Pears make a great substitute for sugar in cakes and sweet breads. They have not been available in store cans for almost 2 years. That's why I started canning apples in chunks. You're very privileged if you have access to a pear tree. I graduated college when I was 55. My daughter and I attended the same college at the same time. I stopped peeling apples years ago when I make apple pies. It makes no difference in the flavor and the peels don't stick to the roof of the mouth. I don't peel any fruit when I waterbath can.
Thank you so much for sharing this! It is so helpful. I love that you were so honest with the turkey roaster. I really enjoy watching your canning adventures. I remember watching my grandma can peaches and apricots when I was a kid but she passed away before I was old enough to learn from her. Watching you makes me feel much more comfortable canning on my own.♥️
The reason why USDA doesn't like you canning with the skins on is because if there is harmful bacteria or fungi it would be between the skin and the flesh, making the canning process ineffective in killing all of that bacteria or fungi. This is why they recommend cooking in advance and/or peeling everything. There are other anaerobic (thriving without oxygen) bacteria besides botulism that can make one sick, as well. It's been too long for me to remember them, but if you get a microbiology textbook, it should be an easy find.
How much fun for you ladies! I have to tell a story of my pears this summer. I had never done pears, so I dutifully washed, peeled and cored. They were gorgeous white Bartletts. I put them in the pressure canner, so white! When they were done, I pulled them out and thought what happened?! The pears and juice were all the lovely color of hot pink. I told them I didn't include red hots with them and asked why they changed. Looked it up online and during their big growth in August, if it's really hot and arid, pears will turn pink in the canning process. They are so pretty and delicious, I almost hate to eat them. But they gave it their all! I still laugh at the result. Thanks for all you do! You've really helped my confidence!
My pear tree gave us an abundance of pears this year and I canned pears for the first time. I promised myself to never can pears again(what a chore)...well after this lesson I will now actually look forward to it next year.
Ditto! Now I won’t bother the few neighbors I know that can and offer them All the rest of the pears! I Love to share with them, but I was giving all the rest away this year as we have 4 loaded trees. Now I will can a batch for us as well and still have plenty to share. Thank you Sweet Sisters!
Hahahahaha . I always watch you around 1:30AM hubby asleep beside me, your sister floats in and I’m laughing out loud, who do I blame if he wakes up. Hilarious Ladies,
I use terry wristbands when processing juicy foods. Shove them in the washer when you’re done. I hated the juice running down my arms! Got mine from Amazon 😊
I loved this video. Years ago when my children were complaining about peeling 300# of pears, I told them that if they would eat canned pears with the peels on without complaining, they wouldn't have to peel ever again. Thus husband and children and myself have never eaten a peeled pear again and I've canned many hundreds of pounds of pears over the years.
You can use pear leftovers, and skins if you decide to peal them, to make a lovely pear vinegar. It's wonderful for salads with blue cheeses. Oh, and when it comes to canning food in jars my favourite trick is to cover the jar with thick kitchen cling film after filling it than putting the lid and cutting excess. Science I started doing this decades ago not even one of my preserves went bad.
Thank you both so much! I read some of the comments that people use the pears as sweeteners for cakes, etc. I made a ton of roasted pear sauce for our grandbabies and canned it but removing the peelings just about killed me. I will can the rest of my tree after this video and am Thankful to have your video to guide me as I will be leaving the scrubbed peels on the pears! Thank you and May God Bless You Both!
Let me just say this, both you and Camille look fabulous! I had canned pears and peaches, and I was going to make a peach cobbler. However, my husband opened up the pears. So I ended up making a pear cobbler and it was absolutely delicious. Thanks for sharing ladies!
I have to do this and use the scraps for pear vinegar. I love doing small paint batches in my instant pot canner. Thanks for your channel. I've bought so many of your products you suggest and or use.
It was delightful seeing the two of you in the kitchen having fun, despite the drawbacks. And to think that I was thrilled to read that nectarines didn't have to be peeled when canned! I have put pears on my list! I doubt I'll ever see $.89/pound, though. Thank you for sharing your insights and especially the info on the roaster not getting up to temp. Jim, I hope at least one of those jars has your name on it. Great camera work on capturing those bubbles.
Pears had been the only successful harvest that year here. We peel them with a potato peeler. If you're using gloves fold the cuffs so the juice won't run over your arms. It's also good if you're cleaning windows or the oven. We canned a mix of pear slices and plums in elderberry-water-sugar sauce.
Such a special presentation. I always love seeing sisters together. We have a Bartlett pear tree & have never canned them. Will have to give-it-a-try. So enjoyed the video.
I can’t believe Pam is 79 and her sister in her 70’s too! Oh my, both ladies look fantastic!! I would never have guessed them to be in their 70’s.. I hope I look that good when I get there! Great video ladies, thank you!
I love watching the two of you working together 🥰. My mom always left the pear skins on, too. I haven’t made pears, ever, but I do love them. Maybe I’ll try them next year when fresh pears are back in season here. Thx for your wonderful videos! 🥰
I rely a lot on my Extension Agent to answer those unique questions. She always provides additional information, answering questions I didn’t even know to ask.
You two are both so inspiring! I’ve been a fan of your channel for a while now. You taught me so many new knowledge. I feel so fortunate to come across your channel! Thank you, Pam ❤
Awww. I love this. It's always so special to do things with your sister. What a wonderful learning experience, peared (get it? 😂) with some quality sister time.
We LOVE homemade canned pears AND pear sauce. We don't like the skins and make the efforts. But the skin and core cooked down in water make excellent pear juice.
Love caramelized pear butter. Yes, very thing gets sticky but when you sitting down with tea or coffee with the pear butter on toast! It makes a sticky mess ok with!
I have to say I just adore your show. When I can I watch to see how the professional does before I begin. I trust all of my canning by watching you. Thank you for teaching us.
I dehydrate pears with skins on, last year planted the Crimson pear, got one pear this year, hopefully more next year. When I get enough will try to can.
I grew up with three brothers and unfortunately I lost my youngest and most favorite 37 years ago and my two remaining brothers gave me the most loving and caring sisters in law . Seeing you two together reminds me of the wonderful relationship between siblings by blood and choice.
This is so timely. I received a box of pears in this months Azure Standard order on Wednesday. Im so glad to know that they don't have to be peeled, I had been wondering about that.
Great video how fun. My sister visited me during our pear harvest and she helped me can 40 quarts of pears in light syrup and it was so much fun to have her help in the kitchen.
Fascinating. I have been waterbath canning in my 28 qt turkey roaster for decades. But I have never tried steam canning in it. My brand is Hamilton Beach. I do have to crank it up to 450* to get the rolling boil but it does get there in about 20 minutes. I usually turn it down to about 375-400* depending on the number of pints to maintain the boil over the top of jars. I quit peeling fruit 7 or 8 years ago, when I had a badly sprained ankle. A friend brought me 2 5gallon buckets of fruit from her trees. The crimson pears look fabulous.
Like most crock pots, electric Roasters do not have heating elements on the bottom........only around the sides. Therefore, they would not be good for steam canning. However, they would be fine for waterbath canning
I love the idea of leaving skins on the pears! I quit canning pears because peeling was such a pain. And the little coring gizmo - what a clever tool. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving.
My mother in law taught me how to can pears from her pear tree. We also made spiced pear honey jam. We always left the peel on. USDA doesn’t know everything. Thanks for taking the risk.

