I think switching to braid is the best dollar per sensitivity item anyone can buy. The no stretch gives more feedback and you can lower a rod to a lighter power due to this.
The thing is, people who use braid don't realize one important factor. If there is ANY slack when fishing braid, it is a dead limp with no sensitivity.
@@PunchFishing nailed it loud and clear, I actually think this is one of your better videos. Love hearing your breakdowns of rods, but I would be interested in more like this too.
Just to complete the previous comment. I fish under adverse conditions, with strong currents with huge tides, deep places and windy conditions. Sensitivity is everything in this type of fishing! Once again, congratulations for the channel!!
As an engineering/physics guy, sensitivity definitely is a physical characteristic that can be measured. It’s the capability of the rod and line to transmit forces and vibrations felt by your bait to your brain. The line (braid is the single easiest and biggest sensitivity upgrade), and the way your brain is tuned or used to what you’re feeling are massive parts of that equation that probably dwarf the importance of the rod. But the weight of the rod and the vibration transmission characteristics also definitely play a role and can be measured. Resonant frequencies of different carbon mixes and layerings, or guide insert materials, rod action dampening and smoothing force transmission... it’s all an interesting puzzle I’d love to do some real research on
I love high end gear and this is arguably the most honest and accurate video on UA-cam. Ott Defoe and, like you mentioned, Edwin Evers fish crankbaits on Bass Pro’s $70ish crankin stick and consistently win tournaments at the highest level.
@@ICYPROFITS they don’t fish crankbaits on those rods. They fish other techniques with them. When they fish cranks they use the $70ish BPS crankin sticks. Watch any tournament footage of them fishing crankbaits.
For me it's the most important aspect of a fishing rod. My fishing trips are with very light jig heads. I need to have a precise contact with the bottom of the mangroves and their structures... Make more videos on other topics about fishing rods! I'm a big fan of your work!
This is the best advise I have run across on You Tube. :) Case in point In 2013, I bought into the hype of the GLX crankbait rods. I loved the fit, finish and the handle on them. The problem with them, the sensitivity was not there. Every fish I caught on them, I did not detect the bite at all. It was more, hey! I got a fish! Didn't feel one strike at all. It was a big waste of money. I could have bought a Bass Pro Crankin Stick and had been happier and saved a ton of money.
thank you, what you said about not listening to someone that has not used the whole spectrum, makes a lot of sense. i think adding in what tactical bassing said is useful. spend the most on your lightest outfit (you may catch a huge fish an do not want it to fail) and the heaviest (you will feel the weight after repeated casting an are paying for lightness)
Great video! I totally agree, sensitivity is mostly muscle memory, you may get more reassurance from higher end gear but ultimately your brain needs to learn the difference between rocks, milfoil, grass and a fish. As I get up in years, I've decided to started to finally upgrade my gear to a higher quality price point because: 1) I can afford it now 2) The lighter gear is less taxing on my older body. But I'd say #2 is more important. The less fatigued I feel after a day of casting cranks or bladed baits the better. Thanks for the content.

You nailed this video. I totally understood what you were driving at. You made a really good point too about the pros and what they actually use in tournaments. You took all of the marketing out of the equation and simplified it really well. Great video!
I buy mid-high end rods to look at and hold as much as fish. My ark reinforcers with jdm ballistics bring me so much joy, but my favorite rod til I break it is an older fenwick aetos med/moderate that I got for under 100 on amazon when fenwick still made amazing rods.
i have found sometimes using a lower end rods make you concentrate more and that really helps with your overall results . i also think braid is the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to sensitivity.have fished high end vs low end rods against each other do not think there is all that much difference there is the point of deminashing returns on your investment. thanks for sharing love that you are honest and just giving your opinion keep up the good work.
I agree 100%. I think its important to make sure you are using the right equipment for the lure, technique, weight and depth. Which is exactly why Kevin Van Dam uses his $100 rods and reels and is still arguably the best angler in the world.
I took the step up from my ugly stik's this year and completely agree with you. Got a St Croix Legend Elite and a Victory along with a couple Orochii XX's now all spinning. I can say the few times I've gotten to fish with the Elite it felt like I was feeling everything on the bottom most likely because of what I came from fishing.
