    I will always use adblock. If all ads were like on reddit for example then fine but 99.99% of ads are annoying and/or scams/viruses/malware/spyware. For this reason I see no logical incentive to stop using it and no, I don't feel guilty at all.
    I think that if you put malicious/annoying ads on your site, you are the one that should feel guilty, not us.

      +Samuel Lakatoš Personally for me it depends on the site. Sites that I frequent that don't run annoying ads, I keep it disables, but if I'm on a site like TPB or the like I keep it enabled. On top of that I do keep it disabled on UA-cam as I don't actually find UA-cam ads that annoying, even the unskippable ones.

      Techquickie As Linus mentioned in one of the WAN shows, I don't really get why people complain about ads after the video. Before the video is much worse.

    • @Scubadog_
      @Scubadog_ 9 років тому +153

      Techquickie I don't get why. Denying the content behind a timer makes me hate their company. The well done proper promotions at the end of the video actually intrigue me.
      For example, I don't really have a use for Freshbooks right now, but I bookmarked anyway, since it seems useful. You can bet I wouldn't have even thought about doing so with an annoying pre-roll.

    • @prototypep4
      @prototypep4 9 років тому +44

      Techquickie imbedded ads at the end are certainly not an issue. The reason I run adblock is mostly because the ads aren't relevant. So many times I got car insurance ads when I wasn't running adblock that I just got fed up. I'm blind, I don't need car insurance. Or a lot of things that are advertised. I watch the adverts you put in and have considered a few courses on Lynda because of you guys.

      Same here. I understand that ads are the ones that pay for the operation and maintenance of the website/servers, but some ads really push the limits of annoyance. I click one, just one, button and maybe five pop ups show and there were times that pop ups contain more pop ups. There should be a committee that will regulate these ads. A simple picture or text could be tolerable, but not those pop ups.

      Not the point of ads. When you think of cars, what do you think of? When you think of candy bars, sodas, fast food restaurants, what do you think of?
      For every one of those, you thought of something. Because you thought of something, the ad succeeded. It is not to make you buy something immediately but to make you think of those products when you decide you want something.
      I am thirsty. What do you want? Maybe a coke.
      I want to grab a quick bite. I heard checkers is having a deal.
      I need a new car. Those Mercedes sadans look great!
      You know what you are not thinking of? Polaris cars, Jones soft drink, VU+. Products that may or may not be good but you will never know because they rarely advertise.

      I think I have to agree with "PeskyCanadian", due to the way I remember things by linking memory:
      See a drink ad? Cola -> relaxed -> want action -> drinks soda in GTA -> play GTA
      car ad? Car -> Driving -> action -> Travel -> RPG or racing game
      cat food ad? Cat -> Khajiit -> Skyrim
      loan money ad? Economy -> spreadsheet -> EVE Online or the X space games (X Rebirth/X3 Reunion)
      game ad? Any game will do
      Because of entertainment level: Learning < Gaming.
      Only thing that outweight Gaming is Learning & Entertainment, only time I break over to gaming then are annoying ads that distract me from having a fun learning experience online.
      In short, any ad I see usually stops me from watching LinusTechTips and start gaming instead, and with that miss that next video I could have given a like.
      Whitch I guess is both good and bad depending on point of view, and me? I have fun nonetheless.

    As soon as you can garantee that these braindead adservers stop spewing malware, I'll consider removing adblocking. This is not about paying content creators. This is like publishing you bank data with content creators promising no one will abuse that.
    It's on you, the content creators, the websites operators and the adservers to weed out malware. As long as you don't, ads get blocked. It's as simple as that.

      Skripty Resources I know a lot about computers, even built my own gaming PC a month ago, so i am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with it.
      I don't know if it has anything to do with what country you live in, but at least here in Finland the ads are almost everytime 30s to 1 minute, with usually no skip button and if there is, you'll have to wait for 10 to 15 seconds before you can skip, and when there are 5-10 ads in half hour video, it drives me absolutely crazy. I see enough ads while i watch TV, i want to be ad free at least in youtube.

