Picked up my first Legend X a few weeks ago, solely on your thorough review. I am not disappointed. Thanks for the stellar job!
Thanks! They are fun rods. They just won win any beauty contests.
I really enjoy and appreciate your channel. Keep it up! I’m a gear nerd but have been sheltered in the Dobyns & expride lifestyle for 7 years. It’s a good life but you have recommended rods that I now LOVE. Thank you.
I finaly bought the St-Croix legend X medium ex-fast 6"10 and with my Aldebaran MGL it is fantastik .... great with small 1/8 and 1/4 ounce jigs and small 3inch and 4 inch swimbait and 1/8 spinnerbait....nice tip and super sensitive
I really appreciate your informative videos. Omnia just got this rod back in stock and I used your code to pick one up. I can't wait to slay some bass with it. Thank you!!!
thanks so much for the support!! you'll love it
Just picked one of these up on the flea. I LOVE my nrx but I feel like it doesn’t work my flukes as nicely as my extra fast mojo bass. I’m hoping this rod will be a good medium ground between the extreme feel of the nrx and the “user friendly” nature of the mojo bass series (which are KILLER rods btw...alway on deck for my reaction/topwater baits).
EDIT: it’s a great bonus to see an aldebaran for this review...that’s the fluke reel I have lined up for this rod
I’m a huge fan of my Legend X, I have the 6’ 8” spinning model and use it for drop shot. Paired with a CI4+, it’s stupid light and sensitive and I absolutely love it.
Nice to see you making videos. And I am glad I met you bro
Thanks man!
Just bought this rod per your recommendation. Found 1 on flee bay. Very difficult to find right now. What I was looking for. Thanks.
St Croix had their customer appreciation day recently as a virtual event (rather than their factory showroom) due to COVID 19. Picked up a B grade Legend X 7’0” MHF for half off MSRP. I can’t find any blemish on it.
Great pickup!
How does this 7'1" MHXF compare to the 7'0" MHF Legend X? In the LTB line that comes with labels, they call the 71MHXF the finesse/swim jig rod and the 70MHF the jig/bait rod. I'm looking for a rod that focuses on jigs/t-rigs including skipping with a wide variety of applications. I would have assumed the 70MHF would be more versatile but it looks like it might actually be the stiffer of the two rods with a higher lure rating--not sure though. Any recommendation between the two rods?
Speaking of cosmetics, St Croix’s customer appreciation day was done online this past year due to COVID. I managed to snag a B stock of this model for 30% off. That Expride I also own, snagged for 20% off on TW Black Friday sale.
Those are some good deals! Hard rods to find nowadays.
Wanted to thank you for your videos! Learned a lot of things... Keep it up and God Bless!
Appreciate it! I'm no expert, just a gear addict. If I helped anyone learn anything that's a small miracle.
Brian, Thanks for the Knowledge...I Love High End Rods...Keep up the Good Work...👍👍👍
thank you for watching
Great review. Excellent information. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Just found your channel. Are the guides on the legend X big enough for braid to leader?
Absolutely
Idk what happened to my comment from earlier. Seems like it's gone. But I came here to say that you are not wrong about the guides and the finish on the American-made rods from St. Croix. All of my Mojos have great finishes and the guides are all straight. Only one of my American-made rods from them looks like it was wrapped and finished by someone with eyes. They feel and fish great but it drives me nuts that good-looking ones seem so rare. I will probably only buy from brick-and-mortar stores going forwards so I can check them beforehand.
I was thinking about upgrading my Avid X's to LTBs because I've decided I'm not a huge fan of microguides, but are they really that badly balanced?
Wound up getting the elite version of this blank (I like full cork more) instead of the LTB for my jig/plastics rod. Happy to say that it came free of any blemishes. No scuffs in the epoxy, and the guides are laser straight. The rod feels great also. In particular, the contouring of the reel seat is amazing.
I just subbed to your channel. Your videos have help me select a couple new rods. You should a reel review too. Love your shoes also.
Hah first person to notice! Thanks.. I try to slip in some heat ;)
Brian, nice review! I've been curious about the new and very expensive Legend Extreme. I'd be getting their spinning rod, likely the 7'0" Medium - just wondered whether you've even had a chance to hold one yet. Other than Smallmouthcrush's loyalty to them, and TacticalBassin's high praise of their sensitivity, I don't see enough talk about them to get me trigger happy yet. For their cost, there's clearly a bunch to pick from.....
