I like that there’s more to this than another “spider-man is married” story. It’s more of a subversion of the original Ultimate Spider-man. Instead of him being a young spider-man he gets his powers way later in life. I am honestly more excited to see an uncle Ben be a supporting character in Spider-man and how Hick Ms reimagines Peter’s rogues gallery One thing that has me worried is that it seems to be part of a larger story instead of being more self contained like the original run.

Although, maybe this Spider-man will take up a more central role in shaping "Avengers" of this world, maybe even lead them alongside Captain America? That would be interesting.
Even as a teenager reading Spidey, I always liked the more grown-up version where he had college student and then adult life problems. So it's cool of them to give it another shot, and not make him miserable. I also really like Miles Morales but that's more like a tangent compared to this new Ultimate Spider-Man.
I remember Spider-Man best from the '90s he was 28 years old a photographer at The daily bugle and married to Mary Jane . after the clone saga in the 90s it went downhill .
The great things about this comic are Peter being married to MJ with kids, Uncle being alive and becoming editor of the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson giving Peter his tie and viewing him like a son, and Tony giving Peter a radioactive spider so that Peter would become Spider-Man since it’s his missing piece. Let’s hope that this series improve itself and hope that it will be great.
I feel like in this universe, the lesson peter needs to learn isn't that great power comes with great responsibility but rather, great responsibilities require greater power to meet and exceed. I'm expecting a story about peter learning to struggle with using the powers he needs to meet his own expectations or the struggles that are involved in the gaining the power to meet his great responsibilites.

Honestly, this is one of the best Spider-Man comics to come out in a long time. A lot of the stories coming from the main universe have been god awful in recent runs, especially the really bad Peter/MJ stuff and the introduction of Paul, so this is really refreshing to see. It's so nice to see Peter just be happy for once and have his life together, rather than just being a constant punching bag that is perpetually suffering and not being allowed to grow or change. Im really digging a lot of the differences with this new universe and the classic. JJJ's bromance with (Spoiler Character) is something i never knew i needed until we got it
You are *far* from the only person who thinks that Reed Richards is one bad decision away from being an honest-to-goodness villain. Not even one bad day, he just may someday come up with the wrong idea, follow it to its completion, and become as much a threat as Doom...
That's honestly kind of the point of The Maker. It has been said by tons of characters that the only thing keeping Reed grounded is his family. The Maker comes from the original Ultimate Universe, a universe where the F4 disbanded. Without his family, nothing held him back.
I mean, I'm a fan of Reed and personally I just treat Stan Lee written comics as having an unreliable narrator, because otherwise every man is essentially just as misogynistic as 60s Reed. Yeah, Reed is one bad decision away from becoming a villain -- and I think Doom is perhaps prescient in sensing that. But he's equally close to becoming not exactly a villain but a tragedy nonetheless. The classic WHAT IF THE INVISIBLE GIRL HAD DIED...? issue did this to great effect, had a funeral that was among the best sequences I've ever read in a comic, and resurrected a classic Jack Kirby trope: Reed plus stubble equals scary. Any time a Reed Richards works on a problem long enough to get five o'clock shadow, things are about to get intense.
@@runbaa9285that nots the only thing. Reed 1610 had a completely different life. I think 1610 Reed’s personality defects can be traced back to his fathers abuse that 616 Reed didn’t have to deal with
I think the decision to become spier-man a fascinating direction, that says a lot about Peter as a person, not just in this universe. Regardless of if you believe in destiny or anything like that, the choice to become spider-man, the choice to do more, regardless of the potential sacrifice I think does echo Peters character well. Its just a nice upside that us spidey fans also get to see Peter happy for once, especially given recent mainline spidey comics.
They made a lot of questionable choices with the ultimate universe, but I admired that they actually did something different from the mainstream storylines (Peter dying, Reed being evil, Sue and Ben getting together), as opposed to just saying it and then backpedaling. I am so into this new Spider-Man though, really looking forward for more.
