Thanks so much for this video. I JUST found my original Xbox the other day after thinking it had been thrown out by mistake. It’s in MINT condition. It was a 2005 model and still plays games just as well as it did 16 years ago. Very underrated system and holds up very well today. One of my favorite consoles for sure. SSX Tricky, Crimson Skies, PGR 2 and Jet Set Radio Future have all had some screen time this week! Keep up the good work buddy!

Haven't watched the full vid yet but there is a way to soft mod it without opening the box up. You have buy an original copy of Splinter Cell and do something with that, don't know off the top of my head.
SSX are a good game. One of the few sports games that I like. Except for racing, if you can call that sports games. Personally I like fighting games better than other genre. Dead Or Alive 2 and 5 are my absolute favorites. DOA 3 and 4 are not as good.
Important bit regarding the clock capacitor: you DO NOT need to remove the cap from 1.6 models, manufactured mostly in 2004 and late 2005. Doing so with this model will damage your system!
@91 tech will you do a iPhone 4s 10 years later, what if it was a video like the 4 last year so 20 min but it’s just where you just said how slow it was 😂

As ist a "prototype" for New generation of DirectX. And the Green Xbox color came from NVIDIA GREEN that powered the console with a prototype Gpu. Fun fact XBOX directX9 is based on Xbox, so Xbox is a prototype por the 2004 graphics.
This was a crazy era for gaming. Loved the old school commercials brought back memories, now I’m in my mid 30s. I was never into the original Xbox, but my friends had them we used to link up multiple TVs to play halo, than halo 2 dropped was like 🤯 Xbox did pave the way for online gaming I have to give it to them. Both Sony and Ms can learn from each other.
"Online console gaming". Online gaming was popular on PC long before console. Oh, and the Dreamcast could play online too. The original Xbox is in many ways the spiritual successor of the Dreamcast.
I got one of these day 1. Time goes by so fast. I feel like it was just yesterday. I actually remember the events that day leading up to when I got the Xbox.
When you mentioned the guide to remove the clock capacitor I already knew it was the one by MattKC. Also fun fact about the intro: Hyperkin turned the giant Xbox logo on the new Duke into a screen that shows the console's intro. They really struggled to find the video file in the firmware only to find out it's rendered in real-time.
My fiancee' got me the OG xbox for Christmas in 2019, and the first games I got for it were Halo CE & 2 (The box for Halo 2 I got is an alternate one too actually, it had the Arbiter instead of Chief) Whenever I switch back and forth between the original games and MCC, it feels like it's much harder to see in the levels, even when it's daylight. Maybe it got brightened up in the PC ports? Anyway, I got a bunch of other games I had for ps2 back in the day too. Like Tony Hawk's Underground 1/2, Burnout 3, and Test Drive: Off Road, Wide Open. (Which I wasn't able to play. It kept reading it as a DVD for some reason)
When I was about 7 or 8, my friend's older sister had the original Xbox and sometimes, we were allowed to play on it. I don't remember it too much, but I remember playing kids games like nemo on it!
Also Sega's Dreamcast was not the first to have online capabilities, it was actually the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and they had a service as well as Xband.
I have lots of good memories playing Xbox back in high school and college. I have an Xbox, PS2, and GameCube hooked up to an old CRT and love revisiting that generation. I never got a 360 or Xbox One but decided to get an XSX recently. Feels good to be playing Xbox again. Thanks for the video!
Still had one like 6 months ago, with Fifa 04 and other old games… but suddenly it stopped working and started to be in a startup loop, with some buttons doing what some others should do… nobody never knew what happened to it, and it went to trash… I kept the controller and the DVD remote, but I’m sooo sad !
Love retrospective of the og xbox, it was the one console i wanted that i never got as a kid. I had a ps2 but wanted the xbox, it had the look, the controllers felt right, the graphics looked better, the game cases looked better, my God even the black and green colors complimented each other. A few years back i finally got my hands on the og xbox and still fire it up to play what i missed out on as a kid.
