      They were never grunge, dipshit.
      Veruca Salt can actually tune their instruments, have lyrics that you can appreciate when you aren't on drugs and their voices are pleasant and enjoyable to listen to;
      so they do not meet the requirements of grunge.
      Oh. They also know how soap and water works.

    I saw Veruca Salt at a midnight show on my 21st birthday at Empty Bottle. I also went to Columbia College in Chicago and for one of my classes, we had to break down their equipment at Chicago Dress Rehearsal Studios. Me and my best friend in the class got to meet them and we helped the road crew at a show that weekend and I remember the band “Hazel “ opened for them. Saw them with Dig and Juliana Hatfield at Metro too. I have American Thighs on vinyl, cassette, and cd lol. I also have the Minty Fresh 45 of Seether. I remember being so blown away by them and had the biggest crushes on Nina and Louise. Steve Lack was so nice to me and my buddy. His dad owned Lack Funeral Home in Chicago. Just really cool people.

      I was at that Veruca Salt/Dig/Juliana Hatfield show at Metro too! It was 2/14/94. Somebody had given Juliana a PJ Harvey T-shirt she was thanking them for. Juliana had been quoted jokingly saying "Girls can't play guitar," so when she got on stage, she praised Veruca Salt, adding "I know I said 'girls can't play guitar,' but I take it back!"

    Just read an article about a Veruca Salt losing master tapes in the UMG fire in 2008. They weren’t the only ones, the fire affected Soundgarden, Audioslave, Nirvana and many, many others. THIS would make a great story to cover here.

    • @jfiery
      @jfiery 4 роки тому +33

    • @immortal2u
      @immortal2u 4 роки тому +7

      @@flipnap2112 Absolutely. There were irreplaceable master tapes going all the way back to the 1940s great Jazz labels. Worse yet, they didn’t even contact the artists to let them know.about the loss. So many learned years afterward, I’m sure there are still artists that haven’t heard. The care and management of these irreplaceable items sounds like it’s always been slipshod at best.

    Still love Veruca Salt, they're one of my favorites. I seen them at a club called Watermelon Sugars in Santa Barbara around like 2008, 2010 somewhere in there. My bro and I went because we were fans. Most everyone there were just the regular douchy club types of Santa Barbara, not there for the band, just there for the scene. It seemed as if everyone would watch for a minute then go back to socializing. Maybe 40 or 50 people in the whole club and yet me and my bro were front and center at the stage the whole show and it seemed to us that the band noticed this and suddenly were just playing to us. All the movements and eye contact were on us as I feel like they recognized that indeed we were there for them, not the scene. It was like they were playing just for us and it was awesome. When we left my buddy says "dude did you get the vibe that she wanted to hook up with us?" (I cleaned up his language btw) and I was like "lol, no dude, I think they just recognized the true fans there, me and you". anyways that part made me laugh, but if that was the case I wouldn't have been bummed about it either. Good show, glad I'm not a douchy Santa Barbara type.

    Veruca Salt was and is AMAZING. I never thought of them as an 'alternative' or 'grunge' act. They had such a unique sound that scratched me right where I itch, especially when they first hit the scene in the early/mid-90s. American Thighs was fantastic from beginning to end. Eight Arms to Hold You was an epic follow-up. Resolver is also good though there's one album in there I just never really listened to. Ghost Notes from 2015 is easily my favorite album of the last 15 years. It's full of that signature sound and I can't get enough. So starting completel;y new and from scratch at 50, and yes I was like you in my 20's and 30's. So I decided to no longer be a "sheeple". what every one else is doing I'm not. Everyone, yep all the way up to the king and Pope, are a bunch of liars. So now I always tell the truth, even "kill them with truth and kindness" and it agravvates people more than when you lie I learned. :) lol! kicking someone's ass has always been too easy for me, but really for them as well I a week later their fine and your still broke and out how much $$? This version even leaves out a pretty major detail about them reconciling, which is that Louise, then in her late 30s, was trying to start a family and had had trouble conceiving and then had a miscarriage. She mentioned it to Nina in one of the emails, and Nina had gone through the same thing earlier. Nina helped Louise with referrals and advice from everything she had learned, and provided emotional support. Going through that experience, they realized how much they missed each other, and it reignited their friendship. Louise eventually had a daughter.

    For sure one of my top 10bands of the 90's. They are like Black Sabbath with pixie fairies as vocalists, and their incredible vocal harmony sound is like aural honey to me. American Thighs was so good it changed my whole outlook on female-fronted bands. Saw them on the Volcano Girls tour and they were on fire. If you haven't heard the later track "Shutterbug" you HAVE to check that out if you ever liked them. Nina and Lousie are still hot, still great, and if you ever get the chance to see them, do it.

    I think I know what that private matter is that they are referring to. Back in November of 1997, I saw Veruca Salt at the Madison Theater in Peoria, illinois. A friend of mine who ran the lighting for the show that night told me that a big blowout occurred backstage between Nina and Louise, after it was discovered that one of them was screwing the other's boyfriend who happened to be a member of the opening band. Looking back, Louise seemed very disconnected from the live experience that night and chain smoked like crazy. But she did wear the Reo Speedwagon shirt that night as seen in this video.

    • @michelergo
      @michelergo 4 роки тому +2

      This actually matches the rumor of that period. Louise probably had a secret affair with Blake Smith, member of Fig Dish, the band opening for VS in Peoria, Nov. 1997. But at the end of 1997 Nina had already dumped him, he was her ex-boyfriend (she was flirting and dating with Stacey Jones, the new drummer for the tour) ... but this fact did not lessen her enraged reaction to Louise's backstabbing and dude-stealing.

    • @chadmooreofficial
      @chadmooreofficial 4 роки тому +1

      I saw The Donnas in Nov '04 in Denver and I was pinned up against the front of the stage.
      Allison's Marshall amp was aimed right at my head and was the perfect volume. I was in Heaven!!
      I did not get to meet any of the girls, but I got one of Allison's guitar plectrums.
      Torry Castellano wrecked up her wrists buy gripping the drumsticks too tightly and she got really bad tendonitis. She was getting Cortisone shots for about 2-3 years and finally, about the end of '07, she had to quit the band. She went back to the Bay Area and went to college.
      The Donnas tried to get another drummer to replace her but I don't know if they ever found anyone that truly fit well enough to stay for long.

    How about a story on Wire and their first album, “Pink Flag,” released in 1977. For a band who was part of the first wave of UK ‘77 punk like The Sex Pistols, Clash, et al., their album completely threw the punk rock “rules” out the window and created the beginnings of post-punk and was a huge influence on bands like Minutemen, Mission of Burma and early 1980’s American hardcore thrash.

It turned out the town we’re not big on the band so no one showed up, the band mostly hid in their RV put back with only the manager hanging out inside.