My head canon is that The Maker is really a mind-switched Victor Von Damme inside Reed Richards’ body. A Superior Mr. Fantastic, so to speak. The mindswap trope with Doom and Reed was set up in the FF’s Lee/Kirby run. So much so that I wonder if the option to make it a permanent aspect of the Ultimate FF was introduced as a way to further make the Ultimate Universe separate from the 616 Universe. The storyline that convinced me that maybe Ultimate Reed wasn’t Ultimate Reed was in one of the crossovers where Reed turns against the FF and has servant minions that look awfully demonic to me. 616 Doom had recently gone crazier with his magic use during Mark Waid’s run on the FF, so maybe I was reading into events a bit more than may have been intended. But I still think of The Maker as Superior Ultimate Reed Richards.
What I liked about this story is Peter being happy about family life and having a stable relationship with MJ. Who knew that a Spider-Man in his mid thirties would actually be so refreshing? It feels like Peter is actually growing up. So far I am intrigued by this new Ultimate universe and hopefully the sells of Ultimate Spider-Man comics will continue to be good.
I read issue one and absolutely loved it! The fact that peter was married is what made me want to buy the comic but this new take on the character and the fact that uncle ben will be alive is so interesting. I want to see how a living uncle ben affects who peter is as a hero, for better and for worse. I truly don't know what to expect from this spider-man story and that makes me legitimately excited in a way I haven't been in a long time. Also, even though I dont have a wife and kids I really relate to this peter parker. Maybe its the fact that we both have brown hair and beards.
It's interesting that this Ultimate Universe kind of starts with baggage, but kind of doesn't. I don't think the goal is necessarily to attract new readers so much as it is to bring back old ones. But it does still allow for new beginnings, because the heroes are still coming into their powers. It is their start. Anyhow, I thought this issue was great and yeah, Pete and MJ belong together. If main universe won't ever restore that, I hope this one keeps it. There can be growth even with some things staying consistent.
I think I discovered your channel while looking up reviews for Spider-Man Bloodline! It's nice to see this kind of story being explored again (hopefully more successfully this time)
Just wanted to say your creativity reaches new heights with each video. Every word is said with elegance. U inspire me to be a better comic tuber with each upload!!!!! Salute!
I highly encourage Sasha and everyone else to check out the Elseworld Exchange episode where they discuss this. I also highly encourage Sal to have Sasha as a guest
I just need to take a moment to express my gratitude how much I love these videos... I put them on to fall asleep because it relaxes me to think about comics. You are a real treasure.
I just read this to avoid spoilers from your video. And then I read the Ultimate Universe oneshot. And then I read the Ultimate Invasion story. I'm _hooked_ for real. This is the best Marvel has put out in generations. This feels like 2099, Ultimate Universe, and Doomsday Clock had a baby.
This comic has done what many a good first issue has done - reel in the readers. But - and I need to emphasize this - DO NOT expect everything to play out in a smooth manner. Fans really want a book about a married Peter being Spiderman, which this book provides, but this is a different Peter, who has faced different circumstances in his life, married to a different MJ. What I'm saying is - keep an open mind to everything about to happen.
What you said. For better or worse, this is a Peter Parker unencumbered by decades of continuity. He's not the 616 Peter, nor should we expect him to be.
This Peter actually may be slightly older than 616-Peter, IIRC, when NuUlt-Peter gets his powers, it is said he should have been bitten 20 years ago. If Peter was still supposed to be bitten at 15, that would make him 35, older than 616-Peter, who is a perpetual 29. Also, LUL. Shoutout to the joke "That's the Silver Age Lies Cover". Never forgetting the physical clickbait from the Silver Age.
The Maker setting things up that change the timeline is so much like Doomsday Clock and Dr. Manhattan. I love Hickman and the Maker is such an interesting character.
I said the same on someone's Twitter post on this new Ultimate Spider-Man. It's almost exactly what Dr. Manhattan did to create the New 52 universe by removing the JSA's existence, which led to a domino effect: Clark never becomes Superboy to save his parents from a car accident, which in turn prevents the formation of the Legion of Superheroes in the 31st Century. The general public never has a prior experience with Superheroes before Superman in the modern day, so people are more afraid of them.