I plugged my xbox in yesterday to play some....FORZA MOTORSPORT (my favourite game from back in the day). It has not aged a day. The 60fps, clear graphics, amazing car selection, and the most incredible mod-upgrade system. I easily plugged 2 hours in, and will definitely leave it hooked up to my TV for some more. I've heard good things about FM2, so I'll grab that from ebay.
"It good to play together" That slogan was waaaaay ahead of its time 👍playing single player games was my main preference back then but now I play online exclusively and its hard to play any other way.
Another brilliant video, thank you. I got my Xbox at launch. It came with Halo. But I found it so frustrating. It was the first time I used ‘twin sticks’ with a first person shooter. I’m glad I persevered, for obvious reasons. I also remember, you had to buy the media remote to play DVD’s. or the wouldn’t play. I think the buttons glowed in the dark too.
I came to the party a little later but I started gaming on OG XBL around May of 05. Being a twelve at the time, I was one of the few kids in my school with it. Once the 360 came out, everybody was onboard though. It kind of blows my mind that I witnessed the shift.
I still have my original Xbox since Christmas of 2002 and still play it. My favorite game on Xbox (and also my favorite game of all time) is Jet Set Radio Future. I got it for free. It came with it along with Sega GT. I also had fun playing Blinx, Fuzion Frenzy, and Splinter Cell.
I still have the original and hard modded. I still enjoy play it and us it as a Retro player to play older console games. I have the xbox to HDMI adapter and what a game changer.
4 months late, but I had an OG Xbox. My favorite game on it wasn't Halo or Halo 2 though. It was the Chronicles of Riddick game. (If memory serves, Escape from Butcher Bay or something like that).
I still have my oXBOX from back in the day, connected. My second one as the one I got at launch eventually died. Have the most magical memories of Halo CE. Ironically, I wasn't actually interested in it because console FPS' had never been that great so I wasn't buying into the hype. All I cared about was DOA3. The only reason I ended up buying it was that back then retailers would do this bundling thing, forcing to to buy three games with the console during the launch scarcity. So I ended up getting Halo and Abe's Odyssey. Halo sat in the shelf for a couple of weeks as I was just playing DOA3. Then when I finally got to it I was blown away. Brought my wife in "you have to play this with me". And we did. That first Halo CE run is a magical, treasured memory of our early marriage for the both of us.
I have three XBox consoles. I have the original launch XBox that is now retired, and one that is currently modded. I bought a third XBox in late 2004 that is currently in used. Call me crazy, but I bought the Steel Battalion game with the massive controller as well.
I bought it when it first came out. Loved playing Halo with a friend in co-op mode. I loved NFL 2K5 the most of all the games, but I played the heck out of my system. It deployed with me and made for some great memories in multiplayer.
It was 2002, I was 32 & I had no intention of buying another games console. I owned several older consoles & computers but I honestly hadn't even thought about gaming for years. Then, I was watching TV, when an ad came on for a new game - Splinter Cell - on the Xbox, I was stunned at how good it looked. So, on my next day off from work, I bought an XBox bundled with Splinter Cell, & everything was fantastic. A couple of years later, I was talking to a work colleague about Splinter Cell, & we disagreed about how good the game was. He was coming at it from his PS2 perspective, having never seen it on the XBox - so I drove over to his house on our day off and placed my copy into his newly purchased XBox - he was blown away by it. Then he showed me his PS2 version, & I realised why we had both initially disagreed on how good the game was, because on the PS2 it looked awful. Great console. I'm now going to pull out that pesky capacitor.
If GTA iii, Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City Stories, and Vice City Stories hadn’t first been released on the PS2 (not including the prequel/prequel stories) more than likely I would’ve purchased an Xbox. And more then likely I would’ve been a Halo fanatic in the process. Still, hats off to Microsoft with the first Xbox brand for revolutionizing and improving the games industry for the better in my opinion. This coming from a Sony guy.
