I didn’t have much time to edit this video. I drove into work 15 minutes early to record the “talking head” portion, then went into work, fulfilled all my duties, and then did this edit. I was not able to add any additional narration. There’s things I wish I could have expanded on and explained better, so just know that I wasn’t able to. I wanted to thank many of you for all the support and words of encouragement. I made this video because I know that there’s many of you out there that have BEEN THROUGH THIS, that are going through this, or may have recovered from this (regarding prediabetes/type 2 diabetes). I’m thankful for hearing the success stories in the below comments. I wanted to clear up a few things: 1.) overlanding type travel is a “lifestyle” for me. My vehicle is built in a way where all I have to do is add food, water and a change of clothes and I’m ready for an adventure. My vehicle is a big part of my life and my channel content will always include it. 2.) steroid induced diabetes (sudden onset) was a wake up call, and it has motivated me to lose 25-28 lbs. in 2 months through cutting out sugar, simple carbs and exercise. I have also been taking this medication called Jardiance, which doesn’t assist in weight loss very much, it just makes me piss out sugar (which I’m not intaking very much of). I mention that my A1C hit 10.2, but I forgot to mention that I have dropped it to 7.1 in just 2 months. I haven’t been in my 250 lb range in a long time. I’m looking to continue to regain muscle and get my BMI down further (to about 230 lbs.) 3.) My channel has always been about practical car camping (overlanding), and in this video I complain about the over saturation of Overland content and how all the bigger channels all have the same look. I didn’t mean to give such harsh criticism, what I wish I would have said is that MANY OF YOU aren’t watching much of this over saturated content either. How much longer can we stay interested in TRAIL/CAMP/COOK videos? And more importantly, how much longer can YOU stay interested in living the lifestyle of trail/camp/cook without building your trips around an activity or destination?

I'll be completely honest: I'm not an overlander, nor am I someone who is an outdoors enthusiast in any way. Hell, I've never been camping once in my life. But I needed a work vehicle that wasn't going to be jarring on the construction site (but can also go comfortably long distances from site to site), stumbled across your video, and as a previous Honda CR-V owner many moons ago was greatly impressed by the capabilities your Honda had that you had put on display. For me personally, you are the poster kid for the Honda Global Light Truck platform and what it is capable of as a consumer putting together what you can with the non-existent aftermarket you had available at the start. And that's what I watch your content for; to see how the aftermarket for this platform is growing, what I can do to my vehicle, and see it's limit through owners like yourself. It was refreshing to see someone other than a race team taking a vehicle that traditionally wouldn't go as far as you've pushed into something that competes with body on frame vehicles on the moderate to difficult off-road trails. And how detailed you get with the nerd stats and documenting every change you do to your vehicle. I've watched the tire size video and the suspension videos on repeat countless times already. So needless to say you and your content are one of the main reasons I bought my Honda Passport, and I've loved it since. I rabidly follow your content, as well as others that I've found through your mentions and social media posts, and has helped me make my Passport something I love to drive. And I do it for work, not recreation, lol. I love your content, love what you are doing, and have done. But I understand you gotta look out for you and your health first. And maybe it was never your intention to be one of the centers of the Honda Global Light Truck enthusiasts and the off-road Honda modding scene, at least maybe not your primary goal as much as showing your adventures? But regardless of which direction you go from here, I just want to say thank you for all you have done! It's been a fantastic ride literally and figuratively!

Yeah, none of this was my intention, from the start back in 2016, I was just compiling pictures and video footage from my trips and uploading to UA-cam because it was free video storage 😂. I was an active member of car forums and found that it was so much easier to get my ideas across through video. People took a liking to them and that inspired me to put more effort into these. Comments like yours is one of the reasons for me to keep going, you have no idea how much your support means.
John, I've only commented on one of your videos, but I've been watching for awhile. Your health has to come first. I've been without sugar for over a year and a half. I haven't been diagnosed with anything, but my family is riddled with diabetes and hypoglycemia. Do whatever you do. The people that enjoy your content will be around. I recently had a bad car wreck. Hydroplaned off a highway and down a 15 foot drop covered in boulders. Watching your videos is why I ended up buying a 2021 Honda Passport. Watching your videos is why I'm picking up the supplies tomorrow to change the oil, brake fluid, transfer case fluid, and rear differential fluid. I enjoyed your video today. I'm addition to the wreck in March I've had several serious back injuries and an slowly coming to to realization I'll never get to camp or hike the mountains again. Keep doing what you do. Thanks Tim 🙏 I’m already feeling so much better. Back in November of 2023 I was 290 lbs. doing this same hike. I was 255 lbs. in this video with a 33 lb. Pack and hiked up almost twice as fast. Thanks for the best wishes, I’m going to need it for this upcoming 17 mile 6400 ft. Hike in 3 weeks. I’m down to 250 right now. The lbs. are really starting to come off now that I’ve rebuilt some muscle.
That’s why I named my channel what I did. My interests are too varied to be defined by a term- and like you, a term that wasn’t even around when I started doing this stuff decades ago. Besides, everything in life can be an adventure if you view it that way. Adventure on and stay healthy. 🤙

