I have a 3 door red Polo GTI, ordered by me in 2007, the 1.8T 20V. I'm the only one owner, the car has now 301'000 km on the clock and still works like a charm. I always loved the Tartan seats!
In the late 70s VW was using fabric like this in the camper vans' interior. Bold fabrics brought attention to the interior and brightened it up so I'm not surprised they would use it to get attention in the new GTI. My first MK1 Golf was a '78 Diesel and I've had a few since. I still have the '86 GTI my Dad bought brand new. It has an ABA bottom end and a longer gear ratio trans so I can do 70-80mph on the highway here in California.
I find it hilarious that two young fellas are telling the history I remember so well . started life fixing old VWs in a lock up garage . Even had a orange All-agro with beige interior as a runabout for a while ..that square wheel ....absolute nonsense . it has a sign on the back saying "most cars turns heads this one turns stomachs. "
@@427Motorsports For sure , really good you guys like these dog old motors and make videos about them. They are still worthy of respect, and unlike the US where they fight to keep these old cars on the road ....in the UK they just mostly get discarded . I rarely see another W123 out and about , which is a shame as it gets lots of interest wherever it goes and is a really nice drive. More power to you .
I’ve had 50’s-60’s aircooled VW’s for about 25 years now, never a watercooled VW. My wife bugged me for over 10 years to get a “Golf”. I finally agreed, and said it HAD to be a manual GTI only. Didn’t care about the color. I showed her pics of a blue MK7.5 listed locally with the cloth seats. She said she really didn’t think it looked that great. I said, “THIS is what a GTI has, and I’m not paying for leather”. We went and looked at it in person and damn, she LOVED it seeing in person! The seats and shift knob are my favorite visuals of the car. It’s a great driver
Always loved my Tartan Seats and even now prefer them to Leather / Pleather! I do love the black leather though so a bit of a conflict…anyway, love the history of it and had both Mk1 and Mk2 GTI’s with Tartan seats! Thanks for posting! UA-cam had not been pushing videos to me so I need to make a point of looking for ya!
QOTSA link 👌, next step Foo fighters and a segway to history of VW in Japan. Keep up the great content lads 👍 Any word on 40th anniversary event for mk2 group?
Great video but a slight update. When the Mk1 gained larger rear lights it lost the tartan seats. The seats were then mainly black with vertical stripes linked to the body colour. The Mk2 on launch also had vertical striped seats and then horizontal striped seats from the 86 model year until the refresh that deleted the quarterlights where it returned to tartan.
6:35 As the article shown clearly (and correctly) says, ‘Plaid’ is an item of clothing, and you still got it wrong! Tartan is a pattern, Plaid is a garment.
I love the tartan seats in my Mk7 GTi… thanks for the video. You guys need to visit South Africa, definitely the biggest and best VW scene/enthusiasts.
We here in south africa got a beetle called a SP, it had twin carbs, rostyle mag wheels and most importantly pre-dated the GTi with Tartan seats, however looking back, South Africa got the Gti a year later than the rest of the world if I remember correctly, and the SP was one of the last models sold, so they might been made at around the same time. The colour of the tartan corresponded with the exterior colour. I remember the headrests looking very similar to the Golf units, as well as the basic shape of the seat. ua-cam.com/video/ld8VH2SrO_s/v-deo.html

I bought a Golf 5 GTI for my mother… she loves the Tartan seats, and the car as well!
Clicked for the QOTSA reference. Stayed for the classic VW content 😊
I put tartan in my E36's door cards, so it's good to know a little history about the pattern :D

I love the seats they put in the GTD same sort of pattern as the GTI but white & black

The lads at I think MLVW are hosting one. Someone is, anyway. We don't really bother with meets any more to be honest!

Knew about the Mk2 but not about the Mk1! Our knowledge is really limited on the Mk1s, they’re so expensive now. Cheers for the tip!
Made sure my mk6 gti Wolfsburg edition came with the tartan seats 🤌🏾
Interesting stuff. Do you know which Mk2's had recaro seats? Or was it just an option?
An option only, mainly just seen on GTIs :)

Side note the MK3 GTi kinda got plaid in some markets. "Sport plaid" just not traditional.
Cheers!!
Literally never seen a Mk3 plaid before I’ll have to have a look!

Not sure if VW got there first but 1970s Fords, Triumphs and Vauxhalls all had models with tartan seats.
Not sure either actually! We miss the nice patterns lmao

The Golf GTI Cabriolet didn't have Tartan seats so that's another one for your mk1 video

My GTD has tartan seats 😃
It does indeed - we recently did a video on the GTD too!
My mom got herself a golf 8 gti. She absolutely hates that car but she loves the thing on the seats
The mk8 is just brilliant. Best modern GTI ever.

BTW: I just stumbled across your channel. Instantly subscribed. Love your stuff! And I don't even own a VW!
But early Mk3 GTIs DID come with a version of "sport" plaid seats... and the Mk3 was the only GTI with legendary PARTY SEATS!
Not over here that we can see unfortunately... And you're right! More importantly though, the Mk3 had Pink Floyd seats, which is even cooler!

Check the VW T2 Westfalia and its tartan seats.
Then you will see where the idea came from.

The person who designed it literally said why
Mk3s had plaid. I actually have a spare set of them

Nope USA. Look up mk3 gti sport plaid seats. They were blue green and red.
Well, that'll do it. Lmao. We're an Irish channel covering the Irish and UK market.
