      If you live somewhere that does authentic dim sum, they have something similar. Green bell pepper and eggplant stuffed with fish and pan fried. It's topped with a savory black bean sauce. It's delicious.

    Shinichi, what a great food tour! All of the food looks so scrumptious! I have had the steamed sugar cake; we can get it here also, and it is very nice. The texture is so interesting! I want to try clay pot rice one day. We have restaurants that serve it here. Thanks to Laurence for being in the video and showing you such great places to eat in Hong Kong! Have a great weekend, everyone! 😊

    What a feast! I'm so glad that you had a great time in Hong Kong. Pak tong koh was one of my Lola's (my Grandma who lived to be nearly 106) favorite snacks from any Asian bakery. It is tricky to make at home, but so worth it when it turns out well =) Cheers from Michigan💗

    by the way, in Mandarin, the burnt and sakutto rice at the bottom of the clay pot is called 'guo bao' not sure what it is in Cantonese.

    I miss Hong Kong! Thank you for this! Laurence (Lawrence?) speaks Cantonese and that makes me happy because that's what I speak! Looks like you had a lot of fun!
    It's unfortunate that people are attacking you about eating imitation shark fin soup, despite clearly specifying, many times, in the video that you are. Don't mind them. :) Thank you again for this video! You're very lucky that you get to travel and eat. :) So many people wish they have that kind of opportunity.

    wohoo part 2, I'm so happy to watch it it's soooo incredible interesting. the only thing is when it comes down to shark fin soup, I can't forget images from sharks wit cut off fins on the ground, still alive because they throw them back without killing them. but I'm not here to judge it's just stuck in my mind sorry. ohh and beside of that, the street food looks so delicious and exciting, such a complete different world comparing to where I life, just love how you can spend hours there walking and looking around and eating. thank you and Laurence so much for this amazing video ^^/

    • @Ladyzwolf
      @Ladyzwolf 7 років тому +1

      Plejade he said and write down that it was a FAKE shark fin soup, more than once. That's why it was cheap (Lawrence talked about the price comparison too). Probably next time pay attention to the video carefully before you throw any comments? :D

    • @darianroscoe1017
      @darianroscoe1017 7 років тому +1

      Plejade, as you said you were happy to watch it, I know you are aware this is imitation shark fin soup. I don't understand why, if they re going to take the fin, why not harvest the whole fish? Shark is delicious.

    • @plejade4125
      @plejade4125 7 років тому

      jahjahjah I know I know, but I did mean it in general. I know he talked specially about how it tastes like real, but isn't, even the texture was like real, I don't mean my commentary to this special episode I'm so sorry that it was so unclear. English isn't my native language i thought "when it comes down to" means everytime I hear or read about it in general, but not specially like in this video I see it, sorry. But anyway I'm not here to judge a kultural thing but I have to say, like you Darian Rose, it woul be much more efficient if they woul use the whole shark, never taste it but I can imagine it tastes good. I meat at least it is a animal like cow or pig you kill anyway, so why not using the whole I mean there is a lot of flesh people can eat from. I hope now it's more clear? and thanks for pointing this out I really appreciate this ^^

      darian roscoe It's only the fin that Chinese consumers pay well for. So now, many species of shark are endangered from over-fishing thanks to the shark fin trade.

    • @plejade4125

      Mindy's Mom Hi Mindy's Mom! 😃 it may be less than ideal to have a Cherry Blossom Festival in the store parking lot, but I think it would still be fun! We have a Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco's Japantown every spring. One of these years I want to go! 🌸

      It’s actually yeast that gives it that sour flavor, not vinegar. The yeast ferments the batter before baking to give it that distinctive honeycomb pattern and sourness. If you’ve ever had sweet rice wine, it’s a bit like that.

