Finally! I've been trying to figure out how to increase my temp and had no success until I watched this video. Thank you!! BTW, having your temp set at 140 allows you more flexibility with setting your temps. Hotter for doing dishes, not as hot for your shower. I want to be able to determine what temp to set my water.

I watched a different video from someone else earlier today, and they said to start out by pushing the "A" button under the cover, and then push a couple other buttons sequentially in order to adjust the temperature. I couldn't find an "A" button, and I assume I was watching a video for a different model Rinnai on demand hot water heater (even though it looked exactly like mine from the outside). Anyway, once I watched your video and I depressed the small number 6 switch, it worked exactly as your video showed. After all of that, I adjusted the temp from 120 to 130 and thought it was a little too hot. I decided to put it on 125 and call it a day. Thanks for the great information and for all your help.

You need 140 F water temp. when washing bedding if you want to kill the dust mites. If you're allergic to their "dust" or you want to prevent repeated exposure which leads to future allergic reactions to their dust, this is important. The mites eat particles of skin that you naturally shed & their excretions are the "dust".
Great info. Mine is a long run to the kitchen like others have mentioned, but I also notice that the flame is somewhat inconsistent, as in it appears to pulse up and down in intensity. The flame looks proper, it just tends to pulse a little and it does seem to cause the water temp to be inconsistent. New house, unit about 8 years old. Same unit as in this video. Any thoughts?
I honestly don't know. If I was finding a heating inconsistency then I would probably definitely give the person that installed it a call to come out and take a look at it. Only things I could think of is maybe the burners need cleaned or where the gas is introduced. Totally just thoughts off the tops of my head. Sorry I couldn't be more definitive.
@@HowToHomeDIY Thanks for the input either way. At the time of my question I had just bought the home, and still hadn't moved in or used the shower yet. My observation was just from watching it run while turning on multiple faucets on at the same time just to test it out. I gave it a thorough flush and it seems to be working great. I now believe the flame is like throttling by design in order to maintain temperature. The temp is definitely steady as far as I can tell. Thanks again, and truly appreciate great folks like yourself
THANK YOU! Your instructions worked perfectly, although I did note that the #1 switch was already pressed down on our unit, at first glance. Nonetheless, I left it as is, pressed down the #6 switch, like you said, and was able to subsequently increase temperature to 140. So, as it stands now, our unit has both switches #1 and #6 pressed down, and hopefully that doesn't create any problems. Brought this up, as I noticed in your unit that none of the switches were previously pressed down, before you pressed down #6. Any thoughts? Cheers, LL.
Hey yeah I would leave dip switch 1 alone. Depending on your model it can do different things. Oftentimes dip switch one being down means you have natural gas, it would be off for propane like I have. Either way switching #6 down should not affect any of the other settings as it only controls the max temp. I hope this helps! Thank you very much for the feedback!
A previous post mentioned that Switch 1 was on for natural gas option. not sure if this is true, but sounds like it has nothing to do with temperature.

THANKS! Had both mine adjusted in 15 minutes. Have a question, the house is in FL about 4 years old, mildly hard water, no water softener (YET) and thinking it could probably use a flush prior to water softener, Any suggestions? Also, does anyone know if the exterior unit can be painted?
Oh yes you should definitely do a flush on it with 4 years of hard water going through it. Those deposits build up pretty quickly. I don’t know that they can be painted though. I have seen a lot of them and they have never received paint. But perhaps someone will know for sure. Thanks for the feedback!
Yes, I used Rustoleum Hammered Anodized Bronze on the Tankless and pipe cover to match outside trim. Looks great and with no rust in humid Piedmont NC weather.
I just put in a new electric water heater. should it be set to 140? I have been trying to figure out what is safe to set it and it still be hot when i wash dishes and shower. My husband says it should be 120/125 but feels luke warm. 😅

