My siblings and I played this game a ton in the late 90's and all got pretty good to the point where games were quite competitive. Most of the time the winning round was -18. One of our youngest siblings had one of those fisher price colored ring sets that you would stack on a white base with a yellow pole. Not sure how it started but anyone who messed up a shot would get handed the "shaft" and have to keep it till someone else messed up. No one wanted to get the shaft. Fun game, fun times.

If you were to create an insane character in the gameboy version of mario golf and transfer it to the N64 you can drive any green in the game. I never got the transfer pack as a kid and didn't have a 64 but I made plenty of characters on the gameboy that could hit 400+ yards without a power shot.
I read somewhere that even at max power, the transferred characters max out at 400 yards on N64. Even so, I'd love to play around with it. And I wonder how long it would take to make it all happen.

Kudos, great video! I thought it would be one of those 1000 facts in 20min across all Mario Golf games, but it was a glorious, heart-filled ode to a hidden gem. Keep up the good work!
That hidden song with 4 Yoshis or 4 DKs is the Palm Clubs music from the Gameboy color version of Mario Golf. I do remember discovering that hidden song on my own as a kid. I clocked a ton of hours into Mario Golf N64 and GBC.
I'm sure someone's already mentioned this but you can absolutely and effectively emulate gbc-64 transfer for Mario Golf. I did it on my channel once and it was surprisingly easy. Although I'm sure the nostalgia purists won't approve, I did grow up with the real hardware and can tell you it's the same thing. Great video btw
> Wario isn't exactly a character you often select, but it's just an amazing attention to detail Sorry to burst your bubble but this is 99.9% not "attention to detail", but rather "Nintendo in that era was typically sticking to color palettes mapped separately per-object to save storage space". You will find that every single object in the game has a total number of colors far far fewer than the number of colors supported by the game overall (on wario I count 9 which can probably be expanded to 16 when including all shaded polygons as a separate color, which means they could store the color palette in a 4-bit structure), which means that the W he generates in his win screen simply automatically points to the same color on wario's color palette as the W on his hat. Attention to detail is not exactly what I would call that.
Honestly, this video is bringing back the many memories I had playing this game over two decades ago. I think I'm going to get back into it soon. :) Interesting video as well. 👍

Overall, great video! I might like Toadstool Tour more than this game, it's always great to see content for 64!
Did you know in the intro, you can see Donkey Kong carry Baby Mario instead of Yoshi? If you've unlocked him, the intro will sometimes replace Yoshi's ball with Donkey Kong's ball.
One thing I've always wondered about is the rain in this game. It's as if the rain causes the ball to be harder to hit farther and I can't prove it lol
Aww, you didn't talk about the hidden password system meant for special tournaments. One of the cheat code books I owned back in the day even detailed the one to play as Donkey Kong for the long defunct Camp Hyrule site with a funny quip at the end: "And no, he doesn't have to wear those long polyester pants." They removed the special password system for the Switch Online release for obvious reasons.
I never played the N64 Mario Golf much, but I owned the Game Boy Color one. Played it death when I was younger. It was hard as hell honestly. The 1v1 games against different computer characters got really, really hard at a certain point. If you’d make one mistake, they’d beat you.

@@GamerFolklore Glad to see the hugely underrated GBC version get a mention. I’ve played a ton of golf games and the open world RPG style made it more memorable than most.
They should let us do transfer data between console and Gameboy games through the virtual console. I'm not sure how many N64 games had this functionality, but if they ever add GameCube it feels like it will be a must. So many GameCube games had weird extra link features.