For me personally rods in the 125 range has enough sensitivity for most of the fishing I do when compared to the 250 range. They work just fine. What I do find to be superior about the higher end is that overall feel, weight and balance. The responsiveness of the blank when working the lure or fighting the fish.. I do however enjoy the crispness of the action in higher end rods. Good video man
Great video dear friend. I could sense your sincerity in all you have said. You cleared all the questions arising from brain storming in my mind concerning the criteria used in measuring the sensitivity of fishing rods. I have always settled for the position, that it is all a function of psychology and physical experience in form of " placebo effect " in medicine. The psychogical experience will certainly vary from person to person but manufacturers and salesmen will do anything to marry positive experience with the use of their products for enhanced sales and profit. Thanks for your exposition which confirms my beliefs absolutely. I fully subscribe.👍👍
Matt Robertson is a prime example that high end rods don't really stop you from going pro. He uses Ugly Sticks and made it pro. That says a lot. I enjoy the channel showed up in my suggested videos I think because I Google searched a Daiwa Steez the other day
Obviously I wouldn’t want to have a high-end rod feel washed out like the P5 Dark Sleeper, but I agree with you sensitivity isn’t the #1 factor for a rod. For me it’s versatility. First P5 I bought was the Super Destroyer because it can do so many things. It’s a moderate fast, so it’s not like an X-bites but it’s still incredibly good. Not good at flukes though because the rod shakes a lot when you’re ripping the bait. Most carbon rods are sensitive
Really enjoyed your perspective on this and had similar thoughts. If the pros on tour don’t feel the need for the advantages of top tier rods when they’re rolling with thousands of dollars worth of electronics and other equipment then it should show that maximizing sensitivity is not crucial to catching the most fish.
Fully agree. Also, they have enough experience and have a dense "mental catalog" of things that are on the bottom of a lake. They can interpret that information better than the average angler.
grat point about experience on the water translating to perceiving sensitivity. I am surprised that you didnt bring up the point of technique dictating the need for sensitivity, you can certainly benefit from a higher end more sensitive rod for botto contact vs a cranking rod where regardless of price point you arent going to get the most feedback to your hand and you also don't need it anyway. great video!
Thanks for saving me from going down the "fishing rod sensitivity" rabbit hole lol. Luckily, your video was like the third one I found on the subject. I just found your channel and I'm wondering if you have a video where you compare rods at different price points? Or the best rods at certain price point? I'm looking to get a new rod specifically for Texas Rigging and my budget is around $100-$120. I fish as a hobby so obviosuly I wouldn't expect the latest and greatest for that price point, but I'm looking for the best value rod I can get
That, in my opinion was spot on. I’ve recently purchased a couple of GLX casting rods. Is the sensitivity good? Yeah it’s great but when I start comparing them to my Zodias and Avid X’s I don’t think the cost difference is justified..to me anyways. I was kind of surprised at just how sensitive all my other cheaper rods felt. I’ll keep my 2 GLX rods but I really doubt I’ll be forking out that kind of dough anymore
Completely agree, feel my zodias is plenty sensitive compared to my glx and poison adrena.I feel like weight of the rod should be put above sensitivity, which is why I’ll never understand megabass rods other than p5s
Can you tell me a little about how durable the megabass Evoluzion is? Are they worth the money? And should I buy one or buy a conquest rather than one of these, your opinion is greatly valuable to me.
Recently got a GLX, more sensitive than Expride for sure but not by much. It not going to be mind blown sensitive. It just a little more sensitive. I can still feel rock, bottom, grass, etc on both and still get the same amount of bite.
To me a high dollar rod is not always gonna solve all the problems when it's who is using it that needs to make corrections. I have lost big fish over 6 on my GLX cause I didn't do a proper hook set when i detected a bite or the fish ran off with the bait. I let the fish jump. I can't blame the rod for that. I think hook set ablilty, backbone ,right amount of flex, balance , weight, durability, grip comfort are also big factors on rods.
If you have never used a Duckett Micro Magic I highly recommend you try one out. There honestly a great rod imo for $150. If I ever decide to unleash my JDM Megabass, Steez collection that’s exactly what I’m going back to, will be a full lineup of Micro Magics. There not for everyone do to the insane small guides but I love them honestly. The Black Ice lineup is also killer but honestly there priced about $100 to much.
I would think you could put something like a seismograph at the handle on a fishing rod and pull the line out like as far as it can throw and lightly touch it with brush or whatever and see what it reads. Idk maybe you could do this to test sensitivity....
Honestly I think I needed to hear this. I’ve gone up and down the spectrum, but haven’t broached the $400 price point yet. I’ve been trying to figure out if I really want to wait for ages to afford the NRX or just get the Victory “cover band” model for fishing deep in the reservoir I tend to hit. As you say, that may be an area where the sensitivity matters more than others but it’s not life changing. Willing to bet the Victory will balance better with the stradic I have in mind for it too.
Totally agree. And you don't have to be a pro to be able to talk intelligently about a topic like sensitivity. As you say, Edwin Evers proves that point every time he takes the water fishing Bass Pro branded rods and reels. Same is true for every pro sponsored by Lew's. Sensitivity is completely subjective, period, end of story. Great video.
