If you dip your pears in boiling water, just like you do when processing tomatoes then place them in very cold or ice water, the skins will slip off easily. Pears are not easy to peel using a paring knife. I found this method useful when I had bushels of bartlett pears to can. Hope this helps.
I tried this trick and it didn’t work for me. It did make them a bit easier to peel but the skins didn’t slide off as I saw them do on a UA-cam video 😕
We used to can 1/2 pears like this. For desert. And pour a warm custard over them. The making of the custard was my 1st cooking “job” in the kitchen and I still make it for friends. 5 eggs + 1 yolk per quart of milk. Heat milk to steaming. While heating the milk I whisk the eggs and some sugar(just to get a head start on the sweetening), and a pinch of salt. “Temper” the eggs: dribble a little hot milk in while whisking, adding it all, little by little til you know the egg mix is already hot, then dump in the rest and cook over med-low to low, whisking all the while. It’ll kinda “foam” a little, right before it thickens up. I usually go til visibly thickening, around 180-190 degrees. It’ll thicken a lot more when cool. Adjust sugar and flavorings. I haven’t had it last more than a week cause I eat/drink it before then. You can freeze it too. Frozen custard. I do this with whole milk, but some heavy cream would prolly be killer😊 The whole deal only takes about 10-15 minutes.
I just finished up canning the last of my pears. Just did them plain, but next time I'm going to use the cinnamon sticks. Thank you so much for sharing! I'm old enough to be your momma, but have learned sooooo much from you! You are such an inspiration to me. Blessings to you and your family!! ❤
You find the best things at yard sales.... Your canner the dehydrater, the little hand pulled chopper fantastic finds! And I really want to tell you that you are a wonder woman and such an inspiration Thank you so much. God Bless
Your children are adorable and so respectful and helpful. I think television programming, video games, and the music of today are very detrimental to a child and build stress and anxiety. It teaches children to be quick to respond insteading of thinking things through. You are raising your children to be successful and self reliant. Wouldn't that be wonderful if all children had parents that had their children work with them in the everyday chores. I love your channel!
Canning pears for the first time today. Happy to hear you say 5mins. USDA says 20mins +10minss since I'm at 6000ft. That sounds like mush to me. Tried your 5mins. Thanks for all your wonderful videos and all your stories.
I needed this video. I have 4 boxes of pears waiting for me and need the motivation to get them done. Thanks for the inspiration! Your jars are beautiful!
Instead of cinnamon try tossing in a half vanilla bean cut open lengthwise... Also ginger and lime juice are fantastic... It takes a simple desert to the next level.
My Dad went by the Ball Blue Book. It says put the water an inch over the lids. Yes, many siphoned and some jars even broke the bottoms out of the jars. Thanks for giving us the facts!
I’m 1 of 10 siblings. Grew up on very large dairy farm in the 60’s -70’s. Totally love your videos with lots of memories including ‘ wacking’ the pigs to move’em. You are amazing and very intelligent! 😊 Thank you 🙏🏼
I appreciate this video so much! I have pears to work up today! I was so excited when I saw your video! I’ve learned so much from you, and I trust your methods. You make preserving so easy! Thanks again!😊Regina
This week I have canned white beans, 🫘 pintos, spaghetti sauce and today I’m canning more spaghetti sauce and pears. I’m a silent watcher most of the time but I looked up your recipe for the pears 🍐 😊
Such marvelous memories! Many younger people may not have experienced using only seasonal produce and canning the rest for winter, since so much is available year round at the store. We NEVER bought out of season produce. We canned summer fruit and ate it in the winter. We learned to enjoy food by the seasons and in many ways I still eat that way. I am almost 70. Pears are a good one to can in small batches. I remember my aunt would have 3 pears that were ripe. We would split one for supper and she would can the other 2 in a sauce pan after supper!
I love hearing your wind chimes while you're working! I'm working on pears this week, and you've given me motivation to finish them up today, so thank you for that. BTW, you have the prettiest smile!
