I live in NSW Australia and I vividly remember this case. It was so tragic and I have always felt sad for the father of the family. My grandparents lived not too far from where these murders took place and I can't help but think of how ordinary the streets and the people are, but STILL something horribly violent can occur right next door to you! Matthew should at least have the decency to admit to his crimes and explain to his father why he killed his mother, brother, and sister. I would hate to be Mathew's father because no parent wants to believe that their beloved child is capable of committing such brutality against their own flesh and blood! I understand that Mathew is now 46 years old and is likely a different man from the 18 year old boy who committed such a heinous crime, but still I would NOT like my own daughters to be involved with someone who did such a thing, regardless of how long ago. I hope that he stays out of trouble but violent tendencies can manifest quickly if the individual is provoked. I just hope that the Parole Board did the right thing! We'll have to wait and see! Thanks CF for another brilliant episode. Its appreciated!
I went to high school with a chuck whose last name was Sharky 😂 I didn't realize it was her last name I assumed it was a nickname until I started having other classes besides gym with her.
The son was violent towards the mother and the father let him get away with it? I have a stepson that used to live with us, his father kicked him out when he was 18 because he was selling marijuana out of our house. We only had a couple of rules, no drugs in the house, no weapons and no violence and he broke the first two and was warned, when we discovered on christmas eve he was selling from our house his father gave him 4 weeks to move out. If he had behaved violently towards me or anyone in our family his father would have kicked his a**, kicked him out and never let him back in. The father in this case failed his whole family.
Hello from Texas! I was going to wait and listen to this during a morning walk at a nearby park, but i woke up to a drizzly, wet and humid Saturday. So now im laying cozy and warm in my bed with my cat❤
Unless you've ever had a loved one do something terrible, you'll never understand being in the position of both realizing they did it & loving them anyway. Matthew De Gruchy's father is neither deluded nor stupid. He lost everyone he loved in one terrible act, including his eldest son. I cannot imagine living with that kind of pain.
The love you have for your child is stronger than any other love you can have. I always see comments about parents standing by their kid's side after a crime and the public scrutinizing them for it. We tell our children that theres nothing they can do to make us stop loving them. We are supposed to mean that. No one ever thinks their child would harm another, much less this. I can't imagine going through this. The anger and pain would be unbearable and beyond comprehension. I dont have judgment for his dad. I never want to know what he has been through. I dont think I could continue.
I don't recall all the details, but there's a doc about two parents whose son murdered his sister, their daughter obviously, but they still have a relationship with him and visit him in prison regularly. There was no question of his guilt or anything, he confessed, and it was violent. There was a scene where they get to throw a party for him in prison. Honestly, even though I felt for them, it made me sick. I get where you're coming from, but as a parent myself, I think that kid would be dead to me forever. It's one of a very few things that's just unforgivable.
I don't believe he thought his son did it till he had to sit so long with the detective such a long time after. I really think he had some soul searching that brought on his need to discuss it with the detective and then had to reassess what he believed. That must be devastating to the poor man
A neighbor and friend of mine has a son who murdered his fiancé, her 13 yo son, and tried to murder her two daughters. My neighbor was a broken woman. She adored her son but it was very hard for her to deal with. She knew he did it but she had a hard time coming to terms with that. I felt so sorry for her. I can't imagine what that is like. But I do know that if it was me, I would still love my son, too. There are more victims of a murder than just those who are dead. 😢
In keeping with this new geographical tradition, I’m listening to the best true crime channel on youtube here in Los Angeles, trying to take my mind off the upcoming election. I already voted and now all I can do is wait and hope (while acid eats away at my insides)
Thanks for covering a true crime incident that I’d never heard of before. This was an interesting one. Seemingly no motive or reason for the killer except…psychopathy?
I just don't understand why. Without the note that showed it was premeditated, I would have assumed it was a crime of passion: He argued a lot with his mother and killed her in one of those heated arguments. Then he panicked and murdered his siblings to cover his tracks. That makes sense to me. I just don't understand the motivation here.
I know what you mean i was attacked by an ex i was injured really badly then got him off and remained with him another 10years i did the right thing at the time for me forgiveness is not an issue and i eventually left and met an amazing person who i didn't realise was possible but I don't regret anything in my life anymore I am truly blessed to be here we all are ❤ love to you all 💟 everyone who needs love❤🙏🕊️
It's shocking someone like this could ever be released. His character won't change. He gets a second chance but his siblings didn't even get to start life. He thought he had the right to take it away. My brother is just like this. It's scary that humans like this exist. We are way too soft in Australia on criminals but so harsh on ordinary citizens for parking, speeding and minor drug offensives like weed. It's ridiculous. Tax crimes get more time than child killers!
I feel very bad for the father. I understand his refusal to consider his son guilty, and why he might have finally changed his mind. What a terrible thing to go through. It's also scary to think that Matthew is walking around free.

It's good they called it the boot and not trunk. This podcast uses the American term for things sometimes which is so annoying when it's an Australian production
How strongly could one fight their offspring, if they'd ever become homicidal (patricidal)? Would you be able to manifest lethal force against your own child, if they were attempting to 'cide' you? What a terrible situation.
I'm De Gruchy what happened is that the Nazi's moved in on top of us and started to live our life's. We were tortured by Nazi's in concentration camps. I still have a Nazi who sit with the papers from Jersey channel island that Nazi's took when they invaded our personal private lives.
God that poor father, losing not only his entire family, but having to live the rest of his life knowing his son is the one who did it. I have no doubt he was a *great* man, and may have even been abusive, but that's an extensive, unrecoverable, psychological trauma I wouldn't wish on anyone
Absolutely nothing in this documentary even slightly hinted that Matthew's father was abusive so why would you even assert an unfounded "possibility" that it could have been the case? That kind of talk is slander and inexcusable. Comments should be based on fact and not "maybes". This is a human being's life, character and reputation you are playing fast and loose with.
@@lisas8244 I said it as a qualifier to help express how horrific what he's going through is. Also I find it hard to believe Matthew didn't get fucked up somehow, and abuse is typically how that happens. I know it wasn't mentioned however is a frequent problem in criminals childhoods. As a finale, I'm not playing fast and loose. Do you understand that I'm saying even if he was abusive he's still a poor man? That should say how strongly I feel he suffered as a result of his sons actions.
@@Aryasvitkona Speculation should not enter into discussions when people's lives, feelings and reputations are at stake. A family member may very well watch this video and suffer because of what you threw out there. Apparently, you are not aware that some children can be born bad seeds, develop no conscience and be void of any attachment to their parents or siblings, have complete lack of compassion for others and they are considered sociopaths by psychologists and psychiatrists. The other siblings of children like this are completely normal and their brother or sister is an aberration. Matthew was not mad at his father. He was the only one whose life he spared. Some people refuse to accept there are children like this who were in fact not abused to make them the way they are. They are bent on blaming the parents because the thought of a child randomly being born without a conscience is too frightening for them to consider. It means that it could happen to any parents no matter how supportive and loving they are which, in turn, means it could happen to them. It's much easier to arbitrarily label the parents as unsupportive or abusive so they can sleep at night, knowing they are wonderful parents and it could never happen to THEIR family.