    Sponsorships. If companies want to advertise, they use sponsorships. Because I am sick and tired of:
    >Loud unskipable prerolls, especially when irrelevant to the video I am trying to watch
    >Multiple ad popups
    >Struggling to run HD video but the ad loaded perfectly in HD quickly
    >Noisy or flashy ads, especially when you can't mute or stop the video
    >Ads which intrude on the space of the website
    >Ads which take so long to load the page times out
    >Pop ups (unfortunately they haven't got rid of the "Join our mail list" or "Like us on Facebook" shit yet)
    >Malicious ads that actually put software you don't wnat on your computer
    >Trying to download and seeing 10 different download links, and the real link being the least obvious
    >Ads, typically the type mentioned above, that fool less conscious people into clicking on them and installing the software
    >etc etc
    When ad makers improve their game, I may consider not using adblock. I don't give a shit aobut website maintenance and server costs, get your shitty, obnoxious, deceptive, malicious ads out of our face. We use the internet for the content, with ads on the side. Our experience shouldn't be hindered with *BUY THIS!!!!! CLICK THIS LINK!!!!!* That should not be what we use the internet for or the main experience. Advertisers need to make us want their product, not simply have the loudest, most annoying ad. And the fact that ads allow malicious people with malicious intent? No, I use adblock, no regrets.

    I use "adblock" on UA-cam., and it's NOT because I don't want ads. I'm 61 years old, I'm used to ads on free content (TV, Radio). So i have NO PROBLEM with ads, my problem is the RANDOMNESS of the placement. Usually, UA-cam will toss an ad IN THE MIDDLE of the sentence of what the "UA-camr" is saying, BREAKING THE "FLOW". Ads on "ordinary" TV or Radio have HUMANS who break content at NATURAL breaks. This is why I don't mind ads that are IN THE CONTENT...

    These advertisers are getting more and more crafty.. I have Adblock, Adblock Plus, and Ghostery, but when you search for something like "flowers" in the Google Search, there's text based ads that display at the very top. Pretty sure Adblock isn't recognizing them as ads because they're not using Flash.
    I ended up clicking on one of these ad links when I was switching windows, and it lead me to a fake website.. Same thing happened again while looking for a program plugin. *This*, is clearly why nobody wants to have anything to do with ads anymore. They can't be trusted because there's no way of managing the unsafe ones, and they're honestly just a flat out nuisance. I realize they bring in revenue for popular sites like UA-cam, but no offense, that's tough shit for them because of that problem..

    I have never used any form of Adblock until the last week. One mega-popup too many and forced clicks to read eighteen pages of information that could have been delivered in a single paragraph, one too many video ads that kept popping directly into the middle of what I was reading, forcing me to scroll up and down...._enough is enough_, I am not interested in that crap!
    I'm not talking about the ads that might appear along the side, or on top, so long as they don't keep visually intruding absolutely everywhere I need to look. It made my blood boil and I _put up with it for years_. I had malware issues a couple of times (thankfully, I'm well protected). There are a couple of places I'm willing to pay a little bit to never see their ads, but these places had better darned sure be special ones.
    Point blank: If you design your ads on your site to be intrusive and rude in an all-out money-grab fest, well, either people will stop coming, or they will employ adblock. I never minded so much the ads at the bottom of youtube videos (can just shut them) or other non-invasive options that still basically were decent-minded. I've only had adblock for a short while and am now learning what sites I am willing to whitelist.

    Btw, question if anyone else knows:
    Do the content creators of UA-cam get money for displaying their ads, clicks, or both?

    • @EatenSniperGuy
      @EatenSniperGuy 9 років тому +3

      GGamer720 Displaying. When you monetize, Google looks at view count of a monetized video.

      EatenSniperGuy Mm, ok, thank you.

