Owen, thank you so much for sharing part of your life with us.
Your videos are part of some ot the best moments in my week. I love superhero comic book and you have helped me a lot in sparking my interest in this amazing world.
Thank you so much.
P.D: Sorry for writing errors, english is not my native language
@@jsov2001 thank you so much! Honestly that is so kind of you to say and I greatly appreciate it.
This is my favorite comic run of all time have almost every issue love the video!!!
The bit where Spidey had a prepared list of fat jokes for Kingpin is one of my favorite uses of Spidey quips of all time
Besides the well-written arcs and great development for the character, something I love about Ultimate Spider Man was the pacing of the stories and how Bendis took the time to establish the characters instead rushing to the super hero stuff. Take the first arc for exemple: While in the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko took just one issue to tell Spider Man origin, Bendis took 6 issues, however they all work not just to focus on Peter origin but also on his personality and his relationships and dynamic with other character, specially Uncle Ben, who got much interactions, making his death much more impacful and meaningful.
Decompression helped wreck the comic medium
Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the first series I remember reading when I first got into the medium of comics. And to this day it remains one of my favorite series of all time.
Thx for making me feel old :)
Same
Me too!
Too bad that in order to buy all his comics, you gotta spend around $1,000
Wow, I’d have to say the same. Ultimate Spider-Man was the first comic series I read from beginning to end. And like you, is still one of my favorite series.
I love this! Ultimate Spider-Man is a terrific book, and it's so fun to hear about Owen's personal relationship with the series and how much it means to him.
Thank you so much!
Owen, I think you just convinced me that comic books are good, actually
I hope you know that I'm framing this and putting it above my desk.
@@OwenLikesComics I mean, why wouldn’t you?
The way Peter tells MJ that he’s Spider-Man at 17:58 always played perfectly into my childhood fantasy of me telling someone I cared about that I had superpowers. It was just so we’ll done
I still recall buying the very first issue back in 2002 (yeah the comics came out late in the UK), it was around the same time the 2002 film was pretty much a big thing and I got hooked on Ultimate Spider-Man after reading that entire first issue and would often had to wait patiently for the next issue. So years later even though I don't collect comics anymore I still recall having a blast reading the Ultimate series and would often go back to reading them from time to time and still love reading them to this day.
From what I've heard, Ultimate is one of the greats when it comes to Spider-Man stories as well as peak Bendis writing. The only Bendis stuff I've read was his Guardians of the Galaxy run, which was okay but plagued with event tie-ins. Hopefully whenever I get around to Ultimate Spider-Man it's a lot more enjoyable.
bro owen is 100% right this book literally changed my life
Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the best comcis ever. Even people that don't like Brian Michael Bendis LOVE Ultimate Spider-Man.
@@ShinbrigTVThat's incredible. If Ultimate Spider-Man resonated with fans that much, even with ones who didn't really care about Bendis' other writing, then it's probably worth getting for the collection. I've never seen a book so universally enjoyed that even people who don't care for that writer's other works still enjoy it.
Heads up though, its heartbreaking. Also the timeline is a bit fucked.
@@naxotogo it’s not that bad, all you have to do is just check what Amazon says is next up. It does get a little confusing though post ultimatum
One of Ultimate Spider-Man’s greatest achievements: making the Clone Saga good
I loved having a new Spiderman to read from the beginning when I was a kid.
Ultimate Spider-Man is one of those series that always leave you smiling in retrospect. I loved the comic , I loved the game and I remember getting Ultimate Spider-man stickers from my doctor as a kid. It can be dated in some ways but Ultimate Spider-Man gets more iconic the older it gets. Plus we got Miles out of this! Great video Owen! 💙
Dude, mad respect for the channel! Spidey was and still is my fav fictional character ever (today i just got some new issues) highly apreciate the content, and yeah, Ultimate Spider-man is special. I read 40 issues last year and thought it was preety damn good!
Thank you!