Thank you for giving some shine to my all time favorite game. Been playing this game pretty much since release. Even still I had no idea about the Albatross Putt screen or the secret songs for 4 Yoshi or DK's. Although speedrunning this game has somewhat altered my ability to enjoy playing it casually, the music in this game is still some of the most relaxing video game music I've ever heard.
I could never beat Bowser as a kid, I once had him tied after 18 holes. The 4th or 5th hole into sudden death Bowser gets a hole in one. My heart sank, then I just turned the console off. I'm glad to know he was a cheater, lol.
Hi Goose, long time watcher for the past five years here. It's very cool to see you talking about Mario Golf, seeing it's one of the most slept upon Mario games. Most people usually settle for the GC one but the 64 one has some truly pristine vibes. I don't know if it's the music (even though Sakuraba worked on Mario Tennis as well) or the atmosphere as a whole, but it has something that gives it a very distinctive identity. I used to have a blast playing it when I was younger and would often boot up the N64 years later just to play it again. Also very glad to see you keep on delivering quality content after all these years, ty and keep it coming man. I hope I manage to catch you live soon

The Cartway terrain is a carryover from Hot Shots Golf on the Playstation. The first game was developed by Camelot and felt closer to Mario Golf compared to later Hot Shots Golf installments, which were developed by a different studio. It even had the same Get Character challenge as well.
I think Mario Golf should get the same treatment as Mario Party: a remake with courses, mechanics, characters, and game modes from its N64 and GameCube releases.

@@GamerFolklore Glad to see the hugely underrated GBC version get a mention. I’ve played a ton of golf games and the open world RPG style made it more memorable than most.
@Weener Schnitzel that sounds amazing
They should let us do transfer data between console and Gameboy games through the virtual console. I'm not sure how many N64 games had this functionality, but if they ever add GameCube it feels like it will be a must. So many GameCube games had weird extra link features.
They definitely should at least add some kind of compatibility through the Nintendo Switch Online.
Bowser just started his swing in second gear, dude.
So true.
The world is a cruel and unjust place. There is no harmony in the universe. The only constant is suffering

OMG, 24 minutes of useless Mario Golf facts and lore
This is so true.
“It’s over”
“We’re back”
Thank you for giving some shine to my all time favorite game.
Imagine if someone ROMhacked all the dummy names into the game as playable characters. Seeing Skull Kid, Nabooru, and Unagi would be really funny.
I know basically nothing about Mario Golf, so I look forward to seeing more videos about it in the future, Goose!
"The game has an indescribable ethereal soul"
Me: Bursts into loud laughter, a tear of nostalgia wells in my eye, and I am reminded again why I love the Goose.
One of the best games of all time. Easily put in over 1000 hours and still play in the netplay tournaments.
Nostalgia, indeed.
Mario Golf on the GC is still a constant play for my friends and I. Game has non stop replayability.
Something that is more lost in today's gamer landscape.
I really enjoyed this video, thanks for making it :)
Mannnnnnn this video brings me so many memories hahahah. Thank you so much for this
Pickles' ring shot is one of my fondest memories of that golden era, so glad it was included.
Great video ! I certainly want to see more of Mario Golf.
I can't recall why I traded this game in for Mario Tennis. This game was pretty crazy
both hold up today
Great video dude, owned an N64 but never played Mario Golf, found the video really interesting though
Thank you!
Now I'm wondering if this same kinda fact lore applies to my personal favorite, Mario tennis on the N64
Definitely! I don't know it as much. But it has its fair share of secrets & lore.
I've never played Mario Golf, but I'm 100% here for this.
The Cartway terrain is a carryover from Hot Shots Golf on the Playstation. The first game was developed by Camelot and felt closer to Mario Golf compared to later Hot Shots Golf installments, which were developed by a different studio. It even had the same Get Character challenge as well.
There's nothing quite like the original Mario Golf. I could play that game forever. I wish it were re-released on more things.
I think Mario Golf should get the same treatment as Mario Party: a remake with courses, mechanics, characters, and game modes from its N64 and GameCube releases.
That was no ordinary Twitter user in the final post. That is Romano, HE IS THE SAVIOUR!!! He ate ass to save Bitcoin.
That is really funny. I haven't kept up with that scene in a few years, so I didn't recognize him. Sounds epic.
