- "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" is a 13th century Christian hymn to Mary, portraying her suffering, the title meaning "the sorrowful mother was standing." It's an amazing piece of classical music that has been recomposed over 750 times, and this rendition by Floor Jansen and Simone Simons is a masterclass on expertly performing this live.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Epica with Floor Jansen for the first time, performing "Stabat Mater Dolorosa” live.

A classical song in the middle of a metal concert and the whole crowd in absolute silence, beautiful.
To be more precise, it's a Baroque piece, not Classical, but yeah, beautiful :)
That happens in every metal concert whenever something amazing is about to unfold.
Indeed it is! ❤
@@cancelled_user Baroque is a sub-category of classical, isn't it ?
@@isbjrn358 Actually no.
In a broad sense, you can call any old music "classical", which is what most people do. But if you want to be more precise, you need to know that the Classical period was (roughly) from 1750 to 1820, preceded by Baroque period and followed by Romantic period. However, exact years for these periods are not set in stone and some dates can overlap. That's why I said roughly.
i love it how the crowd is wild till the orchestra begins and every one is quied try that. metalheads apriciate the classical music.
We really do 👌🏼
Pure respect - as classical music is the foundation of Metal.
We do. Singing our lungs out in the crazy parts, but we can be really quiet if the moment requires us to.
Beauty is universal. ❤❤
Yes we do... appreciate classical music... and metal, of course
Lets not forget this was performed in front of a pretty much straight metal audience and the respect metal people have for music that is simply quality, no matter the genre, is shown with the dead silence during the performance until the roar at the end.
Metalheads and their bands are among the most erudite and knowledgeable fans of music.
We respect the old ways our "Metal in spirit" Forefathers laid for us. Vivaldi, Beethoven, Bach and Mozart among many others.
What we all want to know is;
When will you be joining in and singing with a symphonic metal band ?
I would love to see & hear that!
Yesssssssss please do
I'd love to see a collab with Kardashev also!
One day please
Lizzy & Elizabeth would be awesome!
Simone is a Siren straight from the pages of mythology and Odin himself would see Floor as a fine Valkyrie. There is a combination of strength and sweetness in both Floor and Simone's voices that causes even this ancient, sorrowful hymn to elicit a joyful response. And Elizabeth, well, joy is what she does!
I do prefer Greco Roman mythology. What's up with this Odin/valkyrie overating lately?
@@rogeriopenna9014 Larger and/or more recent pop culture presence?
@@rogeriopenna9014 Symphonic metal mostly associates with Viking and Norse mythology, that's why the singers of those bands are referred as such.
@@rogeriopenna9014 oh I dunno, Dutch finish Nordic roots of a lot of metal music. Even Gothic style seems to be closer to Germanic / proto Norse than it does to greco roman.
@@rogeriopenna9014 Both of these women are Dutch and therefore descended from Vikings, or at least Viking-adjacent people. So the comparison is only natural.
I don't know if anybody's explained the full backstory here but it's really interesting.
So, Simone Simons was inspired to study classical singing after listening to Tarja Turunen on Nightwish's Oceanborn. At the same time, she was dating Mark Jansen, who was guitarist and growler in After Forever, Floor's first band. He quit AF in 2002 and started Epica with Simone (they broke up at some point after that but kept the band together), and then by the time this performance was recorded, Floor had started ReVamp and then taken over as Nightwish's lead vocalist.
Oh, and Simone was in a long-term relationship with Oliver Palotai of Kamelot and was pregnant with their first child when this performance was filmed (you can just see her baby bump in some of the shots). They have since married.
THis was recorded in March 2013 so 2 months before the legendary Nightwish Wacken 2013 concert.
Yup both of them were inspired by Tarja Turunen to train in classical singing
Epica is also inspired after one of Kamelot's albums
This. This is why I'm here with Elizabeth, above all others. I want to her to dissect this gorgeous, haunting slice of the Sacred. I'm used to a soprano and either a mezzo or an alto taking the roles. Never heard Simone & Floor caress it before. This should be heavenly and instructive.
You'e going to watch a Disney/unicorn princess analyze a 13th century christian hymn that is being sung by a siren and a valkyrie. How could it not be awesome?!
What is, in my mind, even more incredible than the performance itself is the reaction of the fans to this.
I mean, this is a metal concert and then they play something like this - and the fans love it.