Super. Thank you. Your sister is delightful! Off topic QUESTION: will you please do a video about Apeal? Not all grocery chains (including WinCo) will let us know whether it’s been used or not. I don’t like the idea of some thing extra I don’t understand being added to my products. Thank you Pam and Jim
So I’m inspired by your degree story. My second degree is a teaching certificate just shy of my masters. Couldn’t finish but you’re inspiring me to look into finishing.

I’ve only canned pears twice and both times left the skins on as that’s how I was shown. They are perfectly fine and delicious! Glad you enjoyed them! I’m not in US so didn’t realise they were recommended to be peeled!
Pears are sweet, sisters are even sweeter. Leaving the peels on is something I may try for myself. Thank you ladies.
88 cents a lb. That's the universe making sure you show us your recipe 😜. Love y'all 😍
It was wonderful to see sisters sharing their time and enjoying themselves. Thank you Ladies!
Glad you enjoyed it! Jim
Pears make a great substitute for sugar in cakes and sweet breads. They have not been available in store cans for almost 2 years. That's why I started canning apples in chunks. You're very privileged if you have access to a pear tree.

Interesting
Thanks
I called my extension office and they said it was just aesthetics with or without the skins left on the pears. So it is just a matter of choice 🙂
Sister’s are so special- mine is gone and miss her each and every day! Ya’ll are so cute!
Thanks! We are sorry to hear about your sister. Pam treasures her relationships with her sisters. Jim
Thank you so much for sharing this! It is so helpful. I love that you were so honest with the turkey roaster. I really enjoy watching your canning adventures. It's lovely to see both of you together .