Your channel keeps it real. The issue I have with all the “overlanding” channels is the constant push of overbuilt and overpriced rigs for the average Joe. Rigs that most people can’t afford to build and more importantly maintain. It’s fantasy and that’s what attracts people I think. Checking out the latest and greatest mods that one wishes to add to their own vehicle but most will never do. I appreciate channels like yours that are real world adventures that the average Joe can do. As far as your health I can relate. I was in a similar situation. I will keep this short and simple for those who face this health problem. Cur your carbs under 60grams a day to start and eat 2x a day. I eat brunch at 11am and dinner at 4pm with an 18hour intermittent fast in between. Many of videos on this topic. Cut out junk carbs (sugar, candy etc.) and get your carbs from vegetables and some fruit. Get your carbs down to 20grams if you can but start at under 100grams and keep trying to drop it lower by 20 grams until you reach 20-40 grams. Avoid processed oils. Meat and fat is health food. I apologize for going on but lots of info on this and it works. It has changed my life. All doctors and Big Pharma want to do is keep us medicated. Good luck Jon and keep it real. 🙏
Well said about the Overlanding space right now, and that’s a solid plan for a healthier life you mentioned. Sugar and carbs are almost unavoidable. They’re in my ranch dressing that goes along with my salad, there’s 2grams in 1 tiny protein bar. That 60g a day goal would be a good thing to follow. My guess is I’m intaking about 30g a day max.
Proud of you for all the hard work on your recovery. I know a lot of people that would not change their diet or routine even for something serious like that, and you've been doing an amazing job. Dude, I’m so glad you checked yourself and you’re working on it. Same thing happened to me last year and I didn’t know. I had 10.1 as well. Now I’ve been working on it and now I manage 7.1-7.2 which isn’t good yet bad it’s much better. I’m hopping by the end of the year I can manage lower 6’s or get it all the way back to normal. Even though this it’s a forever journey now. I follow your channel for 4 years now and I follow you for the content not for the name. Your content and your humble personality are the reason I’m here. Thanks Luis! Sounds like we’re having a similar journey and taking the steps to take care of ourselves. I forgot to mention it in the video, but I was able to bring my A1C from 10.2 to 7.1 in a 2 month period. I was told that weight loss is key, because our insulin receptors get spread thin and don’t work very well if our stomach’s aren’t flat.
Jon, I enjoy your Chanel because it’s more than just off roading videos, you always go in depth about a lot interesting topics and it’s never repetitive. I’m currently in a similar health situation as you. It inspires me to go out and hike as well.

I did that hike in a single day on exactly July 17, 2017. We disembarked at 4am and reached the summit at 11am. I started training for the hike at 255 lbs. and dropped all the way down to 215 lbs, but I lost the weight through diet, and not from resistance training. Anyways, on the way down, our bodies really started to ache. Feet, knees, shins. It sucked. It took us 13 hours to get back down the mountain. I highly recommend some trekking poles for the way down. Also, bring a water filter.
Ive been doing it since 2015 as well. The popularity has made everything with the work camp, camping, overlanding, and offroading way overpriced. To the point that I'm glad I dont have a RTT on my truck anymore like everyone and their grandma.
I’ve always been against RTTs and slept in the back of my Passport for 3 years of its ownership. Then one day I had a rear cargo basket failure and had to ratchet strap it to my tire carrier and couldn’t easily remove gear out of the cargo area so the wife and I could sleep. We had to cozy up in the front seats in 30F and it was miserable. I was offered a RTT for long term review prior to, and called up that company to see if that offer was still on the table. I love the tent I have, it gets a lot of use.

Greatly appreciate the real talk on “overlanding”. I think there is a key distinction between building an overland style rig to take on a wide variety of outdoor adventures, and actual overlanding in the traditional/pre-U.S. trend definition of the term. Would be great to see more people say they are just going dispersed camping/off-roading/hiking when travel isn’t involved. There is no need to apply a hip (and arguably misused) label to have a good time outdoors. Also I’ll be curious to see how your hiking content performs. We’ve published a few hiking videos some with stellar imagery… but they’ve always fallen flat with views compared to gear reviews and vehicle based trips. Hope you have more luck than us!!
I still watch Ronny Dahl. He mentions that they just called overland built vehicles "Tourers", basically car campers, hehe! So, on this trip in my video, I decided to drive 4 hours to the Alabama hills to camp out so I could wake up early and hike the first leg of Mt. Whitney. There's alot of content from the drive up and at camp, so my videos won't be purely about hiking, although, when I do Yosemite's half dome this July 2024, I'll definitely be doing a video about the whole experience.

Yes it is! In 2 months I have dropped it to 7.1. I could only imagine what that number is going to be after the death cycle of a red blood cell (3 months)
Congrats on getting your health in check. I'm a backpacker slowly getting into overlan....... err..... moderatelyoffroaddispersedcarcamping. Backpacking around/ near San Diego (all the normal stops- San Gorgonio, Mt Baldy, San Jacinto etc) isn't as fun as it used to be. Driving up a trail and finding a nice place to camp sounds more fun right now. Best wishes.
Thanks! There's still some work to do, but I'm absolutely amazed I lost 25 lbs by cutting out carbs BUT increasing my calorie intake 🤣. I'm slowly trying to eat less and less. I really want to be a more balanced outdoorsman. I want to incorporate all of these activities into my travels. The diabetes has really motivated me to be more active and get it reversed!

