting? Time will tell LMAO! (a light chuckly, actually.) Not even a light chuckle. A mere mental note of what a chuckle should be.
@@joelalexander4513 Yeah, that's kind of what I mean. For me Cynic was Sean and Paul (and Sean, but I don't know the intricacies of his status in the band over time), and it just seems weird to me without Reinert. Of course, I mean this as my personal issue, not as a reproach towards Paul. I have no right to judge what he's doing, because I don't know the personal histories between them. He is definitely a unique musical voice and I wish him all the best.
I personally appreciate smaller crowds that are more mature in just even listening to the in-depth music compositions of Cynic... By far an interesting come back (discard the lame technical problems...) They are pure intellectual.
its almost 1700 miles away from my place they got a great guitar player who does the growls now , his name is tymon , hes from a cool band called exivious. btw your so lucky to see them back in the day
How many guys from the original line up are here? when I was in junior high I remember being so into their album focus and listening to the death albums that had members of this group on..great to see some incarnation of them is playing.
I heard that the reason the crowd was so small for this gig was because of a storm they had the day previous and no one really knew if the fest was still on. And yeah they need to tour the US! Cant wait for the new record!
Haha. I love the one guy in the camo shirt who's totally into it and air-guitaring and all the people who are around him are standing still. Gods, wanna see these guys live now. Surprisingly small crowd... but that's coo' though.
Well they went on tour on short notice apparently, i'm just glad they're back. I don't mind waiting a year or two before their live performance is fully up and running.
This video gives the idea that stage performance isnt just music. You can play great music, and make no mistakes, but it's not enough to do a great show. however, nice song, i like it :)
@Pactoren They were pre-recorded for this show. The band member who did it on the album in 1993 chose not to do the reunion tour. They've since added another member who does them
Now I regret not going to their concert when they were here... Back then, I thought "this is just allright" but later Cynic became one of my biggest favourites.
@jsteele07189 They actually did have live vocals during the most recent tour, it was with a different line-up than in this video. Sadly, the most current line up is broken (again) due to the two members Robin and Tymon (Bass & Guitar/Vocals) living in the Netherlands
cool, I don't know how far that is, but I seen them a few times back in 94 in florida, and I've been a big fan ever since... saw them twice open up for Canibal corpse, i'd like to see someone do the growls still...
@NaughtyDogRex paul is singing the lead robot vocals and the growling vocals seemed to be played as samples since the guy who originally did them left cynic back when they broke up
i sawww em at el rey theater & the crowd was very similar to this .. just standing around .. my theory is they understand that this is so mind blowing that you should just stare :]
Shame the crowd was so small... These guys deserve a way bigger audience.
good thing was that they enjoyed the performance.
Understandably so, Cynic was a really controversial band, and this was their first gig after a 13 year hiatus.
In the recent Latin America tour, their audiences were way bigger. Glad they're getting the recognition they deserve!
Rip Sean. Will be in our hearts forever
Rest in peace Sean, you were one of the greatest ever!
Definitely . Sean reinert was so technical yet was able to play heavy metal beats with the best of them
@@joelfox6695 Judging by the timing of this comment maybe they meant Malone too, since both are dead now...
@@KytexEditsMalone wasn't in this live video
@@KytexEditsscratch that maybe he was lol
traveled all the way from baghdad to istanbul to see them , and i had the best 40 minutes in my whole life!
one of the best metal solos of all time
not a very good execution that evening
its just so sad that not that many people were there these guys are wicked talented and deserve a bigger audience

TheHugsvilleHorror 3rd grade?....liar

Soldier on, friend.
I love how calm he is.
its a shame ...

IS that Paul Masvidal from Death? I recognize headless guiar!
Yes, he played on human!
They're all such great musicians.
Ive seen em live, worth it man
and paul signed my ticket and i took a picture with him :)
Reinert is such a fucking beast.

Such a revolutionary band.
Awesome, I've heard people talking about this band but never gave them a chance, awesome music
:O
This song is the perfect mix of beautiful and brutal.
The crowd size isn’t about anything! It’s the music and the energy of love
that guy in the green camo stole them the whole show ;)
Awesome band, highly underrated.

awsome performance
Caught them when opening for Death back in NJ... excellent show!
how could i forget such a revelation
to love without fear and learn without question
cool song and cool lyrics.

beautiful music
The best band i have ever seen live.
y is there barely anyone there? this is genius, there should be more people watching
Wow, I can't believe that's the only people to show up! This band is skilled up the ass, and no one went to go see them.
I'm so glad they're back! Saw them with BtBaM in Florida. I was mesmerized the entire time they played that I snapped out of this trance I was in as soon as the last chord was hit. Beautiful, awesome music/musicians. So glad about their reunion. Cynic, Cynic, Cynic.....!
dude from 2:25-2:29 did an air drum to air guitar, to air drum fill Ultra combo dance!!!!
all he needed was to end it with the Abbath Dance
no habia nadie ahi... Xd... una banda tan unica como cynic merece un mejor y mas numeroso publico...
that solo is just, the best damn solo i´ve ever heard!

omg those few ppl are lucky to be there >.<
@glacier2win The vocal unit Paul uses has a vocoder but also harmonies, reverb, distortion, doubling, etc. It's called a TC Helicon VoiceLive 2.

This song is MASTERPIECE !!! Promo 2008 also rox as HELL. Paul Masvidal is such a great person. He knows what good music should be like !!
can you imagine, paul wrote these songs when he was about 18
i know, like i would give anything to see them like this
woah, what a small crowed, and what a huge stage in comparison....

Their playing "Focus" in it's entirety in their first U.S.(reformed) show!! Just bought me ticket
Their drummer kicks ass!
I met him too ! :)
nice guy
love this song. Cynic rules foreva!!!
Please, Gods of Music and Metal, let Cynic come to Chile this coming March.
It's cool because he actually speaks to the crowd like a normal person and he doesn't believe that he is a dark over-lord or something.

COME TO CROATIA!
There should be way more people that listen to Cynic.
they got the crowd they deserve eventually, when i saw them on their tour with meshuggah the crowd was so packed it was almost impossible to get close
that solo is perfect!!!!! not album perfect, but just sounds so damn awesome!!!! perfect sound!!
2:26 - True fan.
amazing album closer:)
this was awesome back when i saw them at rock city(Nov 22nd,2008)-support for opeth.
what a sin that so few people. killer band
I think the recording is of a guy called Tony Teegarden, who, if i'm not mistaken sang on the original 'Focus' album.

I cant believe how good that sounds live, and in 2007
real band hail cy
Why there's not so many people?
Is very strange being Norway such a metal country :S
both cynic's albums kick ass!!
fucking amazing
Paul is doing those growls with his mind!
The final solo makes me crying... and this version is much more better than the original/2004 remix.
Cynic---->my idols.
@Akira3441 Nice, Norway is a really nice place. Here in Brazil, most people don't understand english, even with this being teached in the schools.
grandissimi cynic!!