Congratulations to your sister! An inspiration!!
Absolutely!! Thank you.
It’s a pleasure to see how both of you enjoy each other’s company. Thank you for sharing this video. I can’t wait to try it.
Hahahahaha . I always watch you around 1:30AM hubby asleep beside me, your sister floats in and I’m laughing out loud, who do I blame if he wakes up. Hilarious Ladies,
Yes, they get along together very well. The two sisters are the oldest of their nine siblings and Pam is the first born. Jim
Sweet sisters ❤
I use terry wristbands when processing juicy foods. Shove them in the washer when you’re done. I hated the juice running down my arms! Got mine from Amazon 😊
Wow, using the strawberry huller to core is a really wonderful idea 💡
I smiled all the way through the video! :-) What a delight to see sisters come together for a project like this. LOVED IT! Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations Camille! What a wonderful achievement.

Another fun and informative video! I love it when you include your sisters on videos. 😊 Thanks Jim for being such a great cameraman!
We thank you for your comments. Jim
What an inspiration!!! Thank you ladies. Sending a million of blessings!!
I love seeing family together doing projects! So great and a fantastic idea! ❤❤❤
I guess I will be looking for some pears when I go to WinCo tomorrow. Peeling the pears has been a giant deterrent to my canning pears for my shelves.
So wonderful to see you and your sister's get together and show all of us you're expertise on family and cooking 🤗
My daughter has a pear tree. She canned allot of pears.
Thank you both so much! I read some of the comments that people use the pears as sweeteners for cakes, etc. I made a ton of roasted pear sauce for our grandbabies and canned it but removing the peelings just about killed me. What fun it is to watch sister's work in the kitchen! Definitely trying this recipe 😊
I so admire both of you. Smart lady's.
Oh what I wouldn't give to have a sister to can with! BTW skin on so much healthier in terms of digestion.
Loveeee Winco. I love those red pears. Camille thank you.
Let me just say this, both you and Camille look fabulous! I had canned pears and peaches, and I was going to make a peach cobbler. However, my husband opened up the pears. So I ended up making a pear cobbler and it was absolutely delicious. Thanks for sharing ladies!
You are welcome. Jim
I have never done that when canning my pears. What a time saver! I add allspice berries and small pieces of cinnamon when I can my pears. 🍐
I have to do this and use the scraps for pear vinegar. I love doing small paint batches in my instant pot canner. Thanks for your channel. I've bought so many of your products you suggest and or use.
I throughly enjoyed watching the two of you and enjoyed learning about pears and leaving the skin on and steam canning…thanks a million.
Our pleasure! Jim
You are the best!!!! I never ever would have thought to keep the skins on or use a roaster for canning !!!!
It was delightful seeing the two of you in the kitchen having fun, despite the drawbacks. And to think that I was thrilled to read that nectarines didn't have to be peeled when canned! I have put pears on my list! I doubt I'll ever see $.89/pound, though.

Try adding candies to your syrups. Red hots( cinnamon imperials), jolly ranchers, any hard candy, that you like the flavor of.
Pears can have thick and raw skins, depending of the kind of pear, that might be the reason why they recommend peeling pears.
Great video! There’s nothing like sisters being together. I have four myself.
My sister and I can together all the time so I really enjoyed this video ❤
I love watching the two of you working together 🥰.
My mom always left the pear skins on, too. I haven’t made pears, ever, but I do love them. Maybe I’ll try them next year when fresh pears are back in season here. Thx for your wonderful videos! 🥰
I rely a lot on my Extension Agent to answer those unique questions. She always provides additional information, answering questions I didn’t even know to ask.
I keep skins on my nectarines. As long as they aren't too ripe the skins melt in your mouth. Wonderful to meet your sister.❤
Good to know! Thank you.
Bosc pears can beautifully with skins on, too.
This was such a nice collaboration with your sister. And so much fun!
I think so too!
You two are both so inspiring! I’ve been a fan of your channel for a while now. You taught me so many new knowledge. I feel so fortunate to come across your channel! Thank you, Pam ❤
I love this! Thank you for introducing us to your sister. It's so much fun to see the two of you together.

