    glad you made this video. and you really do stand by this because I've been waiting for the G16 video and you've delayed it multiple times letting us know that the test products have had fan issues, letting us know EXACTLY what to look out for when and if WE buy those laptops. Worth the wait and I've already seen multiple videos of G16's and G14's with zero mention of Fan noise.. in fact you might be the only review I've seen to actually point it out.. it's that kind of honesty that allows me to rely on your reviews. I'm going to be purchasing a laptop between now and June to replace my 2012 Macbook pro and the one I choose will be 100% based on your videos. Thanks again, keep up the good work!

      The new G14 and G16 are the first windows laptops that are as good looking and as well built as macbooks for me, and they are even lighter than the equivalent macbook, a little fan noise won't hurt.

    Here's a tip to help sort out which reviews to take seriously and which to disregard: when you see multiple videos from different YTers releasing a video on the same product at the same time, those are content. When a review comes out only weeks after the product has been available, that's a review.

    This is an excellent video, especially in the first half. I've had similar thoughts for some time now that most UA-camrs really are speaking from the perspective of people who've created content for most of their lives. MKBHD, LTT - etc, have very little real-world experience. The LTT videos where they're setting up server environments is maddening for myself, for example, having been in the corporate IT world for 15+ years now. lol.
    It's less that they're lying to you, on average, and more that this is the grind that they've had to embrace for their material conditions.
    As to your channel, I've actually appreciate your reviews more-so than most, because of several things you'd mentioned here. It's clear these are your guys opinions, for the most part, and that's valuable.
    I'd love to see ya'll incorporate some more varied benchmarks in your views, such as Basemark's Web Benchmark, stuff like running Graphics Benchmarks like (3DMark) in the battery tests, and not just the video playback, as those tend to nuke different parts of the computer. Some tests like Passmark as well, that do more thorough testing than stuff like Cinebench/Geekbench does.

    • @hassan_codes

      Man, from LTT recommending specific Ubiquiti devices for large scale corporate network and server environments over Cisco or MKBHD just blabbing out non-facts.

    Good stuff Josh. I started my UA-cam reviews basically in reaction to my dissatisfaction with how a lot of the UA-cam review scene was going.
    Once I started to get larger I was shocked also (as you state) how much random sponsored garbage I was offered.
    I personally have decided to stay totally sponsor free for now. Sure this means I don’t get early review units and I need to buy the majority of what I get, but for now it can maintain objectivity. (Important for me due to size).
    I think you also calling out affiliate links is important. These links should be clearly labelled as what they are. I don’t think viewers are against UA-camrs making money, but clarity is key. “Product showcase” for sponsored videos is a really good way around this. It’s a tough one because many smaller UA-camrs simply don’t have the money to stay afloat easily. It’s easy for bigger UA-camrs to maneuver as they often have a lot of money/income already. It’s a tough one
    And sadly I think you also nailed a critical issue. Many channels are simply “creators”. Many channels lack the expertise to covet the products in the manner than they do. I think anyone can give personal opinion, if framed in the right way. (Eg someone saying “I’m a student, and this is how I use this laptop”). But you absolutely nailed it that a lot of content being put out simply lacks the expertise from the creator. I don’t want to gatekeep UA-camrs, but they need to at least demonstrate their limitations.

    I've always enjoyed your videos because you talk about two things that I care about far more than performance: heat and fan noise. Those have affected my quality of laptop purchases far more than performance has as a non-gamer who doesn't do video editing. (Battery life is also super important as someone who works on commute, but thankfully, that's a standard thing for most reviewers.) I also really like that you show Excel spreadsheets as someone whose work does regularly involve Excel, and this is true for most people I know in real life even if the online space neglects it for its relative mundanity.

