Its best to just look forward while respecting each other. If you talk about it as if it is a problem then you are essentially recreating the problem. In this generation Of America it is not even a problem because we do not live in slavery times anymore, yet there is going to be some stigmas left behind which will eventually dissolve with the coming generations. @Kamar G I don't think he meant it in a bad way I think he meant it as not all Africans are from Africa. They are indigenous to those lands and weren't all brought through slavery. As we know all humans even the Chinese came from Africans in Africa but no one fights them on their Africaness...
Deshone Robinson Caribbean blacks may have been there a long time and make up majority of population but most were brought over as slaves by white colonialist just as they were in US and other parts of the world. Some of us have different features than others depending upon what areas/tribes we descended from. If we don’t look pure African thats because of race mixing. My late fathers mother from Barbados alledegly had East Indian and white in her but my father definitely looked like a black man. Bottom line we’re black and descendants of Africa.

@@Iridescence7770 yea (to be honest I don't really use the word Afro Dominican), but I mean more specifically those that are identifiably black and more of African descent, as there are many that are more European descent, white-passing, and I wouldnt necessarily label them as being black
Where I’m from (New York City born & raised) if you dare call a dominican any form of black or African they will curse u out & become extremely upset. I have met very few Dominicans that acknowledge let alone be proud of their true roots. I know this does not apply to everyone because there are ton of Puerto Rican’s that are the same way however in my personal experiences in New York I find that Dominicans are extremely racist towards blacks & black culture more than Puerto Rican’s. Puerto Rican’s are much more Americanized & closer to black people (In the Bronx) at least.
As a Haitian I would love to see this. Afro-Dominican former slaves fought alongside the whites in the war against Haiti (1840s). Trujillo really fukked up racial relations in the DR. Def not all but many dont seem to call out those that do here in the states. Im sure its many around that diaspora that are proud of their African heritage
The TERM "SALSA" was created by the FANIA Record label (NOT only by Puerto Ricans) because they wanted to GENERALIZE all the various Afro-Caribbean (Spanish) music genres under ONE TERM. Even though each rhythm was DISTINCT and different from one another to musicians although NOT to the general public. For example: Cha-Cha-Cha, Mambo, Son, Guaguanco, Plena, Bomba, AFRO-CUBAN-JAZZ/Descargas, Merengues, Boleros, Seis Jibaro music & Boogaloo were ALL under the UMBRELLA TERM of "Salsa."

@@erinlaboricua Being white is not about how you look, it's about exclusive European ancestry. Claiming you are white because you look like you can pass for having exclusive (meaning only) European ancestry is called "Passing", which is an interesting cultural phenomenon that has extensive research in the social sciences. Some studies suggest that it is a self-abusive defense mechanism to help people deal with the unresolved shame of their internalized racism.
@@gjone1 If that's your passive way of implying that I'm a racist, I'll happily put that to bed by denying that absurdity. All my life I was referred to as "white" by my peers, and at least in the area I grew up in, being "white" was majorly due to skin color. I'm proud of my Puerto Rican heritage and always correct people that I am not "white" in the way they believe, which yes, is based on how I look. I only recently learned about the term "white passing" earlier this year. Forgive me for not referring to myself as such when that is still new to me.

You realize that Jíbaros were European, right? They were Canarian migrants who were granted land by the Spanish government in the center of the island. The reason you're light is because the majority of your ancestors likely came from Europe.
It's sad when colonised and enslaved people dont acknowledge their african roots. It's because of their african gene most of them survived. We african are physically and mentally very strong

Very informative video. In Ponce, there is a statue (El Hombre Redimido - The Man Redeemed) that pays tribute to the Puerto Rico’s African ancestry. Also, to be correct, while reggaeton is popular in Puerto Rico, it began in Panama.
I'm proud of all my roots. African included. I don't exclude any part of my background as I am a melting pot and proud of that. Brother Home team, First of all I want to say that I am a fan of your series, "A Closer Look". I always learn something new from watching your series. But this one completely blew me away. I took a College course at Hunter College in NYC years ago on the history of Puerto Rico and almost none of the information you shared in the video was covered in the course. There was no mention of the Libertos or that Bomba was from decendents of slaves from Ghana and that Plena was introduced to Puerto Rico from people of the English speaking Caribbean. Thank you for bringing this to light. Keep up the good work my brother.
Yuki BabaYaga satire comedy is use to degrade blks by playing a dumb and stupid image for the racist system. It’s self evident. All European culture practice racism to some degree. This is extreme.
Puerto Rico has over 10 shows that practice blackface and they have a kkk headquarters on the island. It doesn’t take that much research to find out that Puerto Ricans practice blackface. European including French, portugueses, Spanish culture came from the caves like homosexuality, diseases, and from caucas mountains. They couldn’t see each other bc there was no sun light. Institution in Australia did to research on white people. Now in 2020 Puerto Rican practice blackface on public tv. Do your research.
Puerto Rico is responsible and dominant for 2 of the top 5 music genres in the world that descend from the mother land Africa and people wonder where the pride comes from. That’s not to mention the European and Native culture/influence and we embrace them all as one people.🇵🇷

Salsa and merengue are other styles of music we've embraced. I lived and went to schools both in the USA and Puerto Rico. Our three culture is very much alive on the island Spanish, African and also our Taino culture.
Guiro is a Taino indian instrument. Very beautiful sound and the drums are african

