    Her reverse dieting videos pulled me out of disordered eating and I truly believe the knowledge her videos taught me saved my life and my fitness journey. I’m about to do mini cut cycles after spending 6 months sorting my metabolism- her recommendation again. Her over pushing supplements does grate occasionally- but she is solid and I have nothing but thanks for her!

    Thank you so much for this video! I LOVE what you added to the discussion 🙌🏻 Mindset is sooooo key on a health & fitness journey and diet culture has corrupted so much of the space. It's so great to hear other people talking about it like this.
    I just wanna address some things I see in the comments here because a lot of things that I've said has been taken waaay out of context (as tends to happen on the internet lol) and I don't want people getting the wrong idea 😂 I definitely talk about supplements a lot and share what I've learned about them in a lot of videos. I also do partner with a few select supplement companies. But I very regularly get messages from people about supplements and what kinds of things I recommend so a lot of my audience is actively requesting that kind of content, which is why I address it in so many videos. If I just wanted money, there are plenty of other companies I could partner with that would/could pay me more lmaooo. Also, I try to make this clear in my videos (but maybe I don't say it often enough), but I don't believe supplements are necessary for most people. I just personally LOVE learning about them and reading the science on them (even if the science isn't 100% conclusive). Finding a new cool supplement just excites me and keeps me motivated in my fitness journey. That is why I take a lot of supplements and share what I learn--simply because it's a hobby and passion of mine. I understand that not everyone cares about supplements or wants to invest in them and that is totally okay! I'm 100% here for it if you never want to add any supplements. I just love doing the research and experimenting and trying new things :)

    I appreciate the motivation vs. dedication talk. In the midst of my depressive episode some time ago, I couldn’t even get myself to brush my teeth because I didn’t “feel like it.” I think there is a corner of the internet that I once loved that was like “listen to your body” “do what you need to do” “don’t do anything that you don’t want” and essentially do what makes you feel good regardless of what that is. And that can feed into A LOT of bad habits and unhealthy ones. I’ve since stoped asking if I feel like doing something and just do it.

    I got some actual new information from Marisa on how the menstrual cycle might relate to working out. Literally had not heard anyone talk about it. Also her video about "getting abs at a higher body fat percentage" is just spitting facts and the approach in it absolutely worked for me.
    Otherwise I almost completely stopped watching her, her videos are too rambly for my taste. Plus the pushing of pricey and non-scientific supplements is a turn off for me.

    crazy timing of this- I used to watch her every video two or three years back, and for a long time forgot she even existed. I remembered a week or so ago and checked out her channel: every single recent video was one I'd seen before remade. 'Meals to lose weight' 'what is reverse dieting?' 'how to get lean' etc; I think she must cycle through new followers every year or so, because I don't see how anyone could keep watching the same videos ad infinitum

    • @RoastedSaltedPeanut
      @RoastedSaltedPeanut 2 роки тому +25

      Same! Her content became too much about "flat stomach, big butt" for me to keep following her. She was a big reason I started intermittent fasting. I had to remove myself from any restrictive diet content to fully heal my relationship with food and she was one of the channels I unsubscribed to. Nothing she promoted was outrageous but I couldn't keep watching creators who eat 2 meals a day, are constantly trying to cut and just generally fixated on "healthy foods". I only watch food related videos from people like Natacha where she eats whatever she wants and promotes making nutritious and delicious food. That is a very personal thing though, she generally promotes pretty good information, I just needed to move away from any sort of diet for weight loss content

    • @thelostpumpkin4146
      @thelostpumpkin4146 2 роки тому +20

      @@RoastedSaltedPeanut I agree that most of her stuff is good, but she was also quite keen to jump on stuff with more shaky science which is another point where she lost me. I was in the middle of a bachelors of food and nutritional health, and so her talking about bone broth fasts and adaptogenic coffee got very stale very quickly

    • @mignondejager7286
      @mignondejager7286 2 роки тому +12

      @TheLostPumpkin i stopped watching her for those exact reasons. Her advice can sometimes be super gimicky. As a scientist her whole "nerdy" persona only came off as know-it-all to me and not really as someone who does critical research before hitching her wagon to an idea. That said, she can actually do pull ups and i have yet to get to one so ..