    • @Likeomgitznich
      @Likeomgitznich 9 років тому

      GGamer720 EatenSniperGuy is actually incorrect. Its a confusing model
      Skippable ads and Banner ads, you get paid a small amount if it is clicked (dont be a troll and click the ads because you like the youtuber, google tracks that and can penalize them)
      Alternatively Skippable Ads and Banner ads, you get paid a small amount for every 1,000 someone sees them, but don't click them (Also known as CPM)
      However if you view 30 seconds or more of a skippable ad, you get paid a small about.
      Unskippable ads are paid per play, which is why it is more lucrative, however they tend to make people click away from the video.
      If you have anyone questions let me know.

    • @Hendlton
      @Hendlton 9 років тому

      GGamer720 They get some money for displaying, longer the ad is displayed, more money they get meaning that if you skip after 5 seconds, they get only a portion of the money, that's why there are unskipable ads. They also get more if you click.

    I have an adblocker active by default, but deactivate it on certain pages. UA-cam for example uses ads that are pretty tame, so I'm perfectly fine with it. Some pages however use ads that open pop-ups when you first click somewhere or play an obnoxious audio clip that is hidden somewhere on the page so you can't close it easily. There are ads that have a fake X in the corner, so when you try to close them you are instead opening a pop-up. I typically add exceptions for sites that ask me to do so; some by actually refusing to work otherwise (and then I may choose to reenable it again if they are obnoxious so I never have to deal with that site again), some by actually asking for it in the content (e.g. UA-cam where I had originally not even realised that the blocker was doing anything).
    So yeah, detecting adblockers and putting a note somewhere noticeable that they should please be turned off for sake of ad revenue is a pretty good way to get me to do just that. After all, those who actually nicely ask you to do that typically also don't use the really annoying stuff.

    I use an Adblock called Stands fair adblocker. It allows you to whitelist specific sites for ads like youtube and gives you stats like load time saved and ads blocked. Pretty nice and easy way to block annoying ads but still support creators you like.

    • @Diggnuts
      @Diggnuts 6 років тому

      Allowing ads does not support creators. It only supports the ad marketeers. If you want to support a creator, do it directly. Not via the ad revenue scam that leeches off of content and actively pushes for flaccid mediocrity.

  • @PostColorGear

    I feel, maybe unfairly, that a large group of people that block ads are of a younger generation. When you live at home, and mom and dad pay the bills, and for your food, ads are more annoying because you just want to watch the content. Content creators and adults realize that bills have to be paid, and as much as we are passionate about what we do, creating content for totally free at the cost of me losing sleep or personal time to do other thing (chores, go on a day trip, etc.) isnt worth it without being compensated. Point is....a 30 second ad is WAY better than paying for UA-cam.

    Lol, still gunna use adblock. I pay a monthly fee for my internet, I don't need it cluttered with ads. But on a serious note. I actually wouldn't mind youtube ads, if they were reasonable, like maybe 1 or 2 ads per page, but if my ad blocker can be trusted, each youtube page I go to has anywhere from 30-150 ads on it. Yeah no thanks.

    I have saved 184 hours with my adblocker. It's so amazing to not have my video interrupted every minute about some stupid product I am never going to care about. Honestly the main reason I use youtube is because unlike tv or anything else that I could watch videos on I can just have an adblocker running to not have to see the ads. When I go and watch youtube on my tv the advertisements are even more annoying. I have no excuse for using an adblocker other than I just don't care.

    UA-cam should work with the creators of adblock to allow us to unblock certain channel videos. Since everyvideo now has a non-channel related link thats quite hard to do but if they implemented maybe a feature that indetifyed the channel with longer codes and the vides with just video #n maybe we could unblock certain content creators that we would like to support. I usually turn of adblock for channels that I like to support like this one and some other gamibng/techrelated channels but sometimes I forget it or I am to lazy to turn it off and knowing that I might forget it and get the "problems" decribed in the video.

    • @GoGoGojira32
      @GoGoGojira32 9 років тому

      NvMme you can do that. I'm on waterfox (64-bit firefox), and i use a script (youtube white list channels in adblock plus) via greasemonkey, which lets me pull links of the channel i wish to whitelist. Add that to your filter list in your adblock, and there you go, all videos in your channel of choice is whitelisted. Only have to do it once per channel. Not sure what browser you're using, but something similar definitely exists.