Hey both of you guys I was told that people in Japan and China would call me fat to my face even though I'm not but I am a woman with broad shoulders and I am very tall. My fiance is Chinese and lives there still because I want to move there but not until my mother passes away. He lives in dongguan City though where it is hot all year round. I would rather live in x i a n where it gets cold in the winter. If Lawrence has any advice or either of you have any advice please let me know I am open to advice always! He tells me to eat more Donuts because he wants me to be heavier! I can't afford a plane ticket right now to China but he said he would give me the money when I got there because in China you can't send the money out of the country. Is that true? I have known him for 8 years and have never known him to lie.

    I love reading all the self-righteous comments freaking out about shark fin soup when they are eating the FAKE version. Keep commenting while you eat your 32 oz factory raised steak, and typing on your mobile phone made by Chinese wage slaves.
    Let's be clear, I'm not promoting the eating of shark fins, the opposite actually. it's a cruel trade. But they're not eating or promoting the real stuff.

    • @fasteddie9970
      @fasteddie9970 7 років тому +2

      True, we are all guilty of benefitting from some form of exploitation or taking advantage of a convenience with dubious origins. What I and others objected to is not that they ate fake shark fin soup but the manner in which they discussed it in comparison to the real thing. It might have been an opportunity to decry the consumption of shark fin as it is a heinous, archaic act to cut off the fin and leave the shark for dead. With a popular UA-cam channel comes some responsibility to encourage others to be better stewards of our planet.

    • @fastbuckwu
      @fastbuckwu 7 років тому +5

      Sure, they could they use their channel to talk about the environmental impact of the food they are eating. But honestly, they are under no obligation to do so. It's their channel about travel and food. That's why we all subbed, i'm assuming, because we are interested in their food and travel reviews. If they started preaching about how all the food they're eating is bad for the environment, then they'd appeal to less people.
      At the end of the day, in my opinion, you're expecting too much from UA-cam entertainers. We don't even get pissed off when our politicians lie through their teeth to us but you want a pair of UA-camrs to publicly denounce shark fin soup.
      I for one didn't even know that there was a "fake" version of shark fin soup. And now that I know, i'm more inclined to try it. So maybe they did some good afterall.
      Anyway, cheers for a polite discussion. Have a great day :)

      purberri Shinichi comments about how it tastes like real shark fin. I don't know why he'd make that comment unless he'd eaten it personally. I do see a difference between my occasional eating of ethically slaughtered cattle, and someone eating the fin off of an endangered species, where the rest of the shark was kicked back into the sea. I don't eat any endangered species, fish, shark or mammal. I don't use rhino horn. I also don't approve of dog pit fights, which were also once part of my culture. Nor of invading other people's countries and subjugation of the inhabitants, which was also part of my culture once, and in fact was kinda how Hong Kong was conceived currently. Just because it's a cultural norm doesn't make it sacred. I disapprove of child marriage, female genital mutilation and eating shark fin. I'm not going to bust up someone's marriage ceremony to stop any of those three practices happening, but I still disapprove of all three.

    • @tarterie
      @tarterie 7 років тому +2

      It's just used to make a cone shape of the waffle. Once it slightly cools it stays in that shape better. All egg waffle places use some sort of tool to hang the egg waffle to keep it in that shape. If you think that's gross, you clearly haven't been to the night markets in south or east asia such as thailand, vietnam etc. Especially less developed countries. Fake shark fin soup looks like hot and sour soup because that's the way it is. They're both thickened the same way and have similar ingredients besides the shark fin.

      @shannonrichmond1257 7 років тому

      James W You seem to have completely missed her point. If "veggies" were an endangered item then yes, it would be the same thing. But veggies (tofu or whatever veggie burgers are made of) are not in danger of bwcoming extinct. They don't have a huge, vital part of their body cut off while they're alive & then left to suffer & die.

    Guys! You should never eat shark fin soup. Didn't you know that they cut the fins off the sharks while they are alive and leave them to founder in the sea and starve to death because they can no longer swim? I stopped watching the video as soon as you described the soup. I love you guys, but this is just wrong.
