  • We've been getting these questions a lot lately: What will a diesel conversion cost, and can you do the diesel swap?
    Why it's $10k:
    - 6BT is ~$2000 + $1500 for basic rebuild (head, pistons, rings & bearings).
    - 4BT is ~$3500 + $1500 for basic rebuild (head, pistons, rings & bearings).
    - Adapter plate, flywheel and starter is ~$2000.
    - Shift controller is ~$600. kit.com/debossg...
    - Alignment fluids, fittings, hoses, machining is ~$500.
    - DG shop rate is $65/hr at an estimate of 70 hours.
    - Don't forget shipping + taxes!

Funny that I'm watching this considering I'm about to swap a John Deere 4045T into my 2005 F150. It's also getting a G56 manual and axles and suspension from an F350. Transmission and transfer case been freshly rebuilt, motor is brand new and has some extra parts to put some pep in her step, axles also rebuilt. Tearing the truck apart completely and rebuilding everything so every square inch of the truck will be in pristine condition.

Thanks for sitting down and talking through the real world complications of this kind of project. I think almost anybody that's a car guy is hot and bothered over 4BT swaps. I sure am! But I know I'll never have the resources to accomplish it. But I love these videos and I love watching and learning. Who knows, maybe getting to see how it's done will help me learn down the road and do something cool too.

It can also affect your weight so expect suspension or brake changes if your vehicles motor weighs less than your new one. Last thing you want is to hit the brakes and the vehicle dips the wrong way.

Hey Mr.Deboss so I Have a 98 K1500 5.7 Vortec Extended Cab 3 door Silverado I recently Purchased it from a older Gentleman who had bought it brand new and had fallen ill and needed the money. The engine and tranny are all original. He had kept it in tip top shape with Transmission Fluid Flushes and Filter changes every 35-40k miles and Oil changes every 2500 Miles Wix and Kn filters were his go too he cleaned it up and sprayed off the snow in the wintertime so there isn’t a single spot of rust on the fenders as most fall victim too aswell as the vehicle does not burn a single drop of oil and has had all the gaskets replaced routinely. My question is I’m looking at doing a 6.5 or 6.2 Detroit Diesel swap or possibly buying a baby duramax crate engine and or just installing a 6.6 or possibly even a 5.9 or smaller cummins engine into it I just would like to get your thoughts on it!

    • @OnlyTheEd
      @OnlyTheEd 8 років тому

Your main areas (probably) will be the electrical connections and the driveshaft changes/modification. (Please note Johnson's Gee-rage and "Todd Booke's Bronco swap).......His has the 4BT and a 5 speed (m5odr2, I think).....Jimmy (Johnson's Gee-rage) has a 1982 F150 4BT with the m5odr2....he's been building it for perhaps 2 years. His cash outlay has topped $6K, because he's had some issues and other modifications/ additions. He has done most of his own build except the driveshaft modification, and had help rebuilding the m5odr2. Otherwise, Rich is your man.....The $$$ I speak of is US, of course....Canadian is a different exchange rate. Oh yeah.....also the engine mounts/pads/whatever are going to cause grief.......And oil pan location, maybe....

Unfortunately, these Toyota swaps aren't as plug and play as you would think, especially if it has electronics. I found that the wiring harness for the diesel is for a right hand drive truck, so it has to be rebuilt. Also, the gauges don't transfer either, from what I have found. Look up dieseltoys on forums. You will find pretty much everything you will need from those guys. I haven't done the swap yet, so I all I know is what I have read. I could be wrong though. I do know that you would be better off with a half cut which will have everything you will need.

In the US (not Canada) it is illegal to swap a diesel into a vehicle that was never produced as a diesel. That being said that is a federal crime, and most states do not care. The vehicle should pass state inspections most of the time. The only time you will have any issue is if you go to a national park, or US facility where federal law enforcement present, and mainly if they decide to inspect your vehicle. Which if they do, you will be arrested, charged with a felony, your vehicle will be impounded, and most likely destroyed ASAP!

The 8.1 in the 03 is getting some major miles on it, close to 200k miles, not kilos. Been thinking about doing the swap because the 8.1 doesn't have much after market support for goodies. I would like to keep the Allison, but not sure about mounting it to the cummins, if it fits or someone makes an adapter for it, it's a bitch'n trany.