    Thanks for addressing this. Better help is one of the worst shady things I’ve personally seen influencers advertise. I worked briefly as a crisis support worker and we were instructed on the difference between our role and that of a therapist so that we could a) stay within our role and b) explain what a therapy can and can’t do for people. When I saw someone advertise the option to message therapists at any time I was immediately suspicious about their services. Now there’s thankfully more info available about the problems with better help and there was a big scandal about them sharing private health info but I still see influencers work with them sometimes. I do think many were misguided and had good intentions. I can see how it sounds great to someone who doesn’t know what I did, I’d love mental health care to be more available! But sadly they’ve done a lot of damage.
    Granted there may be a place for being able to message therapists, I’m not a therapist let alone an expert. But as a general rule the practice of limiting therapy to within sessions and having other services available for emergencies or when people just need to talk exists for a reason!

    Thank you for making this video and clarifying your stance, I respect that. 🙇
    I have a gripe with all youtubers (maybe also you) and I don't hold it against any of them but I feel the fundamental problem with reviews no matter how long term is that you have access to other laptops or devices when your work stops because of a laptop issue which means the struggle we face of owning one laptop isn't really faced by reviewers. And after a certain period of time, lets say 6-8months or even a year the long term review is over but we users use our laptops for years to come. The problems after the first year are not something reviewers cover or even could cover. Same goes for buying older laptops which go on sale, like laptops which are still good to buy new but were launched 2 years ago, barely anyone covers that or reviews those consistently.
    And I understand this is something you cannot cover but I just wanted to point out a pain problem as a user. And I hope you guys could consider this problem as something to solve in the future.
    Good luck and can't wait to see where you take this channel and its content! 🔥

    • @TechGuyBeau
      @TechGuyBeau 3 місяці тому +2

      One benefit of people who do this a long time is that we get a feel for the landscape. For example I often use older laptops as my daily driver since I am constantly manoeuvring.
      Eventually you start to run into issues on laptops and can sort of expect to see them pop up. It means that you can warn people to an extent. There is always the risk of the Atomistic Fallacy (apply an event that happened to you others). For example:
      “I’ve never had driver issues with nvidia, so it’s the best” - when the eye are forums dedicated to these issues
      “I had a dell laptop once that broke, so all dell laptops suck”
      The one advantage of being embedded in the culture, both doing reviews and also just communicating with thousands of people, is that us reviewers are able to sort of gauge the landscape. If a lot of people report issues with a product, it starts to build a consensus, even if I personally haven’t encountered this issue.
      For example razer battery bloat. I’ve don’t a few razer reviews and never had bloat, but that’s because I only used the laptop for 6 months; But, batter bloat is something I am aware of.
      Just food for thought on channels like Josh or mine or Jarrod, etc, who have hands on with hundreds of thousands of products over time.
      (Sidenote: this is why the viewer is so important. Engaging with our viewers and getting feedback not only on our channel but on the products we review is critical!. Engage with your UA-camrs, it helps us).

    • @v1d300
      @v1d300 3 місяці тому

      @@TechGuyBeauAll good points but there is not a single place (apart from reddit or other niche forums) where someone wanting to buy a certain laptop could know any all the problems in the product's later stage. As I mentioned, if I am getting a high-end laptop from 2021, all the reviews are from early 2021. None really talk about what problems now exist with it which the manufacturer or the user cannot fix.
      For example, Intel's Killer Performance suite since a certain patch kills the WiFi if you try to run openVPN(or whatever way NordVPN works on Windows). Its been almost a year now and on Intel forums and NordVPN's support page discuss about this but no resolution yet! It works fine on Linux.
      And this problem came up suddenly after a certain patch, and I don't see many people talking about it (until I searched for it).
      So even if you as a reviewer or as an enthusiast, you have all the feedback. There is no way for you to go back to your own review and add something to it so the future buyer will be aware of it or be prepared for it. Your knowledge is sitting there but no good outlet to reach us. Engaging only helps gaining the knowledge, and with the fast moving tech space most reviewers understandably move on. Remedying this somehow will be a game changer I think.

