Thanks for the video! You hit the nail on the head when explaining the Dobyns balance and how they feel lighter because of it. I have rods that are lighter on the scales than some of my Dobyns, but in the hand it's a different story, the Dobyns feel lighter when the others have too much weight distributed towards the tip. It also makes a big difference is sensitivity.
Correct. Balance is everything, well maybe sensitivity but yet again the lighter rod has likely more sensitivity. I have a few Edge rods and are not the lightest but fish light because of better balance. I also have the new 7' 2020 Legend Xtreme and compared to my Legend Elite feels lighter but in truth is not BUT the balance point is over 3" further back!! Balance points are getting more important because reels are getting lighter. QUESTION. The Expride and Legend X both weighed the same. How does their balance compare? Awesome review and thanks! Would be fun to weigh the tips on your scale?
I think the extra bulk & weight of the Xtreme's "skin" handles help the balance. I had a previous generation Xtreme (the blue ones) and it was also well balanced.. for St Croix.
@@PunchFishing The new 7 foot 2020 Xtreme balance point with the AGS guides has a balance point of only 4" to center of rod foot. With the new 2020 Metanium the balance point is touching the reel.
I have three 7M rods and it seems the cheaper the lighter in my case: 1) Daiwa Tatula XT 7M (MSRP $99) and it comes at 3.4 oz. Fishes VERY well and I have pair it with a light Okuma RTX reel which 6.6 oz and my daughter use it all day without getting too tired. 2) My expride 7m is at 3.75oz so good weight tolerance there in compression with yours. 3) My Dobyns Champ Extreme HP which has the highest MSRP is at 4.75 oz but its rated higher for both line and lure weight. I feel this rod is more MH and I use it accordingly. Keep up the great videos!
I know it didn’t exist when the video was made, but for $180.00, the St Croix Victory VTS610MLXF drop shot rod weighs in at 3.1 oz. I’ve used it all season this year & caught a bunch of fish on it. I highly recommend it.
Hey Hello, I fish a lot with the drop shot at 85 feet with 2.5 inc lures and with 3/8 drop shot lead. which rod from st croix or any other good brand is the best? Must be a 2 piece fishing rod. I look forward to your reaction.
Interesting factoid about weights. My brand new Levante EMTF arrived today along with lightly used 7’6” St Croix Legend Elite Medium Fast spinning. The EMTF is a 7’5” medium with medium fast action. The St Croix came in at 4.0 ounces while the Levante at 4.6 ounces. Using you method of testing action, the St Croix had a much softer action compared to the EMTF despite the EMTF being designed for treble hook applications. Bought them both from American Legacy Fishing. They have a trade in program so you can sometimes find noteworthy used rods. The product pics show the serial number and with St Croix, you can decipher the manufacture date from it. So this rod was less than a year old.
Great stuff Brian. Love the topic. Creates interesting discussions. I was surprised at the Dobyns weights, as I have six Dobyns in my lineup, all Champ Xtr HPs, and your point about balance is a good one as it seems like no matter what reel I put on the Dobyns, they marry well from a balance standpoint and fish/feel much lighter than they weigh. Looking forward to your reviews of the Conquest and Orochi XX spinning to see if they are 1) worth the money and 2) if you have found your perfect drop shot rod. Thanks for the video and look forward to future content.
I currently have a Daiwa tatula 7'3 M XF paired on a Shimano stradic ci4 2500, primarily a shaky head setup, not liking the rod, looking at getting a Megabass Orochi 7" shaky head rod, thoughts?

Not sure how I missed this video. But I honestly sold my NRX 822DSR after using the MB WhipSnake. Lol. The accuracy of the MB is just way superior for casting and also the parabolic bend is way better. I haven’t missed lost a single bass on Drop shotting yet.

the first dobyns rod you weighed was 7.3in so you cant count that with the 7 footers..overall weight of a rod is basically irevelant..its a balanced rod with the correct reel weight that allows comfortable fishing all day with no arm fatique..nice video
So is the daiwa tatula rod the black one is it sensitive like it should be a $300 or 400 rod .?im thinking of getting it but idk if I should spend that I have a $250 limit or is it worth getting shimano or what if that makes any sense lol
The Tatula is not as crisp and sensitive as rods higher than it's price point, BUT for around 130$ it's a heck of a rod line. I have a full review of the Tatula rod in my video history.
Nice vid, yea I’m a daiwa and dobyns rod fan but recently switched to just dobyns because of they warranty one of the best out there I recently broke the tip of my daiwa I had to ship the whole rod to them and the receipt luckily I had a rod box already or it would have cost me over 50$ to ship.. with Dobyns all you have to do is mail then the section that tells you the length and power so like 5$ and a flat rate of depending on the I have mainly champions so 60$ for a brand new rod no receipt necessary 🤷🏻♂️
I have a few decent rods and setups. I go out with my 4 year old son fishing the pond in my backyard, I throw my 270 dollar shimano rod around, but I always end up having to help my son cast his 10 dollar Mickey mouse rod. After 20 min he is done and throwing rocks, but I seem to still use his little cheap rod and catch more bass on it then I do my 600 dollar setup. Goes to show $$ gear doesn't make fish bite. They're not a whole lot lighter than the Extremes. They have more Kevlar wrapping on them and AAAA full cork handles. They do feel light in hand though like he explained about Dobyns rods and I don't think there is a better looking rod. The blanks on them are crazy skinny, but powerful. Hey dude, do you have the Orochi 7' "Shakeyhead" rod? If so, can it actually throw 1/8oz baits as the rating would suggest? I'm looking into getting a rod that's a step up from what I'm used to($130-$200 rods). I would just get something that's like 7'6" but I want to be able to throw nose hooked flukes and other small baits that require rod twitches as well as steady retrieve baits.
