  • Tim lost his voice in an accident caused by a vicious set-up by unknown assailants, who had stretched a wire between two trees on a logging trail Tim was following on his moped. Barely surviving driving into the wire in high speed, the accident caused his larynx to be crushed beyond repair. Now, doctors are trying something that has rarely been done before: to operate another man's larynx into Tim's throat via organ transplant surgery.
    Amazing Medical Stories follows the unbelievable journeys of extraordinary human beings, who survived some of the most unimaginable conditions and illnesses.

    I used to work at dominos a few years back and a man with a stoma would call every Friday to order pizza, he requested me every time because I memorized his order so he wouldnt have to struggle and repeat himself over and over again. Put in the effort and care about human life, the little things can mean so much.

    I rode dirtbikes my whole life. One time while riding the trails we seen these 2 older men doing something around the trail by a tree. We came back later and it was a very sharp, thin wire. The person who did this doesn't likely have enough conscience to feel shame. Their act was not done lightly, it was deliberately designed to hit someone in the neck, at speed. You don't do something like this without knowing exactly what is likely to happen. Most likely he expected to kill someone.

      I do believe that wasn't done with the intention to kill, more likely with intention to trow somebody off their bike. If the trapper wanted to kill, he would have put fishing line, that would cut the throat. From what it sound like it was more likely bigger, sturdier thing, that was meant to strike the chest. The trapper mast likely by accident put the trap too high, or underestimated the hight of the bike. But still, pretty bad to make any kind of trap that can kill a human.

Instead of two grieving families it's hopefully just one.

      I feel like people throw the word hero around too much in todays world. Did the doctor do something really special for this man? Yes. Did the doctor risk his own life, selflessly to save this man? No. A hero is someone who puts their own life in danger, to save another. The doctor simply figured out how to do a voice transplant, and got paid a lot of money for it. Don't get it twisted. Someone who runs into a burning building to save someone is a hero. Someone who takes a bullet to save a kid is a hero. Someone who runs into enemy territory, and carries an injured person out of harms way to safety is a hero. Someone who does surgery to help a guy speak, and gets paid a lot of money to do it is not. Be happy for the guy getting his voice back, be appreciative the doctor did great work to help this man... but don't throw the word hero around like that... that's only deserving for true heroes.

    @Abdcwyxz Рік тому +67

    It's crazy how your voice doesn't really come from the larynx, but from the whole upper body. Even with the donor larynx, the patient had a totally different voice!
    Basically the larynx is like the hardware needed for generating a vibration and that the whole tone of the voice comes from the resonance in the chest. The bigger the cavity of the chest is, the lower the voice.
    Only the hardware was missing. The patient voice was there all along but had no hardware to generate the vibrations needed to ger the voice out.

      @НTTP true 😂 but technically everything is in the brain, but you are right but the way accents are formed, is with the shape of the tongue and lips as the sounds exits the mouth this is why you can “fake” accents and some accents are more difficult because you do not have control over the muscles used to make the sounds for that specific word

    • @dawsonadams5474
      @dawsonadams5474 3 роки тому +13

      The “setting” for an accent is the way that speakers typically hold the muscles in the tongue, face, throat and back of the mouth. The setting shapes the overall sound of the accent. You may have noticed that when an American speaks a foreign language, even if their pronunciation is pretty good, there’s usually still something American about how they sound. That characteristic sound comes primarily from the American accent setting. The American quality may sound funny when it’s mixed in with another language, but when you’re speaking American English, the American accent setting makes the pronunciation sound right.

    If he hadn’t nearly died from the wire, someone else might have actually died. This man is a hero and a survivor in so many ways. Not justifying the tragedy or the person who set up the trap in the first place. I wonder what the motivation was behind the evil person that set up the wire in the first place. Were they after some obnoxious biker(s) in particular? Did they assume that the person wouldn’t die from the wire but rather just get hurt? Were they copying something they seen or read about, out of curiosity? Or were they simply some deranged person that knew what would’ve happened, and was purposefully trying to kill someone? We may never know.

    The doctor, the donnor, the patient- all absolute legends. I needed to see this today.
    Edit: I just need to also mention that the level of skill needed for the doctor to do this is beyond insane, especially when you consider that this was very new territory when it was done.

    I only had heard of this story from my mom: When my grandma was a teenager in a canyon in San Diego, she witnessed her friend pass away from the same exact accident. He was basically beheaded as he rode his dirt bike in a canyon. I believe that, at the time, a person who lived near the canyon was tired of the noise and set up a horrible devastating trap. I’m so damn glad this man survived this.

I can't believe how normal his voice sounds now but then again I can because anything is possible in this universe.. So much unknown and undiscovered... I'm curios to know if he sounds like the guy whos voice box it originally was.
