Every bassist will agree: this is is extremely simple and barebones, besides the pre chorus and some twists, but DAMN is it fun to play.

I don't, There are plenty of simple yet creative bass parts even in punk rock, but this is just stale, boring and lifeless.

@@89kilemal Nothing, especially since it's a Metallica song. I was just talking about the bass alone.

@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 well, if you're actually a good bass player you know you don't need to stick to the tabs when playing the song, you can very easily spice it up yourself, or do a different twist of it, when playing alone or in a band. But I guess it's easier to just talk

At least that's what I do with 95% of the songs I find stale, boring or lifeless while playing

This is why a lot of bassist like the black album and Jason newsted this is clearly something every bassist trying to play it may seem simple but the creative way the rithum falls into the groove is difficult if you don't practice 😊

Believe it or not, there is also a fricken synthesizer in this song. Bob insisted but James and Lars made him bury it so far in the mix, you can barely notice it.

I always admired the midrange deep growl you get on bass, when you have both pickups rolled up, just like here. But what frustrates me is that this growl is only on E string, and other strings sound much brighter, even A string is already much less growly. Even on this track, when Jason played this: 2:17 A D and G strings sound very thin, and later A string is much weaker and less powerful.
I’ve noticed this problem on basically every bass with two pickups. Even Rickenbackers with pickups placed closer to the neck don’t have more growl

That bass wasn't even set up right. Listen to 2:18. Crazy fret buzz. It's this really the bass or is it a rockband re-recording for the videogame?

    • @Patrick-857

He's hitting really hard. I notice in a lot of modern metal, the bass has a lot of clatter in it. This isn't even that bad.
Edit: I have been watching your UA-cam channel for years, and I like your videos. On this one, I'm inclined to disagree. I've listened to a lot of isolated bass tracks, and they almost always sound bad, especially in the heavy genres. I'd be interested to see what happens when it's playing with the drums, because Jason Newstead is no slouch with the groove.

It may sound bad in isolation but this kind of tone helps cut through the mix

I went back and listened to the song. I can suddenly hear that quacking midrange in the bass underneath the guitars. Pretty sure this is the real deal. It sounds the same to me, and that tone and playing would be virtually impossible to copy exactly.

Beating the frack out of your bass is widely known as the best way to get a good metal bass tone.
