  • I interviewed Jay Alto who’s worked with MrBeast, Ryan Trahan, Colin and Samir, and more. Thanks Canva for sponsoring, use this link for 45-day extended free trial of Canva Pro: canva.me/jonyoushaei
Jay is a master of thumbnails, creativity, and now has a UA-cam channel of his own. In our conversation, Jay breaks down the 4 elements of a great thumbnail, how to find better ideas, and the weeks of prep-work that go into a Ryan Trahan video.Plus he roasts some of UA-cam’s best and worst thumbnails, from Mark Rober to MrBeast to my interview with Logan Paul.
Shoutout to Jay for being an awesome guest, definitely check out his YT channel: / @thejayalto

So much of the content of “how to make it on UA-cam” videos like this I’ve come to realize is almost exclusive directed towards travelogue and personality based channels - and the “tips”, as it were, are less applicable to channels outside those categories

0:19: 🎥 This video is an interview with Jay, a UA-cam growth expert, who discusses the importance of psychology and contrast in thumbnails and how he helps creators find viral video ideas.
2:51: ! The video discusses the practice of creating a playlist of potential video ideas on UA-cam for inspiration.
5:33: 🎥 Creating compelling thumbnails and titles is crucial for capturing viewers' attention on UA-cam.
8:39: 🎥 The video discusses optimizing the thumbnail of a UA-cam video to attract more clicks.
11:06: 💀 Jimmy is in a coffin and looks scared, wearing a black tuxedo, with day two indicating it's not a one-time event.
14:07: 💡 Contrast is the biggest driver of color in UA-cam thumbnails, and adding a different color background could have emphasized Logan even more.
16:51: 📚 Simplifying speech doesn't mean dumbing it down, and using big words doesn't make someone a better writer or creator.

I’m really disappointed in the thumbnails you chose for him to review. You chose the most popular channels on the platform whose video is a spectacle and will obviously get 50 million views no matter what.
What about a channel with 25k views consistently and one video pops off with 278k views?
What about a channel with 10k subs who is scratching their heads as to why they can’t get more traction?
Why not a dead UA-cam channel who is still trying to regain the traction they once had?
Talking about mr beast in a “how to UA-cam” video is like a business book talking about Apple. Every god damn one does it and it’s the same boring one note.
I’d love to see a video with this guy actually giving applicable advice to applicable size channels. That would have been so beneficial to your audience. If you look at my page, I make nothing like mr. Beast video, and I have no desire to. But that doesn’t mean I can’t be successful.

imo This format is so stale already. The thumbnail obsession, first 10 seconds of intense presentation is now old and cringe. Its obviously cool when Mr Beast still does it 'cause he was the trendsetter and has owned it. Anyone who wants to replicate that kind of success have to focus on originality and substance, be a trendsetter rather than trendchaser. Trendchasers don't get too far, it's okay to get some initial boost in views but eventually you have to abandon the rules and make your own.