I have held the 7' medium legend xtreme and I was very unimpressed. It's even softer than the legend X! The thing is a noodle. St Croix really needs to get their shit together on action & power in these high end sticks. I'd tell you to 100% skip the new Xtreme spinning rods.. get a NRX, P5 or Conquest.
Thanx for the reply - I trust your opinion! I may take a shot on the Conquest if I can get a deep enough discount, otherwise Hell, I'll just get another NRX!
@@PunchFishing Brian,the 7’Medium legend x ,I think it’s soft?its right?Its my only legend x rig.
Hey man! For me, I really LOVE the color 😆 bought my first Legend X now..
I’m debating about the new 2020 Legend Xtreme that’s coming out 3/06/2020. Hope to see you do a review.
I'll check them out at the Northwest Sports Show next month. Maybe I'll take a video.
Me too but that price point 😑. Probably too high for me with a new bass blower on the horizon.
I went ahead and pulled the trigger, got it and I’m not all that impressed. I have Daiwa’s Steez AGS rod and I am gonna say I prefer titanium guides with SiC rings or torzite. I feel too much of the line coming in, Miss the smoothness. Anyone who wants my 2020 St Croix can have it at a discount.
@@NFiltr8Red I'll take it
Hey Brian! I definitely have been looking into a st. Croix rod - crappies fishing at its best on the ultra light
Torzite is brittle. Don't drop it on the driveway. As far as friction goes, you may get 6 inches further on a 40 yard cast. (not really any difference, it is?).
Hi! Nice review! Whats the best application for LEGEND X 6'8 xfast model? Light Texas and soft shad? Its a versatile Rod for finesse technics for you? Thanks!
I've not owned that rod, so I'm not totally sure.
Great review as always. I moved away from st Croix as well I their bass line. However I love the avid rods for trout.
Thank you!
Your spot on with US made fit and finish, sadly it's like Americans aren't taking pride in the looks of what they're building. My Megabass rods are works of art, besides being excellent purpose built tools.
Your right about that warranty though. I broke a St.Crois rod while on vacation, fishing Snake River Jackson Hole, and they overnighted me a free replacement (to the Hotel I was staying at).
Great video ..... and yes you are right to say that the St-Croix legend Bass are realy badly balanced ! I am happy to finaly hear an honest opinion...I will be buying the Legend X 6"10 medium xfast and pairing it with my Shimano Aldebaran MGL
Ima St. Croix guy exclusively...love there stuff! Thanks for the review buddy
I also love Croix and I'll always have a few of their rods in the box.
I wonder how the new Legend Extreme will be, that price is wild high though. JDM rods don't seem so expensive anymore.
It seems to me that the Legend X and Legend Elite made the previous Legend Xtreme rather pointless. Instead of killing the line, they are rebooting it and putting it into a new higher price point. My hunch is that they spent a LOT of time and money R&Ding the skin handle and they need the sales to continue. It's a big risk on their part because they are going after the NRX crowd.
$650 lol
Really good video thanks for your time and advice 👍 I agree with you 1000 %
Thank you!
Good review. I think St Croix is not the same company they were 5-10 yrs ago. St Croix moved away from lifetime warranty to 15 yr, still a long time. They tend to focus more on Mid to low end rods while high end are good but not great. When legend xtremes first came out they were amazing for their time. Recoils, blanks and finish were all excellent.
So which model is Good for sensitivty that i can use with my Alderbaron? Im a new subscriber to your channel and i enjoy your content. So any feed back would be appreciated
Which model of the legend X?
@@PunchFishing that's what was asking you. For yiur advce on which model i should get for my reel. But if you suggest another brand i would be open to that
Looks like it would also be a great 1/2oz topwater walking bait rod, just from seeing the action of it. Have you done that with this model? Just seems like it can do it all with action like that
I've not tried it! You may be on to something.
@@PunchFishing Well, 2 years after this comment, I just ordered one(the Elite version though for the full cork handle). Got it for around $300 through my work. They don't have many decent rods but they had 1 of these available so I seized the opportunity. Excited for it and I'll be pairing it with the new Zillion.
Oh, and I ordered way too much stuff through Omnia with your discount. Thanks lol
What’s your thoughts on the st. Croix Legend Elite??
I’m very curious cause I have this rod 7’4” hf.
I’m no guru but this is an awesome rod, how does it rank up with the nrx, etc????
I've not used the Legend Elite, but they are basically the same as Legend X but with full cork handles.
Thanks for the info. Is it more sensitive than the Megabass X-Bites? Which one would you recomend for texas riging?