Imagine a band in _any_ other genre doing something similar during one of their concerts and their fan's reaction...
Honestly, I can hardly imagine that this kind of appreciation is unique to metal. I'm no fan of pop, but I've seen plenty of instances where a pop oriented band/artist did a rock song or something else outside of their comfort zone and it being hugely appreciated.
That's because metal is the most classical-influenced musical genre, and normally metal audiences are the most open to other musical influences. There are probably more metal sub-genres than there are musical genres, with more diversity between them than diversity between whole genres. Metal opens your mind like no other music.
@@francescosirotti8178 there is definitely a lot of variety and acceptance within it, but I have a problem with the "like no other music" part in your comment. That kind of contradicts the entire point of metal being inclusive 😅
@@Bartjo32 How so?
If group A likes things a, b, c, all the way to x, y and z and group B likes only things d, e and f, how is stating that group A is more inclusive than group B a contradiction in itself?
Now, if group A would shut out anything that group B likes, you would have a point, but if A _does_ accept more variants of music than group B, then _by definition_ A is more diverse/inclusive in their acceptance of music than B and stating that in no way diminishes A's diversity.
@@EllenbergW metal is inclusive, I'm not saying otherwise. But you backhandedly bashing other genres for not being as inclusive (which is disputable) is not really strengthening your argument..
Simone was 15 weeks pregnant during this song. And as you know, Simone and Floor know each other very well and have been singing together a lot. Sadly for me as a Dutchie, they do not live in the Netherlands anymore. Simone lives in Germany and Floor in Sweden.
As someone who played brass for seven years, I like to imagine how cool it would be to be a classical musician in an orchestra and perform with a heavy metal band in front of a wild crowd lol
Now this is how you start a week....Elizabeth, Simone and Floor. That level of awesomeness on one screen🤯😁
Preach!!
Classical singers seem to be able to just slay the metal genre as well I think a lot of people don't realize just how well trained some of these metal singers are....amazingly talented !! Its almost like the ying and yang of music!!
"Thank you! Wow, look at that!" Floor is so humble, as if she doesn't realize how much that crowd was losing their minds over seeing her walk onstage.
you really should ask Floor for an interview on your channel. would love to see you two talk about vocal technique, the close link between metal and classical music, nightwish, her side projects and anything that comes to your mind. go for it!
THey plan out interviews out months in advance so expect it in 2022 sometime.
Get Simone too!
Nice coming back to Epica! Even though this is not their song or even a metal song, the fact they chose to do it in this important concert is great, such respect for this beautiful hymn, also from the crowd
I hope she recognizes how valuable her critique is. I learn alot from this channel.
This is the BEST analysis of this performance ever on UA-cam. Thank you Elizabeth.
Thank you for suggesting this one. You're very much welcome! ❤
I still think the most amazing thing about this performance is that it took place in the middle of a Heavy Metal concert
You can't not well up hearing this. A masterpiece of composition with 2 of the top 5 vocalists on the planet. Both such emotive and connected....man, breathtaking, haunting and crushing in weight.
I don't know about the rest who watch this video but Floor and Simone bring me to tears.
As always, your observations are spot on. The composer lived in the early 1700s so Bel Canto was becoming a thing. The matching vibratos was very noticeable and beautiful. The composers use of dissonance and resolution was executed quite well and always on pitch. The scooping, you mentioned was noticeable at the beginning and marred the performance, bit not as noticeable later on. All in all, beautiful.
I think the scooping is deliberate, to lengthen notes and sound dramatic.
These two are not doing classical for a reason, they don't like the restrictions. It's not like they don't have the skills, they do.
They are wealthy beyond belief because of their talent. They made wise career decisions.
Keep reacting to more Epica, Simone is such a great singer with her crystal clear voice!
When you have the two best rock/metal female voices of all times in a single song, honestly, what can go wrong? 🍻🍺🤘🤟
Love it! did not know Floor and Simone did a version of this song. Heard for the first time about Stabat Mater in a quiz when Astrid Stockman and Lieven Scheire did a wager if Lieven won "De slimste mens ter wereld" he and Astrid would learn and record the Stabat Mater. So he won and they did a wonderfull and funny job
I listen to Epica since ever, basically, when they started. And, it's amazing how good Simone became. I mean, it's always amazing to see how a singer grows. I also find that she has such a beautiful voice color. When you hear her, you always know it's her.