Peace bro.
manaka muhammad I m African and unfortunately, the vast majority of us just don’t understand or know what happened to our brothers, sisters, cousins, parents when they got on those ships towards the new world. It’s movie like this that’s important to teach a valuable lesson that our African chiefs were wrong, slavemasters were wrong, the institution of slavery was wrong, and the Europeans powers that allow slavery to exist were wrong! Let’s be clear on these facts that 99% of Africans today had nothing to do with the slave trade and let’s be clear that the vast majority of white people had nothing to do with slavery. The problem that exist as of 2021 is the fact that ethnocentrism, racism, tribalism, prejudices, discrimination and hate that’s part of human nature, must be minimized by one towards other people, for there are people out there who have fallen victims to these human ills...making it difficult for them to put ENOUGH bread and butter on the table for them and their family members. The great news here is that we all have the power as individuals to change the world around us, to treat the next person with empathy --to treat others the way you will want to be treated, regardless of your social-economic status . In a nutshell, be kind and treat others with decency, while giving other people an opportunity to climb the economic ladder of life, in today’s society. Thank you.
He is the cause for any inferiority complex or racism that exists there today really. Before, it didnt seem Dominicans thought about themselves racially.

Merengue has never been confused with salsa. The percussion rhythm is completely different.

There are two different kinds of Puerto Rican. The kind who embrace their African Heritage and the kind who claim white on the Census.
Some of us can't claim our African heritage when writing on the Census, doesn't mean we don't try to learn about it and claim the rest of our culture 😔 I was born with super pale skin. To check a different box in America would be considered a lie.
@@erinlaboricua no it wouldn’t.. you dnt have to say you’re white just because your skin is pale
Growing up my great grandma told us stories of where we came from, I still do that with my grandkids
@@ladymsthing6056 a person can have both let's say his father is Caribbean and his mother is African American from hundreds of years of being in America with ancestors that where formerly enslaved.

Reggaeton was not invented in Puerto Rico, it was made worldwide there, the origins of reggaeton come from afro Jamaican immigrants that started making music in Panama, the first guy to ever record a song on a Reggaeton beat is called Nando Boom and he's still alive. We gotta give credit where credit is due.
It really started in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 but they took it to a higher level in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 n The DR 🇩🇴
Reggie was not invented in PR, Reggueton was. Reggueton is a mixture of genres and is funny you say it, because the person who called that genre reggueton for the first time is arguably the biggest artist in that genre: Daddy Yankee
Nando Boom was still another arm of the reggue music. Not reggueton
@@Neighbor_ yes but the first Spanish song on a Reggaeton beat was still his, then other Panamanians did it.waaay before Ricans ever did it
First, he never gave a name to nothing. Second, he was a one hit wonder that wasn't heard much after that.
I’m African residing in the Bronx where I have met a lot of Peutorican’s who are very proud of their African heritage
This is very interesting. I’m Black living in America but even I know that other Latinos in Central and South America consider Puerto Rican’s, Dominicanos , Cubanos, & Mexicanos as the “ni*gas” of Latin America.
Pero if you go travel to Nicaragua , El Salvador, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Peru I’ve found deep African roots there as well.
STOP DISCRIMINATION
todos los latinos somos una mezcla de americanos, africanos y europeos.
excepto los gringos y los canadienses. esos son casi puros, o africanos, o europeos.
As a Rican LIVING in PR, no one says were Spanish we say Puerto Rican. 2) Yes there is racism here but the Black PRicans here are extremely proud of their African roots and it's celebrated as are Taino roots are and Spanish (Spain) No one in the Carribean calls themselves Spanish like in the US. Its the equivalent of the people in the US calling themselves English cause they speak the language
Yes I hate when my mom refers to Boricuas as "Spanish!" It irritates me bc we are not Spaniah, we are Borikin!
I haven seen any Latinos in the USA referring to themselves as being Spanish. Mexicans say they are Mexicans. Dominicans Dominicans, Puerto Ricans Puerto Ricans. As a cultural group we all call ourselves Latinos.
Brother Home team,
First of all I want to say that I am a fan of your series, "A Closer Look".
LOVE.THIS.VID. Please do one on the small group of Jamaicans that emigrated to Panama to build the canal
This is where the origins of Reggaeton come from Panama( No offense to Puerto Rico) but, that’s the truth & The Puerto Rican’s know the truth
@@dwaynerichburg1706 yes buddy we know the true we damn well know it was PANAMA saludos de 🇵🇷🗽, la atrevida, el general, y muchos mas👍💚
St. Lucians too, in fact ppl from many islands migrated for work in Panama during the construction.
I live in San Juan, PR. They practice blackface for comedy on t.v.. The system of white supremacy is refining strong out here.
Wow. Smh.
There brainwashed
Yuki BabaYaga it’s still going on in 2020.

I’m a black Puerto Rican both parents born on the island! I love ❤️ my blackness 🇵🇷✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
Puerto Rico is responsible and dominant for 2 of the top 5 music genres in the world that descend from the mother land Africa and people wonder where the pride comes from. That’s not to mention the European and Native culture/influence and we embrace them all as one people.🇵🇷
Wow, this is excellent knowledge my brother, thank you.
Bomba is a African style rhythm dance is the relationship between the drummer and of the dancer so instead of the dancer going to the rhythm of the drums the drummer has to follow the rhythm of the dancer . also this dance was performed every night it was a way for the tainos and the Africans to communicate. We use this dance for many things
West Africans were also with Captain Cooke on his last Hawaiian voyage although the Giant men spoken of refer to East Africans from Socotra. Check it out. Knowing your history means you never feel out of place.
