Love the talk about what kids like and their colors. Recently gave my 7 year old sister a bunch of my older figures and a new Cyberverse Arcee. Even with the Arcee there, bright pink and female, she immediately went for the Dinobots. She liked the POTP figures just fine, because they're simple, but do you know what she really went for? The AOE Dinobots, in all their candy-colored glory.
I do kind of love that. As goofy as those designs are and the garish colors that they have, there is something to say about how kids just like certain colors without needing to justify it.
These have been an absolute joy. Was just shy of 12 years old when armada started, and while i had always enjoyed Transformers via a G1 vhs tape i inherited and through watching beast wars/machines into RiD, nothing, NOTHING was quite like that first hit of Armada. And is probably the main reason why i'm still sitting here 20 years later obsessing, Armada ignited my passion something fierce. And can i just say as a kid with very little in the way of pocket money to freely spend outside of christmases and birthdays, the minicon price point was a godsend. Cannot wait to hear more stories from Mr Archers time on the brand, Energon was a very interesting time as a fan.
Armada marked the end of Transformers that I have childhood nostalgia for. I've enjoyed plenty of the media since then, but G2 (practically G1)-Armada will always hold a special place for me.
These interviews and breakdowns are absolutely fantastic. It's so interesting to see how things came together and how Mr. Archer's career grew and changed with many brands (Transformers being my love). Again, bravo!
I am one of those kids that was 7 at the time of Armada. My first transformer series and my favorite. It's exciting to hear how my favorite toys from my childhood were made. Thanks Aaron and Proto man! Please do a podcast on energon next!
Listening to this while building my Lego Optimus Prime. Good time. I'd also say, I am one of those "was 5 and now is 25". I never had Armada toys as a kid, still havent managed to pick any up. But I love the cartoon and comic.
Wow...I had no idea Laserbeak was orange due to toy safety laws. Interesting. I actually thought he was an interesting toy, and I just chalked the color up to it being a new toy line. And Unicron was just a solid toy. I had him and a ton of other Armada stuff back in the day...wish I still had a lot of them!
Very enlightening discussion, I really enjoyed getting a full history of some of my childhood toys free from any brand secrecy. Armada always gave me the impression of being one of the more 'auteristic' toy lines so its interesting to hear just how much freedom Aaron had compared to nowadays.
I remember those McDonald's toys, think they only brought 4 of them out in the UK Starscream, Cyclonus, Optimus and Red Alert. I'm one of those people who grew up with Armada, well RID and a bit earlier but Armada was the line
Great episode guys. It was awesome to hear more about what was going on behind the curtain, during Armada/Micron Legend's development. It's a shame that the Beast Wars Neo Unicron never saw the light of day, even as a collector graded figure. I wonder if that mold sill exists, and if there's a chance that Takara might release it one day.
@@TheToyArmadawithAaronArcher Awesome. Even spilt into 2 parts at an hour each of gives us a bird's eye view of Armada. I definitely want more! Really hope you do an Alternators/Binaltech episode soon too :)
It’s so amazing to listen to this now as an adult who grew up with Armada as my first Transformers toys/cartoon! Such great memories. Two things that I’ve always wondered, was Hoist always planned to be an upgraded version of Smokescreen? And how did the process go of incorporating the Transmetals into the tail end of the line?
This was such an awesome show & you deserve way more views. I really enjoy these exclusive 'peak behind the curtains'! And my problem w/ Kicker (& other characters) seemed likes jerks & were inconsistent. (And yes I watched the American version.) In some ways Armada was the best of the trilogy & in others Energon was better. But Tfs were back & in the light again! Will Car Robots 200o/ RID 2001 ever be covered? No rush, just wondering.
I've always wondered where that G1 Takara Unicron prototype ended up. I'd like to think that it's safely tucked away in a vault somewhere, but since the only images we've ever seen of it were those old grainy photos (presumably taken in the late 80s), I've got a bad feeling that it was probably lost or destroyed sometime after it was cancelled. Has Takara ever indicated if wether or not they still have it?
not sure if these kind of questions could be answered by Mr Archer but I'll ask em anyway how much of the unicron trilogy was inspired by the Brave Series and other Takara works and how much of it was intentional and how much might've been coincidence like say minicon panels in Armada being basically the Brave Stones in Da Garn, green panels that contain robotic life forms though in Da Garn's case they had to possess vehicles to convert them into their bodies or heck even toy design seemed referential at times like Omega Supreme being a symmetrical docker or Leobreaker totally not being Goldymarg and Galeon put together how much of Energon was planned by the end of Armada especially with the planet seen in the end with Unicron floating by Was Energon particularly hard to plan for since it seemed like there was a lot of behind the scenes flip flopping while mostly on the anime side did that ever bleed into the toy side how much of the whole trilogy was planned over time like when was Cybertron an inkling in the minds of the developers same with Energon... also like what's the story behind Cybertron's story in japan being disconnected from Energon despite many elements of the story seeming like they ask you to remember events in energon... or at least remember them and have stuff elaborated a bit how were all the gimmicks decided like energon stars and cyber keys what is the reason for the change in studios to Gonzo for cybertron... though I can personally imagine why seeing their prior CG work but an explanation from someone who may know might be better is there a reason why this kind of partnership seems like it won't ever happen again? mostly asking to wonder if a full on japanese written TF show could be done again since all the ones that happen and taking the Brave Series into account being the replacement for transformers for a good long time had very interesting takes on the conflict, I would love to see it happen again... maybe get David Kaye and Garry Chalk again as part of this pipe dream wish, those 2 together seem always be in the TF media I love the most