Ultimate Spider-Man Gotta Be My Favourite Spider Man Comics Of All Time... 🧡
I loved ultimate Spider-man and personally in my opinion this is technically my favorite series written by Brian Michael bendis that actually helped me got into the ultimate marvel universe in my opinion. :)
Really glad that they are re-releasing the whole run in 35 volumes.
People nowadays seek for an adult Peter Parker and I can understand that .
Not only did Superior Spiderman and SM Life Story show us how it could look like but even after 8 Hollywood movies, we only get the „teenager“ version.
Nonetheless, Ultimate SM might be one of the most relatable and exciting stories of all time - right from the origins to the confession and the Sinister Six.
I feel like every character, side or main cast, has his moment and the right to exist.
Compared to the current Spiderman run, it looks exactly like some MCU or Star Wars shows where they just try to put as many characters into the story as they can with barely any logic (Misty Knight, Colleen Wing etc.)
I am so exited, I grew up with Ultimate Spider-Man and still love it to this day
Ultimate Spidey holds a special place in my heart as well. I remember reading these books over and over when I would be out to sea or deployed during my time in the Navy. I still go back and read the whole run once in a while and I agree that the first year or so stands above the rest of it. I've seen a lot of hate for Bendis' writing style but I was a big fan of his and still am. It isn't too much dialouge, it's character development. And Bagley is one of the all time great Spidey artists. In my opinion, the Mount Rushmore of Spidey artists are Ditko, Romita Sr., Mcfarlane and Bagley. Watching your video just reminds me that it's time to dive back into this series again. Thanks, Owen.
Insomniac released their first Spider-Man game on the exact same day Marvel introduced Ultimate Spider-Man to the world, just 18 years later. Either it was just a happy coincidence or they knew what they were doing with that release date.
Same, Owen. Same same same. For me it was a Free Comic Book Day edition of USM #1 I picked up my first ever time in a comic shop, and I fell ALL the way in to all things comics and Superheroes. Never looked back, and Spidey is still my fave ❤
That is awesome!
This was my favorite comic series when I first started reading it. I enjoyed the characters and story arcs.
My favorite storyline and ultimate spider man is the black suit venom saga Ultimate spider man was always great and I was glad to be a part of this series When I was a child being born in the early 2000 I really love your videos Owen I was sincerely hoping that one day You would make a video About the significant importance of Todd McFarlane's spider man iconic trifecta consisting of Spider Man 298 299 300 Even though my favorite is 299 I used to have the issue 300 when I was a kid when my grandmother used to work at Walmart And there was a spider man toy line spiderman origins my grandmother managed to buy me The spider man origins documentary explaining it in grave detail the origins of spider man's black costume And I also had the issue 300 With my spider-man toy Take care and as always I will continue reading comics
Just finished reading USM #160 today after collecting all of the singles in 2022. Great timing!!
I loved it when Ultimate Peter Parker came back to life as this is my favorite version of Peter Parker
Ultimate Spider man is probably my favourite take on Spider-Man, remember discovering this series when I was 16 (despite playing the game a million times when I was younger not knowing it was meant to be I'm continuity with comics) shortly after Homecoming came out, never related to Peter Parker at the time as much as I did with this series when I read it for the first time. (Speaking of Homecoming I really loved how the MCU stretched out Spider-Mans origin the way the Ultimate series did)
I always loved Spider-Man, but I owe the Ultimate Spider-Man comics (since I was already familiar with this incarnation thanks to the 2005 game) as being my reintroduction to the character alongside TASM1 back in 2012 when I stopped following the character after the Spectacular cartoon's cancellation. This series redefined and resparked my love for the character, getting me to truly appreciate how important Peter Parker is (since I usually just cared about the Spidey stuff as a kid), and since my high school library had the entire Bendis and Bagley portion of the run, I read them all during my high school years. While there's some stuff that I've come to not like as much as I did when I first read and some stuff that works better when you're a teenager, I'd still highly recommend Ultimate Spider-Man to someone who wants to read Spidey comics.