The Xbox and halo 1&2 were my childhood on the weekends my cousins and friends would come over and we'd play 4 player co op multiplayer all night long such good memories
Fun fact: didn't outsold PS2, but it definitely outsold the Nintendo GameCube, is the ONLY 6th Gen console that do DLCs and internet stuff in video game console, and is the most powerful 6th Gen console.
I'm not sure if this qualifies as DLC but on the PS2 you could technically unlock extra content in some games. I own 2 games that did this, Crash Tag Team Racing and WWE SVR 2006. If you owned the game on PSP and PS2 and connected them through USB, you could unlock extra content for both versions. I believe more games did this but I only ever owned 2 with this feature. Though I'm glad this didn't become a trend because not only you needed 2 consoles to do this, you had to buy the same game twice. Xbox had the right approach for this.
@@Manic_Panic , Outrun 2006: Coast2Coast on PS2 also had unlocked content via the PSP. Also, possibly as many as a couple or a few of the PS2 SOCOM titles had ~DLC / updates online and I forget others.... Oh yeah, Tony Hawk Underground had a [face uploader] that allowed you to upload your face or another image onto the wireframe of an avatar. www.ign.com/articles/2003/10/09/tony-hawk-face-scan?amp=1
fun fact: it's called the xbox because it runs a version of the windows kernel and windows' game software, directX so when they needed a codename for the device they called it the direct x box, then decided for a codename that was too long so they shortened it to X box, when it came time to come up with the actual name of the product they just kept it to xbox
Thankfully I had some good luck finding a working Original Xbox console. I found one at a local charity shop one day, and while it was lacking controllers, it still had its power and AV cables. And for $8AU, it was a good deal. I tested it out after purchasing it, and it worked perfectly.
Orta is a masterpiece. The graphics are still really impressive; and if you haven't played it upscaled on a series x, then you are missing something amazing to behold. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
I use my original Xbox with the same 1702 monitor. The inputs on the back are actually s-video from before the port was standardized. I have about 10 other consoles all hooked up with an s-video input switch, it's great!
The original Xbox is a fantastic console. I got mine on Christmas Day 2004 and I really love it. I have many games for it as of November 2021 like MechAssault 1 and 2, Project Gotham Racing 1 and 2, WWE RAW 2, Splinter Cell trilogy, Ghost Recon, Full Spectrum Warrior, ESPN NFL 2K5, NFL Street 2, Counter-Strike, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Rainbow Six 3, Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions, Deathrow, Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive Ultimate, Max Payne duology, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, and many, many more. The best part about the console is you can add your own custom soundtracks into selected Xbox titles with custom soundtrack support, which I did starting with WWE RAW 2 back in 2005 after getting WWE Anthology.
Absolute favorite console, I've repaired and modded so many. If you want to get into emulation, this is the console to start on. Best games? Halo 2, Kotor, Destroy all Humans, Psychonauts, the list goes on.
Agreed, playing on a modern powerful PC makes the games feel like how I remember them looking as a kid, and honestly even the original versions on the console *Still look pretty decent today*
IGN’s opinion means zero to me. The Duke controller is awesome and it was designed after the Sega Dreamcast controller, which makes it even more awesome. There is a reason, to this day, sega games feel better on xbox instead of playstation and Nintendo. The controller just feels like a continuation/evolution of the Sega Dreamcast. I have 2 hyperkin Duke controllers for my Series X, i use it to play my b.c OG Xbox games.