    • @danielbrown001

      “I think she must cycle through new followers every year or so, …”
      Yep. This is actually how the fitness industry works in general. New people get into fitness every year and they have the same questions as the people who came in last year. And newer videos will be more likely to pop up in the algorithm and be clicked on by new people. So some fitness channels have figured out they can literally just recycle their old content over and over to grab the attention of new people. Not every channel does this, but if you stick around UA-cam fitness long enough, you’ll see people you follow remaking old videos all over.

    I followed her for a few months because I liked some of her messaging but it became a bit apparent that she was pushing a lot of supplements, adaptogenic non-science based herbs that are basically placebos. She also pushes use of that four sigmatic mushroom supplement/4S protein products that are again pricey and not proven to work, it felt disingenuous

    Thanks for calling out the inappropriate touching there. Very positive mental health message here from her (and you further backing it up) on not letting negative emotions drive decisions and not being so hard on yourself…which as you know, stuff I struggle with quite a bit, but making progress!

    I have such a confusing time watching her videos. While there is nothing outrageous about what I’ve watched and I’ve watching quite a bit, I feel like she is an example of what I don’t want which is someone who makes fitness their whole life. Like, I refused to go to the gym cause everyone I saw who did online made it a hobby/borderline obsession. I want to be in shape but I don’t want to spend time outside of the gym thinking about protein per gram, form, time under tension, designing and redesigning workout plans, talking about my workout split in real life conversation. It’s just that a lot of what she says (not making excuses) is easier to do when it is your job than if you are on a journey in addition to a totally unrelated job.

    I have a question, if I may: what is the deal with Pilates? The fans of Pilates insists that it will magically transform your body, meanwhile the muscle bros insists that it only does something for you if you’re recovering from severe injuries. So is it worthwhile or nah?

    • @dundeedebbie
      @dundeedebbie 2 роки тому +1

      Hey, I’ve been doing Pilates a fair bit for the last few years. When I went to classes at the gym, I’d use it as a warm-up(!) before my usual workout and I found my posture and mobility was fantastic to jump straight into my specific gym exercises after a class. I’m not at the gym currently, and doing pay-by-session Pilates Reformer classes for now. This means I’m not working towards my specific strength goals (like pull ups) but I’m still moving, still working on what I understand to be good muscle dominance (glutes stronger than quads - feel free to correct me if I’m misled on this though!), and still working on posture things like hip alignment during movements, shoulder alignment, core engagement. I’ve found a big difference between teachers. Some focus heavily on planks, glue bridges and lactic acid (not that they say that), and some do a wide variety of movements and talk about posture and breathing etc so much I’m too mentally tired to do a workout afterwards! That’s my experience to date.

    • @nbelferzwaiman
      @nbelferzwaiman 2 роки тому +2

      I find pilates (and I am a pilates teacher, so obviously going to be a bit biased) is great a an addition to your work outs, it focused on functional movement and training our muscles to be longer+ stronger, vs bigger bulking aesthetic muscles. (which doesn't mean one is better than the other. exercising for smaller range, brute strengths and for sculpting and aesthetics is not wrong!
      I taught in a gym for a very long time and noticed those same muscle bros weren't able to do half the exercises. (just like I can't lift what they can lift) When we train for visible muscle, a lot of the time we're targeting the more superficial muscles (closer to the skin, easier to target), in pilates we try to focus on the more superior muscles (superior meaning, deeper, your stability and support muscles). We also focus on mobility and trying to even out our sides so we're not wildly stronger on one or the other. We target muscles that don't look good, but are important for our body's basic daily functions and for aging bodies to have less pain. This is why I think both are great. If we have a stronger support structure, strong abs, better active range of movement, surely our performance at the gym where we're lifting heavy can only be improved, safer, and more productive. That being said, if you only have time for one, pick the one that aligned with your body and life goals.

