Nice video. I imagine this thing functions much better when it's dark as well since you don't have all the energy from the sun constantly beating down on you. I imagine that's going to be how most people want to use this thing anyway. It's one thing to be awake at 100 degrees, but trying to sleep in it suuuucks.

That's a good point that I didn't think about, I'd definitely get longer run times at night when it's even cooler. I thought about mentioning that if I wanted to sleeping during the day, I could hook up solar and keep the Wave2 almost topped off the entire time while the sun is out. On the last test I did, It was a couple of hours before sun down.

Good stuff! I’m living in my camper in Grand Junction (more Utah like than Colorado) and it may get hot in the camper here… I need to start thinking about adding a portable AC unit. I could always drive up high on the Mesa and park the camper in shade, but I have a solid spot at my work that’s free and requires no gas.
I haven’t really had a completely miserable hot camping experience (you can usually get cool in Colorado… heat is more important), but I stayed in a house with AC in Central Florida one summer and that was a bit tough.

    Ah. Nap time.
Interesting unit for sure. At the farm co op they have an insulated container with a mini split AC and a piggy back sensor to force it to run to 40 degrees.
It's entirely solar powered with about 2.4k on top.
What I'm getting at is: I would like to see if this unit can similarly be tricked to turn your car into a refrigerator.

Interesting video! I'll be honest, I don't think I'll pay that kind of money for just a few hours of minor relief. While in the corps, I'd douse myself in water before sleeping and the water evaporating helped keep me cool enough to sleep. I too suffer from sleep apnea and have been using a cpap for about two years now. I encourage you to make a video on how to overland with a CPAP. I don't know what type of CPAP you use while overlanding, but since I switched to a travel cpap vs. a home cpap it was a game changer. The size is definitely helpful, but the battery usage is unbelievable
My home cpap would burn through a 500w Jackery in one night, the travel cpap would use about 7 to 8 percent. Keep up the good work!

First of all, THANK YOU 🙏 for sharing your past experiences and also thank you for your service!
Oh Wow on the travel CPAP! I use a Airsense 10 (I think most of us have this unit, or the newer model 11). Since I run it on the AC outlet, I feel that just the alternating current being on goes through capacity. I had an old 278 WH power station and my CPAP would drop it 20%, my 768 WH EcoFlow River 2 also drops 20% over night.
As far as dealing with warms, I’ve been avoiding the blistering deserts and plan my adventures to drive through these areas. I check the weather before time and plan to have camp at the higher elevations, there was just that one time were i really goofed up and the Wife were camping in 100F at sundown and 90F at midnight. I haven’t made a mistake like that again, it was terrible! 2nd warmest night was in the Mojave desert on a warm April night. I found that putting a thin long sleeve shirt and thin pants made it feel more comfortable and not so sticky. I’ll be traveling from California to Colorado twice this year and plan to bring the Wave2 with me for when I camp somewhere between. I use to camp in the high elevations of Flagstaff, but for the past 2 years the national forest has been shutting down due to forest fire risk, so I’ll be forced to camp somewhere warm.
I’ll have to look up that portable CPAP or maybe a DC plug for my Airsense 10. I’m rolling up on 5 years, I think insurance covers a new unit!

Almost 5 years ago, My Wife's Aunt (who's also my Dentist and a CPAP user herself) mentioned that I was losing years off my life without treating my condition. I had already decided I would get a sleep study and seek treatment, but while I was waiting for my insurance to kick in (starting at a new company), I was called in to talk to the HR manager about falling asleep during company meetings 🤣. Now, I really had motivation to treat my sleep apnea!
I love my CPAP machine. The way I look at it is that I am now getting more oxygen into my body compared to the average person. It's like getting steroids up my nose.