I own the Cystal special edition xbox, and i can say, with those stupid shields removed, this Crystal xbox looks insane on the outside! You get imac g3 vibes because you can look into the console! Eventually i would like to put some lights in the xbox, nothing fancy, just an led that cycles through colors on the front somewhere :)
I have and still love my original Xbox. So many fantastic games to play on that system. My only problem is that I've somehow had pretty terrible luck keeping mine in working order. I currently have 3 of them though I've owned at least five to date. The first has a FRAG condition due to a failed hard drive and is completely dead so it became a parts console, another has blown voltage capacitors so it doesn't power on and off properly, the third had a disc drive that committed harakiri, the fourth is a working spare that a friend gave me and my current one is in perfectly working order... that is, after frankensteining all the good parts from consoles one and three together just to get one working console as well as replacing the drive belt for the disc drive. My voltage capacitor princess is currently waiting for repair and will act as spare #2. Xbox's are typically very sturdy and reliable so I must be a magnet for bad ones lol.
Nice video, man! I love the original Xbox. One small note, the controller you have is just a crystal green one. The Halo green controller that matches the Halo Edition Xbox has a “Halo” logo badge rather than the “Xbox” badge.
The Xbox was awesome. I always saw it as a Dreamcast with alot more money behind it. My favorite game for the console is Panzer Dragoon Orta. Now I play it on my X-Bone with backward compatibility.
Wow this warms my heart. I remember my late father had a GF that saw me looking at a flyer with the xbox and she asked if I wanted it and of course I say yes. I wait for months and months and still nothing. To a 10 year old thats long. I believe what happened according to my older sister is he went out and bought it and then said it was from her. He was a good guy. Turns out I couldn't play it right away because my tv was too old lol
It's important to note you don't need one of those HDMI adapters to get HD support. If you have a set of component cables the Xbox will natively support 480p 720p and 1080i. And of course 480i if you're using a CRT with component input. The hardware also wasn't that obscure as it was essentially an Intel Pentium 3 with less cash so it's been argued it's closer to a Celeron along with 64 MB of RAM and what is essentially G-Force 3 graphics
Actually is a Geforce 4 ti prototype equal to 4200, and the Cpu is a Mobile Pentium III not a desktop celeron, and was planned to reach 1ghz but Intel refused. The original Cpu was an AMD Athlon runing way faster but very hot, so they changed to 1ghz P3 mobile but Intel tricked MS on Last moments and made it 733 for stability reasons... Líes it run OK at 1ghz.
Xbox was named Xbox because it's Direct X in a box. They shortened the name to the Xbox for obvious reasons and designed the chassis to make sure no one would have any doubts lol. I'm betting you know all this already, but has to be said.
Got my OG Xbox as a surprise gift from my Ex g/f in 2002. I no longer have her but I still have the console. One of the greatest consoles of them all. Happy 20th and onto the next 20.
Good retrospective. This machine is fantastic after you've hacked it and dropped in a 160GB hard drive. If you don't have a Raspberry Pi or an old computer running Batocera, it's probably the best way to play emulators on a dedicated system. By the way, where native games are concerned, I'm fond of the fighters, particularly Capcom vs. SNK 2, Dead or Alive 3, Bloody Roar Extreme, and Wild Rings (JPN).
Emulation of the original XBOX made some huge steps in the last months. You can play games like Blood Wake or Crimson in 4k resolutions without major problems on cxbx or xemu and they look awesome!
I still have one to this very day, love to play Underground 1 & 2 on it, but the first i played was Most Wanted 2005, which is why i really got into NFS and other racing games such as Gran Turismo and Forza
Gotta call you out at 27:25. Those HDMI cables are pass through meaning if the game is outputting in 480i or 480p t will still output in 480 to your tv or monitor. The Xbox and some games do support 720 and 1080i so a game like ATV unleashed will natively output in 1080i. If you want those higher resolutions for all games you need an upscaler that will line double the image
PLEASE make a Gamecube one next!! I have searched and haven’t found one anyway, sorry if it does exist new subscriber (found you a month or two back when iPhone 14 launched, truly enjoy this channel!)
