Dunno about Closer Look. Meyers and Colbert nowadays seem to have more in common with Kimmel or Corden than the ones doing actual, deep dive research like Oliver, Hasan, and Sam Bee. It’s not like they’ve suddenly become low-brow garbage, they just don’t really fulfill the role that some others - Hasan especially - do today.
@@poe_slaw Sure, there are different styles out there. I think comedians like Stewart, Noah, Colbert, and Meyers have always done a decent job of covering the news in a light hearted way. But, like you said, Oliver and Hasan have really raised the bar.

Hey, something that might interest you. A couple of days ago my Amazon account was closed with no warning for after hours of wasted time they're telling me it's for excessive returns which I think is an error but that's beside the point. When they closed my Amazon account all my Amazon devices that I own for years primarily all my Echo devices stopped working. I lost access to the Amazon Photos and Prime Video which I pay for. So apparently the devices you already own are subject to be disabled by Amazon on your perceived shopping habits! I assume the same applies to all other Amazon devices and services like fire OS tablets, Ring cameras, and probably AWS as well. Just wanted to make other people aware of this because they definitely don't tell you this when you buy your hardware and services.
I actually don't find him particularly funny as a comic but I love the concept of this show and what he's done with it so far, it's basically a more global version of what John Oliver is doing and we really need this right now. There's so much that divides us across international borders but issues like Amazon, Saudi Arabia and most importantly climate change (which I assume he'll get to) are global issues that we need to come together on and tackle together. There's no use coming down hard on Amazon with taxes if they can just move their HQ to some tax haven, it doesn't help if the US stops selling arms to the Saudis if Europe keeps doing it, and I don't think I need to explain how this applies to climate change. We're one effing species damnit, borders are a construct, race is a construct, we share one planet and it's the only one we have, let's take a moment to look outside our own a hole.

Man, the stuff with Amazon is such a weird space to navigate. I try not to use them as much as possible, but to a certain extent they have become unavoidable. I think that's while it's okay to understand that you'll use them because they are so convenient, it's also important to still vote in legislators that will strengthen anti-trust laws, make them pay their fair share in taxes (I'm pretty sure Amazon paid $0 in federal income tax in 2017), and to generally create legislation to reign these powerful companies in.
In its annual report filed to the SEC in February 2018, Amazon estimated that not only would the company not be paying anything in 2017 federal income taxes, but it would be getting a $137 million tax refund. So how did Amazon, which reported $5.6 billion in profit, expect to get money from the federal government in April? Tax credits and stocks Amazon lists two line items that likely got them here: tax credits worth $220 million and stock-based compensation worth $917 million. These reflect the normal workings of the tax system, according to Annette Nellen, professor and director of the Master of Science in Taxation program at San Jose University. Also: Think about the sales tax they generate on the state level.

There definitely is a point where "wokeness" becomes counterproductive. For example, boycotts don't do much unless it's during a crucial period of time, such as during a strike. The goals of a boycott must be clearly laid out. Otherwise, whatever problem arose to push you to boycott in the first place will likely never be solved.

Dunno about Closer Look. Meyers and Colbert nowadays seem to have more in common with Kimmel or Corden than the ones doing actual, deep dive research like Oliver, Hasan, and Sam Bee. I am a IT professional, i have friends who work for Amazon(most probably for Amazon web servies bcoz even they are IT professionals) and i was thinking of switching to Amazon bcoz they pay really good amount and even the work environment is great, but now after watching this episode i don't wanna join an evil corporation which takes out competition by its evil practices. Now i get why Indian government made policy changes to restrict these companies to sell their products at a cheaper price(Amazon had to pull out thousands of products). If these companies are not stopped now then maybe in few years they will start to interfere with geo political issues around the world. @@Brando550 This is exactly what I am doing as well! Also, what I like doing is searching for businesses that are ethical and sustainable for my purchases. The scene at 9:20 where a senator asks "How do you sustain a business model in where users do not pay for your services?", is the sole dam reason why we need these old conservative and neoliberal farts out of the government. The times have just changed so much that they do not understand how things works so therefore how do you expect them to regulate them for business fairness.
Technology moves faster than laws. That's why it is so hard for tech and law to catch up unless you are lower at a tech company.
Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj is my new addiction.
Can't have enough of it.

This video was the reason I changed my decision from selling on Amazon to starting our own website.
I used to work in the amazon warehouse. While working on the 3rd floor, I need to go to the restroom, they were cleaning it at the time. So I went to the 4th floor, it was out of order. I went to the 2nd floor only to find out I cannot exit from the stairwell due to high ceiling from 1sr floor, so I went to the 1st floor restroom. They came to ask me why wasn't I working for 20 minutes.

Who else likes going to the store to actually see things, be around actual people and have real life experiences
I don't use amazon and I manage, and on a fixed income to boot. It is still brick and mortar for me.
The only entity in US who's paid zero taxes in a lifetime is our current President.
Tax credits and stocks
Amazon lists two line items that likely got them here: tax credits worth $220 million and stock-based compensation worth $917 million.
These reflect the normal workings of the tax system, according to Annette Nellen, professor and director of the Master of Science in Taxation program at San Jose University.
Also: Think about the sales tax they generate on the state level.
