I'm a 1991 baby, and can I just say, this is REAL music. I'm entirely jealous of those of you who lived through the Golden Age of British and American pop-culture. This track is just one of many that easily represents how much better music was than it is right now. I love the 70s and the 80s, and nothing comes even close today to comparing. Thank you for this quality music. I'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion with my own generation, but I don't mind-- y'all truly did have better music. Cheers!
@@garethbowen9894 It appears that Rev Kim Lesley is still singing - ua-cam.com/video/Qe6KqCzq7Yw/v-deo.html . According to Wikipedia Maz Roberts married Pino Palladino in 1992. His webpage only states that their three children are involved in the music business.
As a 28 year old, I wish I could use some time turner to go back and experience this performance live. 😭😭😭 I love love this song so much 😍😍😍 and I also love Paul Young, he seems to be such a sweet man. 🤗
The second half of 1983 into 1984 had the best of all top of the pops sets. The lighting is really good and there is so much of it. The whole performance is so memorable. I remember this when it was first broadcast and then I would have been seven.
The post 70s era of TOTP produced by the onomatopoeic Michael Hurll was utterly dreadful, with its fake "party" atmosphere of professional audience members with their party hats, balloons and party horns, like the worst Christmas party ever. He ruined several potentially classic performances. The 70s, with its natural, often sullen audience, seemed relatively authentic. 80s TOTP, like the era itself, was utterly fake. The only highlight was occasional presenter John Peel relentlessly taking the piss out of it.
Smiles from the heart of a family man, mama's goin to love.. as much as she can, & she can...daddy's goin to buy you a dream to cling to...living on a dream ain't easy...faith is the new foundation, but don't forget to pray. 💙
With respect, there are quite a few "pop shows" from many countries (esp in Europe), where lip syncing was "performed" - it was mainly for the "promotion" of singles though. However, some bands refused to lip sync and would perform a "live" version. Also, some artists would sing live to a backing track and so did not need band members on stage.
Time is slower in the south seas..and as a 90's child in the south pacific, this is the music I grew up listening to on the national broadcaster..riding along with mum and dad in our "old bomb" Nissan..
I bought this record when it came out because of the backup singers. They are sensational. Paul does a great job but I would love to hear those girls cut loose. When I play it I listen to them more than him. Great work ladies.
Might I recommend that you seek out The Piranhas performance of 'Zambesi' on Top of the Pops. It is available on this website. They provided backing vocals for that record also. I hope this is of interest.
Happy days with family at Christmas 🎄 wish they were still here 🥲 making memories without even realising it at the time! You all enjoy your happy times with your family while you can guys❤️
i honestly think this is one of the nicest songs and lyrics i know, and, i'm a metalhead so i normally woud never say that from other styles of music... :) great song, great voice

Well the music today is not in no way shape or form as good or meaning full as the 60s 70s 80s . i do miss watching this on a saturday night
Get where you are coming from but there would be a major ingredient missing.
The pure brilliance of the 60s 70s and 80s.
Look to the song. Written as a folk song in 1967. It was performed brilliantly.

Tears from your little sister
Crying because she doesn't have

But you know she'll get by
'Cause she's living in
The love of the common people
Smiles from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
And she can
It's a good thing
You don't have a bus fare
It would fall through the hole
In your pocket and you'd lose it
In the snow on the ground
You got to walk into town
To find a job
Tryin' to keep your hands warm
When the hole in your shoe
Let the snow come through
And chill you to the bone
Somehow you'd better go home
Where it's warm
Where…