I had an original Xbox when I was really young, and now I got a Series X and love it, man Xbox has been amazing and I’m so glad everything went right (more or less) with the original console and we kept getting more consoles. I also removed the clock capacitor on my original Xbox (it was broken) and replaced it with a good working one and now I never get the message again 😄
Hope to help you realize that the caps under the heat sink the three 3300uF caps are bulged/leaked, highly recommend to replace them or get someone to do it
That Xbox ad was wild. Period. I got my first Xbox in 2002 and played the living h*ll out of Halo CE. Granted I was around 7 and the Flood scared the fluids out of me, but they were fun gaming times. I loved playing with my dad and best friend Jonathan. Great Video, Hockey Dude!
Thank You Finally someone on UA-cam Showing Xbox love on its birthday. All year there were Videos for Sony when it was their 20th last year for the PS2. This Year?? Nothing for the Xbox that I can find out of all of my subs. But this one. Thank you again.
Dreamcast had a network card upgrade avaliable. But it shipped with dial up. I also remember that Microsoft and Sony always had issues with their online service, for a couple of years. Launch of these services seemed like a beta test, and user were test subjects, waiting for Sony and MS to get finish the product. I waited to Ps3 before I played anything online on a console.
My grandpa got an Xbox for his birthday in the early 2000s he has the likes of Tom Clancy games crimson skies battlefront and halo 2 he has it hooked up to an old CRT and has 2 duke controllers every time we visit we play some battlefront it is very fun
I've recently picked up an original Xbox to fill out my collection with my 360E and 1S. I got it from cex with the first call of duty and need for speed most wanted it cost me £63. It doesn't need the copasitor taken out and it isn't anywhere near as powerful as some other consoles I own but it is impressive and it works really well
I got my Xbox on launch day. I was quite lucky to get one, as a guy had just come into EB Games (now GameStop) and cancelled his pre-order. It still works great 20 years later. I've been playing it a lot lately since I missed a ton of games from the 6th Generation. My favorite game is "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic."
I was a PlayStation guy. But years later when I got my Xbox I was amazed. The graphics were so clean and bright. Compared to the dark and moody lighting of most PS2 games. Plus no jaggies on Xbox games. Still love my PS2 gen games. But I love my XBOX games as well
Played Ninja Gaiden with my cousins and uncles back then. Also played COD: Finest Hour, Burnout 3 Takedown, Kakuto Chojin, Maximum Chase and L.A Rush just to name a few games that we really enjoyed
Best console dash ever. I have my modded XBox with the og dash and it's so cool. It's futuristic in all the good ways - unlike modern consoles that remind me of endless scrolling on Netflix. Also the Duke gets a lot of undeserved flack. I have small hands and even though the Duke looks huge it's actually pretty comfortable to use. My only gripe with it is the face buttons mentioned in the video. They're weirdly placed in a kinda slanted way, it makes it some times difficult to feel where your thumb is resting. All in all a great console. I bought it in it's first months of existence knowing that it'll be taking over some titles from my beloved but already dead Dreamcast. Playing Halo split screen with a friend we were floored by the graphics and gamepley. Project Gotham Racing was a highlight for me personally since I loved Metropolis Street Racer on the DC. It was the only game in the franchise that run at 60fps and it was glorious.
I remember having the Xbox Original and my cousin rip the 50 cent get rich or die tryin album on it and playing Project Gotham and hearing “What up Gangsta” and it still brings back early to mid 2000 memories for me. I will always love Xbox as it’s apart of my childhood and fun memories with my brothers.
TO BE PERFECTLY HONEST , I REALLY GET SUCH A GREAT FEELING GAMING . I AM A PLAYSTATION PERSON AND I THINK IT IS GREAT THAT GAMERS GET THOSE SAME FEELINGS WHEN THEY ARE ON THE CONSOLE OF THEIR CHOICE. GAMING HAS HELPED ME DEAL WITH DEPRESSION.
I remember getting the GameCube at launch. It was a fun machine but I had my eyes on Xbox. I ended up trading my GameCube in for the Xbox and first game I rented was Max Payne . Loved it! I ended up being a beta tester for Xbox live . Fun times

SSX are a good game. One of the few sports games that I like. Except for racing, if you can call that sports games. Personally I like fighting games better than other genre. Dead Or Alive 2 and 5 are my absolute favorites. DOA 3 and 4 are not as good.