Another excellent video! Ultimate Spider-man was definitely the series that got me into comics as well and one of the only Ultimate series that still really holds up. It is definitely my favorite take on Spider-man, with the only run coming close being Superior Spider-man for completely different reasons, and probably my favorite comic series of all time. If I had any criticisms I would say that I wish the Ultimate version of Eddie Brock was less of an outright scumbag and I wish the artwork for Ultimate Six was better, but these are small nitpicks. Also, major props to Bendis to creating a great version of the Clone saga!
A true Peter Parker Ultimate Spider-Man fan. Good to see. Most people don't even know Peter was the first Ultimate Spider-Man.
... most people DEFINITELY know that, even spider-verse included it
This is still my favorite comic series ever
I had read comics as a kid but got older and never touched them again but I started reading ultimate Spider-Man and it was my gateway into comics as well
I actually just started reading this story recently (just read where Peter tell MJ), so I’m glad to see you covering this
Ultimate Spidey was responsible for pulling me back into the world of comic books. I have such a huge appreciation and feeling of nostalgia for this run. I will always recommend these books to anyone looking for a place to start with spidey without needing decades of knowledge leading into it.
in 2020 when I was under quarantine this comic got me through it.
When I first played the Ultimate Spider-Man Video Game, I got to see how cool and awesome the game was. This was the reason why I decided to read the entire Ultimate Marvel Universe starting with Ultimate Spider-man. I purchased almost every collected volume of Ultimate Spider-man, and before that, I purchased some issues of the Ultimates, and Ultimates 2 before I bought 2 collected volumes of Ultimate X-Men. Let's face it, I absolutely love the Ultimate Universe.
Couldn't agree more!
I was reading comics when ultimate came out but Ultimate and Sonic the Hedgehog were the first comics I ever had from start to finish in singles.
I remember getting the preview comic for ultimate in late 99 when I was 6.
First Marvel Comic I have ever read and I liked every single bit of it.
Ultimate Spider-Man, Archie Sonic and All Star Batman & Robin (Unfortunately) were my gateway into the world of comics and I'm forever grateful for it.
Don't discount All-Star Batman & Robin! That book was a lot to take in, but Jim Lee drew a gorgeous comic. He's my favorite artist.
@@marclarusso1484 Of course Jim will deliver, but every work of art, there’s always a story to it. And unfortunately it was a bad story. Respect to you if you liked it, but I really despise that comic.
Wow that was moving toward the end of the video man.
Thank you for speaking about this and show me that there are so many people that just like me loved this series and became something very important in their lives 🧡
As far as I’m concerned, there has never been a greater run in American comic books than Bendis and Bagley on Ultimate Spider-Man.
You should cover more ultimate Spider-Man and ultimate marvel as well as miles morales
God not just one of the best retellings of a hero, but just one of the best comic books ever made, period!!
Even tho it's not 616 this run is such a defining turn for Spider-Man as a character.
I love spiderman and Batman so much growing up both of them embody the best the superhero genre can give ❤
I was reading this comic and I loved how they portrayed Pete this good hearted yet angsty and angry teen which is. Very not far off from his characterization from the early ditko era.
Loved this video dude as I always do. You even LOOK just like Peter down to the haircut and glasses😂
Got me.into comics.
Re-reading Ultimate Spidey now that Omnibuses are coming back.
I thoroughly enjoy your heartfelt videos. Really refreshing.
Glad you like them!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this video! It so eqoleuntly sums up why you, I, and countless others have fallen in love with this character over the years and will continue to do so. Every time I see a child or teen tell me they love Spider-Man, I can't help but smile. I know they will be inspired by Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and the many other characters I fell in love with so many years ago. Well done, Owen!
You are so welcome!
This is my all time favorite spider man run.
The ONLY thing I didn't like was bringing Gwen back as a clone and having her just hang around after that like she never died. And then there was that forced romance between her and Peter.
Other than that it's almost perfect.
