Good interview. Since Neil seems to be making the rounds right now I'm hoping someone with an upcoming interview opportunity will see this comment and maybe ask my own question: Have you considered bringing back some form of the community video response feature? That is the feature that most made UA-cam feel like a community 10+ years ago. Especially in the DIY space, to make a tutorial video and then have a column of video responses from people that tried it out was really special. Likewise I'd like to see a feature similar to TikTok's video comment replies, where clicking on a comment in mobile gives the option to record a short response with your phone camera. These responses should live in a separate place on your channel so as to not clutter the regular upload or shorts tab, and likewise not annoy subscribers with frivolous notifications.
fr video responses goated
You're trying too hard, buddy.
I don’t even remember seeing “community video responses” ever be a thing. That must’ve only been in like the first couple years of UA-cam’s existence before they killed it.
You forgot to ask to bring back UA-cam's 2008 profile customization similar to MySpace from the early 2000s
Ludwig slowly going from CEO to CEO of UA-cam. Soon it would be a UA-cam CEO policy to be recognised by the Ludwig to cement their position.
The next CEO : So, here's my checklist of things to do.
First, increase the number of ads. Okay.
Second, promote UA-cam premium more. Reasonable.
Third, meet the Ludwig? Huh...

He’d be like the pope
Lol nah
Ludwig getting a huge ass smile when he found out that Neal watches his videos was so wholesome
Reminds me that the reason he left Twitch is because he felt irrelevant to the company. Like another cog in the wheel. Clearly UA-cam still values his contributions and sees him as a driver for creative input.
@@OPUPyeah
@@OPUP this. I wholeheartedly believe UA-cam cares in a way that twitch hasn't been able to yet. Dan Clancy is doing his best, but he has to overcome all of the bureaucracy and infrastructure that twitch made as a business that doesn't valve creators as much.

This interview taking place in transit, with daylight and outdoor scenery passing by is quite refreshing, both visually and likely for the participants in the interview getting some sunlight. Natural lighting of course looks great, but I think it also has the benefit of giving yall energy throughout the interview. Pro strats, just wanted to say.
My biggest takeaway from this is kudos to both Lud and Neal for navigating this interview. It became pretty obvious early on that Neal has to bite his tongue often with a lot of Ludwigs questions, and he does a good job navigating those questions in a very political manner. Neal makes a nothing answer sound sincere. Ludwig also does a good job picking up on that and not pressing for a better answer since he knows Neal can't give it to him.
This!

13:00 he has the window open? What an audio nightmare! Props to the sound editor for getting it so clean
That's a great point!!! It sounds so nice in the video
Most new microphones have excellent Ambient noise cancelling depending on the setup. Great job regardless.
u know its not ur $5 mic
@@rayafk8502 I'll say this as an audio tech myself, you're on the right track for studio microphones running through a software setup, or like an airpod mic with their software onboard, but *most* recording mics have to be fixed in post with software. (Or from what I can tell for this scenario, may have a very small area that they record sound from that is built-in to the physical microphone itself.)
I don't mean to come off as condescending, so please don't take it like that, but I like sharing some of the mechanics behind audio recording and dispelling some "myths" per se that might lead someone to pick up a studio mic off the rack at a guitar center or buy on Amazon and be frustrated that it doesn't immediately sound like a professional UA-camrs' mic :)
Does anyone else notice how incredible the editing of this is? There are at least three different cameras inside the truck, and at least two cameras outside around the truck, but, still, the sound is perfectly in sync. There are even a few times the cab of the truck is shown from the front, and you can tell that the lips are still synced up with the vocal recording. I thought this was all amazing.
Good to see small time CEOs interacting with BIG BOY UA-cam streamers like LUDWIG.
He loves giving those who need it the spotlight
@@RyanSoltaniYeah but UA-cam’s ceo doesn’t need the spotlight for ruining UA-cam
I agree with the shorts. I could watch hours of videos on UA-cam and feel content, but if I get sucked into a shorts hole I gotta put the phone down and walk away feeling unproductive
i also related so hard with lud when he said that. There are occasional days where i doom scroll through shorts for 2-3 hours and i feel like crap once i finally decide to end it, but i can EASILY watch a 2h long vid, or back to back bunch of videos for longer than that
They do nibble off little pieces of my psyche with each scroll.
If you install UA-cam with Revanced there's a patch to take the shorts feature out of UA-cam entirely
can i ask: is it just a youtube shorts thing or do you guys also feel it with tiktok and reels? cause i do. and i think this is more of a psychology thing related to fast consuming media and the damage to the brain by fucking up the attention span than a 'the algorithm is shoving me shit' WHICH HAPPENS, but i dont think restricting to content you are interested in would change the feelings of doom scrolling. any thoughts?
@@j.hadens I personally enjoy scrolling tiktok because I feel that I learn a lot more current events info or the videos are generally more captivating, but with the ads every like 4 scrolls it gets to me a lot quicker than it used to. But also like Lud said, the way people make UA-cam shorts to loop annoys me (probably because the delay in the loop makes it sound stupid? lol) or when they say check out the full video for the result is infuriating. Same if a tiktok is multiple parts.
Fr
Fucking dead at the ending lmao. Wonderful interview
Never thought I'd see you here 😂
This was quality. Also. Ludwig is so primed for tv like there’s no awkwardness or silence at any moment and so naturally transitions to topics and he speaks well. I would've liked him to ask about ads. creators love them, viewers hate them so if theres any way to resolve this. ads are becoming much more invasive and seem like they will grow to be more invasive.
If you are using a free product, you will get ads. This will never change. Subscribe to youtube premium or get over it.
You can even skip channel ad reads *without getting an ad right before and right after*
Use YT Vanced.
It blocks ads, sponsors, and can do so much more. (Fully customizable)
Edit: you can even change the color of the line that tells you how far you are in the video lol
so random.
I really relate to what Ludwig says at 22:40 about shorts, you don't really get any satisfaction out of it in the long term. You may watch it equally long as normal video content, but you don't take anything away from it. It's just time lost and it makes me feel bad, yet it is so addictive
On god
Its funny he says loops piss him off when a lot of his shorts loop
I wish I could literally opt out of shorts.
They’re addictive, often negative, and honestly I don’t think any psychologist would say they’re good for you.

