  • The FlatFender is almost alive. This 1946 Jeep CJ2A is slowly coming together and on today's episode I button up the fuel system with a fresh new gas tank and get it ready to start up with a turn of the key. Every week we're a little closer to driving this Jeep.
    go here if you need a gas tank for your flatfender:

    Thanks Fred. First start up on a project is one of the most joyful moments.

    I put some heat wrap from Summit racing over the fuel line that runs from the pump to the carburetor on my 1952 Willy's to stop it from getting hot and vapor locking, worked like a charm!

    By far my second favorite show and a close second to the Dirt Head Shed! Thank you so much, both you and Dave, for continuing a better DIRT EVERY DAY.

    I’m glad you’re back on this project. I wish you did more videos like this. They are more enjoyable than installing aftermarket parts. Thanks

    My m38 has a Chevy v8 it was vapor locking I ran the fuel lines and same filter with return. I restricted the return even more to raise fuel pressure used a Holley carburetor jet # 60 pushed it into the rubber return line works great never had a problem with vapor lock since. And thanks for the videos.

    I had a 48 CJ-2A. Saw it in a horse pasture and asked the guy if he would sell it. I got it for $750.00. Got it home and after bypassing the fuel pump with a small electric and putting new plugs and a new battery the little go devil 4 cylinder fired right up. Never did anything else. That little jeep ran so good and fired up with only a small bump of the key. Miss that little Jeep. Really enjoy this project of yours Fred.

    Great fun little project Fred, I’m about to build another CJ6 from a pile of parts. Watching your videos helps keeping me motivated to keep trying to find parts in Australia which is a challenge! Keep them coming ❤

    The threads on flare nuts are the same as normal fine thread bolts. If you have a set of fine thread dies, you can just chase the threads on the flare nut if you’re worried about them being too crusty.

    I wish the replacement tanks for my M38A1 were cheap. I got a real awakening when I priced those out. Could have used a CJ tank but I wanted the 17 gallons. I still haven't tried starting mine yet. They are fun little projects though. Can't wait till I can start mine.

    Love these videos. Watch that filter. I use them on 23hp birggs motors and have issues with them bypassing too much fuel. The usa made one is good. The chinese made one has a bigger bypass hole and is not so good.

    Yay that sounds a sweet engine ... I'm hoping the return fuel line will get wrapped where it's fed through the chassis ( you know just next to the exhaust )

    There should be a fuel filter before the pump

    • @4xFredWilliams
      @4xFredWilliams  29 днів тому +2

      yeah I considered that, but also got feed back that these pumps don't like pulling fuel through filters.

      @@4xFredWilliams Fred, I used to have vapor lock ups on my 79 Ford Bronco with the 400m. So I added an electric pump at the tank to push the fuel to the mechanical fuel pump on the engine and on hot days it seems to have solved that problem.

    When you were tightening your inverted flare fitting, you did some thing that the old timers taught me, but you did not mention it. The old timer mechanics, I learned from always said to only snug or loosen the nut with a combination wrench and then when it’s time to torque on it always use a flare nut wrench. Don’t damage your flare nut wrench by using it the whole time.

    • @4xFredWilliams
      @4xFredWilliams  29 днів тому +3

      yes I did use it for the final tighten, the flare nut has seen better days, but so far no leaks

    Do you really want to run the fuel line so close to the exhaust. It can prematurely heat up the line, causing the fuel to vaporize in the line, causing vapor locking. There is also the fire hazard under your rear?

    when I was 10-13? I had a 41, it had lots and lots of issues, but once you got the starter to function, and fuel to it... thing was nearly unstoppable, even with a cracked head, used it to pull a skidder out of a swamp, and all sorts of misadventures.... like an idiot I sold it for $300 when I was 13... but that went to buy my first Guitar so? win?