*I love reading the Ultimate Spider-Man Marvel comics since my pre-teen and adolescent years, as well as my adulthood! Ultimate Marvel comics is definitely providing some innovative inspiration/elements to the popular, successful, extraordinarily awesome, and influential MCU films since 2008! I'm definitely looking forward to seeing Tom Holland 's version of our beloved, benevolent, intelligent, spunky, winsome web-slinging ,friendly neighborhood Marvel superhuman /superhero ,Peter Parker aka Spider-Man dance against the MCU film/Ultimate versions of his rogues gallery such as Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman, Electro , Kraven the Hunter/Huntress, and Dr.Conrad Markus /Venom in future MCU films, guys and gals!* ^-^
why does this read like an AI generated comment
Ultimate Spider-Man really changed the way comic stories were told - the pace and dialogue inparticular. The script and art were consistantly excellent.
Phenomenal video. The positive message really elevated the series. Cheers.
Ultimate Spider-Man will always have a Special Place in my Mind. This Series was part of The Reason Spidey has become probably One of my Favorite Characters Ever. Ultimate #160 still gets to me all these years later. Great Video, Man.
Great video 👏👏👏. Ultimate Spider-Man is my favorite comic and version (in the comics, tasm in the movies). The first time that i read it i was13 and it was after the goblin fight at the school and kraven goes to school to track spiderman's scent. After so many years later sometimes i read it again from the 1 to the 160. This comic has a place in my heart ❤🕸🕷❤
I loved ultimate comics. I’ve Read everything in the 1610 from the first issue of ultimate Spider-Man up to ultimatum. I also grew up on the 90s cartoons. Ultimate X-Men had its ups and downs but was my favorite
Man, what a great video. Another one, I mean.
While I haven’t read much of Ultimate Spidey, I’ve read a lot of Miles’ stuff by Bendis and i connected to it in a similar way. There’s a scene where Miles’ uncle tells him he is “just like me”, and seeing Miles struggle to reconcile who he wants to be with who he feels doomed to become really resonated with me.
As someone who’s new to comics, I appreciate your work on this channel. I look forward to your future stuff, and I honestly wouldn’t mind more of you sharing your own experiences and thoughts in the future. I know you want to be objective, but this was really cool to hear!
Trully one of my favorites in comic book series, Congratulations Owen and Happy new year 😁🎖🥇👏👍👌🤗🥳🥳🏆🏆🏆🏆
I read the first 5 issues of Ultimate Spider Man 3 months ago and I gotta say it was incredible. Although it's not the first comic I read It's definitely one of my Favorite Comics of all time
Ultimate Spider-Man brought me back to reading comics after 15 years of not paying attention to them. I love this book as it doesn’t get bogged down with 616 Spider-Man’s history. Great video! I always enjoy your content!
That's awesome! Thank you.
Thanks for making this videos !
My pleasure!
Bought volume one well over a decade ago at Barnes & Noble off the Sunrise Highway in Massapequa Park.
Legit love your videos mate, awesome stuff! ❤
Thank you so much 💖
Both Ultimate and 616 are my fav ❤
Beautiful video! I enjoyed it from the beggining until the end. I feel absolutely more identificated in this version of Peter Parker than another. This comic was love, learning, and ultimate!
Wow, thank you!
The British reprints in Astonishing Spider-Man was the first comic book I ever got! When Uk reprints of Ultimate started I was in year 6 and it became my life! I owe them two comics my life obsession with the medium! And U.S.M is still an unrivalled run! Thanks for covering!
Your videos are always so easy to watch and listen to and I love the topics you choose to talk about. Thanks for doing what you do, Owen. The world and my life in particular are better for it
Wow, thank you!
Love the video and your connection to the Ultimate Spider-Man series. I am a big fan of that first year as well.
Awesome! Thank you!
I love this comic series! It’s absolutely one of the best interpretations of Spider-Man. It would be incredible if Tom Holland’s next Spider-Man trilogy took a lot of inspiration from Ultimate Spider-Man.
Not only the Ultimate run, but the JMS run as well!