      @@nbelferzwaiman I hear what you're saying, and I'm curious if it only applies to physique sports like bodybuilding, or if it's also true for strength sports like powerlifting, olympic weightlifting, or strongman. A lot of those athletes don't look like classic "muscle bros" but they're way stronger. I personally do both powerlifting and yoga (I've heard that pilates evolved in part from yoga, but I'm sorry if I'm wrong) and find that they complement each other well, but I do think the core work in each is not that different as both focus on internal stabilizing muscles over visible abs. What are your thoughts?

      @@herodotusgreenleaf6776 What an interesting question! I'm going to be super honest, and just discuss what I have anecdotal evidence for. Please take this with a grain of salt and I don't have any studies in front of me. (Not sure if they would even exist)
      I think fundamentally sports have a 'focus' like swimming is very shoulder and upper body dominant, something like soccer is lower body dominant, kickboxing is both (and of the three perhaps the most 'balanced' so to speak with additional focus on mobility+ strength because what use is a kick if your hamstrings are so tight that you can't reach your opponent.) This focus dictates how an athlete trains, rests and eats. With a lot of sports, we don't see huge bodies because huge bodies aren't efficient for many of those movements.
      Larger bodies with bigger muscles are ideal for things like weightlifting, powerlifting etc. Often times aesthetic or body builder training crosses over with these training methods. The thing is, a powerlifter or olympic lifter wouldn't generally do a bulk and then a cut. A cut isn't efficient. proper nutrition and enough of it is the best way to fuel a body for consistent performance. 'Showing the muscle' isn't the goal. Another thing that really helps when lifting heavy over and over at a high level, knowing that you must be able to repeat your performance in order to beat your opponent? Training those stabilizing muscles, those core and back deep muscles and learning how to be efficient with the energy we expend. Their bodies are often larger because fat protects our joints and organs. If you want to lift heavy, very, very heavy for long periods of time without destroying the joints, you have to fuel properly and not be afraid of a larger body.
      In my head that is the key difference between Body building and 'athletic' for lack of a better word, weightlifting/ strength displays.
      And yes! Pilates evolved from gymnastics, yoga, martial arts, and was heavily influenced by how dancers train. You're right on the money. Stability in the core is a fundamental part of most sports and more regimented physical pursuits in my experience, I always get a bit confused when it falls by the wayside despite being so important for being able to move into old age. (maybe that's the anatomy nerd inside me coming out)
      edit: that was a novel. I hope I covered the question in the right way!

    I really hate that "meditation is my medication sweater", we really need to stop acting like medicine is bad or implying relying on medicine instead of food, movement, mindfulness etc to manage health is less admirable. She's also constantly shilling adaptogens on her channel, I think she promotes a lot of pseudo science to her followers.

      I take meds and practice meditation. I know which one is science-based and does the most for me. I can live pleasantly without meditation. Without medication it won't be pleasant.

      Obviously if you have a severe condition where it requires medication to continue living, yeah take it, but I think when she says that, she refers to average people who do not have conditions where medications is absolutely necessary. A lot of people rely on over the counter pills bc it’s “easier”, whereas lifestyle changes could drastically decrease or eliminate the need for medications (like Tylenol for flu, incorporating more whole foods and relaxation will benefit you when the Tylenol is a temporary relief). I’m not sure why people underestimate meditation- this is a method thats thousands of years old, to improve your well being and a deeper connection to yourself. You can take medication and meditate, you can meditate to relieve anxiety, to ease pain, everything. Don’t underestimate your body’s natural way of healing with these natural remedies. Go see a medical doctor if you feel something is wrong- it’s amazing that it’s easy access here in North America and other parts of the world, and can do a lot to save your life. you can also save your own life with food, mediation, mindfulness, and exercise

      I LOVE meditation. The range of benefits, both proven and anecdotal, is amazing. It feels great. It should be taught and adopted nationally.
      But.
      Medicine is there, and it works, and it's very effective most of the time. To act like it's not a viable choice is irresponsible.