I love watching you do your canning and talk about your mother and grandmother. You make me smile and then when you smacked the pig 🐖 to wait for the scapes, I laughed and laughed. 😅🤣😂
❤ Wow! You are definitely a multi-tasked woman! Whew! SO interesting the method of canning pears that you use… I pre-make my sugar water…4 cups water to 1 cup sugar…or even 5 to 1…depending on the sweetness of the fruit to be canned…and bring that to a boil…then put on lowest heat…I put 7 lids in a small pot with water covering them, bring to a boil for about 5 minutes… I process all of my fruit for 15 minutes…place them on a towel that covers a cutting board, and when I remove my processed jars, I then cover them with a flannel sheet, out of any draft, and leave them like that until the next day… If I make pear jam, then I add ground cinnamon to that… For canned crabapples, I do use cinnamon sticks…nice flavour… We canned cherries and apricots so far…much more to can… You are SO blessed to live where you do…to “eat off the land” where nothing has been tampered with! You are a most beautiful woman of Almighty God…You are SO blessed to have such a beautiful, precious family…your family is definitely a true-blue FAMILY…in a Godly way! God bless you…immeasurably! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nice, enjoyed your stories and followed your tutorial for canning pears 🍐 for the first time. I couldn’t stop laughing when you smacked the pig on the head 😂 You’re one busy mommy keep it up 👍🏼👍🏼❤️
You raise the rack and perch it on the rim for the first 5 minutes to allow a gradual cool down period. Then you move them to doubled towels on the counter for the next 12-24 hours.
Hahaha, Ruth Anne, your slapping that Pigs snout 🐽 just made me laugh to the point of choking on my cuppa tea. Thank you for all you show us. I love your families mantra for living. We’re a large family of 10 kids and I’m on the tail end of mothering where I only have 3 to go before I can sleep in again one day. At 60+, I hope I survive the next few years. 😅 I adore your clothes line also, in Oz the sun shines my helper and I rarely use the dryer except when the spiders are on the fly and often try to hitch a ride inside of our clothes. 10 minutes on heat and tumble usually renders them 🕷️ no longer dangerous. Again, thank Yu for the cheer up.
Yes I live in Aus as well. I love the fresh smell of line dried clothes. Also electricity is so much more than in the USA . My family live in Texas and enjoy cheaper electricity. I love Ruth Ann and her family. They bring such joy.
FYI: (Hope this helps) A little known fact about the pear is that it is one of the few fruits that does not ripen on the tree. The pear is harvested when it is mature, but not yet ripe, and, if left at room temperature, it slowly reaches a sweet and succulent maturity as it ripens from the inside out.
RuthAnn, how do you salt your butter ? What kind of salt do you use? When is it added? It's such a joy to be in the kitchen or garden with you and your family ❣️
Many years ago a very good friend of mine told me that I only need to prosses my fruit for five minutes; other wise your fruit goes all mushy! I'm glad to see that someone else does too! I always put a clove or two into my jars; it gives a really nice flavour! I may try a cinnamon stick this year!!!! You said; " just warm water? What about white grape Juice?☺
I like to add a twist of lemon rind to my pears. It gives such a nice flavor and I've wondered if it helps to keep the pears from oxidizing. Not sure about that, it's just my theory.
I garden totally organically too, mostly in raised beds, just home made compost. Sure you get bugs etc but a sink full of salt water takes care of cleaning leafy greens and good wash for apples plums and pears ❤
Love your story telling of your experience with family and in childhood with canning. I appreciated all the advice. Like a typical American I am working from a deficit of knowledge.
We make pear sauce also. We put cinnamon red hots candy instead of sugar, to taste. It gives the pears a cinnamony taste & makes the pear sauce pink or red (depending how many red hots you add to the pot). Beautiful for the holidays & tasty all year long! Loves this family & channel!
I love your animal videos. I’ll never see a pig as close up as your video of the piglets eating black walnuts. I find everything on your homestead to be fascinating. My one question is how do you do so much in a day, and also shoot and edit the videos. When I think my day is so busy and I don’t know if I can do one more thing, I think of you.
I canned pears for hubby for the very first time last year. I also freeze dried a couple batches. One of the older women on YT said she has never peeled pears and she thought her pears retained more of the pear flavor. So tired and frustrated that's how I did it last year. Peels still on the pear and hubby said just do it that way from now. He really liked them.
Pears are one of my favorite things to can! I will miss it this year as I don't have pear trees yet, and we have moved so I no longer have neighbors with the pears.
