Hi, This can be done on all steel frame cycle. If your cycle frame is alloy then don't try doing this.
Thanks! I plan on putting a few gears on a single speed. I’ve calculates what I want, and 5 speeds would cover all I need. It’s cool as there aren’t several chain rings, or 7,9 etc gears that need not clutter ones mind, and really are unnecessary as most do not utilize such small increments of adjustment ever really.

I’ve been riding a 5 speed 1-by commuter city bike for a few years now. Thumb shifter (microshift). Very pleased with how it turned out.
@@PRH123 I figured out which gears I will utilize, so why have these unnecessary gears that take up real estate on a beautiful piece of machinery. And let’s not forget the maintenance that is depressing enough to cause a thinking person to say there has to be better way.
Problem with that is no one makes 5 speed parts anymore unless it's expensive restoration parts
@@johnsmithers284 it’s easy to find a 5 speed freewheel on Ali Express. And that mounts on a standard freewheel hub. And then any friction derailleur and shifter will work with it.
Alternatively you can use a cassette hub, and use only the 1st 5 gears. You could even remove the top 3 cogs and replace them with spacers.

Hi, plan buying a cycle based on your need. If you are planning for long rides then a alloy frame is better as the weight is lesser than steel frame.
If you are looking for a shorter commute then you can go for a steel frame. One thing you should keep in mind is older cycle frames are heavier than recent models which has mild steel frames.
Yes you can buy a second hand and modify that. Below things you may need to check before buying.
1. Steel frame (you can check with a small magnet sticking on the frame)
2. Seat stay and chain stay should be with single rods (which makes the modification easier)
3. Cycle with V Brake or disc brakes are better as after extending the gap other brakes are difficult to set.
4. Last but importantly check for bike fit before you purchase your cycle.

How is the performance of gear? Is it work like the actual geared cycle or minor difference(which)? I have MTB tata stryder nx-20 single speed, as per below comments response you recommended 6 speed. Can you suggest the parts require like hub, axel, shifters, wire, drealiure, chain etc....? Need best combination to work.
Hi Kashyab Gandhi, Performance will be same and no difference is seen. One thing is the gear setting and alignment should be proper. If you cycle has a steel frame you can go ahead. I recommend to go for 5 or 6 speed as the gap will be less to accomodate a 7speed gear sprocket.
- Same hub can be reused.
- Axle needs to be purchased based on length after extending the gap.

It's a 7 speed freewheel installed and I haven't change the crank. Planning to change it to a 3 speed and checking on some compatibility.

Hi Jerian, Chain falls when the chain and chainring teeth doesn't match proper and other cause would be alignment between chainring and the gear freewheel. Check these and allign them properly to avoid chain slippage.

how do you choose which gear set can fit your bicycle? or are the sizes universal? do we need to know the hub diameter or some other dimensions in order to choose the appropriate gear set?
Hi, This is a after market modification and does not have any standards or documentation available. Gear freewheel are made in a size to suit universal hub and choosing number of gears is based on gap available for it to run. Mostly available are 6 speed and 7 speed. I recommend to use upto 5 gear eventhough it has 7gear to avoid chain noise and slipping.

Hi, there are 2 screws which you will be adjusting for both limits. This helps to protect the chain from coming away from gears while using the lowest or highest gear.

Hi I found this is of alloy frame. If so I don't recommend for any frame modifications.

Hi Karthik, you can only go for 6x3 for better shifting experience. As the frame is not designed for gears we can not force too much to enlarge the gaps. And if your cycle frame is made of Aluminium alloy then it is not recommended to install gears unless the frame is designed to accommodate some gear freewheel.

I love my hercules i found at the tip, and I wish to add a higher and lower gear without completely removing the 3 speed hub.
There are 2 ways i can think of doing it. The problem is, do the parts/kits exist?
One of my ideas is to replace the single speed sproket on the hub to a small 3-speed cassette, and the other is to replace the single speed drive gear with a 3-speed cassette.
Any information would be huge.
5 or 6 speed gears are available in market. If you wish you can alter by removing 2 gears out of it, but requires some mechanical effort. Give a try!

I recommend not to try any modifications on alloy frame as it may result cracks or even breaking the metal. If the bike has given space to install gears then you can go for it otherwise no.
bro my cycle frame is aluminium so its very difficult to adjust but i give too much force it come but i fear for frame may break what method should i follow to do follow to increase.(my cycle is adult bigger cycle approx axle size is 15 mm)

Hi Ashok, I do not recommend you to give much force as you said it will break. Aluminium needs to be heated and formed to the shape and that is difficult process for a cycle. Try finding 3 or 4 speed free wheel which can fit inside the gap.
Chain size: if you are asking about the chain length you have to remove or add chain links to match the desired length. If you are asking for chain width then have to buy a new chain. For single speed and gear freewheel the chain comes in different specifications. Ask for one in the nearby shop. Hope this helps!

Hi, yes you can. I found 200mm at a nearby store so I used it to have some extra threads out for the kick stand.

Hi, you can install gears and as the shopkeeper said you can only go for max 6speed. If your cycle frame is made of steel you can enlarge the gap to accommodate gear freewheel if it's made up of aluminium alloy I don't recommend you to alter anything in frame as it might bent or break the frame.

Hi, If it a steel frame you can expand else don't try. Go for minimum gear freewheel available (4or5) so that gap you need will be minimum.

There are many duplicates out. Even if you get one ensure its Shimano. Try with local stores.

Hi Johny, the easy way would be adjusting it by pushing or pulling the joints between seat stays and chain stay, this should happen slowly with minimal force and step by step. Mark a center point and measure it now and them. Wheels should be removed and ensure bike is placed firmly in a bracket/vise.
If you bike frame is Aluminum alloy then I will not recommend this as it may break.

Hi, My best wishes for your cross country trip on bicycle. Old frames are of steel and they weigh heavier than recent models. Yes they are sturdy design but challenge is you need to consider the bike weight aswell for a cross country ride.
I am not an expert to suggest you on this. As I aware a Decathlon bike expert can give you more tips on this ride and choosing a bike.

If you are planning to get more gear ratio then plan to change the front crankset also to 3 speed.

Yes you have to. Few will have wider space for upgradation and most of them not. Check measuring the gap and decide

Hi, with correct allignment of rear wheel and making enough space for gears will work fine. Initially you may have to make some trial and error to get to that position. Once set then no difference between OEM or after market.

Hi, If the manufacturer had provided gaps for adding gears then we can else we cannot increase the hub space in aluminium frame. If may break.

Hi, no need to drill holes. Derailleur will come with a mounting clamp which will be enough to fix it.

Hi Brother, you can do if your cycle frame is made of steel. Not recommended for Alloy frame as it may brake while doing adjustments.

Hi, with a proper alignment of wheel and adjusted of gears we can install in any cycle. Ensure the frame is of steel so that the gap can be increased to fit a gear freewheel.

Hi, you can remove the freewheel and install a fixed one with spacers next to it. So that don't need to adjust the gap and redo all brakes.

Hi, cold settings are permitted only on iron frames. So I don't recommend on any alloy or cast iron. Each metal has a permissible limit so it's good not to force too much. As we do this slowly and steadily there is lesser chance of breaking the part.
