You missed Franz Kafka. He toiled at an insurance company and hated it. He's work a full day, then write another eight hours.
T.S. Eliot worked as a bank clerk for at least a decade (then became a partner at a book publisher) despite becoming one of the most famous Anglo-American poets of the 20th century. Maier is particularly interesting, her photographs are the real deal, she had an artist's eye, she never sought fame and took the photos for her own satisfaction, it was sheer luck that someone found them who could appreciate the artistry of them.
Emily Dickinson anyone? Her family and friends never even realized she was a poet until after her death.
This week, after yet another put-down, another rejection, I came so close to throwing out all my drawings. I was going to give up and walk away.
Struggling in my day job, minimum wage cleaning, I have had my hours reduced well below the point at which I can support myself. My drawings and artwork don't make any money and my greetings cards sales don't cover their own listings costs on etsy. I figured after all these years it was time to quit.
Yesterday, I sat there for an hour, staring at a blank page. Doing nothing. Nothing came out. I had lost all inspiration and enthusiasm for my artwork.
Thank you TopTenz team for making this video. I won't give up just yet. Maybe I will take a break, but I won't give up.
The moment someone makes drawings, paintings, music, just to sell, it stops being art. Not saying it's your case though.
My heart sank once when I read Alan Moore mention his day job in an interview. I was like, if Alan Moore has a day job, clearly there is no hope for me.
This is why I tell people to hold to my paintings,so they can get rich, when I'm dead.
I look forward to these every day.
As an Artist I had some boring jobs.. I had to or I'd starve!
you shoulda starved. makes for better art. stay hungry!
one of my favorite videos you've ever produced... inspiring
GREAT VIDEO! EXCELLENT INFORMATION
This is so exciting. I loved this video!
Always sign your art prominently. You never know. Art is subjective after all. Look at Grandma Moses!
Yes. To be honest I'm not sure why she got so famous.
Love it that in my related feed here I have "Inside the mind of a master procrastinator" and "New Zeeland´s lost Hippy Commune"
My day job is to post jokes, but I got in so much debt that I cant even afford my electricity bills. it is the darkest times of my life!!!
Don't give up on your dream
YOU'RE BROKE?! I've got a hamburger on layaway at Burger King....
Ken Fulton {Baby Elder} How shocking!
This is why you're doing so bad. You give them away for free! 🤣
Very droll.
Anthony Trollope eventually was a very successful novelist, but for years worked in the British postal system - supposedly inventing the mail box. You could also include Conan Doyle, again eventually a successful and famous writer, but was a doctor for years. Also Gerald Manley Hopkins, a Jesuit Priest who proved to be a major poet (but was not famous until after his death).
Jeff Bloomfield Thank you for bringing up Anthony Trollope!
Dear Simon,
Could you do a Biographic about the woman photographer mentioned in this film?
She would be a fascinating subject.
Thank you for your consideration of this idea.
Best wishes,
Dianna
Interesting stuff
Awesome
I was not at all expecting to see Don Dohler on this list. He was one of the best b-movie auteurs to ever live.
i love sixto;s music, great guitar player
Simon Whistler's boring day job? He's a barrista
Sixto "Sugar Man" Rodriguez was awarded with a Doctor of Humane Letters from Wayne State University in 2013 (he apparently has a philosophy degree from 1981). I was there in the front row amongst my peers awaiting the ceremony to get my Masters in fine arts degree. It was a monumental and emotional moment. You could see he was visibly moved. He used the moment to address us graduates and encourage us to follow our passions. It's an experience I will never forget.
I played a guess who game with my phone yesterday. I wad thinking of Simon. It figured it out but I had to turn off my parental lock before it would tell me LOL. I love this channel.
I love you. But I've never heard anyone pronounce Chinaski as, Chin sicky. lol stop.
I really hope they do a top 10 list of names Simon has mispronounced.
I find this inspiring.
Yes! I know many talented artists and tell them , don't quit your day job, or your art.
Thank you very much - impressive! And you seem to be having started looking a little bit tired, bored, exhausted, disgusted and depressed because of an overdose of your daily presentation job. But you made up with the time and ended in the usual spirits. Our first thought was maybe he should have some time off for a vacation. We would not like to loose him here soon, he is precious. But anyway, thank you for your service!
The Anvil documentary is amazing.
Great list, but no Kafka?
