  • I was doing my Xmas shopping down Oxford Street (London) on Thursday night (20th Dec 2018), when I was stopped by the awesome playing of this three-piece rock band, busking at Oxford Circus late in the evening; they created a super atmosphere and played many songs, I caught parts of Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven; the solo at 2:12 particularly impressed me - I always dreamed what the solo could sound like if Page had made it longer on record (not found in any of the great man's live versions alas), this chap seems to have incredibly made that happen (it has that melodic continuity and verve) - more surprisingly as it was bitterly cold, so much that the bassist wore gloves, so the speed and agility of the lead guitarist's work was even more impressive. There's nothing quite as inspiring as a Gibson Les Paul screaming into the cold night air; the recording does not do justice to this very powerful live performance.
    I was truly astounded, like me many stopped to watch them (to my sides) while others carried on with their hectic Xmas shopping; I must've watched them for half an hour; I recorded this clip on my Samsung smartphone, which gave a fair recording, I must say. I didn't get the band's name so if anyone knows them (or watched it too) do please comment below so we can give them their due recognition ... anyway, thank you lads, you helped warm and cheer up a chilly but magical night for me, and others lucky enough to catch this fantastic performance - rock on!

    • @TheRealBKSchyster
      @TheRealBKSchyster 5 років тому

      @Hal Newell... bearing you soul is one thing ... and I would tend to agree with you!! I have been in this crazy biz we call "music" for over 40 years and have worked on every level... both on the stage in a professional touring act as an opener for many very serious national acts, as well as being a live sound engineer at the F.O.H./MON. WORLD/ level
      and a studio engineer as well with an ASC (college University in Greenwich Village, NYC... The only!) and pretty much recorded just about every genre of music in the rainbow!!
      HOWEVER...... I have watched several of these guys videos on Y.T., occasionally they nail it and it also looks like they have "interchangeable parts" in this band... Soooo, what I am trying to say is, rehearsal is the place to work ALL the bugs out including EVERYONE'S audio levels and seeing as how they play at this location on a fairly regular basis, they all should know where to be to have it sound the very best they can!!!
      In this business...... YOU ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR LAST PERFORMANCE AND... AND IN THE MOMENT, what I mean by that is, if by chance a major label "anyone" (producer/studio owner/engineer/tape operator/intern ...... A club or venue owner...OR a professional musician incognito or even Me... hears the one song where you just butcher it to hell and gone... and not all polished and tight ...... stick a fork in them, they are done!! AND THEY COULD HAVE BEEN THE NEXT UNDISCOVERED ACT until that moment...... had they shined like highly polished chrome on a Sunny, blue sky day!! FACT!!!!!!!!
      So when I critique a band, it is from the heart... good or bad, I don't blow smoke up someone's arse...... I just call it like I see it!!!!!!! Because if everyone tells them "they are great," "they really put their heart and soul into it," "it takes a lot to get up there in public" well, I am not trying to be sarcastic, BUT that is what we as musicians do and in front of of tens of thousands, and just do that shit with the volume of your guitar yo-yoing and they won't have mean old BK saying they didn't sound good...... oh no, no, no.... it's much worse, the crowd starts throwing shit up on stage.... bottles, feces, vomit, spit, piss, lighters, shoes, sneakers, fireworks, for Christ's sake even humans get thrown up on stage and what ever the hell else they can get their hands on ... ya know to get a point across!!!!!!! So in retrospect I am being nice by being honest and only throwing "words" at them... ya dig!?!? I hope they get to the top of the R-n-R heap one day or wherever they want, just do it and expect constructive feedback, and sometimes the honest feedback is the harshest of feedback!!! But it's the stuff that generally motivates people to get better, like way better to shut down the hardest of criticism and to say... neener, neener-boo, boo we don't suck any more (at least regarding my feedback to them!!) and look at us shine with our new recording contract or Our date book filled, ETC.!!
      ANYWAY, KEEP ON KEEPING ON GENTLEMEN!!!!
      PEACE 🤘

      Dear Steve Burk: The heartland of British spirit: The capital of my soul, being bred and reared there in my impressionable years as a youth. Even the cracks, crevices and culture of everyday life away from the tourists' vicinage, proved worthy of residing there. Enthusiasm drained when I was expatriated (not voluntarily) to a superpower -- which ran me down with its people's psychological war machine.