Someone compared her as a siren, I would compare her more like a Nymphe (personification of nature, js). A weightless creature that is in tune with the music, fine and gracious.
It might interest you to know these two ladies were both taught by the same vocal coach early in their career. A lady called Amanda Someville. She also appears as backing vocals on a lot of epica's earlier albums. And even stepped in as lead singer for epica on tour for a while when Simone was unwell
I can listen to Simone Simon’s voice solo 24/7. It’s so beautiful. The notes are so solid that you could climb them. 🥰. These ladies are phenomenal. Proud metal head.
It warms my heart to see you love opera so much and to give such a heartfelt reaction to these powerful women of Metal who just so happen to sing opera/classical music as well. I think it is just beautiful. I am so glad you found Floor who led you to Simone. ❤️
So many thanks that you took this suggestion Elizabeth !!! Happily looking forward to your reaction 🤗 💖
You are very much welcome!
Hi Elizabeth, this is my first time listening to this song, and I loved the performance. Simone and Floor, two of the most beautiful voices in metal, sang their hearts out in this amazing duet. They mesmerized the audience w/ their rendition, and it was magical to watch. Thank you, Elizabeth!!! 💙
This is such a glorious piece, the string melody is a cry straight into one's soul... Then they start singing! 💖💖💖
You're welcome, Kirby! Glad you really enjoyed this one. Hope you're doing great! ❤❤
This ancient classical heartfelt piece was performed during a metal concert..... Wow!
Next to metal/rock I absolutely adore the baroque period where rock stars of the period like the castrato Farinelli wowed the audiences, composers like Handel, Bach, Mozart, Purcell to name a few packed halls just like today. My wish is to see Handels Theodora performed next being lovebites and Jinjer!! As for this performance/reaction and no matter who sings this ( Julia Lezhneva ( who is my fav Baroque singer) along Phillippe Jaroussky) makes ones eyes water!! Thanks for your reaction 😎🤟
That was gorgeous. Your observations added a lot to it, though I usually don't like my listening interrupted like that. This time, it was helpful. I've always been a Floor Jansen fan; this was my first time to hear Simone. They're both terrific.
Elizabeth did Sancta Terra from this concert a year ago. Here it is. ua-cam.com/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/v-deo.html
I love that their different, almost contrasting singing styles brought out the musical tension the composer must have felt when he wrote this piece, the tension he felt knowing both sides of life, the beauty of living and the sorrow of death.
This presentation reminds me a little of how Sharon den Adel and Anekke van Giersbergen did their famous version of "Somewhere".
Elizabeth will obviously love this one. I can't wait.
Very pleasantly surprised by this. Don't think I've ever heard metal singers sing a piece of classical music - and they sing it very nicely too! Brings two musical worlds (and their respective followers) together.
Waiting for Ayreon - Eye of Ra live! :D Floor and her sister are doing choirs there :D
I am so thrilled to listen the two best female vocalists singing together 🥺🥺🥺🤘🤘🤘🥺🤘Hail to Queens Of Metal🥰🥰🥰
Psst. Hey. Hey, you! Yeah, you. Diana Ankudinova's newest performance just dropped this weekend. She covers Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling In Love. And it's possibly the first time I've ever enjoyed a cover of that song. It's on a new singing competition on the HTB (NTV) network with a new set of performances every weekend. The ten singers are also the judges. No buttons or anything, just a classic point system. Diana won the day, of course. Good thing they had her perform last. I would dread having to follow that act. Since it's on the HTB network you'll have to do that clever border crop using a glass-like transparency/blur effect along the edges to keep the algo away.
On this Epic performance; I think every song I've watched from this particular set was amazing. The live orchestra/choir really made the difference.
You completely nerded out on this one I love it lol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The most amazing thing here is that you have some 5,000 metalheads in complete amazement and quiet as can be listening to this 700-year old masterpiece. Music has no boundaries or pigeon holes.
The text may be 700 years old, but the music is 300 years old. Giovanni Pergolesi lived from 1710 to 1736
This gives me chills every time i hear this. First of all it is a beautiful piece of classic music it self, and hear tose two ladies singing it, is stunning. So now i'll have to search and find it sung by classic singers. When you described the background of this, it made sense. I have wondered if it was in that direction it was written. It made me in a way think of Mozart and his deathmass, wichalsoisabeatuifulpieceofmusic. .