@@hopeschannel 1.6 consoles have to have the clock capacitor
If you purchased the adapter and remote, you could watch DVDs. This was my first DVD player.
Important bit regarding the clock capacitor: you DO NOT need to remove the cap from 1.6 models, manufactured mostly in 2004 and late 2005. Doing so with this model will damage your system!
Thanks for the input. First time hearing of that.

My gosh, so many amazing memories. I'll never forgot playing Halo for the first time with my 2 best friends.

Installing your own music and being able to play it over certain games was insane. One of the coolest features ever on a console and it was on the OG.
My fiancee' got me the OG xbox for Christmas in 2019, and the first games I got for it were Halo CE & 2 (The box for Halo 2 I got is an alternate one too actually, it had the Arbiter instead of Chief)
Whenever I switch back and forth between the original games and MCC, it feels like it's much harder to see in the levels, even when it's daylight.

Might have been that clock capacitor issue he talked about
Love retrospective of the og xbox, it was the one console i wanted that i never got as a kid.
One thing you forgot is the creepy nasa noise from the xbox
"It good to play together"
That slogan was waaaaay ahead of its time 👍playing single player games was my main preference back then but now I play online exclusively and its hard to play any other way.
Even cooperative games like Halo.
My 6th generation memories come from this console, my dad bought this for Halo, and ever since then, I’ve been an Xbox fanboy.
Jet Set Radio is one of the best games ever made
I still have the original and hard modded.
Although I was a Sony fanboy, the original XBOX was still a well-beloved piece of hardware for me, and it's the only XBOX I've owned since.
God! I can't believe it's been 20 years since I bought my first gen Xbox. Happy times, great memories
@@Manic_Panic ,
Outrun 2006: Coast2Coast on PS2 also had unlocked content via the PSP.
Aw man seeing those old commercials brought back a flood of memories :)
Thankfully I had some good luck finding a working Original Xbox console. I found one at a local charity shop one day, and while it was lacking controllers, it still had its power and AV cables. And for $8AU, it was a good deal. I tested it out after purchasing it, and it worked perfectly.
Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams was my fav. I was also a huge fan of all the Sega stuff like Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Shenmue 2.
Just found an Xbox 360 at a garage sale the other day. It works great! And the cool thing is. IT WAS ONLY $10!!
Absolute favorite console, I've repaired and modded so many. If you want to get into emulation, this is the console to start on. Best games? Halo 2, Kotor, Destroy all Humans, Psychonauts, the list goes on.
I remember playing Halo with my friend at the time, too.
It`s a huge masterpiece, and the Master Chief Collection is a great deal!
The duke controller? That’s that big one right? I loved that controller to for some reason!!!
I still fire my OG Xbox up from time to time to play NFL Street 2. Such a phenomenal classic.
Awesome video man, soon were gonna see the ps3 and xbox 360 in the same way
Nice video, man!

Launch of these services seemed like a beta test, and user were test subjects, waiting for Sony and MS to get finish the product. I waited to Ps3 before I played anything online on a console.

It doesn't need the copasitor taken out and it isn't anywhere near as powerful as some other consoles I own but it is impressive and it works really well
Jet Set Radio Future Is one of my favourite games of all time and has a soundtrack that I still listen to all the time.
Thats my favorite game of all time
Halo 1, Slayer Pro on Hang 'Em High was always the starting point on game nights with the homies.
PS2 had more games but Xbox ran 3rd party games way better. I had both back in the day. Good times man
The Xbox was so powerful for its time so multi platform games looked and ran better usually.
This is my favorite console of all time man. so many fun memories with this thing
Fun times
That's super cool, beta tested a piece of history. I'd love to hear what that was like/what Xbox Live in general was like then.
The final PS2 game was PES 2014, not FIFA 14 😊
Great video for a great machine btw
