Using the small data set 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, we use the TI 83/84 to find the range, sample variance, sample standard deviation, and population standard deviation.
Thank you. First year in stats and this calculator is like a foreign language.
24 in seconds, already a better teacher than my current one.
You help a lot. Thank you for taking the time to do this. - much appreciation, a college student
This video was of more help to my understanding of Variance and Standard Deviation than my online instructor's videos. :/
saved my lazy arse one day before exam, love ya!

Best guide so far, i gave up trying to do this because i couldn't get my list to show up after entering data. Took me awhile to realize i've been typing "f1" not "L1".
This guide helped me quite a bit.
If only my professor was this clear...thank you!
:-) Have a good semester!
Thank you so much for this video struggling to remember all the steps on using this calculator you’re doing gods work 🤞🏽
YOU ARE AWESOME THANK YOU!!
the fact that i was able to do this without sound was just proof that youre amazing!!!!! ♥
Range?
biggest number minus smallest number
@@mimiwizthetahini he finally got his answer 7 years later 😂
Thank you so much. You made my world so simple. You are better then my own teacher.
The standard deviation is a number that describes how spread out the data values of a distribution are from the center of the distribution (the mean). If a student has test scores 75, 77, 79, and 76, the stnd dev will be smaller than another student with test scores 60, 70, 80, 90. Large stnd dev = more variability; small stnd dev = more consistency. The first student performs more consistently than the second student. The second student has greater variation than the first student.
Holy shit, thank you so much! I was stumped, didn’t know how to do it.
thank you for explaining that the calculator displays both the pop. and sample standard deviation. lol saved me a ton of time.
People do this calculations on Excel and it seems so complicated. Thank you for the Great video!
Thank you! This helped me understand how to input my lists onto my calculator. Stat test tomorrow!
Thanks so much I don't know why I was having a hard time with the sample variance, but this video explained it. :)
Thank you. This has been made simpler.
This was actually very helpful. Thank you.
The range is one of the three measures of variability in the study of statistics. I provided it in this example for completeness. However, it is also the easiest method of variability to compute in your head, so you really don't need a calculator.
You may be using a calculator that has a more recent operating system. In that case, make sure the list your data is in is specified next to "List." Leave "FreqList" empty. Then highlight "Calculate" and press enter.
TI 84 calculators are now being sold with OS 2.55, so the 1VarStats function looks a little different. However, it will still provide the same information.
Order doesn't matter when using 1-Var-Stats to get the standard deviation (and variance). For finding the range, having the list sorted makes it simple to find the smallest data value (at the beginning of a sorted list), and the largest data value (at the end of a sorted list). To sort a list in ascending order: STAT->2:SortA(L1), or whatever list your data is in.
Thank You Professor! You just saved my Life!!!!!
Thank you so much! This is so much clearer than how my teacher taught it.
to get the most accurate variance for either go to vars, statistics then which ever one you want then just square it to get the most accurate info
I was wondering why she didn't show that instead of typing all those numbers in.
I am following the steps you have advised and I cannot get my TI-84 to calculate. It ask for Freq List and results in INVALID DIM & sorting the list is resulting with same error? Help!
Wow couldn’t have understood this better 🤗🙏🤦🏽♀️
You are awesome! You made my life easy!
how can i find this softwere to dowland or buy this calculator or some model of casio ?
The software is TI Smartview and can be purchased at the Texas Instruments web site: education.ti.com/en/us/products/computer_software/ti-smartview-software
The calculator is the TI 84, and can be purchased anywhere, for example Amazon. The version shown in the video is the TI 84 Plus Silver Edition
I don't know much about Casio calculators. I suppose you can search for Casio calculators for statistics and see what you find.
than you
TI calculator notation :
Sx means unbiased estimate of population standard deviation.
6x means sample standard deviaton.
What program is it that you're using that has the TI-84 interface? Is it something that comes with the TI-84? (I unfortunately have been using a Casio fx-9750GA PLUS).
Good shit fam! This video is rocking!
It is called "TI-Smartview" for the TI 84 Plus.
I have the same calculator. When it hit STAT, then edit, I get a YU and a Q2 instead of L1, L2, L3.... How do I change it to get the L1 to come up?
I'm supposed to be learning algebra 1, not statistics... This video still helped a lot though, thank you.
Thank you! This is a life saver!
Thank you! I got a 100 on the test thanks for the help
The software is and emulator program called "TI Smartview." It's doesn't come with the TI 84; it must be purchased separately from Texas Instruments.
So, the distribution is kinda like an average(mean)? What would be the purpose of finding the stnd dev of the two students? Basically, why would stnd dev be needed? Sorry for all the questions XD
My calculator is giving me incorrect numbers when I do exactly what you do. Why is it not giving me the same numbers as you? Is there something that I need to change in the setting of my calculator?
What about if you have numbers in more than one list? How do you find the range like that?
straight to the point! thank you!
I just want the standard deviation. not the population , sample etc . just the standard deviation ..which one do I use?
You'll need to know if the data you are working with represents a sample or a population. There are always two standard deviations.
if the question asks for s, it's sample. this would usually be the case so probably that. for the sigma, it will literally ask you to find its population
I don't understand how you entered just one set of numbers, but got a population variance and a sample variance, and they were different numbers. Where did the sample numbers come from? Or where did the population numbers come from?