I also did the “overland” thing long ago. (Car camping). Just about a year ago I got tired of the OL crowd and moved away from it. Don’t get me wrong I still car camp. But I do more hiking and outdoor activities other then driving my truck to a secluded location populated by up a RTT and overland. Sold a lot of the OL gear I thought I needed. Truck is now way lighter and I can go more miles. Take care of yourself and I look forward to more outdoor vids from you.

I could certainly see you mixing things up on your channel….such as bushcraft stuff since you enjoy hiking and the great outdoors. Congrats on getting your Diabetes in check. The weight loss is apparent and really helps going further in outdoor adventuring. It is truly surprising how much sugar/carbs destroy our health. I have Type 2 diabetes as well and it took me 2 years to truly figure it out. A Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) was the ticket to seeing how my body reacted to the foods I ate, I'm currently using the Libre3.
Thanks! I did labs when I had pneumonia and my fasting glucose was 96. One day I walked into work and my fasting glucose was 277!!! I felt so dizzy driving into work, and this was a day after I took 40 mg of prednisone. Checked my A1C and it was 10.2 on 3/20 and then checked it before seeing an endocrinologist on 5/22 and it has dropped to 7.1. He wants me to lose another 15 lbs. and thinks I’ll have this all reversed. I’m cutting sugar out long term though, and hoping I don’t developed high cholesterol.

Thanks bud! Regarding sleep apnea, it’s treated with my cpap machine. It prevents me from snoring and I get the best nights sleep. I’m getting better rest than most people that don’t use one, since it forces filtered air down my nose, even if one nostrll is clogged. On a cold Zero degree night, I can completely cover my face and still breath (since the intake is on the machine). I was in denial for so long, but Wife talked me into getting checked out. Even if I have substantial weight loss, I’ll still use it because it stops the snoring so my Wife gets better sleep, and it gives me better sleep. I know I’ve been using the words “steroids” a lot. But it felt like I was on Performance enhancing steroids the 1st day after using the cpap. It was that life changing for me.
Jon, keep going brother! Whatever content you create I am in! Even if you go back to your digital zoom again! I’ve been in similar scare 1 and a half years ago. Completely cute down coke(average 3 cans a day) , almonds and blanched broccoli and cute my meal down to 2 meals a day. Just wanted to share since we are being open here. 😂. Keep pushing! But almonds and broccoli! Saved my life! Oh and stretching! I am 40 plus years~ FYI.

The crazy thing is that although I cut out the simple carbs and sugar, I have increased my caloric intake by eating more protein and substituting rice with things like Hummus. I'm down 25-28 lbs. but my quad muscles are almost back to cycling level of shape. Thanks for the support! You don't know how much it means to me!

Thanks! I did it back in 2017 in one day, and I said I would never do it again. But this time around I’ll be doing it in 2 days! In 2017, I started my training at 255 lbs. and dropped to 215 lbs. in 3.5 months. I hardly trained though, just a 10+ mile hike with little elevation gain. This time around I’m heavier, but actually resistance training, and hiking with elevation gain and a 30+ lb. Pack

Zeroing in on health is always good. Cutting out sugar is key.. I think cutting out bad seed oils is very important also...! From what I understand sticking to grass-fed butter.. olive oil low temp cooking. I think the paleo diet /Mediterranean diets. Are some of the best sustainable diets to follow. I am massively struggle trying to follow these.... Great video! 💯

Health first. Glad you are honestly speaking out about this. As for “overlanding videos” not tired per say, but noticing that a lot of people and channels have cut back or are getting out beyond just trails to actually traveling and taking “glamping trips”. I think that’s ok. And real life as not so glamorous as it is, is something that at least for me, has made me pause a bit from getting out there or watching the content. Also, I blame genetics and that damn microwave lol. I hope you got rid of it 😄
Nooooooooo! The Microwave is staying!!! 😂😂😂😂. Joking aside, there’s definitely less use for it, but it was perfect for reheating meat I cooked on a skillet, and it’s great as a storage container when not in use.

I do too bud. I had so many days off where I could have went on a trip across the country, but I felt either ill from walking pneumonia, or too dizzy from the steroid induced diabetes. I'm feeling much much better now, and I'm looking forward to my upcoming Colorado trip. Plenty of overlanding content will be made there!