Sensitivity in this price point is usually all very good, it's really impossible for me to say which is more or or less sensitive. The tip on the legend x is a bit softer, and the fit and finish on the Xbites is way better. St croix has a better warranty. There's trade offs with both. You just have to decide!
I'm looking for a rod suitable for texas rigging in the 3/16 - 1/2 range, with not a lot of vegetation. Leaving aside the finishes, maybe I will opt for this Legend X model. Any other model to consider or do you recommend?
Thanks for your time
What were your overall thoughts on the old Legend Extremes? I recently found a 6’3 M xfast spinning used ...ultra light and ultra sensitive which I was looking for something super “finessey”
The spinning rods were really good! Love the balance and they were pretty crisp and fun to fish. Plus one of the best colors St Croix ever did on a blank.
PunchFishing I wasn’t sure about a 6’3 rod in the beginning...shorter than any other bass rod I’d ever used before but it’s actually a pleasure to fish and handles fish fine...enjoying the videos, recently picked up the 72MH Expride after watching your and others Expride reviews...great stuff 🤙🏼
That rod's a gem.
Have you noticed the balance issues with all st croix rods? I have a few 7ft-ish rods and they balance fine. I wonder if it is just their longer rods that have the issue.
I just picked up a 6'8 medium extra fast in this rod I that good to using 1/8 to 3/8 oz jighead using minnows and plastics from the bank?
Fishing for walleye
For sure!
@@PunchFishing good to hear I had some money burning a hole in my pocket went out to my local scheels then tried it out Iove it money well spent and hopefully money returned with walleye dinners have a good one!
So I have a FMJ and want a backup combo for jigs. How would you compare them to the FMJ? In things like load of the rod and balance. Should I just get another FMJ or Legend X?
What size jigs do you like to toss?
@@PunchFishing mainly 3/8 to 1 but I do love throwing wacky senkos also. So I kinda want it to do that also. Looking for pure sensitivity don't want a NRX tho lol.
Dude YES!!! I'm slowly getting rid of all my LTB's because they've jacked my wrist and elbow up. They're horribly balanced!
My wrist and forearm was literally sore a few times after frogging with a 7'4" heavy legend tournament bass rod.
@@PunchFishing That's what I have and it's trashed my arm and what not. Looking to get something else
@@ethanowens7687 what were you using it for?
I had a LTB 6'10" MH rod that was also so tip heavy I sold it after 3 uses. It was well made, and looked good , but I couldn't fish it without hurting my wrist and forearm.
Have you tried a legend Xtreme? I just picked one up and got the MHF instead of the MHXF so I could use it to skip docks with jig. It sounds like I should get the XF if Xtreme is similar bend.
I have not used any of the new legend Xtreme's
Hey man I’m looking for a jig/Texas rig rod and I have the bass x 7’1 mh fast and I kinda want an upgrade because I want something that can handle 3/8ths-1/2 oz mainly. But if I couldn’t get a new rod how do you feel about the one I have now for Texas rigs and jigs if you have ever used it. Bc in my opinion it feels weird with a 1/2oz jig on.
Just bought the 7’2 MH Expride with Curado DC. The rod is impossible to find BTW
There's a reason! It's very good.
How are the guides? Can you go from braid to floro with without your knot harming distants?
Yes absolutely, the guides are "normal sized" so leader knots should have no issues passing through.
punchfishing Thanks pre-ordered Metanium HG. Looking for a rod for it, may have found it. Thanks!
@@davidrauschenbach6871 a metanium on this rod would be so stupid light. I run 15lb invizix for this rod personally.
Brian, any experience with the St Croix Legend Glass??
Yes, they are probably the best pure glass cranking rods on the market. Period. I used the 7'2 M all last year for cranking and was very pleased with it. If you're really into cranking and want to try glass, it's the top of the mountain IMHO. Plus they look awesome.
@@PunchFishing that's what I needed to hear to make the transition to try one. I do a lot of light cranking for smallmouth , 1.5 squarebills and medium divers, so I am thinking of trying the 6'9" medium spinning version. Looking forward to the 2020 rod and reel lineup.
@@nawinchester its gonna be like an hour long... 😬
@@PunchFishing absolutely no worries on my end, it's one of my favorite UA-cam posts of the year. Your last one was awesome, and I'm actually thinking about doing something very similar. Haven't done a lot of video stuff for UA-cam, but I do think that people enjoy rod and real lineups and arsenal videos as people who are serious about the sport of fishing can relate to it and enjoy seeing what other people are using for equipment and how they use them. Looking forward to it. I'll pop some popcorn and settle in for the duration.