I have a v65 model. Propane. The #1 & #6 are in the 'on' position. I can't change the temp. I saw videos that push the 'A' button but that does not work either. Seems like the button is malfunctioning. My Rannai heats my floor and it's 1 deg outside so I need to figure this out! At 120 I can barely keep the house temp at 59 deg. Help!
Hey Wayne, If you want to keep it capable of going up to 140 degrees you would keep it flipped down. If you flip it back it will go back to a max temperature of 120 degrees.
@@waynesenvsvc1450 That is odd. If you have a model similar to the one in the video and confirm you are flipping the #6 toggle switch down and it is causing the water to be cold, then you may need to contact whoever installed it or Rinnai as that should not be happening.
Hey! A code 12 typically means that not enough gas if any is getting to the burner. Could be a blockage, loose fittings, or possibly something wrong with the burner itself. If it was me, I would look it over and see if I could tell what was wrong, looking for any loose fittings, checking to make sure there isn’t anything wrong with the gas supply, checking the exhaust to make sure nothing is wrong there, and looking for any loose wires to anything on and in the unit. If you haven’t done one, I would do a flush of the system using white vinegar as scale buildup can definitely be your issue as well. The instructions to do this are in your owners manual and there are plenty of resources on the internet as to how to do it as well. If none of this solves your issue, in this case, would probably give the person that installed it a call or someone in the area that works on them. If you smell gas at any point, call your gas supplier as there is probably a leak. I hope this helps!

I had run out of propane, got more propane, and now I cannot get the display to stay on. It was working perfectly, until I ran "out" of propane. The heater is working, but no lit display.
I had a problem with my Rinnai water heater set at 135; the hot water would keep going cold after a minute or two of hot water at the tap. A friend told me it was due to the temp being set too high so I backed it down to 125 and never had the problem again. I hope that helps someone else.
Do you know or anyone else know how to balance water pressure. The water pressure temp upstairs is hot and strong but downstairs in the main bathroom the temperature and water pressure is low
For those of you that tried this it only works when the factory set #1 switch is turned off. I did the #6 switch like many others have and got hot water then it quit. So make sure you turn off #1 switch if it is on, and then turn #6 on.
If you have the optional external control panel then it is as easy as pushing the down button to turn the temperature down. However, if you do not have this then I believe that model has its control panel inside of the unit itself. If this is the case I would find a manual for your water heater as the temperature is adjusted using different combinations of dipswitches depending on the temperature you are wanting. I hope this helps!
There is a pre filter on the pipe bringing the water into the water heater. It unscrews and then pulls out. Check that filter, I would bet that it’s clogged. Before you unscrew it though, turn the water shutoff to the off position or you will get very wet. Hope this fixes your issue!
I can tell yo the why of increasing the temp at my house. The way they piped the house when the built it the pipes take a long journey possibly out into the yard, before they get to the kitchen sink and by that time the best you can get is maybe 80F water. The shower and bathtubs aren't quite so bad but in winter they shower might be 85 max.

Rinnai has many models, the one in the video is one of the more popular residential models. Also, some older models, the dipswitches work together in a way to add or reduce the temperature, the dip switches being out of sequence could cause a big temperature change. If in fact you have the same model or one like the one in the video, then I would contact a plumber or Rinnai directly as flipping the #6 dip switch in the unit as shown in the video is in their instructions on their website to increase maximum temperature. If that is not working then there may be an issue with the unit itself. One other thing, as silly as it sounds, I would just double check to make sure it was the #6 switch that you flipped. I have bigger fingers and those switches are very close together, it would be easy to flip the wrong one but look like it was the correct one. Flipping that switch should not make your water colder it should only adjust the max temperature setting allowed on the control board. Hopefully one of these helps you out!

Hey Ayesha, yes once you override it so that you can go up to 140, you can set it at any temperature you want up to that 140 degrees and you can change it at any time. So 130 would be fine. You do not need to keep going out and flipping the number 6 switch. The switch just allows the max temp to go up to the max of 140 instead of 120. Hope this answers all of your questions!

Worked great, however while in the shower, the water got very cold but after about a minute temp increased again. Is this normal?

The reason I wanted the temp raised is because my tankless waisted to much water waiting for the hot water to reach my kitchen

This application was with natural gas. Turned off #1 and everything worked fine.

If that is not working then there may be an issue with the unit itself. One other thing, as silly as it sounds, I would just double check to make sure it was the #6 switch that you flipped. I have bigger fingers and those switches are very close together, it would be easy to flip the wrong one but look like it was the correct one. Flipping that switch should not make your water colder it should only adjust the max temperature setting allowed on the control board. Hopefully one of these helps you out!