Here’s my exsample of what extreme sensitivity is verses the normal sensitivity of oh that’s rocks or shells or that’s a stump… for the Nrx+ rods I literally feel like I am rubbing my hand across what ever my bait is touching for instance little pea gravel of rock bottom in a lake… I feel like I’m running my hand directly on it.. and that goes for anything underwater… for me it can not be replicated yes their is a few exceptions like the expride series rods… I believe they are super close to my nrx rods and are under valued for what you get however… nrx rods just have the upper hand for me… unbelievable rods…
The fishing industry as a whole is full of marketing hype. Ie super Digi gear vs micro module gears, ci4+ vs zaion carbon, etc. I have tried many different rod and reels over the last decade or so, and completely agree with your video comments. I have learned that comfort , overall feel, and the correct power and action is what matters most. All if which comes down to personal preference. For me, a comfortable rod is a more sensitive rod. The right action and power for the technique being used is equally important. Line choice is a huge factor as well. I settled on BPS Carbonlite 2.0 rods, Fenwick HMG and elite Tech rods as being the best fit for me and my style/preference . Shimano Stradic FL and SLX MGL 70/ Curado MGL 70 hit the sweet spot of smoothness, durability, feel, and price. Some products like the okuma hakai reels seem to be offering some new innovative designs that look interesting. But most of the stuff out there is marketing 101 and we all fall for it :) it's always fun to play with a shiny new toy
Well said about guys like Wheeler and Evers. Most of the bits I get would be felt on a $100 rod or a $700 conquest. For me the only time the high end rod will help is in the winter fishing for smallmouth in deep water with a ned rig or drop shot.
I love my 852S NRX, but still don’t think it’s even justifiable if paying full price. IMO anything over $300 is just for shits and giggles after that. The rod industry has gotten so good at building rods, they’re all good stuff. Even the carbonlites at $100. It’s a bad ass rod
It’s NOT important when you’re Buying.....it’s important when FISHING. 🎣😬 My few hours fishing the X-Bites I experienced a higher sensitivity, i Really felt the leader tensioning when fishing a JIG. It was NO guesswork anymore when the line went thight, it became detectable. BUT Yes, it is ALL based on experience from the PAST. ALSO sometimes SMALL changes make a BIGGER difference 🤔✌️ Tackle NERDS 💪🇯🇵👍 🙌🙌🙌 👏😋 I ❤️ JDM
I use a Falcon t7 Amistad for jig fishing and I'm satisfied with its sensitivity. However, a friend of mine uses the Evoluzion Super Diablo and says it is another world, both for sensitivity and for its parabolic action. Do you think it can be like this? Do you think it is worth spending so much money?
Bass fishermen do not need sensitivity for crank baits. Worms, yes. Fishermen who are trolling do not sensitivity because they are not even holding the rod. Fishermen who are jigging need sensitivity. You have made this quite a bit more complex than needed. Rod length, water depth, rod action, and type of line all affect sensitivity.
Oh and sensitivity can be measured… with a frequency meter.. it measures hertz…gravitational constant 1g = 9.81 m/s objects can be measured in two frequencies free vibration and forced vibration. Free vibration would be the lure rubbing the ground or bottom , force vibration would obviously be the fish biting.. all this can be measured using accelerometers 😅 also you can measure rods by displacement, velocity or acceleration. Vibration displacement is always measured as Peak to Peak, a measure of the total excursion of the rotor or machine casing in MILS or MICROMETERS. Vibration velocity and Acceleration are measured as Zero to Peak or RMS. Basically you could measure rods vs rods by there peak measurements… however who in their right mind would do this lmao 😂
I figure professionals are using cheap rods because those are the ones their sponsors have the highest profit margins on. And the “pros” are just salesmen.
spot on with moving down in quality.....but you need the high end to learn the feels.. personally my smallie rod is an NRX but it made my lower rods feel better
I fished mono and glass when I started bass fishing, learn to watch your line. An Ugly Stick and braid will get you to NRX "sensitivity". It's marketing, Loomis will advertise an NRX bass rod as sensitive, and an NRX fly rod as a casting machine, because they are aiming at the buyer with their claims.
It's a strong bias to have to cut through. If I have a Destroyer in hand, I've put out a lot more coin, and it looks better, so I am heavily biased to want it to perform better. I'd love to see a rod builder take a number of blanks from every price point and build them out with all the same components, and then have folks use them, and grade their performance. Two more things to consider. You'd think all enthusiast level rods would have done away with cork and hypalon by now, and opted for more sensitive handle material, and two touring pros use pretty mediocre equipment 'most' of the time compared to enthusiast level stuff, because obviously they are getting paid, but they are getting it done.