@@nawinchester Do it! I'll watch.
Did you happen to try the 6’8” medium legend tournament bass rod? That’s about the only one in the series that balances descent that I’ve found. Anything beyond that length is unbalanced and way too heavy
Yes. that's the jerkbait rod right? i had that one for 3 years and I actually did enjoy it. I actually kept it the longest out of all my Legend Tournament Bass rods.
punchfishing yeah that’s the jerkbait one. It’s a pretty good all purpose rod. But anything longer than that with the fish on a fluke pattern 😫 - bad on the wrist
Can buy a Legend X 7.1 mh ($380--used in excellent cond,,(Canadian,list $540)
Use Wud be 1/4- 7/16 jig, ,,3/8 creature,,sparse weed, weedlines,,OR new Expride 7'2 mh ($450 taxes in) Best choice?? Thx...
Witch rod have better sensitivity, legend xtreme old model or legend x?
I'm not sure! Legend X has pretty stellar sensitivity though.
What your opinion about the old legend Xtremes ? Which you think are better legend x or Xtreme?
Legend X are way nicer than the old blue Xtremes
@@PunchFishing i guess new rod coming soon 😂 because i already had the Xtreme but never held a X looks pretty nice
So the Legend X here is 7'1" MH Extra Fast?
yes
Hey I was just wondering. What's the difference bewteen this and the Legend Elite? I'm confused lol.
Nothing except for the handles. Split grip vs full cork
Is the Legend X as sensitive as the NRX ?
I would say it's about equivalent? They both are quite sensitive, but neither of them really stand above the other. The Legend X's action is way different than NRX, and has a better guide train, and is cheaper!
Mark Mcdonald , NRX is kind of a joke.
@@NFiltr8Red What do you mean ?
Mark Mcdonald , for the money. They aren’t even as light nor worth the money to me. I almost bought one online but had the chance to visit a pro shop and handle them. I bought me a Daiwa Steez AGS spinning rod instead. Way nicer!
NFiltr8Red I disagree. The NRX is possibly the best rod on the market
Would you pick this rod over the Shimano Expride 7’2” MH?
Oh man, great question! I would because it's better in 3 categories: weight, guides, and warranty. Plus the legend X is sensitive as hell.
Bro, Im buying this rod for 1/2oz and smaller jigs, texas rigs and senkos. Im looking at either the Aldabaran mgl 50 or the 2020 Metanium mgl for it. What do you recommend?
thank you
Aldebaran for sure
@@PunchFishing thank you!
Can I put 20# fluorocarbon on the Aldabaran? Or do you think its even necessary and I could use 15#? I will primarily be fishing the California delta
thank you
Is it more sensitive that the 172mh expride?
Yes, but it's also a a little more limited in it's applications.
Hunter Cossell I just ordered the 72 MH Expride tonight with the Curado DC. How do you like it?
I Think it’s more Sensitive then my imx pro or glx
If you guys look in my past uploads I do a deep dive on the 7'2 MH Expride. It's a fantastic rod.
in ur videos from now on, can u hold the rod with one finger to show the balancing point? that'd be greatly appreciated
I can, however that's going to change depending on the reel you pick.
@@PunchFishing no worries as long as u state the reel u have on. thx a lot. appreciate the videos
@@PunchFishing that being said, it doesn't change THAT much even with different reels. unbalanced rods with a chronarch or metanium will still be slightly unbalanced with an 8oz bantam instead. know what i mean? btw, idk if you've noticed but i've been checking out like all of your vids lol. glad i found your channel.
Didn't notice the guide wrapping on my x until you pointed that out and mine is the same. But it doesn't look to bad next to my e6x now that's bad. Lol
It's best to look at St Croix rods from a distance
Well the only bad thing is when they tuck the thread in it tends to bunch the wrap. On mine at least the wraps don't overlap in spots like my Loomis.
Awesome review!
Is this the 7'1 mh xfast or the 7' mh fast?
Hey BTW, loomis rods are wrapped by old ladies also
Love the vids though
Brian do you have an IG account? I’m always asking pros and shimano reps for advice. You seem to have a ton of experience with a lot of the rods I like, have or getting soon. Thanks
I'm on IG but it's a Private account. Shoot me a request though: kungfupunch
Have you legend x 71mhxf?