Yes! that is also one of my best childhood memories 💖 thanks for sharing that.😊 I love watching your channel, ( it's one of the 3 channel I take the time to watch) your an inspiration and make it all look so effortless. Blessings
Your a great teacher. I think i learn something new every time i watch your utube show. Love how the kids work well when you need them. Love seeing them play around too. Keep up the great work, we need you here with us. God bless you and Alvin and your family.
I have a box of pears and have been told that a knob of ginger in a simple syrup and then pour that over the canned up pears, it’s supposed to be amazing. Thank you so much for your video
I'm so glad my friend shared your video with me. We have a bunch of pears to can. The forst batch i had we ate half fresh, and i dehydrated the other half. Slices snd pieces. I can apples, applesauce, and dehydrate some apples, too. Also make fruit leather. We scrump apples from around our neighborhood, so most aren't perfect. But they sure are yummy! Takes quite awhile to dehydrate them, and i figured it's because I am on the coast, and it's humid here. I have the same dehydrator as you. I also sometimes dehydrate the peels, powder them before i use them, and add them to anything where i want apple flavoring. It's very tasty in oatmeal. Thanks again for showing this easy way to do pears!
Samson silent dehydrators work really well, and you can get them with alot of trays....also, I portion size my baggies, and my kids are allowed one a day :) makes them a bit sad, but makes less work for Mamma and they still get a yummy treat! We try to eat whole foods as much as possible, so I dehydrate alot of snacky foods, even bell pepper slices sprinkled with garlic, the kids love them!
I LOVE my Excalibur dehydrator. I have the model with 9 shelves. I can fit a LOT of apple slices on it and with the heater & fan blowing from the back wall, things dry faster than the stacking dehydrators. Plus, it’s easier to check and remove trays/pieces that are done first. I’ve had mine for 25 yrs and replaced the plastic shelves about 8 years ago with stainless steel shelves. They often have sales, so if you sign up for emails you can watch for a 20% off. It’s totally worth it! But if you can find a used one- even better
Your family is wonderful! God has blessed you richly! Thank you for the pear canning recipe. I have a large pear tree & love the canned pears, but it takes me SO long! Your method looks much simpler! What breed is your turkey? This spring at the Waverly, Iowa swap meet I purchased a pair of Sweetgrass turkeys that look very similar to yours. I very much enjoy your videos, thank you for your time & effort in sharing! God bless!
Have you considered Dehydrated Ginger Pears? My family and church family love them. Slice thin and sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and ground ginger. Dehydrate for 8-10 hours at 140 degrees.
This has me so excited to get to work on that bushel basket of pears! Great info. I would have boiled those pears to mush!!! 5 minutes, the end! Wooo!!!
My neighbor has a pear tree, and she made a pear pie. I hadn't heard of pear pie, but was surprised at how good it was. I think she just did it like an apple pie. Not even sure she used cinnamon, but it sure was good!
Loved how you smacked that misbehaving hog. It'd be the first to become bacon for my freezer. Lol, many years ago, we raised meat hogs, Fred the Red got loose and bit a hole in our little swimming pool. I was so upset until one day sitting at the dinner table, totally enjoying a delicious porkchop. I asked my dad if it was Fred. Dad said that it was, and i replied that Fred was mighty good 😂. I was only about 8 years old.😂
Pears are a long time fruit that I can. I chuckle that you are canning quarts,as I now I am down to half pints! this year our trees are loaded and wish that we could share with your piggies!
My mother came from a big family(12 kids) and her mother did a lot of canning. Mama always said she hated when they canned peaches because it was so sticky. We never did any canning so I had to learn on my own. It's so nice that you are teaching your own kids.
My extended family always made apple butter, cooked all day, outside, over an open fire, in a huge copper vat. I felt honored being allowed to take my turn stirring the apples! There’s NO apple butter better than what my family made! I cried when my last jar was empty! The younger generation didn’t 👁️👁️ the need to continue this tradition. 😢
My granny made some great apple butter and mincemeat . I regret not learning more from her . I would be willing to bet the youngsters will regret it in time. When they are older and realize how quickly life goes by. . God is most definitely good .
Thank you so much, I just canned up a small batch tonight but they where so easy and so pretty looking in the pantry that Im going to go get more pears tomorrow.