I know exactly how you feel Owen. USM was also my gateway and til this day is still my favorite. I miss that version of the Ultimate Universe and Ultimate Peter so much.
Hey! Love these! Keep them up mate 👍🏻
Thanks! Will do!
I loved the ultimate Spider-Man comics!
I had a very similar experience with Ultimate Spider-man some 20 years ago. It was the first ongoing series I invested myself in, I loved the cartoons and before the movies I was looking for new media involving my favourite heroes. When I heard about a fresh start about a modern day Spider-man, I was instantly intrigued. I mean rebooting a hero using today's standard and mentality was at the time very radical, especially with one of the very biggest, and arguably, greatest hero of all time. My love faded when I had to start using my money for other resources but I still have my collection, and I have nothing but found memories of rereading each book over and over and over. Truly one of the very best comic runs ever. You have immaculate taste.
I grew up on Spider-Man, I got into the game when Maximum Carnage hit, I was fairly astonished at all the chaos going on and the amusing art of the 90's. When this tittle launched in early 2000 I was in my 20's and it was like falling in love wth character all over again, like you this is probably the only comic I stuck with until they published the last issue, I only stuck with Miles when he took over just to see Peter's last hurrah as the character in the ultimate Universe. Awesome video as usual Owen, thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Ultimate Spiderman was the comic that made me a fan of spiderman and despite his age he was the most well developed, consistent and mature spiderman I've read bar none
Damn I love your videos, they are so introspective. These videos also depict these tales from a different perspective and passion that stands in stark contrast to channels like Comicstorian and ComicsExplained (not to take away from either of them).
Ultimate spider man is and always will be one of my favorite comic book series I mean the art the writing and the jokes who wouldn’t love it
Storytime: Much like you, I was into superheroes since I was little. The first movie my dad took me to see was Batman and Robin (I was too young to remember, but my dad talks about it like it gives him 'Nam flashbacks). I was weaned on superhero shows from Spider-Man to the DCAU and beyond.
I had read the occasional comic, like I remember specifically an issue of a youth-oriented Spidey comic that retold Doc Ock's origin and had Human Torch. But, much like you, Ultimate Spider-Man was my true gateway. My 11th birthday, 2006, I got the Ultimate Spider-Man game used from Gamestop then that same night, my grandpa gave me the trade of the Ultimate Venom arc, which both I and my sibling practically memorized.
Throughout middle school, I was pretty fully a member of the Merry Marvel Marching Society (I was one of those who thought Superman was boring), then in high school I became more into DC. Over the last couple years, though, I've found myself gravitating back into Marvel to the point where I think I prefer it.
But through it all, I trace it back to Ultimate Spider-Man. Even with it's problems, like Bagley's inability to draw more than one face, or the fact that they occasionally drop an r-slur, or that Peter is often characterized as a bit of a prick, I can't help but call it my favorite comic of all time.
I Can’t Wait Anymore !!!
Oh my god this is one of my favorite videos from you! You've outdone yourself with this one owen!
Wow, thank you!
@@OwenLikesComics no problem!
Love this book.
Would love to see you do Bendis's daredevil
A great video to start the year off Owen. USM remains a favorite of mine as well
Thank you!
Hey- finished reading all of the Ultimate Spider-Man collections finally last year. I loved it and I love SpiderMan. Great comicbook 😊
Thanks for sharing!
Great job man on the video on how Ultimate spider-man change your life ;)
Thank you!
@@OwenLikesComics your welcome :)
I've never particularly been big into Spidey, but even I'll admit that Ultimate Spider-Man was pretty damn good
This was the first ongoing series I became invested in as well, especially since I loved being able to follow a version of the character from the very beginning. I collected in trades and still proudly own all 33 volumes from Peter to Miles, and I remember reading the early stuff over and over as a kid. As burnt out as I am on Bendis now, he did some good work in creating a unique Spider-Verse (even though as a kid I felt his dialogue could've been better).