    Jesus... this one went to hell in a hand basket in about five seconds after the gtr player started the solo!! It sounded really good( trust me, or I would tell you if it sounded like a whale fart in a wind tunnel...)until he started upping his volume and mucking with the foot pedals!! Sometimes it is better to just stay in the pocket and leave "good enough" alone!! But worrying about your own place in the overall sound caused the entire song to fail...... and miserably at that!

      To bk Schyster: I beg to differ regarding adjusting his instrument. They are busking in the street, not Abbey Road Studios. Situations change: cars are moving, there are different types of vehicles, speeds and engine sounds; people are in different moods expressing themselves audibly and affecting the sound. He is in different segments of the piece where volume and synthetics need to be adjusted according to the spirit and style of the music.

    • @TheRealBKSchyster
      @TheRealBKSchyster 5 років тому

      @@eddyvideostar I am not any the lad can't play, and yes there are certainly "street sounds" however after going back and listen to this for the 22nd time ( with the last two being pushed through my McIntosh 275 system ...... yeah, I know we are not at #3 Abbey Road... but I want to give the benefit of the doubt... ya, man!) and really listened and not a lot of street noise was apparent in the mix and I have to trust that no board was used to mix the final sound. He was, still even in the dynamical sense of sound, louder than the rest of the lads... REMEMBER, I did say that it didn't sound bad until he either lost timbre from being too loud, or direction from concentrating too much on his spacial placement in the composition. In short something happened to cause him to try a compensation adjustment that led (all puns intended...)him to wallow a bit through his solo, which in turn detracted from the overall final quality of the song...... You must remember... a musician is almost always directly rated on his last performance and should always strive to be as perfect as possible... street band or studio stars, the end result is ALWAYS judged!!

    • @eddyvideostar
      @eddyvideostar 5 років тому

      To:@@TheRealBKSchyster To Bk Schyster: I applaud you on your extensive experience and credentials. There is no harm in believing you; though, my intrigue mounts regarding your *obsession* for this band of reduced talent, who is busking in the streets valiantly for a couple of bucks. *practicing, growing and experimenting.* Why would a person of your caliber put so much effort into listening so many times to the point of many questioning your mental state? You write a long comment of pedantic particulars and punctiliousness as if with every breath they take, they are endangering the aspect of losing out on a great contract by being snubbed by high-class promoters.

    • @TheRealBKSchyster
      @TheRealBKSchyster 5 років тому

      @@eddyvideostarThank you for any compliments , AND I can assure you that my mental health is quite sound! Are you a musician your self, do you play an instrument? I have devoted my lifetime to the art of music, spent many hours a day in the pursuit of musical perfection and I was always judged, at first by my parents, then my friends, also by those colleagues that I studied with. As time passes, my teachers became more critical and this all drove me to excel beyond the expectations of those who pushed me the hardest. The fruits of my labor eventually paid off in dividends that far exceeded my own expectations!
      So at times I can be critical of others, but I never forget that they are putting every effort forward to be the best they can be! And ask any hard working musician or band if they want a contract with a major or any label for that matter, and I assure you the response would be a resounding YEAH MAN, YES SIR, LET'S SIGN UP, and after all why learn how to play an instrument just to play for your kid sister's doll collection. No it's to play in front of a crowd of people 100 or 100,000, the number matters only when you raise your expectations of success. Also if you were to know the number of those "recognized" and where they were playing at the time, it would astonish you, and to know that if the question were posed to the one who said... "these guys rock, let's sign them up" why or what was the factor that made you stop before going into the subway station, I will bet the answer would be based on talent! I mean when was the last time you heard of or saw with your own eyes someone recognized because they were playing horribly or "wallowing" through a solo? Remember, I did say they sounded really good and only until the guitar player hit the lead ( even though they had ad-libbed the entire song to fit their needs)did the bands SOUND become out of control and swimming for dry safe land! Ultimately I was giving constructive criticism, which in itself is meant to encourage that guitar player and his band to always strive for your best performance, which at the time was not his best and I will almost guarantee that if you were to ask him, he would agree. Because you never know who is listening and how they could change a bands life and in the blink of the eye for that matter!