Yeah, hitting 290ish was bad. I was wondering if I was going to break 300 lbs. Weight was so hard for me to lose, but eating carbs and sugar was really holding me back. My Goal is 230 lbs. with more muscle. I'm at 255 lbs now. Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I feel ya brah I work 6 days a week the life of a mail carrier brah I build my Honda just to drive it to work camp prob 3-4 times a year but I do a lot of fishing tho yes in my Honda Element I even stop looking for rooftop tents cuz I just work too much don’t have the time to enjoy like most
You actually have a great point. Adventuring is more broad and less predictable. WOW 10.2 on your A1c is wow high. Why the steroids before or is it just a term you use. Glad you’re taking care of your health. 🤙🏽
I was being treated for Pneumonia and bronchitis with steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Yeah, A1C went from 10.2 to 7.1 in 2 months. It might even be at a normal range now that it's almost 3 months, but I'm fighting diabetes until it's completely stomped out!
Yes, more of the mixed activities are encouraged. Of course, they will help keep you active which makes you healthier…less time on your a$$ in a SUV seat!
I quit cold turkey, I feel incredible! I have so much energy, but that might be from the sudden weight loss. I dropped 25 lbs. in 2 months. I also gained a bit of muscle too, which is heavier than the fat I lost.
Overlanding UA-cam content in general is definitely getting stale. I no longer watch the bigger channels because it’s all about mods, expos, and full time overlanding with expensive rigs, trailers, and gear I will never be interested in. But I still enjoy your channel and a few other smaller ones that stay true their origins. Keep on keeping on!
Thanks for the kind words! I wish I had more time to explain and a narrate things, but that talking head portion at the beginning of the video was made 10 minutes before I clocked into work, and then I did the editing on my down time (after all my duties were completed). One point that I wasn't able to get across is that I'm getting tired of "pure" offroading and camping and I'm getting even more tired of watching people do it on UA-cam. I need to mix other activities into my trips.
A discussion can certainly be had about what you describe regarding overlanding. I built a rig to do all those things but it was never intended to be considered an overlanding rig. But once it was built for the purposes it was, it just became convenient and fun to use the rig for that in the meantime. I think ALOT of people who "overland" came from a different perspective and over time have become 'bored' with it as that was the sole purpose for their rig. Anyhoo, just some thoughts.
Just gotta have a healthy dose of both. I overland for the mental and hike for the physical or both. I also go to the gym when not camping but also eat healthier at camp. If all else fails. Ozempic 😂
Haha! Ozempic!!!! I met with an endocrinologist and I was wondering, at the end of my visit, if he was going to offer me that. He didn't, said that after 3 more months of exercise that I'd probably drop another 15 lbs. and totally reverse the diabetes.

🤣, it’s a Coke Zero. I know there’s a lot of different studies out there saying that artificial sweeteners are still bad, but my numbers don’t lie. Coke Zero doesn’t spike my blood sugar. Eating berries will more negatively affect my numbers.

There's a million overlanding channels on youtube. People promoting expensive vehicles trailers and 100k set ups. It's getting old fast. That's why softroading the west channel stuck out to me when he had the subaru. Diy low budjet stuff to get people out. That's what it's about
Donald and I were one of the first overlanding channels. Well, back then, no one was really calling it that. Edward shin was an outdoor backpacking channel, and Trail recon was giving out coordinates on their channel 😃. I feel like all the big overlanding channels have the same exact style. Use similar music. Like they have the same people editing their videos for them.
I think the fact you criticize "overlanding" but label your video overlanding is a bit odd. So...yes...it might just be click bait. I have been camping/climbing/hiking and off roading since the 80's but still value my health enough to know that being home (away from the trails) means working out (running, swimming -weights, whatever). Most UA-camrs, ahem, cough, cough "overlanders" do nothing but sit behind a wheel and eat nothing but crap from their Tembotusk Scottles, or "insert latest Overland Expo gadget here". I have lived and traveled extensively in Africa and the middle east and none of these "western" ailments exists. Research when heart disease entered Asian cultures and you will find western fast food,/processed foods oddly entered the picture...to the surprise of...absolutely...no one. "OVERLANDING HAS MADE ME FAT" is the title of a video you did. But was it "overlanding" or the chinese fast food you show in the video that contributes to said issues? Hopefully this is a wake up call to you and others...behind a wheel or a desk it's the same. Not sure how driving a car for a life decision doesn't register as a sedentary life choice. Absolutely no different than a desk job. And... this is coming from someone who has moto'd and driven over 500,000 miles on three continents, is nearly 60 and still weighs what he did in college - as we all should. I just camped in North Texas (Bonham State Park) and still got up at sunrise to go running/walking before the 100 degree heat, came back and made coffee, and got on the road. I really appreciate your comment and the time it took for you to type all that out (not being sarcastic). I wasn't criticizing Overlanding, just complaining. The content is becoming less and less educational and more about highlight reels and expensive builds. Everything else about your comment I completely agree with. You said: "OVERLANDING HAS MADE ME FAT" is the title of a video you did. But was it "overlanding" or the chinese fast food you show in the video that contributes to said issues? But you answer your own question when you say: Not sure how driving a car for a life decision doesn't register as a sedentary life choice. Absolutely no different than a desk job. Yes, I have explained in past videos that the excitement of overlanding and off-roading has replaced the thrill I got from things like Snowboarding, Cycling, paddling and other physical recreation. It's not 100% the reason, but it differently attributed. Well anyways, thank you for your time, and I wish you the same!
@JonDZ_Adventuring True, you can reduce the cost by having a more affordable rig and budget friendly gears. There is no need to buy a $60k+ rig with a bunch of expensive overlanding gears. Overlanding as a hobby is still very expensive and time-consuming in general. BTW, your health comes first, brother. Our outdoor hobbies can wait.
Not sure if you’re being sarcastic. There are a variety of steroids. Some are associated with building muscle mass/fitness (anabolic steroids). Others are prescribed to reduce inflammation in a wide range of diseases.