Please do more excerpts exactly like this. It is the human condition, at its very best, and at its very worst, that bring us here. As tour guides go...I find you knowledgeable, and easy to understand. BTW you seem like a relatively normal person. Just when I thought there were none left.
Many well known authors and musicians have had to hold day jobs and sleep on friends' couches, some still do.
some of em need to get their own place :)
Some? I'd say most, since most art is underground
Surprised you didn’t include Henri Rousseau, the post-impressionist painter who worked as a customs official and because of that is often referred to as Le Douanier Rousseau.
Bukowski's pseudonim and alter ego was Henry CHINASKI.
Where's L.S. Lowry?
Yeah, that's pretty much the norm.
Mediocre, dull or even boring jobs lets ones mind roam free, might even be a catalyst for creativity.
Einstein developed the papers published in his 'miracle year' of 1905 while working as a patent clerk. This included the development of special relativity.
My job is to look for a job
please do another one and add Alice Neel
Did somebody mention Chinaski? Charles Bukowski wrote some classic works while he worked in the US Post Office. He wrote a book about it which I bought recently but haven't found time to read.
5:50 Pulp was published in 1994 not 2004
3:51 - I thought you were about to tell us that the drummer blew up!
Shoutout
There’s also a brilliant writer in Australia called Gerald Murnane. He would fit well on this list.
There's quite a few people they could you a biographic on.
There should be more mecenas around the globe. In the meantime let us mantain our day jobs.
Maybe one day. We will be recognized as artists 😂
Awww!!! I see a wedding ring....figures.
You should check out movies made by Winterstate Entertainment. Their movies are amazing 🙂
And L.S. Lowry was a rent collector.....
Surely Maud Lewis deserves a mention. The Canadian folk artist lived in poverty helping her husband peddle fish door-to-door. Mostof her artwork was sold for a few dollars or less.
Considered one of the best pagan musicians of all time, Gwydion Pendderwen worked a low-level job at the IRS between releasing his two LPs. (Approx. 1976-1981.) Sadly, Gwydion died in a car accident in 1982.
You didn't include Clive Cussler? You're kidding. He started his writing career for something to do while his wife was working the night shift. His stories were just offshoots of the adventure stories he told his kids at bed time. He says he still writes what people tell him they would like as a fun scenario.
I teach art and get paid for it!
Many feel that the food service industry is a boring dead end job. Dead end? Quite often. Boring? Not at all! Why just this evening we had an angry customer throwing her order at our drive thru cashier because something was made wrong.
👍
fyi the cashier isn't the one who made your food, but they often incur the wrath.👎
Chi - nah - skee
Speaking of anvils , where do all those come from that falls on those cartoon characters ? Who carries and anvil and thinks to themselves , "oh I'm going to drop this thing on some ones head !"
This list is pretty Kafkaesque, isn’t it.
No mention of Hunter S Thompson?
well, I guess I'll keep making art then.
Chi - na - ski. Henry Chinaski.
Samuel Morse was a painter and an inventor (the modern telegraph), He never had a boring job.
YOOOO
T.S Eliot. Banker
Let's see if Joseph Cornell is on the list....Nope. Too bad. He was a wonderful artist who made "assemblages" of collage, shadow boxes, and boxed items, plus collaborated on several movies. He spent most of his life working at small sales jobs (difficult since he was so shy), in a plant nursery, and designing textiles. And his main job was looking after his brother who had cerebral palsy. Try googling his images, you might like them.
what about Joe Cocker?
I adore bukowski
TOO MANY ADS! don’t get greedy
#1: Justin Y commenter.
It's Henry Chinaski not Henry Chin - Sicky !!!!! In 2004???? Bukowski died in 1994 !!!!!
Basically 99% of artists? Art is a hobbie, not a job
With a sufficient UBI, those who wanted to pursue art full-time would be freed to do so; and society would benefit.
who ?
Bukowski used the name Henry Chinaski, not Henry Chinsiki!! Please do your research, especially pronouncing names correctly!!
Sadly the guy that made the documentary about Sixto Rodrigues, Malik Bendjelloul committed suicide.
I am a award-winning artist published poet had my artwork in a national magazine I’ve never left the country barley been off the East Coast of the United States and I Work a normal barley above minimum wage job im trying to write a cook book
There's hope for us Boomers yet!
Bukowski used the name Henry Chinaski, not Henry Chinsiki
Not a word on Spinal Tap? Rubbish.
You are a rapid fire machine gun talker. SLOW DOWN. Please. Many who listen to you are not native speakers of English.