    I'd love to see a section on aftermarket support for each manufacturer. Whether on a video-by-video basis, or as a dedicated video every year.
    As reviewers, it's easy to forget that most people don't upgrade laptops often - many keep theirs for 5+ years or more. As a result, you're almost guaranteed to need support at some point. I loved my Razer Blade 15, but vowed never to buy from Razer again after a support experience that was so bad, I gave up trying.
    Anything from warranty period to actual customer support quality, whether personal experience or by gaging reception online. Of course, if personal experience, this would also need to be anonymous as special treatment is otherwise guaranteed.

    Great video, a bit of an unrelated comment just in case you see it. For laptops coverage, what do you think about incorporating panel responsiveness into the reviews? For example MacBooks’ panels due to their relatively slow response times result in ghosting to a trainer eye, also the 120hz smoothness gets affected. This is a huge deal for gaming, but even everyday use is noticeable to some ppl. Maybe worth looking into this whole area and seeing how all laptops stack up to each other in this regard? Just some food for thought.

    Great statement. Personally the channels I get the most from are those where the host is tech-savvy. They don't necessarily need to have a degree or carear in IT, to be honest, but the difference between tech-savvy and non tech-savvy is huge. I can't stand those "Average tech youtuber" channels whose mantra is "I know nothing about tech, so I am like you and you can therefore understand all the bs that I say". They make so many mistakes, skip so many important things that the ultimate value is extremely low, with generalities like the screen is very crisp, the speakers are very good, performance is snappy. Means nothing... No comparison, no data, no "teaching", nothing useful. Tech savvy people if they are good at explaining are much more useful even to the less knowledgeble viewer.

    TLDR: After 10 years in this industry, I'm telling you that you could and should take sponsored products for reviews and still be unbiased. Just don't compromise yourself and time needed for testing the product. Companies do not have power over you!
    FULL: When company ask you to do the review in exchange for the product, they should know what kind of content you're creating and what to expect of the video. They are willing to take a RISK that you'll show flaws in their product. It helps the industry and if your video gains enough views and you point what's wrong with product, they'll improve it. They should be grateful you've talked about that. It will help your channel grow also.
    If they don't accept those terms, you don't have to take their product. You can get it on your own and still do the review. In their eyes, they've a lot to fear about you buying their product because they're thinking if you buy it, you'll do even worse review.
    Even when you do "the bad review", still a lot of people will buy that product because flaws you've mentioned are not something they care about. If companies do now like reviews, they just do not like that you've showed how bad their product is and they could and should fix it.
    Take the money when it's offered, just don't compromise yourself for anything.
    I've been following for a few years now and you're my favorite laptop reviewer! Wish you best and keep up the good work!

May be it's just that I am too sensitive to it but I would greatly appreciate more attention to hinge rigidity in your reviews. Thanks a lot for all your hard work

I know its a deal breaker for a lot of people and it was also present on the Excellent HP Spectre 14 2 in 1. Please mention it if its present on the Lenovo Yoga 9i 2 in 1 in its own section.

I know lot of people might want concise videos but in all videos you already tell the conclusion right at the beginning and hence I would like you guys to go a bit deeper and add more information, say Linux compatibility or a mixed battery test (mostly browsing and content consumption) or even something silly like the average amazon review score.
    You could also add historical pricing for that series to see if the brand might put it on sale and issues associated with those previous models.

    Well Josh, even if you're not sent products first because manufacturers cannot depend on you to not point out flaws, I would still hold off buying until your review comes out, even if it's down the track.
    Now I think about it, one of the tech review channels notorious for everything always being "great" (at worst it will be "it's not the best I've used" in relation to one or two aspects at the very most, everything else about it is great), is a channel that seems to get things sent first. While I watch to get a basic idea, the trust just isn't there like it is with you. Then there are the what's the point reviews that are really just a list of specs & a tour of the ports. You, Jarrod & MashIT are my go to people. :) Oh, & a guy called techtablets - he's a Kiwi so I might be biased haha, but I've been quite impressed by some of his reviews too.