I didn't care about the new ultimate universe at first, but I do like an older spiderman and this art style suits me I'm actually into this and may pick up some issues, I just hope him and MJ stay okay (can have issues, but relationships can stay together too COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY)
My favorite thing from this is how good it feels to have Peter with a family, both Ben and Jamison included. Spiderman is the kind of hero who is at his peak with a loving family and community helping to remind him what exactly he is fighting for. Constantly putting him through the wringer with nothing good coming and staying makes him less relatable and seem like he's overcoming great odds to being a pitiful basket case partaking in a futile task
I am just happy to see Peter with not only M.J. but a family. It just makes me worried about how much of a life he can have taken away. I hope he gets to keep some of this growth and stability for some time before Peter is made to suffer as always.
Man, that J. Scott Campbell cover goes so hard Something that Sal from Comicpop pointed out is that Peter is basically a stand in for this comic's main audience: the disillusioned, tired millennial, going back and reading it, it feels like a very cathartic issue. It's Peter choosing to be Spider-Man, choosing something that could be a HUGE risk to himself, his wife, his kids, his co-workers, but he chooses it none the less; because he was given the choice, it wasn't thrust upon him like everything else seems to be in his life.
12:30 I don't see anyone discussing _which_ costume Tony gave him. Bio-organic. Black. Liquid. The Maker had to prevent two different beings here, and he stored them together. This is Peter + The Symbiote. This is a world where Peter Parker is a mature adult who can take care of the Symbiote and guide him like the child he is.
I stopped actively reading comics a long time ago BUT I subscribed to and am reading all the comics related to this new ultimate universe, it’s great so far and has me so excited for more
Great review as always Sasha! I really enjoyed this first issue and will be reading along with you for as long as it lasts. I loved Hickman's previous work, so I was already on board there. I also enjoyed the Bendis/Bagley run. Fun fact: Mark Bagely was the one who won the Marvel Try-Out Book contest back in the 80s. Anyway, I'm psyched to see where Hickman takes this story. Uncle Ben being around is a refreshing element and I enjoy Peter and MJ's relationship. They are best friends that got married and stayed that way. It's rare in this world and beautiful..
Sounds a bit slow to me as a first issue, but having an older Peter Parker with a family and an alive Ben, does present interesting possibilities going forward. Be interesting to see how long it lasts.
Honestly, super excited for this. I get so tired with some comics making great gains in character development only to reset everything when the next writer takes over. Stories like this and the murphyverse establish stakes and a sense of time that is refreshing and meaningful.
What I immediately thought about this issue was that it hits at the heartstrings of someone older, and I'd like to think that it's an awareness of the readerbase for this. People who grew up following the original Ultimates run will be older by now, and I think the story that's being told here hits pretty good for folks in their mid 20's-40's who might feel that their life is starting to stagnate.
This should be the storyline mirrored with Tobey Macquire in movies for that setting. Take this exact concept and put him as Peter. Give him a family, let him work out the issues with MJ, and make them awesome. Just imagine....
That idea of a Marvel universe where there a basically no super heroes since their core events didn't happen reminds me a bit of the mini series Ruins.
My problem is that they're doing exactly what they did with the original Ultimate universe. They make a universe with variants of the same characters that new readers won't have to read to get into it. But...We all know how these end up. Eventually the company stops pushing it and the writers go over the top and it ends in flames. I know everyone is "le gasp" because HIckman is working on it. But we saw how X-Men ended up. Bendis started as a cosmic savior and we see where he is now. Or actually we don't. "If you live long enough, you become the villain." I like Hickman's writing. But I am REALLY tired of his damned data walls that eat up half of a book.