New to you and I’m so enjoying them , very helpful to me in understanding them . Will be trying your canning recipes for sure. And love watching how you interact with your children. We need more families like yours.
Love your videos and started making yogurt after watching your tutorial. Gathering more courage to start canning as I‘ve had a few fails already. Would love to see a video on the pear butter that you mention in this video, if you ever need more ideas on what to record. Thank you so much for all you do.
I’m Amazed… I learned so much watching your Videos !!! I’m so glad I found your Channel… Until the next one … PS, GOD IS GOOD… I Love seeing that at end of you videos. It makes my Heart Smile 🥰🥰🥰
I have a Nesco just like yours. I love mine! I was never happy with my dehydrated apples.. they would get limp and sticky, but it could possibly be my storage method. I DO love to dehydrate sliced potatoes, though and they last a good long while. Mushrooms are best dehydrated as well. I like your method of smooshing the butter to remove the buttermilk. You don’t have trouble with the heat from your hands making the butter too soft. I smoosh mine on a cookie sheet with a spatula, but it is a long and tedious process..
I just found your channel looking for canning pears. So glad I stumbled onto your channel, I have a bushel of pears to can this week. Now I am not worried that my pears will be mushy and I learned how to make one of my favorite beverages, Root Beer! Oh and how to keep my green beans green, for next years season of green beans. Thank you!!!
Oddly I like canned pears better than fresh pears. So when a friend gave us two 10-gallon buckets full of fresh pears, I thought to can them. In each can I placed a few whole cloves and some fresh grated ginger (using no sugar only white grape juice). Oh my, the longer it sat the better the flavor!!
I know that a freeze dryer is pricey but since I was introduced to Freeze Dried apples 🍎 I cannot think of dehydrated apples. And you can preserve a large amount at a time.
I made then pears last year, and am so excited to do it again next week. Great way to do it, thanksfor teaching me! Also, I got a much nicer and bigger dehydrater...took just as much time as the smaller, cheaper one. So disappointing!
This video was 10mo ago which means that my neighbor's pear tree which has been droppimg pears like crazy, that momma deer has been gorging on, is producing pears that I should be picking & canning? They are small & green, I dont think I've ever seen them turn yellow. It was super nice to see you not put a ton of sugar in the pears or precook them! We don't like to eat a lot of sugar. My old time table guide says 25min WB or 10min PC and I had the idea they'd be mushy. I have only been canning for less than a year (started at age 55) but I'm trying to learn good ways, not just canning police ways. I have not yet done water bath, I have learned to use my PC to steam can with to use less water & time heating the water. I so appreciate your videos! God is absolutely good! Many Blessings from Deborah in West Virginia!
I work for the Canning Police Dept and I will be calling round soon to check your pantry. Homesteaders are trying to defund the Canning Police but I think that's just mean.
You likely can use your PC as a water bath canner. Keep the rack on the bottom as you would for PC, place your jars in the PC, have the water level come up to the neck of the jars, and bring the water to the boil. You can put your PC lid on, just don't add the weight or close the petcock (depending upon what kind you have) This applies to stovetop models. I haven't used an electric PC so can't comment on those.
Perfect timing as I was just given the opportunity to pick some pears. I had to process the ripe and bruised ones right away so I did pear sauce last night but I have a banana box full of greener intact pears yet to do. No pigs here to feed the damaged ones to so compost it is!
Hi there, So, I know you have pigs and the apple peels are good for them. But I just wanted to let you know what I do, in case you want to try it. I use my apple peeler/corer and make apple chips, (I feed the cores to the chickens or pigs if you have them :) then with the peelings I blend them in the blender and put them in the slow cooker for 4 -5 hours with spices and make apple sauce. The peelings make a very yummy flavorful applesauce :) Thanks for all of your wisdom!
My thoughts around the apples are to save the dehydrated ones until the fresh ones are no longer available. Fresh eating whenever possible is allways the first choice I would think. Where I live, Apples keep extremely well in cold storage, so are available a good portion of the year if stored right. Anyhow, that might cut down on the frustration of the products of your hard labour disappearing in minutes flat! ;_)
We use raw pumpkin seeds as a wormer for our dogs. We also eat them in salads. The compound in raw pumpkin seeds is the same as ivermectin. Vitamins A,C,D,Zinc an pumpkin seeds kept us healthy. I am over 75. Natural is the way to go.
