I think every nurse and doctor should team up like this every once in a while. A lot of the time people get so caught up in their own point of view that they forget that other people might have different responsibilities than them. Pairing up like this is such a great way to build understanding and perspective. Really hope more doctors and nurses do this, seems like it would really benefit the work environment (and hopefully patient care)

Totally agree, and with other staff think too! Often the value of allied health such as OT for example get forgotten.

This is such a good idea, letting healthcare professionals follow each other to get a sense of each other’s day/workload/what they do in general! That way we can be more considerate with each other e.g. when drs get annoyed if they get interrupted on a note when the pharmacist calls for an intervention, I can be like oh yeah it’s normal to be annoyed. So much of healthcare can be improved by learning about each other, so I’m so grateful that you let others see behind the curtain and what a day as a dr looks like ❤️ wishing you the best, just a pharmacist in training x

Some doctors are rude or don't want to deal with us coders, and some are super nice and helpful. People are much more motivated to do their job well when everyone treats each other better.

This was such a great video! It was really cool hearing about how you two worked together to help that patient with shortness of breath. Such a good idea to have nurses/doctors do this so you can both have more understanding of what the others do in a day. I was a nurse for a few years, but everyone was always soooo crabby with each other because they weren't working fast enough or exactly in "the right way" that I ended up leaving the profession for something far less stressful.

I’m my sphere of friends/colleagues we tend to talk about the trials and tribulations of junior doctor life in a jaded cynical way (of course still wonderful and pleasant to our patients!)... it’s genuinely refreshing to watch you portray the difficulties, while being pleasant and happy. Makes me rethink how I’m passing on the cynicism to my fresh faced students, by seeing you react to the difficulties in a different way.

It's so exciting how medicine has evolved in the past 30 years I have been a nurse. Starting in med/surg and working in urgent care and emergency medicine, it changes so fast, so many new medications and technology. You have a great personality which seems to be well suited to your chosen field. I look forward to more videos.

I’ve heard and experienced doctors’ attitude over years of work. This is due to work overload and numerous consults making some doctors testy and impatient. Never forget to have good bedside manners of compassion and empathy.

This was so interesting, thanka a ton! I kinda wish doctors and nurses could also shadow patients with chronic illnesses, to get an idea how daily life is like. I feel like both sides could profit, especially if there were an illness-suit, to put on like that suit you can put on where you experience how it feels to be an old person. I guess it's the walking a mile in someone else's shoes thing that really helps so much widen one's perspective.

When Ashley said don't loose the bed side manor ... Most pt do not appreciate Doc's it seems endless time when they dont attend you because they are so busy!!!! maybe it puts their bed side manor off??? The medical professions are Angels on earth we couldn't be without them.... Total respect

I'm a nurse and I loved this video! I love how open-minded are kind both of them are. So refreshing to see. It was great when the doctor enjoyed working as a team with the nurse who had shortness of breath! I wish all nurses got to shadow doctors and all doctors got to shadow nurses. I know as a nightshift med/surg nurse I would love to shadow one of the nightshift hospitalists for a day. We only have 2 hospitalists for the whole hospital at night and it'd be so interesting to see what they're doing all night long!

I think a lot of new doctors have a decent bedside manner because they have a bit more time. (I'm thinking family doctors). My own was amazing at the beginning but as the years have gone on, and her practice has grown, she spends less time with you, less time hearing you, and you just don't feel 100% on board with them. This has happened with other doctors I've seen over the years as well. OR... if they can't figure out what is wrong or if you suffer a mental health issue, the doctors seem to change their attitudes towards you as a patient. I have anxiety and now every time something comes up and I see a doctor, they chalk it up to "mental health issue" and don't give a time of day. It's horrible and I hope you never become o e of those kinds of doctors. Just because someone has mental illness doesn't mean they cannot get physically ill as well. Great video 💖 ***i also believe that the lack of family physicians here in Ontario plays a huge part in the bedside manner. More patients, less time, more work, less time..... pattern.....**** I'd love to hear your thoughts on this in a future video @violinmd

I think complacency plays a role in this. The job becomes no longer an exciting novelty and they become used to the daily grind and it seems mundane to them. They forget that from the patient's experience, it's not part of their mundane daily grind, they need full and undivided attention and thoughtfulness but the doctor has a million other "tasks" on their mind and the patient becomes a task instead of properly shifting their attention to the whole individual they're seeing at that moment. They forget some social and emotional skills and jump straight to what they think the point is. Ice caught myself developing some complacency like that on health related social media posts so that's what I think is happening. Now that I've identified it, hopefully I'll be able to prevent falling into that habit if/when I become a health professional. With a professional qualification, I hope to be able to educate other health workers on how to identify and prevent it in themselves.

I agree with this and I am in Ontario as well. I am thankful that I switched to a family doctor who told me right off that my history of anxiety has no bearing on how she will treat my physical ailments. It was a huge relief!
I had an internist ask my history and tell me my neurological symptoms were due to mental health, and I needed a psychiatrist. He also didn't take any notes during our 2 min appt. Finally, a wonderful movement specialist out of Hamilton diagnosed my hemifacial spasm and affected cranial nerves. It is hard for doctors here so I understand but it is important in any profession that we do not become complacent.
I also feel.there is a big discrepency between the quality of care you can receive in say Toronto or Hamilton opposed to smaller cities outside the GTA (like Kitchener where I live). Kitchener is great if you need your life saved, heart issues or bleeding out. If you need more sophisticated diagnostics and docs who know more about uncommon medical issues then you need to go to the GTA.

If it isn't a thing already, it really ought to be, for both professions (doctors and nurses), that they do a day (or even a week) shadowing on the other side to get a real in-depth glimpse into what the day-to-day life of the doctor/nurse is like. Is this encouraged in hospitals or in med schools and nursing schools? Seriously, I can see no downside in the long term. Yes, both have a lot to learn to simply become a nurse or doctor, so this would add another bit of education, but the benefits to everyone (doctors, nurses and patients) would be enormous!

Yes I experience just about the same couple of things at hospital I work at as housekeeping:
    - non stop line of requests from nurses, techs (for cleaning or portering (also them if they aren't there at the time))
    - not stopping for water. I do that same thing, too caught up in the work to take a breather.

Amazing video! It is so neat to see all the different people that come together for a patient. It would be awesome if you could do a video explaining the roles of each person in your team, like the differences between a senior medical resident and a first-year resident, or between them and an attending physician. Again, this was so fun to watch! 😊