You are simply the most pro reactor on the NET - damn you you are good - and the reason why we are so many that listen carefully to you 👍
YEEEEEEESSSS!!! I've been asking for this one for yonks!! I can't wait to hear what you think of them singing this classical duet. Because you've already heard Floor sing a soprano aria, but not sing an alto part! ;)
(Symphonic) Metal fans love a good piece of classical music
Love Floor, Simone,, song, analysis and analyst ❤️😢
Brrrrrrrr......emotion, emotion, emotion...
And You, Elizabeth, You set this extremely beautiful performance on yet another much higher level!
This is one of my absolute favorite classical pieces; heard it first probably 40 years ago as the orchestra my father played in performed it. Very brave of the two ladies to perform it, because it's not easy (and you can hear Simone has some small issues with the looooong lines), and both are sopranos. My favorite recording of this is the one by Emma Kirkby and James Bowman, one that can drive me to tears when I'm not in the right mood, but this is pretty special too
She was pregnant during this performance. Probably affected her ability to sing longer lines.
You are REALLY in your element on this piece. I love it, it really shows your expertise in these reactione!
Omg..Epica!...nice to see you covering this.
Delain are good also, not very well known, but worth a listen!.
For Halloween please do Simone and her husband covering “This Is Halloween” from Nightmare Before Christmas
I would love to see a reaction to that! It was a great cover, and Simone did a lot of different things with her voice that we don't often hear in Epica like character voices and more usage of her lower register. Her husband, Oliver, has a surprisingly versatile voice as well.
Yes yes yes
ua-cam.com/video/UuKp0DRiMJw/v-deo.html
I need this to happen. I love that song, Simone’s voice, and the breakdowns we get here from Elizabeth
"The Haunting" from Simone + Roy would also be Hallowe'en-appropriate... :)
You are training my ears. :) Thank you :)
Glad to be of service. 😉
Pergolese's Stabat Mater is an absolute classical favourite of mine too (aswell as Orffe's Carmina Burana). My music tastes range from early classical all the way through to metal, rock, reggae, swing, edm, trance, drum n bass, folk, Americana, Dark Country, murder ballads (check out The Heavy Horses "Murder Ballads and other love songs"), a capella.... It's fairly well varied. Lol.
Great to see this covered so beautifully!
I KNEW you'd love this!
I was called upon to play lead violin for this way back in music school, as an accompaniment as it was an exam piece for singers.
I think at best they were ok, and certainly none even remotely this good. As a result I got a bit sick of it back then, but time heals that and now I love it as I'm mentally there with the violin, listening to these two lovely ladies wring the emotion from every note.
I think they chose their parts wisely, as Simone's voice has a brighter timbre than Floor's so although she can undoubtedly reach the notes for the alto part, it would lack some of the expansiveness of Floor's voice in that range, while that very brightness is more apparent in the higher range and gives the contrast between their voices.
I believe the earliest known copy is from a 13th century gradual in the archives of a Dominican nunnery in Bologna, which has cast doubt on its attribution to the Franciscan Jacopone Da Todi OFM in favour of Pope Innocent III, as to have been copied into a gradual in a nunnery of a different order shows it was probably in regular use before Jacopone was writing much of anything. So more likely 12th century than 13th. That was a relatively recent discovery though.
12:40 about Floor pumping more sound into the lower notes: ofcourse singing with a microphone is an advantage here. You can see Simone holding the mic further from her mouth than Floor does, so Floor doesn't have to compensate for all of the volume difference with her own voice.
Epica...never enough is my fave song!.
I was speachless after this magnificent performance and your comment discovers every hidden corner of music. Waiting for a trio..Elizabeth, Simone and Floor together!
Thank you Elizabeth! Your vast knowledge of all things Classical and the beautiful sounds these two amazing women produce made for very enjoyable viewing. Keep up the fantastic work educating us. You make this world a better place! Peace & Love!!!
Reading the comments, ive realized most people dont really know metal lovers (specially those of us who love symphonic metal) ADORE classical music because it is the source of it all. See, a great part of metal revolves around reaching that musical virtuoso status, which is where the epic guitar solos come from, i.e.
So, yes, metal loves ADORE classical music and music as an ART, not as an industry (i.e. pop, reggaeton, latin pop, etc).
🥰🤗😘
thank you for the pro explanations, elizabeth. a joy to watch.
You're welcome!
Thank you. You bring opera alive. Excellent analysis.
