    Met Nina and Louise at Tower Records during a record signing. I left because it was super crowded. Happened to be close by hours later and stopped back in for the hell of it. They were still there making sure they met everyone that wanted to say hi. They were so nice. Probably the nicest musicians I’ve ever met.

      I remember hearing , "Seether" @ the Firehouse in Denver as I popped into the kitchen serving tables. Loved, "can't fight the Seether", sounded so sexy & yet, raw & driven. Just listened to the studio version as I was gifted the Glastonbury '95 performance my phone gave me. Didn't like anything but "can't fight..." back then & much prefer the live version but a Great song on all counts. Love those bad ass girls.

    Lived around the corner from Louise in 91-92ish...used to see her and the rest of the band at shows and parties in and around Wicker Park/Rogers Park. There was a buzz in Chicago due to Pumpkins auccess and there were a ton of bands (including mine) trying to catch that wave. I recall talking to Louise at a party and she told me Veruca Salt had a gig in a few days at Double Door (RiP) ...I had no clue she was even in a band at that time. Went and saw them and they were magic. They catch shit for not "paying their dues" etc and honeslty I resented their quick rise back in the day....but I saw one of their first shows and they had "it" right out of the gate. American Thighs is brilliant (hate that they get pigeonholed as the Seether band...they are much much more than that song...much like Blind Melon are NOT the No Rain Band and Janes Addiction are not just the Jane Says/Been caught stealing band) ....I caught them again a few times on tour after the album came out and then 8 Arms came out and didnt have the same magic (in my mind....a few strong songs but they lost some of the dynamics that made them greeat on that album)...then they split...I saw them a few times when Louise kept it going...it was never the same. Then finally when they got back together and put out Ghost Notes and the other singles....they picked it right back up as if it were 1995 again. Chatted with Louise again after seeing them on the Ghost Notes dates and they seemed happier and more content than I ever remember them. So...good for them I hope they continue. Brilliant live band

    When Henry was asking them about how many 'dues' they paid, how long they 'gigged' by van, I wonder if they realized how stark the contrast in their and Henry's touring history. They spent 'a few months' in the van, Henry and the various iterations of Black Flag spent years upon grueling years crisscrossing the country, to oftentimes thankless crowds.

    • @frozenlake1215
      @frozenlake1215 3 роки тому +15

      Paying road dues should never be a competition. I suspect Veruca Salt are more than aware that Henry toured in vans way more than they did. I don't think they were trying to say that they put in as many pre-fame miles as he did, but what should they have done? Debased themselves by saying, "Sorry, we're fakers who never lifted an amp in our lives"? That's not the truth. They gave an honest and humble answer to Henry's question.

    • @Baddhamster
      @Baddhamster 3 роки тому +3

      @@frozenlake1215 Niely said. At the end of the day, they made good records, so did Henry and Black Flag. It ain't a competition, as you rightly say. I'm glad they both exist. My butler used to load my equipment and serve me cocktails on my private jet when I was starting out...

      Yeah it wasn’t their fault that they got picked up so quickly. I know people used to call them industry plants but sounds like the vultures were circling from the first few months.

    Besides their amazing harmonies, people sometimes overlook the phenomenal amount of changes that packed the punches in those amazing songs! I mean, like the Beatles and Frank Black, V.S. would write these infectiously, catchy tunes with like 7 changes in a 3 minute song! Who does that? VerucaSalt does that, and amazingly kicks ass doing that, and whenever I hear American Thighs, 8 arms(not to mention Resolver& Everything my hero Louise has done) I get to turn it up and friggin' love the world! Phenomenal interview!!! So great to see them all in the same room. I'm not alone when I say "With David Bowie" could be one of the best (if not THE best) Veruca Salt song. Still my all-time favorite.

    Minty fresh was a dope label. The cardigans, komeda, Tahiti 80. They had a little Swedish thing going on. Shit I still listen to komeda all the time.

    Love the. Ghost Notes is incredible, and there were so many great comeback records from '90s bands' that year (Faith No More, The Muffs)

    I feel what makes this a great interview
    Is Henry's questions... but they where ready to open up. Be honest and have full & answers with depth. As far as vinyl records. How many of us remember how careful we handled them before putting them on the turntable? It was like we were preparing for something epic. We took our time not to scratch it, or we laid the needle down softly. Almost a meditional ritual with an answer to our young teenage minds to guide us fir questions we would never asked our friends or PARENTS . LOL

    Well. Found this today in 2024! With Louise’s new album out I have been on a retro Veruca Salt binge, rewatching videos & such.
    So THIS - how cool to have Rollins interviewing Nina & Louise! I like his questions, and the fact that it was about the music, the process, the business - nothing condescending or tawdry, no trying to dig up dirt. Great job by everyone. 🙌🙌🙌

    Right before Seether "hit" Veruca Salt played a club I did sound at part time called Bogies in Albany NY. Was one of those middle of the week shows and they were basically not well known yet. I did their sound that night as they were not touring with a crew. They were very friendly and so appreciative of my efforts. The crowd unfortunately was sparse, probably 80 people or less. But they were so awesome. You knew they were going somewhere, it was obvious they had that special thing going on. A couple weeks later they exploded on the college radio & MTV, etc. I had my bragging rights and had such a crush on Nina from that night on. And Wow! She's still gorgeous and still such a sweetheart!

      80 people on a Wed. night ain't bad at all. So many clubs use those nights to feature new bands and tell them "if you bring us 50 people we'll have you open on a friday or saturday".

    I saw them open up for Bush back in the late 90’s and they did not disappoint! They sounded so good and had amazing stage presence. Love you girls! So happy you’re back making incredible music! Chicago ruled the 90’s🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