1. There are no data pages in ultimate spider-man #1. So far hickman is taking a more grounded/slice of life approach here which is refreshing. The data pages were reserved for the ultimate invasion miniseries and there they were arguably useful and important for helping to set up what exactly the new universe was because the miniseries was only 4 issues long. 2. Yes the original Ultimate universe flared out and crashed and burned because the writers went over the top but that doesn't mean this one will. There isn't a focus on being "edgy" with this universe and mark Millar and jeph Loeb aren't involved in any way. If you want evidence that an alternate universe line can work just look at the MC2 comics. Spider-girl lasted for over 100 issues and had some spin offs. The line didn't last forever and obviously Spider-girl was the most successful title, but the MC2 as a whole had a pretty good run with some fun and entertaining stories. Did it last forever? No but I don't expect this series to last forever any more than I expect my favorite TV shows to last forever. Hickman is smart enough not to do another event like ultimatum. We are only a few issues in this new universe. Let's see what ideas the writers have before we start working about all the ways it could go wrong.
I enjoyed this issue more than I really expected to. Marco Chichetto's art lends a grounded, real life feel that the story needed in order to hit home the fact that this is a Peter Parker who has never been Spider-Man.
On the note of Marvel editorial's "Adult Spider-Man/Peter Parker is relatable" I may note that I was in middle school when I first watch Into The Spider-Verse and played Spider-Man PS4 and I (and my roommate) loved Peter Parker in both of those and now I'm a college student and I loved this issue, almost as if it's painfully obvious to everyone (including Marvel editorial) that saying that Spider-Man/Peter Parker isn't relatable when he's an adult is just a bad excuse for them to continue down their series of garbage mandates and hiring crappy writers like Zeb Wells... oh wait is obviously is that.
This issue was wonderful, it really reminded me a lot of the film Unbreakable, with Peter feeling like he’s meant for more. I’m so happy Peter is being written with care again and actually going through development. I’m not even a huge Hickman fan but I can’t wait for the next issue.
And the first issue is sought after that pre-orders are arriving late and they all sold out of stores day one, I think they might stop torturing everyone's favorite wall-crawler especially after how successful this was.... Ok, who am I kidding they're still gonna make 616 Spidey's life hell for fun
I am worried about the loss of Peter's iconic tragic origin, especially the "lesson" of indirectly dooming someone close to him by deliberately choosing not to use his great power. I am intrigued to see what if anything this version does with that. It's not just about the powers, Tony!
9:02 To be fair, Ultimate Jameson had a similar relationship to his Peter by the end as well, and *died* protecting Miles Morales from the Green Goblin. Raimi-Verse Jameson owed a lot to the 1610 version.
I have my fondness for MJ and Peter from the 616 universe but by the end of the issue I was most excited about Ben and Jonah's relationship! Didn't expect that.
Amazing 🤩 Amanda 🤦🏾♂️ Oh I’m sorry Sensational Sasha 😝 Anyway, love having Peter & MJ back together , but I am soooo afraid with what the way they can never have Spidey happy , that they might make the loss of one or both of his children to make him learn the great responsibility theme …🙏🏾 not , Keep Up The Outstanding Work Sasha 🖖🏾

Loved this video. Made me pick up the floppy instead of waiting for the trade which I haven't done in years. Thanks for the review!
Hickman stated this Peter was inspired by Peter B from the Spider-Verse movies. Peter B just casually proving why hes the goat.
This series made me fall in love with Spider-Man again!
Super excited to see where this comic goes. Seeing issue 2 preview has me even more excited.
It's nice to see this kind of story being explored again (hopefully more successfully this time)
13:52 Admittedly the same can be said about the first couple of issues of the original Ultimate Spider-Man run.
Honestly Ben and JJ's friendship and their jobs was my favourite part. If either one of them dies or turns evil I will be sad for rest of my life.
This is what we ever wanted since before the One More Day. Peter having a happy life, married with MJ and have 2 kids ❤🕷
10:30 I think this works fairly well here because The Maker didn't allow that to happen the same.
@@foldabotZ Exactly my thoughts! It's interesting how similar they are.
I didn't care about the new ultimate universe at first, but I do like an older spiderman and this art style suits me
I'm actually into this and may pick up some issues, I just hope him and MJ stay okay (can have issues, but relationships can stay together too COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY)
Wow, I can't remember the last time you covered anything about Marvel! Thank you!
