The dealers were selling a commodity at a price the market would support. If there's blame to be laid beyond the idiotic, uneducated American consumer - then it should be laid at the feet of the Federal Government and the Federal Reserve who enabled this type of behavior with absolutely terrible monetary policy - basically dropping cash from helicopters - and led to a glut of demand. It resulted in the catastrophic inflation we are still experiencing and a lack of supply on dealer lots which caused prices to rise. Go discover what a supply/demand curve is. Then go push the demand up (due to terrible monetary policy) and this is the result. To summarize: Anytime the government thinks it can mess with the economy, it turns into a disaster.

Yup! It's not a matter of what I *can* afford....It's a matter of what I am willing to *pay* per month, if I am financing. Anyone who pays more than about %10 of monthly takehome on a depreciating asset, like a motor vehicle, is stupid. What I can *afford* and what I am *willing* to pay, are 2 different things.

$70,000 + Trucks won't save Ford, the banks are pulling back, people are flat played out and Ford quality sucks. Take the electronics out of them put the money into quality engines, transmissions and rear ends. Build them Tough again, not pretty. It's not about education for EV's. They are not practical, right now - when people are supposed to buy them. Lack of range, no charging stations, lack of electrical infrastructure, high prices and crap quality. Then there's the fire risks. I've been driving 50 years, never had a vehicle fire - sure, I've seen them. A few.

    • @secondarydevice1767

Did anyone ever stop to think there might be a damn *reason* few ICE cars had a 300mi+ range when gas only weighs 6 lbs/gallon?

I was in a Ford dealership today, not one of the 20 employees I saw even acknowledged me and I eventually walked out after looking at their way overpriced trucks. They are still trying to charge pandemic prices today, a 58k sticker price vehicle they were selling for 68k with dealer mark up. They had a truck for 132k, that is absolutely insane. The lot was full of trucks, a lot of trucks, I know they can't be selling, they are just sitting there at those prices. You can go for all the big margin cars you want, and avoid the more affordable low margin cars, but you get no margin if they are not selling, you get bankruptcy instead, I think that's where their going if they don't get their heads out of their butts and start looking at the reality that is punching them in the face right now. By the way this is exactly what happened in the 1970s, they stopped making cars people wanted, their quality was garbage, they kept pushing big expensive gas guzzling cars, and the Japanese came in and wiped the floor with them. It's amazing how the people in charge of these big companies are some of the most incompetent people in the entire company.

I owned two of those, a 1978 F-150 and a 1986 F-250 and both were really good. My current truck is a 2006 F-150 and it has low miles and runs like a Swiss
watch. OK, so much for the history. Now it's more about what they have done lately and what I am seeing there is one screw-up after another. Their warranty

General Motors vehicles are junk too all the new ones have problems with fuel pump modules, and when the car or the truck dies in the middle of the road, you cannot shift the shifter into neutral so if you run out of gas at a stoplight, you can't push the car off the road or hook a chain or strap to it to move it you're only choices to hire a tow truck to come pick it up and take it to a GM dealer because only they have the tool necessary to put it into neutral. I've been told that that's quite a process you have to go into the engine compartment and take off a bunch of stuff just to get to it. I'm sure people are unaware of this problem. It had 5 sets of tires on it because the alignment kept going out on it and the tires would wear out prematurely. To top it off, the dealership repair shops treated me as if I was the problem. They are selling enough. Here's the problem.. Ford sells like 300,000 tucks per quarter.. so yeah, they could discount prices and sell 400,000 per quarter but they'd have to discount ALL 400,000 units including the 300,000 they would have sold anyway without lowering prices.. its just not worth it. They are making more money by selling at a higher margin but lower volume. Ford will never cut prices until the sales volume drops dramatically.

I'll keep running my 20yr old cars. Just found a really nice '04 Lesabre with 109k and virtually zero rust for $2500. Put $500 in and I am set for a while. I do most of my own work though, so it's much easier to survive in that era. I could not in good conscience spend these amounts on cars. Not knocking anyone that does.

Definitely should have come out with a Maverick EV instead of an F150. EVs make good commuters. Just bought a 2024 F150 last weekend. I contacted over 20 dealers. I told them all: I will not pay for ANY dealer add ons. If you have add ons, forget it. Secondly, I expect a hefty discount. And this is what I got. $71,xxx MSRP (Lariat), for $61,xxx. It had been on their lot for 4 months, so they were committed to moving it. The education is not needed for the customers, they need to educate their senior managers making these bonehead moves. Also need to make more plug in hybrids. Good catch on no stock buy backs. If Ford thought their stock was great, they would be buying back stock right now. It's telling they say they have better uses for their capital.