What reel is that
Shimano Aldebaran
Did the promo code go away?
it's currently Punchmay15
I'm also from Wisconsin. I support st.croix rods, mostly spinning rods because their baitcast models don't compete. They need to fire whoever is in charge of design. I've been into high end rods for 15 years and every time they release a new line I'm let down. The balance is bad because the handle length per model is much shorter than other companies like MB. I want st.croix to get it right so bad. With Legend Xtreme was stoked about AGS guides. Then the handle looks like a shaped turd. I'm not overly concerned with bling or looks but they could screw anything up. St.croix could literally pull any username from tackletour with 3+ stars below their SN and get better designs. It's so disappointing.
Just picked up a legend elite 7mhf. How does the sensitivity compare to the NRX?
Hard to say honestly, I find my legend X to be incredibly sensitive. It's kind of a subjective thing but it's definitely fitting for the price.
@@PunchFishing Thanks for the quick reply! Can't wait to get out on the water with it!
Do you have the st croix extream rods ?
Review
The new ones or the old ones?
punchfishing .. ?? Hmmm good question . I was looking at the new ones I suppose at tackle warehouse - like you if I’m going to pay that much $ I’d like some eye candy .
The back handle extremes have it .
Another question if you don’t mind - here in Vegas we don’t have any decent tackle stores - so a lot I can’t touch before I buy .
Do you have a Gloomis IMX ?
I do have an expride .. how does the IMX compare ??
More money - is it more sensitive ??
I’ve always been on the fence with an IMX
I don’t know what to expect for $350
Ignore the “ extream “ question .. I just read your writing in a post below 😉
@@deangruwell6555 I'd say the IMX is a step down from the Expride. However there some some good technique specific rods in the IMX rods that people seem to love.
punchfishing I kinda thought that would be the case - IMX is more expensive - yet the expride is a better rod .
I’ll quit giving the IMX thought - thAnks 😎
You planning on getting the new St Croix Extreme rod with the AGS guides? Also, how about showing us some of the combos in action in future videos? 😬
Honestly I like just nerding out and talking about gear. Filming on the water means a ton of time editing. I'll try next year. I've been wanting to film a tournament just for fun (I fish in a local Club).
As far as the Legend Xtreme rods, I'll have to wait and see. The price point is RIDICULOUS because AGS guides are not more expensive than Torzite and it's using the same SC5 blank that they have been using for years now (I assume). I really need to figure out what justifies the $200 price bump over a legend X. I get the "skin handle" is expensive and difficult to make but they made them for years at the $400 price point with the previous Xtremes. I don't get it.
@@PunchFishing I did talk to a factory rep about that blank and he started that it's not the same blank as the original extreme. Sounds like they are using a tighter scv weave and different resin for a denser blank to aid in sensitivity. There was a good article on them on the mlf website. Tackle warehouse website and blog were way off. Not good communication on StCroixs part on that.
@@leojeidy1143 I agree St Croixs marketing around this rod launch has been a huge fail
Enjoying your videos... Can you post the 15% discount to Omnia Fishing?
The current code is punchmarch15
Your talking about rod power at the end of the video, but displaying the action of the rod...
Yea I mix up power and action all the time in my head. My mistake.
PunchFishing still a great video though! I’m in the process of persuading myself to spend the money on this rod. haha
Are the guides micro?
No, not micro guides.
Look up the color "celedon." Pronounced "SELL-uh-Don." Maybe that's it.
for the price I'd just get the Expride.
You'd be a fucking fool lol
@@HanSoloxcs not really.
Geez ,, this was work watching this review ,, pretty much skip to the 12:34 mark ,, then start watching ,,,
To make it worst, St. Croix bumped this to $600. Lol
3
St croix makes way too many of their high end spinning rods in med/XF... I wish they would make a 6ft 8in med in straight up fast power. They seem to have moved away from this.
Yea I 100% agree. They are missing a lot of models in their line.
Even the Megabass made in China rods are so much more quality than St. Croix could ever dream to deliver.
too bad st croix stopped including torzite in 2024
Never liked them , they always felt heavy 🤷🏾♂️
Sounds like someone is just a flat out Hater can't even stand to watch the intire video..
Ok 🤷♂️
You are one picky boy lol. I own 2 St Croix Bass X's 1 St Croix Triumph 1 St Croix Eyecon and a St Croix Avid X and I love them all they all have diffrent purposes for me but yeah I love them. Also don't compare good rods to shit rods just saying.
I'm a fan of the Legend X's! And yes, I'm picky.