This series is the absolute best of your content in my opinion. I feel like you do an incredibly job of humanizing high up figures. No matter how qualified someone is for a job, they're still just one person who has ideas and is trying to manage a huge company. It also gives a great update on what the platform is focused on the most. I don't think the platform will ever be perfect, but they should focus on not falling behind on issues that matter the most.

That’s incredible i missed that lol
bro do you watch Arpit Bala? im 100% sure I saw you there
Amazing as always. As someone who has been a daily user of the site since 2005 I have seen youtube go through many changes. I remember when youtube had a dating site aspect. Biggest changes I miss though are the 5 star rating system, video replies, and messaging. But I think the weirdest part to me is not that long ago I could recognize every large channel with 1 million subscribers. Then Vine shutdown and things changed quickly. I come across channels with 10 million subs that I have never heard of and that just blows my mind. But the other big change is for over a decade and a half the people who made youtube were just the man. We had no faces to attach to them. This recent shift of having the CEOs come out and do events and podcasts has been huge and feels good. But it still makes me a little sad just as we finally got to know susan she left but Neal he seems pretty cool and I really hope he keeps making the site better.
Changes I would want to see, go back to more relevant recommendations, when I search for a video stop giving completely off topic things. Some times I want to learn about something I know nothing about. When searching for "quantum computing" there is no reason I should be getting recommendations for the latest Yard video talking about aimen peeing on cats or something. Or get the latest mogul mail about some random stream drama.
I would also love if youtube didn't slow down based on what browser I am using.
Oh also please allow us to rewind/scrub through shorts on desktop.
It's always interesting to me when someone will bring up a content creator that has like 10 million subscribers. They watch every single video they upload, and that creator seems like such a big deal to them. But then they find out I've never heard of them, and they're absolutely shocked. And vice versa. There are a few creators I watch that I think are HUGE, and my brain just automatically assumes "well they have 10 million subscribers, they're famous!" and then I mention their name to a friend, and they have no idea what I'm talking about. It's not a bad thing by the way, I like that there is such a variety, and the landscape of channels is so vast.
Also, you can scrub through shorts on desktop. Well, at least on Firefox you can, I'm not sure about other browsers. Once I click somewhere on the video screen (which pauses it), and then click again to unpause, the scrub bar on the bottom will become visible.
This was an absolutely beautiful interview in all aspects. Huge props to Neal and Ludwig. Great watch
Ludwig has got to make more interviews like this, it's so refreshing and grounded
Mogul Moves gotta make a video about this video

More of these chill interviews would be great! :)
2:22 holy shit there is more cameras in there than car
i would hope so. he is recording a highly produced video
Bro got kitted out
Lol it looks like a lot but there's only 3 cameras with each camera having 2 suction mounts
If I am being completely honest, this confrontation is the perfect podcast. I'm happy Ludwig tried really hard not to disturb this interview with Neal. This is an amazing thing to listen in the background since all they are doing is drinking coffee and driving in a truck even though the truck does make some racket.
This is one of the most well shot and thought out interviews I have seen on the platform. You did a really good job Lud!
"i smoke weed and play valorant on Thursday's" LMFAO TRUE
"Tucked in a truck with Ludwig" seems like a good interview series
Send this boy to the top.
The 28:58 shot of the kei truck and the transitions preceding are absolutely gorgeous and elevate this interview video so much
I did not think I would watch an hour-long interview... But the way you put this together 100%%% makes me sit down and watch the whole thing.
Ludwig’s an impressively well-rounded guy. He’s like the ultimate IRL version of a created character that you evenly distributed all of your stat points into.
Yeah no he's both one of the most articulate and novel creators on the platform and simultaneously a fit gym-goer with a long-term relationship and a decent amount of life skills. AND he's got cats. It's kinda crazy.
bro used his journalism skills in this one
This was a great video. As someone who is chronically on UA-cam, it was absolutely lovely listening to a CEO give a bit more than the expected cookie cutter answers that a company gives out.
to go from daily uploads laughing at reddit memes, to such high quality videos as your opera song and this, is truly very inspiring dubbin