This song is so beautiful by itself. You add in Floor and Simone plus the orchestra and choir and you’re in for something special
As others have said, you should check out Simone’s cover of This Is Halloween
Lovely. Thank you Elizabeth
You're Welcome! ❤❤
A lovely reaction.. again. Thanks!
You're welcome, Bert! Glad you like it. Thanks as well!
just highlights why this lady is worth listening to -- most enjoyable delivery on a lesson in music and how to sing, not a grunt who just reacts with a few duuhs and grunts at all -- thank you
Whan a singer the calibre of Elizabeth starts grinning uncontrollably at the mention of the on coming singers name . you know you are probably in for a treat. Oh yeah we are!
Liz, no matter how much I have heard a youtube video, you add layers to the pleasure and understanding.
i was there !!! best show ever !! can you do a reaction of the full show ?? ONLY 3 HOURS !
Too much awesomeness in just one video❤️🤟🏼
Yes! More Epica please!
Its a really gracious sound! nice review too !
Thanks, David spqr!
Ahhhhh I love Baroque music so much
Wonderfull reaction!
Thanks, Charly! ❤
A awesome Reaction \Analysis again. i dont know, the Composer do it in his last Month of his Life .And he know it. Only Wow . FLOOR AND SIMONE 🌹❤🥰 Elisabeth, you are🤘🤘🤘🤘
that is amazing 💛💛💛😘💛😘😘
As always I enjoy your explanation and enthusiasm.
Their singing made it impossible for me to hold back my tears.
Thank you so much. I had never heard either of these remarkable singers before, so this was truly a joy.
Here are Simone and Floor together at this same concert. Sancta Terra ua-cam.com/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/v-deo.html
@@paulriddle7818 Thank you!
Outstanding Liz.
I have about 10 classical renditions of Stabat Mater.
This is superb,
if its missing anything, it is the intimacy allowed by venue.
Omg I have been waiting for this reaction!
Thank you for suggesting it! ❤
Hold on Liz! These two probably sound a whole better singing the old music than the old ones would sound singing metal! I could listen to these two singing this all day!!
That was really beautiful 😭😭😭
Thank you Elizabeth!!! I have learned so much since I have started watching your channel. I like to sing, but I'm afraid it is not my best gift, however, having you explain all the work that goes into singing, i have a better understanding of what it takes. Also, it would be great to hear you cover some of the talented women from the metal genre (Brittany, SImone, Floor, Lizzy, etc).
In what other genre of modern music, would they stop the show, take a few minutes to perform a work from the 1700s. This is what I admire about the Metal genre.
This is the best version of this song, both Floor and Simone did it with all things they needed :D
And that at a symphonic concert :D
The fans love it :D
This song is pure beauty
Thank you, Elizabeth.
It's as if you've given me new eyes through which to see this performance.
(Or, I guess, new ears, because it's a sonic experience rather than visual. But the metaphor works better with eyes.)
Love that reaction, your analysis was very great, thannnks!
So now, Epica, only Epica 😂
There are so many amazing songs by Epica that deserves your analysis..." Chasing the dragon" from the same show is amazing.
so stunning to hear the way these fantastic performers cross genres so well
Please do more Epica!!
Finally, I was so interested in your knowledgeable opinion of this performance. Next to this beautiful piece and the epic performance by Floor and Simone I've always been impressed that they had the guts to do this midway a full blown metal concert. And the public just loved it.
I love to hear beautiful voices by most talented 💖 musicians who are not self indulgent but are performing from a purely natural place. Wonderful
Great analysis!
Thanks! ❤❤
Absolutely Beautiful !
I would love to hear these two ladies sing ; "The Flower Duet", from Léo Delibes' opera Lakmé.
And maybe run for a fall
Or the cat duet...
Excited for this! You should do some Beast in Black too, that singer will blow your mind!!
This video totally deserved my "like". Thank you so much for your comments and information about the context the song was written, I made the whole difference.
(3:35) Classical music and metal have in comun that both can express glory and melancoly at the same time, no other style can do that
What a great song from 2 fantastic singers!! I can picture them in a choir in a big cathedral filling up the hall.
Thank you, this was very educational. Your classic background clearly is very apparent. As always - I love your appreciation and positivity towards the artists and your dancing eyebrows.
The Goddess and the Queen....🤩🤩🤩🤩
Awesome