    One additional point worth mentioning is that frequently, we're unable to benefit from reviews of the newest and most advanced models due to their unavailability in our geographical region or being out of stock. Consequently, it could be more beneficial to seek reviews of slightly older laptops that are likely to be accessible and reasonably priced, as they haven't experienced a significant price surge associated with being newly launched.

    Between this video and the scathing review of the latest XPS Dell laptop, you got yourself a new subscriber. What was mentioned about reviewers who aren't familiar with a certain topic is especially important for someone like me. Using games as a metric to compare the product against isn't that helpful if I want to know how well it runs CAD. Sure that laptop might run Doom well, but how does it perform when running Solidworks or other professional software? Too many reviewers only focus on gaming performance - that might be important for a large number of users, but some of us actually use our machines for work.

    • @BigTylt
      @BigTylt 3 місяці тому

      @@JustJoshTech If you do end up doing Linux tests, I think testing multiple distros would be more beneficial than just one. For example, the Slim 7 Gen 8 just got a kernel patch that fixes its speakers. If you use Arch Linux or Fedora, you'll get the patch, but if you only use Ubuntu 23.10, you won't get the patch because it hasn't been added to Canonical's repos yet.

    • @Winnetou17
      @Winnetou17 3 місяці тому

      I support this. Linux FTW!
      While on the topic, yeah, even just choosing the distro might be a headache. Like BigTylt said, using a mainstream one is kind of required, but if the drivers seem to be missing, the trying another one which is more cutting edge, like Fedora or Arch or maybe Pop!OS might help. Since that's the first and most important thing to know: if all the hardware works. Which distro offers it is less important, if one offers it, the others will too, or the user will manage to make it work. But it's important to know if you can use it at all.
      IF you have the time, a battery test on Linux would also be nice. Somehow, despite Linux being more lightweight than Windows in almost all scenarios, the battery life can often times be (much) worse. Though here it can be a rabbit hole.

    Just Josh - This will be my last comment on this video. I've posted a lot already, and I don't want to overwhelm your feed. But I really enjoyed your video and couldn't resist sharing my thoughts. I found what you said in this video really interesting. You made some great points and your analysis was spot on. But it got me thinking - if all UA-cam Tech Reviewers are always honest and straightforward, wouldn't companies stop working with them? They might lose out on easy sponsorships and deals. It's like wishing for a world where everyone is perfectly honest and open, which might be unrealistic. In fact, there are even UA-camrs who have been banned from Apple or attending certain events because they kept it real. I'm not saying you're wrong, but being totally honest could actually hurt a channel's views, subscribers, and growth. I speak from experience, as I've tried to be totally transparent over the years, and it hasn't always worked out well. I'd love to hear your take on this in another video if you have the time. I know you're busy and probably get tons of comments, so no pressure. Cheers, LM.

    Only one step from being the perfect channel: measuring the brightness level of each laptop and having a standard nits number when you test battery life. Here’s my 2 cents to help with the uncompromised vision, Josh.
    Also, since time to market is usually a big factor, do you think it would make sense to find a viable way to request audience feedback on what should be next month’s review, or that could cause too much production planning disruptions and it is just not possible due to acquisition and logistics?

    • @JustJoshTech
      @JustJoshTech  3 місяці тому +1

      This is a good idea to do more polls on this. Just keep in mind... some products are under embargo, so I can't even speak about them to our audience. Also there are alot of diruptions, for example our G16 video should have been live a week ago, but we wanted to investigate the fan noise more. At this point one of the main things i'm trying to do is up our production capacity so we can at least get more videos out to you

    • @_HugoQueiroz
      @_HugoQueiroz 3 місяці тому

      @@JustJoshTech That makes total sense, what could be useful is starting with 1/4 of the content been directly influenced by the community. Afterall the idea is not to disrupt or control the production, but survey what might be most popular topic and increase overall view still keeping true to the mission. About embargos, perhaps the polls can focus on "topics" not products. Like "14, 15, 16 inch"" or "laptop trends of 2024", this way it might not interfere with logistics.
