The Americans got to the United States from England and settled in Virginia as squatters . Spain was so busy exploring and conquering that they didn't pay the squatters any mind and they were able to fly under the radar and started a settlement and the Native Indians had to help them to survive.

People forget that Puerto Rico was an independent province of Spain. It doesn't matter if the independence was acquired 1 month before the United States invasion. The United States had no right then or now to be occupying an independent nation.

Being a Spanish province doesn’t mean that Puerto Rico was independent. It had autonomy within the Spanish empire as a province. Every province of the Spanish kingdom had autonomous powers. Autonomy and independence are two different concepts.

It did not have independence with Spain you are sadly miseducated. They had finally been givin a similar position as PR has in the US after 400+ years of occupation and annihilation of the native population.