I did the talking head portion of this video 10 minutes before my shift at work, then I edited this video in my down time (after all my duties were completed of course). I wish I had more time to better explain things, but I just had that one shot. James, I was given Dexamethasone and Prednisone, which are steroidal anti-inflammatory medication to treat Pneumonia and bronchitis. The known side effect is that they lower your immune system and leave you more prone to infection, what I didn't know is that they also SPIKE blood sugar.

Aint that the truth. I would like to see more variety when it comes to the activity for overlanding. The cookie cutter template is TRAIL/CAMP/COOK (on a tembo tusk) and it’s getting old.
I didn’t have much time to edit this video. I drove into work 15 minutes early to record the “talking head” portion, then went into work, fulfilled all my duties, and then did this edit. I was not able to add any additional narration. There’s things I wish I could have expanded on and explained better, so just know that I wasn’t able to.
I wanted to thank many of you for all the support and words of encouragement. I made this video because I know that there’s many of you out there that have BEEN THROUGH THIS, that are going through this, or may have recovered from this (regarding prediabetes/type 2 diabetes).
I’m thankful for hearing the success stories in the below comments.
I wanted to clear up a few things:
1.) overlanding type travel is a “lifestyle” for me. My vehicle is built in a way where all I have to do is add food, water and a change of clothes and I’m ready for an adventure. My vehicle is a big part of my life and my channel content will always include it.
2.) steroid induced diabetes (sudden onset) was a wake up call, and it has motivated me to lose 25-28 lbs. in 2 months through cutting out sugar, simple carbs and exercise. I have also been taking this medication called Jardiance, which doesn’t assist in weight loss very much, it just makes me piss out sugar (which I’m not intaking very much of). I mention that my A1C hit 10.2, but I forgot to mention that I have dropped it to 7.1 in just 2 months. I haven’t been in my 250 lb range in a long time. I’m looking to continue to regain muscle and get my BMI down further (to about 230 lbs.)
3.) My channel has always been about practical car camping (overlanding), and in this video I complain about the over saturation of Overland content and how all the bigger channels all have the same look. I didn’t mean to give such harsh criticism, what I wish I would have said is that MANY OF YOU aren’t watching much of this over saturated content either. How much longer can we stay interested in TRAIL/CAMP/COOK videos? And more importantly, how much longer can YOU stay interested in living the lifestyle of trail/camp/cook without building your trips around an activity or destination?
Your channel isn't just overlanding. It's overlanding in an AWD.

I'll be completely honest: I'm not an overlander, nor am I someone who is an outdoors enthusiast in any way. Hell, I've never been camping once in my life. But I needed a work vehicle that wasn't going to be jarring on the construction site (but can also go comfortably long distances from site to site), stumbled across your video, and as a previous Honda CR-V owner many moons ago was greatly impressed by the capabilities your Honda had that you had put on display. For me personally, you are the poster kid for the Honda Global Light Truck platform and what it is capable of as a consumer putting together what you can with the non-existent aftermarket you had available at the start. And that's what I watch your content for; to see how the aftermarket for this platform is growing, what I can do to my vehicle, and see it's limit through owners like yourself. It was refreshing to see someone other than a race team taking a vehicle that traditionally wouldn't go as far as you've pushed into something that competes with body on frame vehicles on the moderate to difficult off-road trails. And how detailed you get with the nerd stats and documenting every change you do to your vehicle. I've watched the tire size video and the suspension videos on repeat countless times already. So needless to say you and your content are one of the main reasons I bought my Honda Passport, and I've loved it since. I rabidly follow your content, as well as others that I've found through your mentions and social media posts, and has helped me make my Passport something I love to drive. And I do it for work, not recreation, lol.
I love your content, love what you are doing, and have done. But I understand you gotta look out for you and your health first. And maybe it was never your intention to be one of the centers of the Honda Global Light Truck enthusiasts and the off-road Honda modding scene, at least maybe not your primary goal as much as showing your adventures? But regardless of which direction you go from here, I just want to say thank you for all you have done! It's been a fantastic ride literally and figuratively!