I love that Jim knows enough about canning that he asked, did you wash the rims. 😊
I have to say I just adore your show. When I can I watch to see how the professional does before I begin. I trust all of my canning by watching you. Thank you for teaching us.
Thank you!!! I canned pears with the peel on several years ago, and lost the recipe. So excited to have a recipe again!
This video is going to make some people’s head explode 🤯
Sounds like it was an interesting and tasty experiment.
I dehydrate pears with skins on, last year planted the Crimson pear, got one pear this year, hopefully more next year. When I get enough will try to can.
I have always left the skin on, an Amish lady showed me how many years ago. Also use a honey syrup
Pears are great with the peels on them.
I grew up with three brothers and unfortunately I lost my youngest and most favorite 37 years ago and my two remaining brothers gave me the most loving and caring sisters in law . Seeing you two together reminds me of the wonderful relationship between siblings by blood and choice.

Delightful episode!
just doing pears today.thank you for saving me so much time in peeling them
You both are superstars!
What a great video ! It makes me wish I had a sister to share things with.❤️
Thank you. Great info. Very encouraging. 😊
Great video how fun. My sister visited me during our pear harvest and she helped me can 40 quarts of pears in light syrup and it was so much fun to have her help in the kitchen.

I am following the Camille Guidelines. She's great!
Yum, looks great. Thank you for another great video. It was great to see Camille🎉.
Like most crock pots, electric Roasters do not have heating elements on the bottom........only around the sides. Therefore, they would not be good for steam canning. However, they would be fine for waterbath canning

Thanks! You have a Happy and Fulfilling Thanksgiving, too. Jim
My next batch is going to be skin-on!
You ❤❤2 are Amazing 😊Thank YOU both!
I learned years ago to take the skins off like peaches. You use olaytex gloves.
Such a delight all around. Thank you!
My mother in law taught me how to can pears from her pear tree. We also made spiced pear honey jam. We always left the peel on. USDA doesn’t know everything. Thanks for taking the risk.
The USDA has tested and safe recipes. Jim
@@RoseRedHomestead I understand you are sharing safety.
I love pears and do them whenever I can get them at a reasonable price, even though they're very messy. I watch Jessica from Three Rivers Homestead and she doesn't peel her pears but I've never been game but I'll give it a go after seeing you do it! Thank you both! 💜
No reason why not. Lets us know the results. Jim
Thank you for the great video ❤
Nice to see the two of you working together. Happy you decided against the turkey roaster. Sounded like a good idea but I was concerned it wouldn't reach the right temp. I LOVE canned pears. I will make this after Thanksgiving... Thanks so much...
Pears, my favorite fruit. One of the first thing I canned was pear honey. Delicious. That was 43 or 44 years ago.
When does the $0.88 sales price end? I can't find the price online and I will drive to Las Vegas to get them!!! THANK YOU, LOVELY SISTERS!!!
Called Winco...this is their every day price according to a clerk in the Midvale UT store. I could not get Las Vegas stores to answer! Thank you Sosters
Thanks for checking and letting us know. Jim
Sisters.... my fingers aeem to find the wrong keys on the keyboard. I'm in Honolulu for my last night of a 1 week vacation and I have watched you every day! My husband, 87 yr old mom, and I love you!
I don’t mind canning pears. I peel mine with a serrated peeler right into the jar with a little hot syrup already in it. I fill the jar with pears, then syrup, lid and ring and put it in the canner. Fill the canner and process. I also have a tool that is supposed to be used for clay sculpting. It has a handle and a pear shaped blade. With the skinny end you can cut the stem out and with the rounder end you can cut the core out, slick as a whistle!
Sounds great! Jim
Have you tried steam canning in your pressure cooker? I like to use my 23 qt Presto for this. I start my timer as soon as I get a steady vent of steam coming up (you never add the weight, because you're not trying to build pressure). It works perfectly, and you don't have to deal with a heavy pot of water.
Love watching how these pears were canned in the skin as I'm waiting on my two extra large sourdough loaves to brown up a little moreI.
Wish I could have seen this video a couple of weeks ago. I had some lovely organic pears from Harry and David and canned my first pears in a light syrup. So sweet and yummy.
The added 6" of steam rising above the pot 'test' is new to me. Good to know. Thx.
It was new to me as well! I love learning new things every day!!!

Well done to every-one.. Lochness Scottish Highlands..
So I’m inspired by your degree story. My second degree is a teaching certificate just shy of my masters. Couldn’t finish but you’re inspiring me to look into finishing.
That is awesome! Yes, return to school and finish your program. Hopefully, you have not been timed-out. Jim
both you ladies don't look a day over 30
🙂🌻
I’m so glad you changed your mind on steam canning in the roaster. I have 3 different brands of them and none of them boil hard enough for waterbath canning much less steam canning. Thanks so much for Camille doing this video with you. Congratulations on your degree! That is so amazing!

Awesome! We love pears & haven't seen them that cheap in yrs!