How have I been missing this for so long? It's like a BotCon panel.

46:00 Megatron! One of his sound effects is the AT-AT firing sound. I always thought it sounded exactly like it and would treat it as such :D

Back with Conrad and Bruce on Something to Play With. I love this show!
Can I thank you for saying 'Lego Bricks' and not 'Legos'.

Damn Daniel!
Back at it again with the white vanz.... errr yellow car.
Bought the animated Game on day 1. I really enjoyed it.
This is such an amazing podcast tysm!!!

I would REALLY like to see a book written about the whole, intricate details of your career at Hasbro. That would be super cool.
thanks, for now I plan to get into the intricate creative details on these podcasts.

This was great!!!!
I don't dislike Kicker either xd
Another great episode! Thanks to both Protoman and Aaron in adding to the history of Transformers Armada.
I found me some old armada stickers at a card shop. Got me a hotshot sticker that is on altoids case
Yes! Callout to the DW comic!
Always wondered why we didn’t get any form of transformers-Go.

39:22 Know that I am Razorclaw, and know that I was the other purple thing that caused Tidalwave to be green!
Whose cat is meowing and purring in the background? Took me a bit to notice, as I thought it was my cat at first.

Hasbro has like 3 of them in the vaults.
One is on display in a museum in RI.
11:39 were you intentionally dressed as Jedis?
not sure if these kind of questions could be answered by Mr Archer but I'll ask em anyway
how much of the unicron trilogy was inspired by the Brave Series and other Takara works and how much of it was intentional and how much might've been coincidence like say minicon panels in Armada being basically the Brave Stones in Da Garn, green panels that contain robotic life forms though in Da Garn's case they had to possess vehicles to convert them into their bodies or heck even toy design seemed referential at times like Omega Supreme being a symmetrical docker or Leobreaker totally not being Goldymarg and Galeon put together
how much of Energon was planned by the end of Armada especially with the planet seen in the end with Unicron floating by
Was Energon particularly hard to plan for since it seemed like there was a lot of behind the scenes flip flopping while mostly on the anime side did that ever bleed into the toy side
how much of the whole trilogy was planned over time like when was Cybertron an inkling in the minds of the developers same with Energon... also like what's the story behind Cybertron's story in japan being disconnected from Energon despite many elements of the story seeming like they ask you to remember events in energon... or at least remember them and have stuff elaborated a bit
how were all the gimmicks decided like energon stars and cyber keys
what is the reason for the change in studios to Gonzo for cybertron... though I can personally imagine why seeing their prior CG work but an explanation from someone who may know might be better
is there a reason why this kind of partnership seems like it won't ever happen again? mostly asking to wonder if a full on japanese written TF show could be done again since all the ones that happen and taking the Brave Series into account being the replacement for transformers for a good long time had very interesting takes on the conflict, I would love to see it happen again... maybe get David Kaye and Garry Chalk again as part of this pipe dream wish, those 2 together seem always be in the TF media I love the most
I liked the idea of BTR, but kreo did it much better for transformers. I own one of the rare BTR Joe Patriot Grizzly’s
What are the respective definitions of shared mold and gang-molding?
Ok what's with the cat?
Feline intervention?