Yeah, none of this was my intention, from the start back in 2016, I was just compiling pictures and video footage from my trips and uploading to UA-cam because it was free video storage 😂. I was an active member of car forums and found that it was so much easier to get my ideas across through video. People took a liking to them and that inspired me to put more effort into these. Comments like yours is one of the reasons for me to keep going, you have no idea how much your support means.
John, I've only commented on one of your videos, but I've been watching for awhile. Your health has to come first. I've been without sugar for over a year and a half. I haven't been diagnosed with anything, but my family is riddled with diabetes and hypoglycemia. Do whatever you do. The people that enjoy your content will be around. I recently had a bad car wreck. Hydroplaned off a highway and down a 15 foot drop covered in boulders. Watching your videos is why I ended up buying a 2021 Honda Passport. Watching your videos is why I'm picking up the supplies tomorrow to change the oil, brake fluid, transfer case fluid, and rear differential fluid. I enjoyed your video today. I'm addition to the wreck in March I've had several serious back injuries and an slowly coming to to realization I'll never get to camp or hike the mountains again. Keep doing what you do. You never know who you're going to influence.
Oh, and check into a supplement called berberine. That's going to be my next addition to what I'm taking already.

Thanks for the best wishes, I’m going to need it for this upcoming 17 mile 6400 ft. Hike in 3 weeks. I’m down to 250 right now. The lbs. are really starting to come off now that I’ve rebuilt some muscle.
That’s why I named my channel what I did. My interests are too varied to be defined by a term- and like you, a term that wasn’t even around when I started doing this stuff decades ago. Besides, everything in life can be an adventure if you view it that way. Adventure on and stay healthy. 🤙

I’ve been concentrating on this since November of 2023, getting diabetes is the kick in the butt I needed and I haven’t felt this good since 2020z. thanks for the best wishes.
Your channel keeps it real. The issue I have with all the “overlanding” channels is the constant push of overbuilt and overpriced rigs for the average Joe. Rigs that most people can’t afford to build and more importantly maintain. It’s fantasy and that’s what attracts people I think. Checking out the latest and greatest mods that one wishes to add to their own vehicle but most will never do. I appreciate channels like yours that are real world adventures that the average Joe can do. As far as your health I can relate. I was in a similar situation. I will keep this short and simple for those who face this health problem. Cur your carbs under 60grams a day to start and eat 2x a day. I eat brunch at 11am and dinner at 4pm with an 18hour intermittent fast in between. Many of videos on this topic. Cut out junk carbs (sugar, candy etc.) and get your carbs from vegetables and some fruit. Get your carbs down to 20grams if you can but start at under 100grams and keep trying to drop it lower by 20 grams until you reach 20-40 grams. Avoid processed oils. Meat and fat is health food. I apologize for going on but lots of info on this and it works. It has changed my life. All doctors and Big Pharma want to do is keep us medicated. Good luck Jon and keep it real. 🙏
Well said about the Overlanding space right now, and that’s a solid plan for a healthier life you mentioned. Sugar and carbs are almost unavoidable. They’re in my ranch dressing that goes along with my salad, there’s 2grams in 1 tiny protein bar. That 60g a day goal would be a good thing to follow. My guess is I’m intaking about 30g a day max.
Proud of you for all the hard work on your recovery. I know a lot of people that would not change their diet or routine even for something serious like that, and you've been doing an amazing job. Dude, I’m so glad you checked yourself and you’re working on it. Same thing happened to me last year and I didn’t know. I had 10.1 as well. Now I’ve been working on it and now I manage 7.1-7.2 which isn’t good yet bad it’s much better. I’m hopping by the end of the year I can manage lower 6’s or get it all the way back to normal. Even though this it’s a forever journey now. I follow your channel for 4 years now and I follow you for the content not for the name. Your content and your humble personality are the reason I’m here. I forgot to mention it in the video, but I was able to bring my A1C from 10.2 to 7.1 in a 2 month period.
I was told that weight loss is key, because our insulin receptors get spread thin and don’t work very well if our stomach’s aren’t flat.
Jon, I enjoy your Chanel because it’s more than just off roading videos, you always go in depth about a lot interesting topics and it’s never repetitive. I’m currently in a similar health situation as you. It inspires me to go out and hike as well.

Plan on going on the Half dome one day. I think I can do it. Must be spectacular to say the least.
I did that hike in a single day on exactly July 17, 2017. We disembarked at 4am and reached the summit at 11am. I started training for the hike at 255 lbs. and dropped all the way down to 215 lbs, but I lost the weight through diet, and not from resistance training. Anyways, on the way down, our bodies really started to ache. Feet, knees, shins. It sucked. It took us 13 hours to get back down the mountain. I highly recommend some trekking poles for the way down. Also, bring a water filter.

The popularity has made everything with the work camp, camping, overlanding, and offroading way overpriced. To the point that I'm glad I dont have a RTT on my truck anymore like everyone and their grandma.
I’ve always been against RTTs and slept in the back of my Passport for 3 years of its ownership. Then one day I had a rear cargo basket failure and had to ratchet strap it to my tire carrier and couldn’t easily remove gear out of the cargo area so the wife and I could sleep. We had to cozy up in the front seats in 30F and it was miserable. I was offered a RTT for long term review prior to, and called up that company to see if that offer was still on the table. I love the tent I have, it gets a lot of use.