Ultimate Spider-man was my first introduction to Marvel comics too. I’d read some DC before but never Marvel. Ended up collecting the TPB for the whole ultimate universe up until Ultimatum. Eventually I gave them away to a friend due to needing to create space when my first child was born but they’ll always be important to me.
ultimate is so hated by the majority of spidey “fans” but he’s my personal favorite iteration of the character. He’s why i started reading Spidey comics and even introduced into Miles, my top 3 fav spider-people
always wished they adapted the 1610 Spidey more accurately into the MCU, especially since both versions are obviously aiming to be modern for the times they’re in
to me, what makes the character so unique is that Spider-Man isn’t a “man”. It’s a kid in spandex trying to do what’s right. In fact that’s what made him special initially, Spidey was one of, if not the first kid superhero to NOT be a sidekick. Spider-Man (IMO) is best when he’s just a kid balancing work, school and his superhero life. Not everyone can relate to being an adult, but everyone knows what it’s like to be a kid, which is where spidey shines best imo. I would’ve loved to see 1610 grow up into a young man, but i love the stories we got with him as a teenager
Beautiful video Owen, it truly feels it really influenced in your personal life (as to many that came from that generation on that time) and as always for Marvel Comics, it always delivered with Spider-Man and this fresh take with the Ultimate universe, was truly something else. Me that I was born in 1984, I managed to read this fresh take and I loved it as much as the 617 stories, because it was a fresh take with the same teachings and growth that many of us readers had faced thru while growing up. And no matter what Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man's respective legacies will always endure no matter what generation comes from. As for me, I started reading the Ultimate universe with The Ultimates and Ultimate X-Men, the latter with depth because I always loved the X-Men and specially (despite being a general cliche for anybody apparently): Wolverine. And as I was already finishing college, I always found the same teoublesome life that Ultimate Logan had, I was let down by society and being pushed being a bad-resentful-boy until, I got along with the right people in order for me to become a better man again and not just an animal.
Kudos for this video👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼, saludos desde Bolivia 👍🏼😎🇧🇴
P.S.: I apologize for the long comment😅👍🏼
Ultimate Spider-Man is Bendis at his best. Great video!
It really is!
Reading my brothers mountain of ultimate spider-man single issues is the reason i got into comics. That and watching Smallville.
Been wanting to read this for awhile since I heard it’s a good place to start with the Web-head (haven’t read that many Marvel comics overall) but I think I’ll be heading to my comic shop tomorrow. Great job, Owen.
Tim
Thanks Tim! Let me know what you think if/when you start reading it.
@@OwenLikesComics That’s a promise!
Two foundational comics for me were spider-girl and ultimate spider-man because they were in my elementary school library.
I absolutely adore this series, the Barnes and Noble collection of the first 3 hardcovers was my very first omnibus and despite being dog eared and worn out from regular reading is still a prize possession. I often say that no matter what your feelings on more recent work, this book alone is still good enough to put Bendis among the best comic writers of all time!
Love this video! Ultimate Spider Man is the first comic I ever read and it's a very similar situation to yourself. I spent 2 years rebuilding the collection from beginning to end, a few years back. Now I'm looking to upgrade to the omnibus versions. To go with the Miles Morales Omnibus!
Thanks for sharing!
@@OwenLikesComics thanks for the quality content!
The only USM I know is the show maybe a video about that someday very underrated
Although I didn’t read Ultimate Spider-Man until later on I could make the same video for myself about the Ultimates themselves and how they where a huge part of my life
Ultimate spider man is one of my all time favorite comic series the storytelling is great bendis despite his faults is one of the all time great spidey writers along with Lee Conway and slott. The art is fantastic and it's clearly the definitive artwork of Bagley's career. This was the crown jewel of the ultimate marvel line and it saved marvel as a company
Unironically my first comic I collected was superior spiderman because through shows and childhood the status quo was drilled into my head and i loved the difference in story, ultimate was 2nd spiderman run and it still hits and is worth re-reading to this day