Man, that J. Scott Campbell cover goes so hard
Something that Sal from Comicpop pointed out is that Peter is basically a stand in for this comic's main audience: the disillusioned, tired millennial, going back and reading it, it feels like a very cathartic issue.
This is a world where Peter Parker is a mature adult who can take care of the Symbiote and guide him like the child he is.
the setup for this series has me super intrigued. curious to see where it goes next!
I said it once I'll say it again: Finally I can enjoy reading, and eagerly await reading a new Spider-Man comic.
I stopped actively reading comics a long time ago BUT I subscribed to and am reading all the comics related to this new ultimate universe, it’s great so far and has me so excited for more
look i didnt know i need an JJJ and uncle bean team up book
until i got this
I like the Black Widow hairdo. I may not come for the hair but it is just one aspect of your channel that keeps me coming back.
Your analyses are a joy.
Sounds a bit slow to me as a first issue, but having an older Peter Parker with a family and an alive Ben, does present interesting possibilities going forward. Be interesting to see how long it lasts.
Honestly this was my favorite spiderman issue in years
Honestly, super excited for this. I get so tired with some comics making great gains in character development only to reset everything when the next writer takes over. Stories like this and the murphyverse establish stakes and a sense of time that is refreshing and meaningful.
Another of plenty of reasons why I adore Sasha: the way she thinks and how she goes deep into the stories and search for potential in them.
I’m a huge fan of both Ultimate Comics and Spider-Girl, so this sounds fantastic! Thanks for covering it, and you are rocking the Mary Jane look! 😁😁😁
I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading the first issue. We got together at our comic book store and had a nice discussion.
This sounds right up my alley!
That idea of a Marvel universe where there a basically no super heroes since their core events didn't happen reminds me a bit of the mini series Ruins.
This is actually awesome, I hope they keep it around. Really talking to the now mature audience that should have grown up with Spider-Man
So this IS the ULTIMATE universe..... but only by name.
The Blob was such a left turn.
Oh shit the MJ wig is coming out, this is going to be a real one.
This was the best issue of Spider-Man I've read in years
I'll tell you this, this is the first comicbook floppy series I've purchased on release since Spider-Men. So it worked.
I’m interested in reading the first volume of this when this hits trade paperback.
Made me love Spider-Man comics again!
Wait, Aunt May is dead? Is that the new Marvel rule? You can have Aunt May or Mary Jane but you can't have both? Why, lol!?
Been waiting for HIckman to write Spider-Man since his issue of FF where Peter and Johnny Storm were roommates. I loved this first issue!
Great review
This issue was wonderful, it really reminded me a lot of the film Unbreakable, with Peter feeling like he’s meant for more. I’m so happy Peter is being written with care again and actually going through development. I’m not even a huge Hickman fan but I can’t wait for the next issue.
The Sacred Numbers bless this video.
I think those Editor notes should be mandatory adds to comics. The same way citing your sources is mandatory in collage papers.
I enjoy your deep dive video essay on the new Spiderman
If I had my way, in the main universe this would be around the time Peter dons some sort of Spiderman Unlimited like Costume.
An adult Peter and MJ! I should pick this up, even though I don't buy comics these days. And I totally agree with you re: Editors' notes.
It’s the first time I’ve been excited reading new Spider-Man in a long long time. I hope Hickman stays with this.

To be fair, Ultimate Jameson had a similar relationship to his Peter by the end as well, and *died* protecting Miles Morales from the Green Goblin. Raimi-Verse Jameson owed a lot to the 1610 version.
Ben and Jameson being friends is such a brilliant idea.
I admit that I am liking this older take on Spiderman/Peter Parker.
They better not be planning a new Ultimatum in this reboot.
I’ll join you in that fantasy of a long-running comic. No renumberings, no disruptions, no gimmicks. Remember when even someone like Captain Atom could get 50+ issues?
I like this take on Spier-Man. Ben being alive, Jameson being friends with Ben, Peter and MJ being together with kids. I am kinda hyped for this one.