Lily Smith : The GM gas 8.1L is/was a terrible fuel pig. A Cummins turbo diesel 5.9L or 6.7L would be a huge improvement, and worthwhile swap so long as the truck is still decent. Keeping the Allison is not that difficult, you'll just have to get a machine shop fabricate an adapter plate for the bell housing. Seems like there may also be something available from the medium-duty truck market, but I don't know for sure.

Sales tax is $0.07. So, $10700.
    That's 4280 gallons.
I got an 18 gallon tank.
My 5.0 averages around 12 mpg.
I know that's shitty... but, ANYWAYS...
That ends up being 54688.89 miles.
Diesel `round here is like $3.30.
    $59.4/ tank
    30 mpg = 540 mi/tank
    $10700 = 3242.42 tank fulls.
    3242.42*30 = 97272.73 miles
So the gasser is 0.5622222336448599 as good as the diesel.
It pays for itself in about a year or so.

so after 65k miles you start saving money

Keep in mind you can also benefit from the reliability and extra power. Really it’s a swap you do just because you want a cummins. It’s really hard to justify.

I did it in my Durango. I went from 14mpg to 30mpg. In 100k miles I saved $8k in fuel. The swap cost me under $5k, for a savings of 3k. But since I sold the leftover Durango parts and the box truck the Cummins came out of, I actually saved much more. Another factor is that in 100k miles all I did for service was engine oil and fuel filters every 10k miles, and changed the oversized air filter once. If I was still running the 5.9 gas engine I would have had to do plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and other parts more than once in that mileage. Bonus? The Cummins pulled a trailer much better than the 5.9 ever did!

Idk man, that's a lot of money. Jeeps, Mercedes cars, vw cars, and of course most trucks can come from the factory with a diesel engine.
You can buy 3 of them used for 10 grand.

@@fazekookaburra7316 But they are already in a vehicle. His point wasn't that they are as good, just that the investment may not make economic sense. (Which is also Rich's point).
The big downfall of a swap is that you're betting a lot on the life of the rest of the vehicle. A Cummins swap is cool - until the rest of the truck is rusted to hell, totalled in a crash, needs a transmission rebuild, etc. At that point, sure, your engine is probably still running great. But all the money you spent putting it in is jam yesterday because now you have to put it in another vehicle. What then? Maybe most of your adapter "kit" - and all the other modifications - can come with, if you find a similar enough vehicle to put it in. But you still have to put in the work (or pay someone) to yank it and install it in the next vehicle. Unless you can find one that hasn't been in the salt, you're talking about something that's just as likely to be a rustbucket. There are also legal issues with putting the really good Cummins motors (12-valve) into newer chassis. You *can* get a new Cummins crate motor, the 2.8, which is awesome and apparently emissions-ready for some places - but the engine itself will cost you the better part of ten grand.
"Saving money" this way is a rich man's hobby unless you do the work yourself and choose your projects wisely.

Where would one begin to look for a donor Cummins to replace a 2010 6.4? I just put $4,000 worth of work in to my truck hoping that it would fix my regens every hundred km's and within 150kms of a new DPF, it did a regen on me again. Not the regular "drive to clean filter" followed by "cleaning exhaust filter" for the duration but instead just flashed "cleaning exhaust filter for a moment" but started using fuel like a pig and it was confirmed by the superheated exhaust when I parked it. Also discovered that 4 and 8 have slightly low compression. Not sure what to expect or plan, but I don't have any money in to the engine itself yet. It was suggested that I have the PCM flashed to see if it stops unnecessary regens but I'm starting to look at worst case scenarios and backup plans. A Cummins seems to be the better of the expensive routes...

Truck model but it varies by weight. Under 3800 kilos is a visual (believe it or not) in Ontario, If its over, you can go for a heavy duty test (which is $145) but then it can be done as heavy duty. Putting a diesel in something that used to be gas, has to pass the odb.

Fairly mechanically inclined but not traditionally trained Brand new to trucks intermediate experience with small engines (sleds) and some experience with field repairs on heavy equipment.