Interesting! What do raw pumpkin seeds taste like? Also, how do you preserve them to keep them from going bad? My husband and I have always toasted the pumpkin seeds from our Jack-o-lantern every Halloween. And they’re delicious! But does toasting them kill the Ivermectin? Thank you in advance for your answers. 🦋
@@Faith-in-him I buy the seeds organic raw an dry. Toast will kill the compound. I just sprinkle on salads. For the dogs we grind the up an put them in their dog food. Maybe you could put them in a dehydrator. I would have to research that. They don't have a taste . I am 75. Bone broth is very important. Every nite I drink a cup of kifer. Let me know if you need any other info. I had crohn's at 40 so build my immune system saved my life. Two books The makers diet by jordan Rubin also Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. God bless

Peaches too.
I tried this trick and it didn’t work for me. It did make them a bit easier to peel but the skins didn’t slide off as I saw them do on a UA-cam video 😕
Try blanching another minute the next time!!@@mysticmom616
I just used a vegetable peeler it worked much easier than blanching without cooking my pears.
thank you for this tip ma'am!!
I appreciate your comments about your food standards. Folks are just too impressed with visually perfect produce.

I love all your stories from your childhood and your culture you grew up. Thanks for all your canning tips. 💜
Thoroughly enjoyed the memories from your childhood at pear schnitzing!
I had no idea that my canning rack lifted up and held on the side of the pot!! You never know what you’ll learn when watching others can 😀
Same here, but I wondered why it was crooked!
Me either LOL. Saw her and was like WHAT! Lol
🤣😂🤣

My pears are different … kind of rock hard. I started roasting them and makes them delicious, but not sure if you can can them roasted
I never knew this. Thanks for the info! ❤
You do everything with such grace and ease ! I love you videos
RuthAnn, how do you salt your butter ? What kind of salt do you use? When is it added? It's such a joy to be in the kitchen or garden with you and your family ❣️

I have a box of pears and have been told that a knob of ginger in a simple syrup and then pour that over the canned up pears, it’s supposed to be amazing. Thank you so much for your video
What is a knob of ginger
@@lauraIngleswilder74just a piece of raw ginger

God bless!
Thank you for sharing your childhood experiences! I grew ⤴️ w/ Old Order German Baptists; Leona, Virginia Mae & Anne were my best friends!
Have you considered Dehydrated Ginger Pears? My family and church family love them. Slice thin and sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and ground ginger. Dehydrate for 8-10 hours at 140 degrees.
I am always learning more from you, RuthAnn! I am hoping to can pears next, and now I'll know not to boil them to mush!
Once again learned something new about canning pears! Putting them in water to stop browning 👍
This has me so excited to get to work on that bushel basket of pears! Great info. I would have boiled those pears to mush!!! 5 minutes, the end! Wooo!!!
I love hearing your wind chimes
My neighbor has a pear tree, and she made a pear pie. I hadn't heard of pear pie, but was surprised at how good it was. I think she just did it like an apple pie. Not even sure she used cinnamon, but it sure was good!
Yummy. I have canned my whole life and I love learning about the tips and tricks. You’re a great teacher!
Wow….Love your video’s so happy I found your channel. Thank for showing all this and educating us about homesteading and your childhood..
You are such a delight, Mrs Z! Really enjoying your content!
I sure admire you!! You're doing a Great Job of Everything! Many, Many Blessings to you and your family!
Thank you for this video. You will never know how much this means to me. ❤ 😊
My mother came from a big family(12 kids) and her mother did a lot of canning. Mama always said she hated when they canned peaches because it was so sticky. We never did any canning so I had to learn on my own. It's so nice that you are teaching your own kids.
I like baking w/ dried apples but as for eating, there’s nothing better than crunching on them! I ❤️ the sound & also, the juice!
I agree about the process of dehydrating apples. I wish I had a freeze dryer. Ive had it in my Amazon shopping cart several times
Just came across your video. Loved all the reasoning behind what you do. First time canning. Have a pear tree that gave me about 45-50 lbs of pears
It brings joy to me to watch you. Thanks for teaching us so much. Many Smiles!!!!
Thank you Ms. Zimmerman! I am about to use this yummy for the first time 🍐🤗
All the dairy stuff you make.