@@kevinfought wow, what a long time ago that was now
Loved that he asked the question about short enjoyment. Realising how much time I spent watching shorts made me rethink the entire way I use my phone. I wish I could opt out of seeing them
If you turn off you’re watch history it’ll make it harder to watch
I think you can disable them with revanced
You can use "revanced" to disable/enaable functionality
If you just delete them every time you see them (i think it’s the not interested button) then they won’t show you shorts in recommendations. It will still come up in subscription feed though, so just don’t watch them if you’re scrolling through your subscriptions.
Although, they absolutely should add the option to disable shorts and community posts. As well as infinite scrolling. They should encourage and enable people to limit their own ability to be addicted to their product.
It always amazes me how well spoken top executives are. I know they’re in those positions for a reason but they are truly so eloquent in the way they answer and receive questions
This was really well done. It’s not often I watch this long of a video without skipping through some parts of it, really hope you do more interviews like this in the future.

Glad to see how based Neal is.
I'm glad he pressured Susan to remove dislikes, it made the platform safer for creators.
@scrittlw hope that's sarcasm because the dislike being removed is stupid and a time waster if you're looking for a tutorial

Really cool interview! Personally as someone who is now 18, I have grown up with UA-cam has part of my life. This has always been my favourite app/website but recently I have had a few problems that if no one reads this, I'd like to put out there.
My recommended feed does not feel as exciting as it once did. For years, I have had no problem going to the home page and instantly seeing something I want to watch. Now, there are some things I want to watch and the recommendations aren't completely random but it feels too forced.
I will get recommended the same videos over and over again until it feels like I have to watch them. I also don't know whether perhaps it's more on the content creation side that videos don't seem very creative/captivating/interesting as often as they used to (ofc yours are great Ludwig lol). I think perhaps it is generally just that the internet has become more vapid and robotic than what it used to be.
Hope everyone is doing well
Hey!
That's good for you actually, keep choosing mindfully.
That said, I still find it captivating, my favourite social media for over a decade. I'm on the phone.
First, UA-cam's algorithm has never been known as the best 'research companion' or how to put this, it's always been rather conservative. Sure there are these random old viral videos - you know the ones, short with simple title millions of views seemingly out of the blue. Apart from that it will keep you in known waters.
For me sometimes searching for some old content I remember that I consider evergreen it helps reviving the algorithm. Then you can directly reject some videos by clicking 'not interested', I almost never do that tho, but if you're annoyed..
Scrolling some Shorts might also be innovative, but don't overdo it, it's like a last resort haha.
Sometimes I also search for some random word or concept, like just some noun or something I'm not kidding, for when you feel adventurous. Search will show you how broad the site is. Yea there's plenty of sh't, but it's possible to discover a new small channel, will give you plenty of new wind.
If you want, it's possible to keep it fresh, that's all. I'm currently blessed here and there with like suuper new channels, exciting to me.
If you read this, hope it helps some, stay strong
I feel like we didn't get any real answers from the CEO aside from "We listen to our creators and community". Everything coming out of his mouth was so sanitized and sounded like it could have been a tweet from the YT Twitter page.

This was a great interview. Ludwig and Neal made the conversation feel so organic. But Ludwig being honest with him about YTs progress being slow was great!
The dankpods music in between is amazing, just a little disappointed that it didn't change after replacing the hu-duh-6-hunges
by ol' mate senny
Lol I felt the same. Kinda miss the shitty quality music
i wondered why i knew that song when i heard it, gahdamn thanks for saving me 5 more minutes of my life
Damn a 40mil dollar contract is worth it for Ludwig
Who would turn down 40mil tho, that is a life changing amount of money.
@@DarkStarCoreX I agree
This guys a good interviewer, he should start a podcast or something
28:57 when it cuts to the car made me laugh out loud after playing beautiful clips to see that dingy thing
Lud is such a good journalist. He's just such a likable guy and that makes the conversations feel so natural and cool. Great video!
Wow. That is so true. Ludwig says "Doom Scrolling" when it comes to shorts. The fact that the only thing you take away from shorts is how much time as passed by. I felt that in every bone in my body.
23:44 he does this on his shorts by saying at the end “and that’s how… starts over I got scammed by such and such”
You can hate something while partaking in it. If it's the more effective thing to do, then you absolutely would want/need to do it, even if you're against it (to an extent, of course). Don't hate the player, hate the game and all that. Same with people that are like "Hasan is a socialist and yet he has all this money hurhur gotcha" like yeah, he participates in the system, because that is what the system is like, but he also actively doesn't like that system
Yea he does lol
