      I agree, although he gets a couple details flubbed here and there. His work is incredible though. It's barely important if there's a few teeny details mixed up.
      Although, U6 is my favorite Ultima, so I feel like he was a bit hard on it, but I'm probably biased by nostalgia. I still play it once a year.

    • @brainwavestobinary

      Yeah, Ultima was such a huge part of my childhood - I still have vivid memories of a day when I went home sick as a young kid, driven home in the rain by my mom, having chicken soup for lunch, and then playing Ultima 3 while my mom played "oldies" on the radio. I am loving Majuular's retrospectives on these. Can't wait for Ultima 7's.

      @@brainwavestobinary can't wait for U7 either. If U7 had U6's battle system, it would be my favorite Ultima, and probably be my favorite game ever. As it is, I liked 6 better, but U7 is something special, no matter what. I understand why people consider it the best.

    • @brainwavestobinary
      @brainwavestobinary 3 місяці тому +2

      @@atmaweapon2803 U6 was great, glad it gets love! The jank that a lot of people criticize was easy for me to forgive because of how "new" so much of it was. Ultima was great for so long because with each new iteration, it added a lot of good, new things, technologically, while retaining what made the previous ones good or at least iconic, though I feel like Ultima 8 and 9 struggled.
      I have a lot of nostalgia wrapped up in the series, but I think I'm one of those for whom U7 was the favorite. I think it had the best implementation of the isometric perspective (and full screen viewport) versus U6 and U8, and did a lot of other things really well. I'm sure it also helps that U7/U7p2 were sources of comfort during a turbulent time in my younger life, too. I agree with you about combat, however - U6 was the last one where I found the combat to be the right combination of fun and tactical. U7 and later, spellcasting felt superfluous and combat was just clicking/target-selection without much strategy.
      I guess Ultima Underworld was another great, though I never completed it. I really didn't like that equipment would break, it added a level of challenge that I wasn't really into as a pre-teen. Although the accomplishment of making it through one floor of the Abyss down to the next always felt like a huge, celebration-worthy accomplishment.

    • @atmaweapon2803
      @atmaweapon2803 3 місяці тому +2

      @@brainwavestobinary the way I see it, U7 (and partially U6) was the series turning into an adventure game series, something along the lines of the Quest for Glory series~less stats and tactics, more puzzle solving and immersion. And I think that's why U7 is so fondly remembered. It's extremely immersive. They streamlined and removed anything that made the game immersion breaking~anything that felt "game-like" or like a traditional cRPG. It's more an experience than a simulation of one.

      In the spirit of the other commenter, I'll offer up Marsh + Grim Beard (& gently point to IFinishedAVideoGame's comment up top; he's a great longform video slinger).
      There are a bajillion "Marsh" on YT but this one specializes in the Japanese end of games near the same time frames Maj is looking at, like Shin Megame Tensei/Last Bible series. If you like Japanese games + light novels or are interested in the form, Marsh does good work. Search with a game name in with the username to find the channel.
      & Grimbo...Grim Beard is a unique presence. You'll either take to it right away or not, but there's a place in my heart just for that channel. Try the Deus Ex series, it'll give you a good idea of the channel frame story/style.

      This comment made me pause & holds even more weight after finding out whoever owns Game Informer deleted their 30-yr archive.
      A veteran game dev has been telling her stories & talking about her professional experiences on her own channel/name --- "Laura Fryer". She was on Gears of War & has a video called "Chainsaw Hoax" in which she breaks down a documentary/reality TV show about GoW in which the TV producers decided to simplify the narrative by lying about her; the show made Laura Fryer out to be a villain who wanted to delete the Chainsaw when that didn't happen, & she takes us thru how is happened in that video. She has a lot of insight & speaks to what OC says about the history of the industry/art of video games potentially being lost.

    Something bothers me about how the Avatar is constantly depressed in between games. It's probably meant to be a commentary on the mundanity of life in comparison to more fantastical settings, but considering that Ultima 4 was primarily about learning virtues and life lessons, it would have felt a lot more meaningful if that Avatar was able to take some of those lessons with him into the real world.

      As great as his stuff is, I will say; *_wait to watch the Lost Odyssey video until you play the game first._* It's such a masterpiece, you really want to go in fresh. Ditto with Skies of Arcadia to a lesser extent. Although LO is only for the 360, 360 emulation is quite easy these days and LO emulates quite well. Xenia/Xenia Canary are the recommended emulators. Lost Odyssey is, in many ways, the true Final Fantasy XIII, with Hironobu Sakaguchi writing and overseeing the game's development (along with bringing over many of his staff from squenix) and Nobuo Uematsu doing the music.

      @ponyote Majora's Mask is definitely tied with Ocarina of Time for me. I loveeee the darker tones it takes. I was able to play the original final fantasy when I was younger. I played alot of Bubble Bobble on the NES with my Grandma. As I got older, I got into Playstation; then when Xbox came out, I was a fan for life. Proudly part of the Halo generation. FPS, RPG and Action Adventure are my tops. I do love puzzle games as well. I wish I was able to experience more "walking simulator" games that were FMV heavy. That seems like a wild time to experience. Also original Fallouts and games of that nature. So interesting! Thank you for sharing your love and experience with me. It's dope to hear from a generation that was similar but vastly different than mine. I included creatures that shared the appearance of the Ultima 6 gargoyles in the Earthdawn role-playing game as the result of a failed experiment intended to create new life (a new species was successfully created, but some of the ingredients were questionable, leading to an appearance the other Name-Givers would abhor). More recently, I included gargoyles in a New World of Darkness campaign about fallen angels (a rewrite of the older Demon: The Fallen game). In that game, the gargoyles were heavily inspired by the movie I, Frankenstein, could either appear human or transform into winged stone giants, and were violently opposed to fallen angels (it was a long campaign, and the players took it in unexpected directions that ended up with the players both making peace with one faction of gargoyles as well as finding out their true origins, which also triggered a civil war within the gargoyle people).