I love it!!!
Those pears sound deliciously crispy!
If your family should starts a new country, I'd like to be part of that country. You are such good people!
I’m so glad I found your Channel… Until the next one …
PS, GOD IS GOOD…
I Love seeing that at end of you videos. It makes my Heart Smile 🥰🥰🥰
I love watching your videos. I have pears to use up so I am excited to can them. Thank you
Last year I made pear vinegar with the peels and cores. Best vinegar ever! I just love your channel!
I am going to try this! I think the cinnamon stick with them would be such a nice touch. Thanks!
I laughed so hard at you when you smacked the pig😂😂
I just found your channel looking for canning pears. So glad I stumbled onto your channel, I have a bushel of pears to can this week. Now I am not worried that my pears will be mushy and I learned how to make one of my favorite beverages, Root Beer! Oh and how to keep my green beans green, for next years season of green beans. Thank you!!!
Thank you for watching and for your kind words!!!
Wow ohh wow. You are a hard working MoMA. Vitamix should give you an industrial blender for all the advertising you do.. keep up the great work ❤
Oddly I like canned pears better than fresh pears. So when a friend gave us two 10-gallon buckets full of fresh pears, I thought to can them. In each can I placed a few whole cloves and some fresh grated ginger (using no sugar only white grape juice). Oh my, the longer it sat the better the flavor!!
What mom canned our pears we loved it because we knew we’d get treats come winter. I also loved to drink the pear juice.
Ruthann I love that pitcher!!
I know that a freeze dryer is pricey but since I was introduced to Freeze Dried apples 🍎 I cannot think of dehydrated apples. And you can preserve a large amount at a time.
My Mom always peeled them hard we would help and after they were canned they were wonderful!!
Funny you mentioned table manners…Mama always said there was a need for a ‘table manner training’ restaurant. 😂
My pears only produce every other year. They look delicious. I remember canning pears with my Grandmother.
Pick and let them ripen in a cardboard box
I work for the Canning Police Dept and I will be calling round soon to check your pantry. Homesteaders are trying to defund the Canning Police but I think that's just mean.
You likely can use your PC as a water bath canner. Keep the rack on the bottom as you would for PC, place your jars in the PC, have the water level come up to the neck of the jars, and bring the water to the boil. You can put your PC lid on, just don't add the weight or close the petcock (depending upon what kind you have)
This applies to stovetop models. I haven't used an electric PC so can't comment on those.
I have an Excalibur dehydrator and it still takes a couple of days to dehydrate apples! But they are oh so good. Blessings, Marlene
That’s good to know. I’ve wondered if that one would be faster.
Perfect timing as I was just given the opportunity to pick some pears. I had to process the ripe and bruised ones right away so I did pear sauce last night but I have a banana box full of greener intact pears yet to do. No pigs here to feed the damaged ones to so compost it is!
Look at the comfrey.. so pretty
I really enjoy the stories you tell.
Hi there,
So, I know you have pigs and the apple peels are good for them. But I just wanted to let you know what I do, in case you want to try it.
I use my apple peeler/corer and make apple chips, (I feed the cores to the chickens or pigs if you have them :)
then with the peelings I blend them in the blender and put them in the slow cooker for 4 -5 hours with spices and make apple sauce.
The peelings make a very yummy flavorful applesauce :)
Thanks for all of your wisdom!
My thoughts around the apples are to save the dehydrated ones until the fresh ones are no longer available. Fresh eating whenever possible is allways the first choice I would think. Where I live, Apples keep extremely well in cold storage, so are available a good portion of the year if stored right. Anyhow, that might cut down on the frustration of the products of your hard labour disappearing in minutes flat! ;_)
Love the close up of the pigs enjoying the nuts. :)
Would love to see a more detailed video turning cream into butter in blender. Thx. Love your videos.
Beautiful thanks for sharing . I love seeing the water bath canner being used . I do not like other canners don’t know how to use
I just love your video. Someone gave me a bushel of pear yesterday!
Good morning Ruth Ann! Enjoyed your canning insight. This is the first year to do more then stewed tomatoes. Have a blessed week.
God bless
Thank you!
How much per dog? Per pound?
On one off your videos you showed how to hot pack grapes for grape jelly… I would love to have your recipe please?! Thanks