I get you but no an ugly stick will not feel like a high end roads sensitivity They are two completely different mediums Think of it like listen to music via Spotify, radio and record player All different mediums that have their own vibe I use mono on fibreglass rods because I'm usually bait fishing, I don't need to feel every little rock and so on, I just want the fish to take the boat, swim and then me set the hook
n my experience i noticed that rods over a certain quality are hard to measure in terms of ''sensitivity'', the sensitivity is more evident between a budget rod and expensive rod, it's hard to say if is better a Legend Extreme or a P5 or a NRX, because this rods have an elevate % of carbon and are in very high modulus, but if you compare they to a 100$ rod you notice the difference. In scientifics terms, sensitivity is tied up to the ''Tensile Modulus'' in relation how much % of the resin the rod have, but it's not the only parameter for a rod, it's depend what you need, because for example for some kind of approach like the Tuna Fishing the ''Tensile Strenght'' is much more significant than ''tensile modulus''
I think switching to braid is the best dollar per sensitivity item anyone can buy. The no stretch gives more feedback and you can lower a rod to a lighter power due to this.

Well said about guys like Wheeler and Evers. Most of the bits I get would be felt on a $100 rod or a $700 conquest. For me the only time the high end rod will help is in the winter fishing for smallmouth in deep water with a ned rig or drop shot.
Agree 10000000%
agree 100% anything above tatula bass rods in daiwa and avid in st croix has a diminishing value for the money
Mmmm not sure if I fully agree. It's not so black and white.
I love my 852S NRX, but still don’t think it’s even justifiable if paying full price. IMO anything over $300 is just for shits and giggles after that. The rod industry has gotten so good at building rods, they’re all good stuff. Even the carbonlites at $100. It’s a bad ass rod
WARRANTY! Which rod has the best warranty? 🤔
ALSO sometimes SMALL changes make a BIGGER difference 🤔✌️
Tackle NERDS 💪🇯🇵👍 🙌🙌🙌 👏😋 I ❤️ JDM
I use a Falcon t7 Amistad for jig fishing and I'm satisfied with its sensitivity. However, a friend of mine uses the Evoluzion Super Diablo and says it is another world, both for sensitivity and for its parabolic action. Do you think it can be like this? Do you think it is worth spending so much money?
He argues that this double action is worth it.
I have that rod, and yes it's sensitive but it's definitely not worth $600.
@@PunchFishing Thanks!!
It's not a matter of what I have sensitivity for, but what the fish are sensitive to like dynamite for example.
I would be terrified to see inside your "Mental Rolodex" LOL
It's a dark and terrifying place.
Sensitivity is subjective based on the personal touch of each person.
Well damn, anyone want to trade 2 NRX+ for 2 Ugly Sticks?
I wish I would have seen this video a few months ago.
I agree that a high end rod wont necessarily make you a better fisherman, but I KNOW that high end reel WILL lol
Fair point!
Setting up a test that measures vibrations at the grip using modern testing equiptment does not exactly sound impossible....
Who's got a lab??
@@PunchFishing multi million dollar rod companies
@@PunchFishing I think within the industry... testing has no standards, so companies keep testing procedure to themselves.
Sounds like you have trained and developed your skill level
You can always see people with top tier rods fishing slack PE for weightless baits, sensitivity in the ownership.lol
spot on with moving down in quality.....but you need the high end to learn the feels.. personally my smallie rod is an NRX but it made my lower rods feel better
Interesting. I would say to just buy what you can afford.
Watch your line and you'll see the bite before you feel it.
Fish doesn’t know what rod or reel we use .. it doesn’t matter - It is only our mind ;)
I’ve always been curious about the diminishing returns in regards to sensitivity you get after a certain price point
It is interesting, because some models of high end rods are better than others in the sensitivity department.
I'm going to politely disagree
I get you but no an ugly stick will not feel like a high end roads sensitivity
They are two completely different mediums
Think of it like listen to music via Spotify, radio and record player
All different mediums that have their own vibe
I use mono on fibreglass rods because I'm usually bait fishing, I don't need to feel every little rock and so on, I just want the fish to take the boat, swim and then me set the hook
n my experience i noticed that rods over a certain quality are hard to measure in terms of ''sensitivity'', the sensitivity is more evident between a budget rod and expensive rod, it's hard to say if is better a Legend Extreme or a P5 or a NRX, because this rods have an elevate % of carbon and are in very high modulus, but if you compare they to a 100$ rod you notice the difference.