Greatly appreciate the real talk on “overlanding”. I think there is a key distinction between building an overland style rig to take on a wide variety of outdoor adventures, and actual overlanding in the traditional/pre-U.S. trend definition of the term. Would be great to see more people say they are just going dispersed camping/off-roading/hiking when travel isn’t involved. There is no need to apply a hip (and arguably misused) label to have a good time outdoors.
Also I’ll be curious to see how your hiking content performs. We’ve published a few hiking videos some with stellar imagery… but they’ve always fallen flat with views compared to gear reviews and vehicle based trips. Hope you have more luck than us!!
I still watch Ronny Dahl. He mentions that they just called overland built vehicles "Tourers", basically car campers, hehe! So, on this trip in my video, I decided to drive 4 hours to the Alabama hills to camp out so I could wake up early and hike the first leg of Mt. Whitney. There's alot of content from the drive up and at camp, so my videos won't be purely about hiking, although, when I do Yosemite's half dome this July 2024, I'll definitely be doing a video about the whole experience.

Backpacking around/ near San Diego (all the normal stops- San Gorgonio, Mt Baldy, San Jacinto etc) isn't as fun as it used to be. I also did the “overland” thing long ago. (Car camping). Just about a year ago I got tired of the OL crowd and moved away from it. Don’t get me wrong I still car camp. But I do more hiking and outdoor activities other then driving my truck to a secluded location populated by up a RTT and overland. Sold a lot of the OL gear I thought I needed. Truck is now way lighter and I can go more miles. Take care of yourself and I look forward to more outdoor vids from you.
For me, it’s about the destinations and activities, and moving forward, I’m going to spend less time on my feet than in my seat 😃.

Congrats on getting your Diabetes in check. The weight loss is apparent and really helps going further in outdoor adventuring. It is truly surprising how much sugar/carbs destroy our health. I have Type 2 diabetes as well and it took me 2 years to truly figure it out. A Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) was the ticket to seeing how my body reacted to the foods I ate, I'm currently using the Libre3.
Thanks! I did labs when I had pneumonia and my fasting glucose was 96. One day I walked into work and my fasting glucose was 277!!! I felt so dizzy driving into work, and this was a day after I took 40 mg of prednisone. Checked my A1C and it was 10.2 on 3/20 and then checked it before seeing an endocrinologist on 5/22 and it has dropped to 7.1. He wants me to lose another 15 lbs. and thinks I’ll have this all reversed. I’m cutting sugar out long term though, and hoping I don’t developed high cholesterol.

Thanks bud! Regarding sleep apnea, it’s treated with my cpap machine. It prevents me from snoring and I get the best nights sleep. I’m getting better rest than most people that don’t use one, since it forces filtered air down my nose, even if one nostrll is clogged. On a cold Zero degree night, I can completely cover my face and still breath (since the intake is on the machine). I was in denial for so long, but Wife talked me into getting checked out. Even if I have substantial weight loss, I’ll still use it because it stops the snoring so my Wife gets better sleep, and it gives me better sleep. I know I’ve been using the words “steroids” a lot. But it felt like I was on Performance enhancing steroids the 1st day after using the cpap. It was that life changing for me.

The crazy thing is that although I cut out the simple carbs and sugar, I have increased my caloric intake by eating more protein and substituting rice with things like Hummus. I'm down 25-28 lbs. but my quad muscles are almost back to cycling level of shape. Thanks for the support! You don't know how much it means to me!

Health first. Glad you are honestly speaking out about this. As for “overlanding videos” not tired per say, but noticing that a lot of people and channels have cut back or are getting out beyond just trails to actually traveling and taking “glamping trips”. I think that’s ok. And real life as not so glamorous as it is, is something that at least for me, has made me pause a bit from getting out there or watching the content. Also, I blame genetics and that damn microwave lol. I hope you got rid of it 😄
Nooooooooo! The Microwave is staying!!! 😂😂😂😂. Joking aside, there’s definitely less use for it, but it was perfect for reheating meat I cooked on a skillet, and it’s great as a storage container when not in use.

I do too bud. I had so many days off where I could have went on a trip across the country, but I felt either ill from walking pneumonia, or too dizzy from the steroid induced diabetes. I'm feeling much much better now, and I'm looking forward to my upcoming Colorado trip. Plenty of overlanding content will be made there!

Yeah, hitting 290ish was bad. I was wondering if I was going to break 300 lbs. Weight was so hard for me to lose, but eating carbs and sugar was really holding me back. My Goal is 230 lbs. with more muscle. I'm at 255 lbs now. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

You actually have a great point. Adventuring is more broad and less predictable. WOW 10.2 on your A1c is wow high. Why the steroids before or is it just a term you use. Glad you’re taking care of your health. 🤙🏽
I was being treated for Pneumonia and bronchitis with steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Yeah, A1C went from 10.2 to 7.1 in 2 months. It might even be at a normal range now that it's almost 3 months, but I'm fighting diabetes until it's completely stomped out!
Yes, more of the mixed activities are encouraged. Of course, they will help keep you active which makes you healthier…less time on your a$$ in a SUV seat!

Mostly it's the rice for me. Have to switch to brown rice then hopefully no more rice. Have to transition slowly so my body won't get shock.
I quit cold turkey, I feel incredible! I have so much energy, but that might be from the sudden weight loss. I dropped 25 lbs. in 2 months. I also gained a bit of muscle too, which is heavier than the fat I lost.