This was such a big help thank you so much !!!!
This was very Helpful! Thank you!
Does it matter if you input the numbers into L1 from least to high or in a random order?
How'd you find the range?
how can I do it if I have more than one list?
Thanks! This really helped!
is there a way to calculate a confidence interval for the population variance and standard deviation?
I have a video showing how to find a confidence interval on the TI 84. 05 Using the TI 84 Calculator to Find Confidence Intervals
Thank you so much! You are a lifesaver. This was extremely helpful.
What is the 708 figure representing?
Thank you!!! you saved my life :)
Thank you for sharing this!
Wow!! HUGEEEE help! Thanks a mil!
Is your HW asking for a population standard deviation, or a sample standard deviation? Maybe you are using the wrong value from the calculator output.
Hi my List is not blank like yours is. I type in your values but then I also have 0's beneath these values. then I keep getting slightly different results on my 1 variable statistics like variance-7.031180555 or sx=7.516648189
Thankyou for the variance
i only entered 10 numbers for me and my n value is different and all my tables are blank except for the L1 which i filled with 10 numbers. why is that??? It throws all my values off.
thank you so much! this was a high help to me!
how do you find the range?
HEY Every one !!
i just met a little problem and would love your help.
i cannot write anything on my screen while the details of ''1-VARS STATS'' is opened.
like when she types the value of sample standard deviation. I am directed to a new blank screen as i enter any number.
Can anybody PLEASE help me out?
i'd really appreciate it

Thanks for the help. I have my final tomorrow our professor is nice enough to let us do the problems without writing out the chart. Just wanted to make sure I still remembered which was what XD
Thank you! This was so helpful!
what is the software called that u are using for ti-84?
Thank you 🙌
I needed this vm
Great info! Thanks!
Nice video. Thank you
"Wabbitemu" is a free TI-84 emulator. Just download the OS from the TI website and then use it during the Wabbitemu setup.
you are awesome this was sooo helpful! thank you !
Amazing! So helpful!
somebody please help, how can I find SD when im dealing with class widths and frequencies
I thought i knew what clutch was....then i found this video
Thank you this was helpful
You're a life saver! :D
Great help!
Freakin' awesome! I have been doing most of this on paper =(. Btw, can you explain the purpose of standard deviation and variance?? I know what the definition says and how to do it, but I still don't understand 0.o" so laymen's terms pleaaaaaaaaaaaase!! XD
God bless you’re soul !!!!!!
I hope I’m not the only one trying to cram before a test/quiz
Thank you! Love it!
I followed the steps on here and I got the correct answers, for the most part...I keep doing it on my hw. and I keep getting the wrong answers...I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong! It's so frustrating
so its just the standard deviation square.
When I do this i get different values, any idea why?
mean: 14.16
standard deviation: 6.475677571
n: 50
If n is 50, then you're likely finding the statistics for the wrong list. Make sure L1 contains the same 5 values I use here.
kingoldmaster I have the same problem and same wrong values! What the heck.
On my TI-84 plus when using 1-Var Stats, you have to give in a list to calculate everything from (L1) and a frequency list (L2). The n-th number from the second list shows how many times the n-th number in the first list occurs in the sample.
So if you give in two times the list that is shown in the video, you actually calculate for a list with 1 1, 3 3's, 5 5's... and your n then equals 50. And that's when you get these wrong answers with mean 14.16 etc.
To calculate the values as shown in the video, you'll have to make a second list (L2) that is as long as the first list and contains only 1's. This will be your frequency list. If you then use these two lists in 1-Var Stats, it will give you the same results as shown in the video.
I know that I answer some old reactions now, but since this is the top comment and no answer was given yet, I thought some other people might have the same problem and would like to have a solution.
This helped so much! I was starting to get very frustrated because I wasn't getting the right answer. Thank you!
I knew there had to be an easier way to find sample variance
well done. Thank you
Your cute voice distracted me from my studies.
not a good video to watch when you're in a hurry and want to get straight to the point, BUT helpful (:
Close :) Long Island. My s.o. is from Idaho/Texas/Georgia. He teases me about the way I tawk too.
range?
***** in statistics the range is not the same as the mean. The range is simply (Max value) - (min value)
I explain the range at 0:53. myfreetime123 is correct. Simply take the largest data value and subtract the smallest data value.
ProfTaormina Yeah, you do explain what it is, but you don't explain how to calculate it on a TI-83/84. You just point out that your numbers are already in order. You should have put them in out of order so that you could demonstrate how to order them and then calculate the range. That would've been much more helpful. I'm not here to learn statistics (that's what I pay a school for), I'm here to learn how to calculate statistics in my TI-83.
Jason Romine Find the range by subtracting the smallest value from the largest value. To subtract two numbers on the TI 84, or any calculator for that matter, enter the larger number, then the minus key, then the smaller number, then press enter.
+ProfThacker DAMN I SMELL THE SASS
Awesome. Thanks
Thanks so much
2017... still getting people out of failure lol
Great! thank you so much!!!