I tried it just for a moment. The heat is created differently than an electric heater, but it still consumes a lot of energy, about twice as much as the Air conditioner. I’ll have to do more testing. I’ll be on more ski trips (since we have a record breaking ski season and there will be snow until August. Nights won’t be as cold, but they still might dip before 30F.). It’s also possible that ECO May really prolong the run time. Hi Jon, As always, thanks for the video and info. I was especially interested in this for the Product info and practical experience you generally are so good at. I thought you fell a little short on this one, like you just did the bare minimum to "get this video out and be done with your contracted responsibilities (that you mentioned in a reply to Samuel Dean)". I do want to give you kudos for doing your testing in both a closed space (inside vehicle) and in the tent (with and without some insulation). And good job of making it clear, especially for people who are not familiar manipulating the Watts = Volts x Amps equation, that on the nights you will need this unit the most, very cold night needing it for heat or very hot nights needing it for cooling, the $1K battery for this unit (that is not included in the $1.3k price tag) will be empty after 3 hours or about 1/3rd of your planned sleeping time (depending on all the variables brought up below). So you might need a total of 3 batteries...$3K plus the unit itself at $1.3k for a price tag passing $4k along with the cost of the power producing mechanisms for daily recharging.
I wish you would have tested both the heating function and the cooling function in an actual overnight scenario as that is how most of us will use this portable Air Conditioning unit. Of course it is impossible to do both during one week of one season of the year but for us to truly understand the practicality of this unit, we need those real life conditions; a night that starts at about 90 degrees and doesn't get any cooler than 80 degrees (for the cooling test) and a night that starts at about 55 degrees and cools down to 40 degrees (to test the heating). Those conditions then need to be supported with measurements and data showing the starting temperature in the space being conditioned, the outside temperature and the starting battery charge in Watts available and then data (every 15 to 30 minutes for the first 90 minutes) followed by data every 30 to 60 minutes afterward until morning wake up time. The Data at each measurement interval should include temperature inside, temperature outside, Watts remaining in the battery. Easy for me to say how this review and the degree of detail should be done. I know you put a ton of time in making a video like this and I do truly appreciate all of your videos and the effort put into them. (If you want to pass this unit on to me, I'd be happy to collect that data as I described and I''m in the western Phoenix metro area :).
Making practical air conditioning (heat or cooling) for an over-lander has been almost impossible in the past and is now just getting to the doable (but very expensive) stage. It really requires 4 elements to be successful. 1. A compact and efficient conditioner (heating & cooling) which I think is mostly the case with the Ecoflow2 (but with battery it's pretty expensive & bulky & heavy for the small spaces we over-landers occupy) 2. A large size battery able to power the "A/C - Heater" providing 8 hours of reasonably comfortable sleeping temperatures (75 degrees in Summer and 65 degrees in winter) such that one is not waking up due to being too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter. 3. A solar array large enough to recharge the battery during the day for another 8 hours of running time come evening. 4. Insulation and plugging air leaks to a reasonable degree to allow the performance of the unit and the combo of battery and solar array charging and storage abilities to also keep up the charge daily for that night's usage.
I think this unit is probably a "GO" for a small, well insulated camper trailer with full-time solar (permanent mounting on roof) so it can collect watts during the day while driving and have deployable extra panels to supplement when parked. The trailer also has the space & weight handling abilities for the extra weight of the unit and supplemental batteries and extra solar panels needed for the system to be useable daily. I can see where a smaller gasoline powered inverter generator could be an essential part of the equation to help fill or top off the batteries before bedtime on some nights where adequate sun to recharge the batteries completely was not available. This adds more weight and space requirements and a gas can might be needed if one does not use the vehicle gas tank as it's generators gas can.
We over-landers trying to stay light and nimble by sleeping in our vehicles or having just a roof top tent already struggle with weight and space in our rigs. Every decision regarding our rigs is a trade off of dollars, weight, space, comfort and vehicle capability and/or range while trying to keep everything as small, comfortable and inexpensive as possible. Ha! Your videos as usual do a good job of addressing all of these topics as well as showing us great places to travel to. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for taking the time to write up this comment Tim. I really wish I had more time to do more comprehensive testing. EcoFlow has been one of the most accommodating and understanding companies that I ever received product for review. I actually had the Wave 2 sitting in my garage about 2 months ago, it's just that between a full time job and going on my adventures, I don't have too much time to test products, edit videos, and meet deadlines. Other companies will require content creation within 2-3 weeks after I receive the product for testing.
Now, before I continue, I have to make it clear that this is a launch video (reference 2:55). EcoFlow coordinated with other content creators to release these videos right at product launch. The purpose of a launch video is to go over features and talking points. I don't think they wanted me to go into detail testing, but I felt it was the least I can do for the overlanding community knowledge base, and as always, I wanted to keep it honest. The reason I could not test the heater function is because I couldn't keep the Wave 2 charged up and topped off. In retrospect, I could have just recharged the Wave 2 at home and do a little test in my driveway, but It's 50F at night where I live, which wouldn't be a really good test. I need to test this unit next winter in 0F. I have some concerns with the CFM battery, they don't work well in cold temps. But be rest assured that all these EcoFlow products will be going through rigorous testing and will be making regular appearances in my adventure episodes.
You mentioned Solar charging in your comment and on this specific trip I found it to be inefficient and inconsistent. During the day, I spend most of my time doing an activity or doing point to point exploration in my vehicle, so I won't have the time to deploy my auxiliary solar panels. While at the ski resort, I don't feel comfortable with leaving my solar panel unattended. I've actually come to the conclusion that I need upgrade my charging. I've started the installation of a 40amp DC to DC inverter. I'm just waiting for the parts to come in. Thanks for your detail observations and feedback Tim!

@@JonDZ_Adventuring Thanks Jon for reading the comment and giving a detailed reply. All great points you make, especially the "product launch" part of it where one just gives an overview and you went above and beyond completing that task.
I agree that using deployable solar panels have limited use for an over-lander since we are mostly moving during the best sun light hours of the day or we are actively hiking, skiing etc... away from the vehicle such that the panels are subject to walking away resulting in very little solar energy collection in a normal over-landers day. I like the idea of boosting the charging system for the vehicle motor to more quickly refill batteries while driving. I'll be interested to see your report on that set up once you get it installed and tested.
Thanks again for the effort you put in these videos in addition to working full time and having a family...you are busy AND finding a way to have a lot of fun while including your family and friends with your passion of over-landing.
p.s. - I had severe apnea and did not know it. The CPAP was life changing. Eventually I decided to modify my lifestyle - better eating choices, portion control, new job where I wasn't eating on the road all the time and regular exercise doing fun games I enjoyed so it didn't feel like exercise. I lost the weight and no longer needed the CPAP. Although the changes I made sound easy on paper, we all know it is a struggle and sacrifice to make those changes but I just wanted to share a success story that it can be done, over time and like any behavior modification program (I quit smoking too) there will probably be set-backs and multiple restarts (not failures) before one finds a way to make it work.