Overlanding UA-cam content in general is definitely getting stale. I no longer watch the bigger channels because it’s all about mods, expos, and full time overlanding with expensive rigs, trailers, and gear I will never be interested in. But I still enjoy your channel and a few other smaller ones that stay true their origins.

Thanks for the kind words! I wish I had more time to explain and a narrate things, but that talking head portion at the beginning of the video was made 10 minutes before I clocked into work, and then I did the editing on my down time (after all my duties were completed). One point that I wasn't able to get across is that I'm getting tired of "pure" offroading and camping and I'm getting even more tired of watching people do it on UA-cam. I need to mix other activities into my trips.
A discussion can certainly be had about what you describe regarding overlanding. I built a rig to do all those things but it was never intended to be considered an overlanding rig. But once it was built for the purposes it was, it just became convenient and fun to use the rig for that in the meantime.
I think ALOT of people who "overland" came from a different perspective and over time have become 'bored' with it as that was the sole purpose for their rig.
Anyhoo, just some thoughts.
Just gotta have a healthy dose of both. I overland for the mental and hike for the physical or both. I also go to the gym when not camping but also eat healthier at camp.
If all else fails. Ozempic 😂
Haha! Ozempic!!!! I met with an endocrinologist and I was wondering, at the end of my visit, if he was going to offer me that. He didn't, said that after 3 more months of exercise that I'd probably drop another 15 lbs. and totally reverse the diabetes.

I know there’s a lot of different studies out there saying that artificial sweeteners are still bad, but my numbers don’t lie. Coke Zero doesn’t spike my blood sugar. Eating berries will more negatively affect my numbers.

There's a million overlanding channels on youtube. People promoting expensive vehicles trailers and 100k set ups. It's getting old fast. That's why softroading the west channel stuck out to me when he had the subaru. Diy low budjet stuff to get people out. That's what it's about
Donald and I were one of the first overlanding channels. Well, back then, no one was really calling it that. Edward shin was an outdoor backpacking channel, and Trail recon was giving out coordinates on their channel 😃.
I feel like all the big overlanding channels have the same exact style. Use similar music. Like they have the same people editing their videos for them.

I think the fact you criticize "overlanding" but label your video overlanding is a bit odd. So...yes...it might just be click bait.
I have been camping/climbing/hiking and off roading since the 80's but still value my health enough to know that being home (away from the trails) means working out (running, swimming -weights, whatever). Most UA-camrs, ahem, cough, cough "overlanders" do nothing but sit behind a wheel and eat nothing but crap from their Tembotusk Scottles, or "insert latest Overland Expo gadget here". I have lived and traveled extensively in Africa and the middle east and none of these "western" ailments exists. Research when heart disease entered Asian cultures and you will find western fast food,/processed foods oddly entered the picture...to the surprise of...absolutely...no one.

Hopefully this is a wake up call to you and others...behind a wheel or a desk it's the same. Not sure how driving a car for a life decision doesn't register as a sedentary life choice. Absolutely no different than a desk job. And... this is coming from someone who has moto'd and driven over 500,000 miles on three continents, is nearly 60 and still weighs what he did in college - as we all should.
I just camped in North Texas (Bonham State Park) and still got up at sunrise to go running/walking before the 100 degree heat, came back and made coffee, and got on the road.

Yes, I have explained in past videos that the excitement of overlanding and off-roading has replaced the thrill I got from things like Snowboarding, Cycling, paddling and other physical recreation. It's not 100% the reason, but it differently attributed. Well anyways, thank you for your time, and I wish you the same!

Overlanding is not cheap. Unless you make millions on your channel, it is very hard to sustain it.
It can be cheap. We don't need to drive expensive vehicles that are on the bigger channels. Buy an old Subaru, sleep in the back :)
@JonDZ_Adventuring True, you can reduce the cost by having a more affordable rig and budget friendly gears. There is no need to buy a $60k+ rig with a bunch of expensive overlanding gears.
Overlanding as a hobby is still very expensive and time-consuming in general.
BTW, your health comes first, brother. Our outdoor hobbies can wait.

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic. There are a variety of steroids. Some are associated with building muscle mass/fitness (anabolic steroids). Others are prescribed to reduce inflammation in a wide range of diseases.

I did the talking head portion of this video 10 minutes before my shift at work, then I edited this video in my down time (after all my duties were completed of course). James, I was given Dexamethasone and Prednisone, which are steroidal anti-inflammatory medication to treat Pneumonia and bronchitis. The known side effect is that they lower your immune system and leave you more prone to infection, what I didn't know is that they also SPIKE blood sugar.
it’s rebranding something that already has a name for it so they can market and monetize it better. it’s dumb but, that’s capitalism for ya. re-invent the wheel, give it a new name and put a new (expensive) price tag on it.
Aint that the truth. I would like to see more variety when it comes to the activity for overlanding. The cookie cutter template is TRAIL/CAMP/COOK (on a tembo tusk) and it’s getting old.
